What are the basic elements(元素)of good manners? Certainly a strong sense of justice is one; courtesy(礼貌)is often 36 more than a highly developed sense of fair play. A friend of mine once told me of 37 along a one-lane(单行道), unpaved mountain road. 38 was another car that produced clouds of choking(熏人的) 39 , and it was a long way to the nearest 40 highway. Suddenly, at a 41 place, the car ahead pulled off the road. 42 that its owner might have engine trouble, my friend stopped and asked if anything was wrong. “ 43 ,” said the other driver. “But you’ve st oo d my dust this far; I’ll 44 with yours the rest of the way.”
Another element of courtesy is empathy(善解人意), a 45 that makes it possible for a person to see into the mind or heart of someone else, to understand the pain or 46 there and to do something to reduce it. A man 47 alone in a restaurant was trying to unscrew(旋松)the cap of a beer bottle, 48 he couldn’t do it because of badly injured 49 . He asked a young waiter to help him. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back 50 and loosened the cap without difficulty. Then he 51 it again. Turning back to the man, he 52 to make great efforts to open the bottle without success. 53 he took it into the kitchen and returned shortly, saying that he had managed to loosen it —but only with a pair of pliers(钳子).
Yet another element of politeness is the ability to treat all people 54 , in spite of all status(地位)or importance. 55 when you have doubts about some people, act as if they are worth your best manners. You may also be astonished to find out that they really are.
Courtesy is the key to a happier world.

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
56. Why did the author feel bitter about her father as a young adult?

Forget Twitter and Facebook, Google and the Kindle. Television is still the most influential medium around. Indeed ,for many of the poorest regions of the world, it remains the next big thing——finally becomes globally available. And that is a good thing, because the TV revolution is changing lives for the better.
Across the developing world, around 45% of families had a TV in 1995; by 2005 the number had climbed above 60%. That is some way behind the U.S., where there are more TVs than people, and where people now easily get access to the Internet. Five million more families in sub-Saharan Africa will get a TV over the next five years. In 2005 , after the fall of the Taliban(塔利班),which had outlawed TV, 1 in 5 Afghans had one. The global total is another 150 million by 2013——pushing the numbers to well beyond two thirds of families.
Television’s most powerful effect will be on the lives of women. In India, researchers Robert Jensen and Emily Oster found that when TVs reached villages, women were more likely to go to the market without their husbands’approval and less likely to want a boy rather than a girl. They were more likely to make decisions over child health care. TV is also a powerful medium for adult education. In the Indian state of Gujarat, Chitrageet is a popular show that plays Bollywood songs with words in Gujarati on the screen. Within six months, viewers had made a small but meaningful improvement in their reading skills.
Too much TV has been associated with violence, overweight and loneliness. However, TV is having a positive influence on the lives of billions worldwide.

A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change
the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are "green," that
is, friendly to the environment.
Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets,
but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing (生产) of clean and
safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.
The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how
they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of "Buy it, use
it, throw it away, and forget it. "The public pressure is on, and gradually business
is cleaning up its act.
64. It becomes clear from the text that the driving force behind green products is ______
A. public caring for the environment.
B. companies desire for bigger sales.
C. new ways of doing business.
D. rapid growth of supermarkets.
65. What would be the best title for the text?

66. The underlined word "it" in the fourth paragraph refers to _____
A. a selling point.
B. the company name.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends.
Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such
as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when
he was a teenager.
“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is rea lly great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”
Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move
in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in
many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken
place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent—child
activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship
that can continue into adulthood. No wonder greeting cards today carry the message,
“To my mother, my best friend.”
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect
for parents. “There's still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a
lot of confus ion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to
more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone
to have a say.
“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents,
the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult
to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”
67. The underlined word “gulf” in Para.3 most probably means _________.
A. interest.
B. distance.
C. difference.
D. separation.
68. Which of the following shows that the generation gap is disappearing?
A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.
B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities.
C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.
D. Parents share more interests with their children.
69. By saying “today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side.”
the author means that today’s parents _________.
A. follow the trend of the change.
B. can set a limit to the change.
C. fail to take the change seriously.
D. have little difficulty adjusting to the change.
70. The purpose of the passage is to _________.
A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with.
B. discuss the development of the parent-child relationship.
C. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship.
D. compare today’s parent-child relationship with that in the past.

Holidaymakers who are bored with baking beaches and overheated hotel rooms head
for a big igloo. Swedish businessman Nile Bergqvist is delighted with his new hotel,
the world’s first igloo hotel. Built in a small town in Lapland, it has been attracting lots of visitors, but soon the fun will be over.
In two weeks’ time Bergqvist’s ice creation (作品)will be nothing more than
a pool of water. “We don’t see it as a big problem,” he says. “We just look forward
to replacing it.”
Bergqvist built his first igloo in 1991 for an art exhibition. It was so
successful that he designed the present one, which measures roughly 200 square meters. Six workmen spent more than eight weeks piling 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base; when the snow froze, the base was removed. “The only wooden thing we have left in the igloo is the front door,” he says.
After their stay, all visitors receive a survival certificate recording their success. With no windows, nowhere to hang clothes and temperatures below 0°C, it may seem more like a survival test than a relaxing hotel break. “It’s great fun,” Bergqvist explains, “as well as a good start in survival training.”
The popularity of the igloo is beyond doubt: it is now attracting tourists from all over the world. At least 800 people have stayed at the igloo this season even though there are only 10 rooms. “You can get a lot of people in,” explains Bergqvist. “The beds are three meters wide by two meters long, and can fit at least four at one time.”
71. Bergqvist designed and built the world’s first igloo hotel because_________.
A. he believed people would enjoy trying something new.
B. he wanted to make a name for the small town.
C. an art exhibition was about to open.
D. more hotel rooms were needed.
72. When the writer says “the fun will be over,” he refers to the fact that_________.
A. hotel guests will be frightened at thought of the hard test.
B. Bergqvist’s hotel will soon become a pool of water.
C. holidaymakers will soon get tired of the big igloo.
D. a bigger igloo will replace the present one.
73. According to the text, the first thing to do in building an igloo is_________.
A. to gather a pool of water.
B. to prepare a wooden base.
C. to cover the ground with ice.
D. to pile a large amount of snow.
74. When guests leave the igloo hotel they will receive a paper stating that_________.
A. they have visited Lapland.
B. they have had an ice-snow holiday.
C. they have had great fun sleeping on ice.
D. they have had a taste of adventure.
75. Which of the four pictures below is the closest to the igloo hotel as described in the text?
