Digi Connect® WAN Application GuideUsing the Serial Console Port forOut-of-Band Console Management of Remote DevicesScenarioA Digi Connect WAN is used for primary or backup remote site WAN connectivity over a cellular wireless network. The Digi Connect WAN features a console port which may be used to interface to a serial port on a remote router, VPN appliance, firewall or other network equipment, providing secure out-of-band console management access. Administrators who require reliable communications to remote assets can rely on the Digi Connect WAN to provide an alternative to wired landline connections for a truly diverse TCP/IP network connection. Benefits include secure connection; network diversity; network backup to remote site; cost-effective communications (can be less expensive than POTS modem connection); and easy access from anywhere to remote devices. Theory of OperationIn a typical Digi Connect WAN application, a remote router plugs into an Ethernet port on the Digi Connect WAN via an Ethernet WAN port on the router. This provides a wireless WAN connection over a cellular IP network. For more information on this application, please refer to the Digi Connect WAN application guides for primary or fail-over WAN IP routing.A side benefit of the Digi Connect WAN is its ability to interface to remote serial devices via its RS-232 console port. The console port by default performs the same function as a router’s console port (i.e., to provide direct access to the device’s command line) for full administration, configuration, troubleshooting and control of the device. However, with a serial cable and a few clicks of the mouse, the console port on the Digi Connect WAN becomes a secure, persistent out-of-band connection to a router or other appliance’s console port using SSH or telnet.Console Message Logging: Logging of console messages generated from the attached network device’s console port is also supported. By default, 32kb of messages are stored in a FIFO queue and can be viewed using the “display buffer’s” CLI command or from the WebUI via the Management > Ports function.TCP Ports: The Digi Connect WAN, like most terminal servers, uses special TCP port numbers (in this case 2001 and 2501 for telnet and SSH respectively) to tell the Digi Connect WAN to pass telnet or SSH traffic through to a serial port.Direct command line access to the Digi Connect WAN itself is still available by using standard telnet or SSH TCP port numbers (ports 23 and 22 by default). In all cases, the TCP ports used for both pass-through and direct SSH/telnet access can be changed via the WebUI or CLI.Sample Application DiagramRemote Site HQTelnet orThe above diagram shows how multiple telnet or SSH clients can access the remote router/VPN appliance via the Digi Connect WAN using a wireless GSM or CDMA cellular network.Digi Connect WAN Configuration1.Read and follow the quick-start guide for the Digi Connect WAN and, optionally, theapplicable Digi Connect WAN application guides.2.Connect a serial console (a.k.a. null modem or crossover – not straight-thru) cablefrom the DB-9M console port on the Digi Connect WAN to the network device’s console port.3.Configure the serial Port 1 on the Digi Connect WAN for Console Management:a.Open a browser and point to the IP address of the Digi Connect WAN.b.In the WebUI select Configuration > Serial Port > Port 1c.Select “Change Profile”, choose “Console Management”, press “Apply”. Ascreen similar to the one below will appear:4.Serial port parameters: The default settings are 9600, 8, 1, N, no flow control. Tochange or verify these settings select “Basic Settings” in the serial port configuration.5.The TCP ports used by telnet and SSH can be changed: The default TCP ports areService Default TCP PortTelnet 2001SSH 2501These can be changed or disabled as shown above.6.Port logging stores console messages for later viewing via the Management > SerialPorts screen. This feature can be disabled. The buffer size can be changed.7.IP filtering and TCP/UDP port service settings provide firewall-like capabilities to theDigi Connect WAN. Improper settings may block telnet or SSH traffic.Sample Session: Refer to the diagram above using this IP address:Digi Connect WAN wireless link 10.25.13.5Access Network Device’s Console Port Through the Digi Connect WAN: Telnet to10.25.13.5 port 2001 – this will connect directly to the network device’s console port (e.g., from Windows command line enter “telnet 10.25.13.5 2001”).SSH to 10.25.13.5 