A large dinner party is being given in an up-country station by a colonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and an American naturalist. At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an army officer. The girl insists women have long outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men."A woman's reaction in any crisis," the officer says, "is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has."The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of the other guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of the hostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers to him. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor the servant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors. The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait for a snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the room but he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place—under the table. His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movement will frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arresting that it quietens everyone. "I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred—that's five minutes —and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!"The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying "…two hundred and eighty..." when, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the snake emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Four or five screams ring out as he jumps to slam shut the balcony doors."There is your proof!" the host says. "A man has just shown us real control.""Just a minute," the American says, turning to his hostess, "How did you know that cobra was in the room?"A faint smile comes across the woman's face as she replies. "Because it was lying across my foot."(1)What is the argument between the army officer and the young girl about?A.Whether women are afraid of mice.B.Whether men are calmer than women.C.Whether men are cleverer than women.D.Whether women would make suitable soldiers.(2)Why is the servant asked to put out some milk?A.To play a trick.B.To serve the guests.C.To attract the snake.D.To feed the hostess's pet.(3)Why does the scientist suggest the guests play a game?A.He doesn't want anyone to panic.B.He intends to test the officer's theory.C.He sees there was a snake in the room.D.He wants to entertain the other guests.(4)What does the author imply through the hostess's final statement?A.The army officer's opinion is wrong.B.The hostess understood the American's intention.C.The American was surprised by the snake's presence.D.The hostess has had previous experience dealing with snakes.6.Have you ever heard of a pawpaw(木瓜)? If not, do not feel bad. Most Americans do not know of the fruit, though it is native to the United States.Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods. A pawpaw is a tropical-like fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It's also the largest fruit native to the US.It is similar to a typical mango in size. It has a dull green-colored skin, and a soft, almost-creamy orange inside. The pawpaw was not sold commercially in the past. The fruit requires a very special environment-low, wet areas that sometimes flood. It has a very short harvest season, from two to three weeks in September and October. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw tree it came from.Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers haveorganized "pawpaw festivals" to reintroduce people to the food. At such a festival in Maryland recently, farmers displayed different products made with pawpaws. There were pawpaw jams, pies, gelato(冰淇淋)and beer. Michael Judd helped organize the Maryland pawpaw festival.Farmers are trying to grow kinds of pawpaws that will be easier to ship and sell commercially. Donna and Jim Davis are pawpaw farmers in Westminster, Maryland. They said that they purchased their pawpaw trees in the 1990s and now sell the fruit at farmer's markets and online.(1)What can we know about the pawpaw according to the text?A.Its harvest season lasts long.B.It grows in Europe originally.C.It has already returned to its former position.D.It used to be well-received in North America.(2)What limited the pawpaw to being sold commercially in the past?A.It was unknown to the world.B.It's hard to grow, store and transport.C.It has similar taste with typical mangoes.D.The planters were unwilling to grow them for low profits.(3)Why do farmers hold "pawpaw festivals"?A.To show lots of delicious food to people.B.To make the pawpaw known to people again.C.To introduce people to a completely new fruit.D.To tell people the forgotten history about the fruit.(5)What is the best title for the text?A.The History of Pawpaws.B.How to Grow Pawpaws.C.The Comeback of Pawpaws.D.The Origin of Pawpaw Festival.