port 2501 – SSH requires login to the Digi Connect WAN first using a user name (root is the default and must be entered even if login isdisabled) and optional password and then connect to the device’s console port. More ports and advanced features, such as power management, are available via the Digi CM™ and Digi PortServer® TS products. Port forwarding entries on the Digi Connect WAN are used to pass the incoming telnet/SSH traffic thorough the Digi Connect WAN to the terminal server. For example, a PortServer TS 4 connected to the Ethernet port of the Digi Connect WAN is assigned IP address 192.168.1.3. To access serial Port 3 of the PortServer TS 4, create a TCP port forwarding entry on the Digi Connect WAN to forward TCP Port 2003 (the default TCP port for Port 3) to IP address 192.168.1.3.Where to Get More InformationRefer to the Digi Connect WAN user documentation and Digi technical support website at /support for more information. Technical assistance is available at /support/eservice/eservicelogin.jsp.For sales information, please contact Digi International at 952-912-3444.。

It provides simple methods for accomplishing common setup tasks. For information on alternative methods, see the online documentation. Step A: Set Up the Hardware1.Connect the PortServer TS 16 to a proper power source andthe PortServer TS 16 to the network. See the Specifications table on the backside of this document for details.2.Connect peripherals to serial ports. See the Terminal ServerCable Guide for information on cabling peripherals to serial ports. Step B: Install and Set Up DPA-RemoteThis step is not required if you do not intend to use DPA-Remote to configure the IP address or to monitor ports.Notes: (1) DPA-Remote cannot be used to change the IP address of a PortServer TS 16 that has already been assigned one; it can only be used to configure the initial IP address. (2) DPA remote cannot assign an IP address on a network that has an active DHCP server. For information on installing DPA-Remote, see the online Digi Port Authority - Remote Device Monitor Setup Guide . Step C: Configure an IP AddressThe following are 4 methods for configuring an IP address. Use the one that is most convenient for you.Method 1: Using DP A-Remote 1.Run DPA-Remote.2.If DPA-Remote is not set for ADDP, choose ADDP as theDiscovery Protocol.3.Choose Discover. A list of Digi devices with IP addresses of0.0.0.0 appears.4.Select a PortServer TS 16 from the list and then choose Con-figure.5.Supply an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway andthen choose OK.DPA-Remote configures the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.Method 2: Using Ping-ARPUse this section to configure an IP address by manually updating a server’s ARP table and then pinging the PortServer TS 16.1.Record the MAC address of the PortServer TS 16. It islocated on the back of the unit.2.Access a server on the same subnet as the PortServer TS 16.3.Manually update the server’s ARP table using the PortServerTS 16’s MAC address and the IP address you want assigned to the PortServer TS 16. The following is an example of how this is done on a Windows NT 4.0 system:arp -s 143.191.2.1 00-40-9d-22-23-604.Ping the PortServer TS 16 using the IP address just assigned. The following is an example:ping 143.191.2.1The ping will probably time out before there is a response. 5.Wait a few seconds and then ping again. The PortServer TS 16 replies to the ping, indicating that the IP address has been configured.Method 3: Using DHCP or RARP1.Record the MAC address of the PortServer TS 16, which islocated on the back of the unit.2.Set up an entry on a DHCP or RARP server. If you intend touse RealPort, do the following:•Reserve a permanent IP address.•Record the IP address. You will need it when you config-ure the RealPort driver.3.Power on the PortServer TS 16.Method 4: Using the Command Line1.Connect a terminal or PC to a serial port on the PortServer TS16.•For a terminal, use the cable that came in your package. •For a Windows Hyperterminal connection, use the cablethat came in the package, a straight-through DB25-to-DB9 modem cable, and gender changers as required.2.Configure the parameters of the terminal or terminal emula-tion software to work with the serial port. The default port settings are below:3.Log in to the PortServer TS 16 as root by entering the follow-ing commands: (You may have to press the Enter key to get a Login prompt.)•At the login prompt, type root .•At the password prompt, type dbps (which is the defaultpassword. If the password has been changed, use the new password.)See the newpass command in the online Digi One/PortServer TS Command Reference for information on changing the root password.4.Configure an IP address with the following command:set config dhcp=off ip=ip-addr submask=maskwhere ip-addr is the IP address to configure and mask is the subnet mask used by the network Exampleset config dhcp=off ip=192.10.7.3 submask=255.255.255.05.Reboot at the reboot prompt.Step D: Configuring Ports Using the Web Interface1.Access the PortServer TS 16 from a web browser by specify-ing the unit’s IP address in the URL window.2.Log in to the PortServer TS 16 as root by entering the follow-ing:•At the login prompt, type root .•At the password prompt, type dbps (which is the defaultpassword. If the password has been changed, use the new password.)e the web interface to configure ports. PortServer TS 8 or 16 to ConnectPort TS 8 or 16The PortServer TS 8/16 are products Digi International has been manufacturing for over 15 years. The ConnectPort TS 8/16 are newer products which are similar in core functionality, but which offer enhanced performance, better security, better manageability, customization options, and additional features important in the modern device connectivity environment. The ConnectPort TS uses the same driver and offers the same pinout as existing PortServer TS products; therefore most existing applications are drop-in replacement.Additional hardware features:∙Dedicated console port∙LEDs on each port to indicate data activity.∙USB flash drive support -- ability to use USB flash drives for programming and storage.Additional firmware capabilities:Security:∙Web proxy support to allow use on networks where this is required.∙Configure non-default user names that have various levels of device control o no longer required to use the name “root”o can have users with some, but not all configuration, capability fortroubleshootingFlexibility:∙Device initiated RealPort support – the ConnectPort TS can be configured to connect to the Computer hosting the RealPort driver.∙Product customization capabilitieso Integrators can pre-load different defaults when the unit is sent to a location or hardware reset to defaults.o The look and feel of the device can be managed to show a custom logo image or web style sheet in the webserver. This capability allows the ConnectPortTS to more closely align with the look and feel of other software componentsin an integrated solution.∙Python programmability -- to monitor data flow at the individual device level and take autonomous action, and/or to log data to a local (flash/usb) file.Manageability:∙Digi Remote Manager support∙Mass-configuration deployment tools are available to pre-load customization or tosimply preconfigure the device prior to deployment.Configuring the ConnectPort TS for the most typical applicationsThis technical note is intended for solution implementers and describes how to implement typical configurations analogous to PortServer TS configurations via web and via cli.Via the Web: Most initial testing of the product is done via the web page. The Web page of the ConnectPort TS is very similar to the PortServer TS configuration web page.Serial port profile options are provided under the serial ports supporting the different connection profile types: (RealPort, Console Management, TCP Sockets, UDP Sockets, Serial Bridge, Local Configuration, Industrial Automation, Modem Emulation, and Custom). These generally behave similarly with default options that are generally compatible with the default options offered by the PortServer TS 8 and 16.Login: root/dbpsFor RealPort:Configuration→Serial Ports→Port#→Profile: Realport→ApplyConfiguration→Serial Ports→Port#-->Copy—Select all ports→Apply For TCP Sockets:Configuration→Serial Ports→Port#→Profile: TCP SocketsScroll Down to Basic Serial settingsBaud rate: 38400 {other flow control settings as needed} →Apply Configuration→Serial Ports→Port#-->Copy—Select all ports→Apply The network configuration supports DHCP or static IP for IPv4.Via the Dedicated Console Port: The configuration of the product is similar to PortServer in many respects. The dedicated console port is configured for 9600 8, N, 1 and uses the same pinout as the numbered ports. These commands can also be given via ssh or telnet.Slight differences in syntax:For those customers used to configuring using the “#>set profile options, this is now#>set profile profile=[value] port=## instead