四、七选五(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)7. Jahira said, "Sabrina said that in her dream she went to the Olympics. She described everything at this international competition. Jahira said, "Tears came to her eyes, and she said, ‘I understand.’"A week or two later, a rich family came to visit Sabrina's gym unexpectedly. They watched Sabrina train. A helping hand.BThe latest Chinese "god song" (an Internet term to describe pop songs that spread virally(病毒性地) through the Internet) is still stirring up fierce debates between those who view it as a milestone for Chinese pop music going global and those who regard it as a bad image of China.Last week, Little Apple, written and performed by the Chopsticks Brothers, won the AMA International Song Award and the duo performed the song at the 2014 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. Another Chinese pop singer, Zhang Jie, won the International Artist Award. But while fans of these singers are thinking highly of the awards and the performance by theChopsticks Brothers at the AMA celebration, there are others who are less excited. They have questioned the value of the awards and what effects it will have on Chinese culture's "going abroad", claiming it may leave foreign audiences with a poor impression of Chinese pop music, and even Chinese culture. The Little Apple phenomenon, both home and abroad, can be more easily understood and judged if we look at it from a business perspective rather than a cultural perspective. The professional promoters behind the duo have developed a clear strategy to promote the duo and their works, not just this particular song. Little Apple was originally released to promote the duo's film Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon. From the very beginning a viral marketing strategy was used to promote the song, which immediately went viral on the Internet due to its repetitive rhythm, easy-to-remember lyrics, simple and funny dance and, most importantly, grass roots nature. The video accumulated more than 1 billion hits on China's major video websites.Although the song was generally dismissed by music professionals who criticized it as "musical junk food", Little Apple's popularity nationally paved the way for promoting the duo internationally.25. The writer’s attitude to the song of Little Apple is ______.A. opposedB. negativeC. objectiveD. critical26. What does the underlined words “the duo” refer to?A. Little Apple.B. Chopsticks brothers.C. Zhang Jie.D. American singers.27. We can learn from the passage that ______.A. Little Apple's popularity is also a success of marketing strategyB. Little Apple is generally thought worthless by the AMAC. Little Apple is really popular with all people in ChinaD. Little Apple was originally released as a pop song on the InternetCSunstroke is a condition that can quickly go from dangerous to deadly, especially if propercare isn’t given immediately.Sunstroke, sometimes called heatstroke, is a result of the body temperature rising above the safe limits. This causes the body's necessary functions to stop working. It's usually pretty easy to avoid sunstroke, as long as proper action is taken. In that case, you need to act as quickly as possible to return that person's body to a safe temperature. Here are a few tips to help treat sunstroke.Call for helpCall to get an ambulance as quickly as possible. This should be the first thing you do, especially if the sunstroke person has fainted(昏迷). Also, call for help from anyone nearby if you' re in a public place. If there's no one around, call someone nearby if they can get there sooner than an ambulance. Ask everyone to bring you as much water as possible, if there isn't much nearby.Get the person to a cooler areaIf there's a building nearby, aim for that. Anywhere with plenty of air conditioners and water is perfect. If a building isn't available, bring the person to a well-shaded area.Get the water flowingIf the person is still conscious, get him or her to drink water. If there's a bathtub available, fill it with cool water and put the person in it.If your water supply is limited, you have to save it. Dampen a towel or shirt and put it on the person's body. Focus on the face, neck, and chest.Fan the personGetting moving air over the person cools him or her down. Use anything, a towel or sheet, a shirt, your hands, or a piece of board. This is where having many people around really helps, as they can combine to fan the entire body.28. When does a person get sunstroke?A. When the body doesn't function.B. When proper care is given immediately.C. When someone is exposed to the sun too long.D. When the body temperature goes up beyond what one can bear.29. What is mainly discussed in the passage?A. The first aid for sunstroke.B. The cause of sunstroke.C. The chief symptoms of sunstroke.D. The essential prevention of sunstroke.30. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?A. Call for assistance from others.B. Leave the sunstroke person in the shade.C. Put a wet towel on the person's face.D. Help the person take some medicine.31. The text probably comes from____________.A. a guide bookB. a book reviewC. a medical magazineD. an official documentDI used to joke that I spoke French like a 3-year-old. Until I met a French 3-year-old and couldn’t keep the conversation. This was after a year of intense study, including at least two hours a day with Rosetta Stone, Fluenz and other self-instruction software, joining study groups and watching French movies. However, my failure at French was the best thing I could have done for my 57-year-old brain. In the last few years, unable to hold a list of just four grocery items in my head, I began to worry about my state of mind. So to comfort myself that nothing was wrong, just before learning French I took a test. I scored below average for my age group in all of the subjects.Because learning a foreign language is a difficult task for adults, I worked my brains hard to learn it. Surprisingly, my failure at French study produced an unexpected benefits. After a year of struggling with the language, I retook the test, and the results shocked me. My scores had improved, placing me above average in seven of 10 subjects, and average in the other three. My verbal memory score jumped from the bottom half to the 88. Studying a language had been like drinking from a mental fountain of youth. What might explain such an improvement?A researcher said that language study was beneficial to older adults, noting that the cognitive(认知) tasks involved —including working memory, and task switching —are closely related to the areas of the brain that are most connected with declines due to aging. In other words, the things that make second language study so mad for grown-ups are the very things that may make the effort so beneficial. So I plan to spend the next year learning Italian.32. According to the text, Rosetta Stone is ____________.A. a person who helps the author learn FrenchB. a French study groupC. a kind of self-instruction softwareD. a French study programme33. How do you understand the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?A. Giving up language study is totally wrong.B. Studying a language satisfies your needs.C. Studying a language gives you much pleasure.D. Studying a language makes your brain young.34. What might explain the author’s memory improvement?A. Learning French trained part of his brain.B. Cognitive tasks are interesting.C. A strong will is the key to his success.D. Taking two tests made him clever.35. Why did the author want to learn Italian?A. To challenge himself.B. To get more benefits.C. To know Italian culture.D. To travel to Italy.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Jack asked. "But that would be foolish!""Oh, no, it wouldn't," answered Bob. "Who cut that man's hair? Just think it. He couldn't cut it himself, could he? Another of the barbers cut it. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar( 奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.Now the very same thing is true to literature. And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail -- that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.【1】A friend of the writer's drew the horses ____.A.very wellB.in the way of western ruleC.in the way of his own ruleD.all of the above【2】The writer was surprised because ____.A.the artist began to draw at the head of the horseB.the artist began to draw at the tail of the horseC.the artist made his own ruleD.the artist did not follow other people's rule【3】You are not yet experienced because ____.A.you don't know where to beginB.you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tailC.you always asked questionD.you do not trust to your own powers【4】when you become more experienced you will ____.A.never ask questionB.often begin at the tailC.should write the end of the storyD.should think of the beginning【5】The topic of the passage isA.How to draw a horseB.How to write a storyC.How to make your own rulesD.Trust to your own powers3.You speak, write a letter, and make a telephone call. Your words carry a message. People communicate with words. Do you think you can communicate without words?A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "No". You nod and people know you are saying "Yes". Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on doors tell you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time? People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV and radios and films all help us to communicate with each other. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.【1】Can we communicate with each other without words?A.Yes, some times we can.B.No, we can't.C.No. It's impossible.D.Yes, we always do so.【2】When we see somebody smile, then, he must be feeling ____.A.angryB.joyfulC.surprisedD.sad【3】We can learn news from ____.A.newspapersB.radioC.TVD.ABC【4】A sign at the bus stop tells you ____.A.how many buses there areB.what kind of bus it isC.where the bus comes and goesD.how much money you'll pay for the ticket【5】What do you think is the quickest way to communicate with your friend in another city?A.Writing a letter.B.Making a telephone.C.Drawing a picture.D.Asking someone else to take a message.4.Friendship continues to remain central to our lives. Friends often affect our health and energy. More and more people are increasingly turning towards their friends for support and sharing rather than just communicating with their relatives. We may have a very unclear understanding of what makes a friend but we all want to have a good number of friends around us. There are certain things you do to help you make friends or at least help you get close to people whom you want to make friends with. The first