of#>set profile profile=[value] range=##Note: the values for serial ports are now all managed under #>set serial port=## instead of set port set line & set flow.Login: root/dbpsFor RealPort:#>set profile profile=RealPort port=*For TCP sockets:#>set profile profile=tcp_sockets port=*#>set serial port=* baud=38400 (the default is 9600)#> set serial port=* flowcontrol=none {or other settings as required}#>set serial ?Shows the syntax for the flow control and other serial port settings To set the network address manually via the CLI#> set network ip=[ipaddr] submask=[subnet mask] gateway=[gateway ip] static=on dhcp=offAdditional information:ConnectPort TS product Support Page:/support/productdetail?pid=3019RealPort Drivers and information (same driver as PortServer TS products)/support/productdetail?pid=3037Quickstart Guide/support/documentation/90000848-88_D.pdfComplete syntax for CLI is described in the Command Reference Manual:/support/documentation/90000566_N.pdfUser Manual/support/documentation/90000565_P1.pdfCabling Guide (same cables as PortServer TS products):/support/documentation/90000253_G.pdfDevice Customization/Customized Default information:/support/documentation/90000734_B.pdfDigi Remote Manager/Device Cloud/support/documentation/html/90001150/Current/Default.htm。
1.Configure the PortServer TS serial ports in Realport, connected behind a Digi ConnectWan 3G with port forwarding acting as an internet gateway. Objective: Step by step instructions to configure the PortServer and the Digi Connect Wan 3G to allow access via Realport to several serial devices from the Internet.1.1Software Requirements-Digi Device Discovery Utility-PuTTy or any Terminal application1.2Hardware Requirements-Digi Connect WAN 3G with a Internet enabled APN allowing incoming connections-Digi PortServer TS-Serial device(s) or a laptop computer / loopback adapter for testing purposes.2.Theory of OperationCommunications applications such as SCADA polling, remote printing, or other hots-initiated tarffic can be sent over the cellular network to the remote device or devices via the Digi Connect WAN 3G. The Digi Connect WAN 3G forwards IP traffic, in this case Digi’s patented Realport protocol destine d for a specific port or port range on the cellular interface, to a private IP address on the ethernet “side” of Digi Connect WAN 3G.This process uses Network Address Translation (NAT) where only the mobile IP address is visible to the outside and TCP/UDP port forwarding entries direct traffic from the mobile IP address of the Digi Connect WAN 3G to the appropirate device. For example, an application on the host computer communicates via COM ports. The Realport COM port redirector driver is configured to use the mobile IP address of the rmote Digi Connect WAN 3G. A port forwarding entry on the Digi Connect WAN 3G direct the realport traffic, which uses TCP Port 771, to the Digi serial server.3.Diagram and Setup InstructionsRealport Installed and configuredto map COM portsTo Connect WAN 3G mobile IP Addr.Mobile IP addr :80.187.15.5Eth IP addr :192.168.1.1Port Forwardingentries forRealport TCPport 771Multipleserialdevices1)PortServer TS Configuration :a)Connect the PortServer TS on the same network as the computer to be able to access the webinterface, using the Digi Device Discovery locate the device on the network and double click it’s IP Addressb)On the web interface, navigate to Configuration>Serial Ports, and change the profile of eachports to “Realport” then click Apply.c)Next, navigate to Configuration>Network and select “Use the Following IP address” andenter a fixed ip address, in this example :a.IP Address : 192.168.1.20b.Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0c.Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (This is the IP address of the Digi Connect WAN3G)d)Click Apply.
Digi PortServer TS 16 MEI
例如: set flow range=3 ixon=off ixoff=off rts=on cts=on3.
建立拨入PPP用户,使用以下命令:set user name=name protocol=ppp netservice=on defaultaccess=netserviceName是使用PPP的用户名例如:set user name=pppin protocol=ppp netservice=on defaultaccess=netservice命令行配置步骤5.
例如:set user name=pppin ipaddr=ippool6.
•端口波特率是115000 bps.•用户设置为使用IP地址pool命令如下:#〉set ports range=3 device=min#〉set flow range=3 ixon=off ixoff=off rts=on cts=on#〉set line range=3 baud=115000#〉set user name=pppin protocol=ppp netservice=ondefaultaccess=netservice#〉set user name=pppin ipaddr=ippool#〉set user name=pppin localipadr=199.1.1.2浏览器进入终端服务器配置界面浏览器配置步骤终端服务器有PPP引导程序共配置时使用浏览器配置步骤根据现场情况,逐步进行,直到完成配置。