step to make friends with people is to make them like you. If they don’t like you in the first place, it is unlikely that they’ll be eager to become your friends. To let someone know that you are interested in him, simple gestures like a little smile and calling him by his name can help. To make the other person feel important, you need to be a good listener and to encourage him to talk. Give your honest and sincere opinion, but do not make fun of him.The second step is to develop trust in each other. You need to share opinions with this person and it is necessary for you to develop a habit of seeing things from his point of view. To become the best of friends, you must show concern and consideration for your friends’ desires and opinions. The third and final step is to show your support and encouragement towards your friend. Moreover, you also need to be very clear about your expectations from your friend. Authorities in China have tried to keep the animals away from populated areas with piles of fruit and vegetables and physical barriers. The herd was spotted last week on the outskirts (郊区) of Kunming.“One potential explanation for the elephant migration is overcrowding in the nature reserve these animals once called home,” says George, an elephant specialist at Colorado State University. Asian elephants are endangered, only around 300 surviving in China, but the population living in the reserves of the Xishuangbanna region has been growing in recent years. George says this wayward (任性的) group might have set out to find a new home with less competition for resources.“We’ve seen elephants expanding their range for decades now, as their populations increase, and they search for more food for the growing herd,” says Becky Chen, a conservation scientist at the Zoological Society of London who has studied elephant-human interactions. Other experts wonder if this is an example of a herd being misled by an inexperienced leader, or if the decision to roam was an almost random choice.Authorities have instructed residents along the route to stay inside if the elephants are nearby and avoid disturbing the herd. If the animals can’t be turned backto their former forested home, scientists and land managers may need to make provisions (准备) for the elephants to live permanently in Kunming.Chen says she hopes the situation will raise awareness of human-elephant conflict and elephant conservation. “What we have to learn is not how to solve the problem, but how to increase tolerance,” she says. “How can we use this event to let everybody pay attention to coexistence between people and animals?”8. Which is the possible reason for elephant migration?A. The population of people.B. Inhabitant loss.C. Annual migration.D. An act of a misleading head.9. What does the underlined word “roam” in paragraph 4 mean?A. Settle.B. Wander.C. Leave.D. Accompany.10. What may Chen agree with?A. It takes long to live in harmony with animals.B. It is important to reflect on how to live with animals.C. The increasing elephants threaten human’s settlement.D. The endangered elephants migrate due to human development.11. Which section does the story most likely come from in a newspaper?A. Nature.B. Health.C. Entertainment.D. Life.DIf electric bikes haven’t caught your attention yet, here’s one that might. Okapi, a Boston-based start-up, is producing a unique e-bike that bridges the gap between motorcycles and ordinary bikes. These aren’t normal bikes. If the futuristic appearance doesn’t give them away, the specs (规格) will: Okapi’s bikes have an all-electric range of up to 40 miles and a top speed of around 30 mph. Those aren’t crazy numbers, but they are more than adequate for an ordinary bike. The company’s selling its bikes for just under $3,000. That’s in line with other e-bikes’ pricing, but Okapi’s bikes look more appealing thanthe others, which try (with varying degrees of success) to look like normal bicycles. The bikes’ full suspension, hidden storage, and 1,000-watt motor all add up to a fun ride. Okapi’s design appears to be stronger and more able to handle the bumps (碰撞) than many other electric bikes, some of which appear to be modeled after old models. The main downside to Okapi’s design is that it supports a maximum of 280 pounds, which may stop some riders enjoying the bike.Okapi’s approach to the e-bike is a little different from others’. While more than one company tries to hide their electric powertrain (动力系统) underneath slim bodywork, Okapi puts it all out for the world to see in a big, square battery pack. There’s almost a futuristic dirt bike look to the bike, which is less awkward than it sounds.Electric bikes are getting cheaper, almost every day, but Okapi’s product charges a high price: The Starter Edition bike costs $2,989.98. The good news is that Okapi’s bike looks better and stronger than many offerings on the market today.Though they’re not the most mainstream product out there, e-bikes are worth the coin at almost any price. If you’re considering buying an electric bike, do it. E-bikes absolutely offer you an enjoyable and exciting experience, even on the cheaper end.12. What do we know about Okapi’s new bike?A. Its look is normal.B. Its speed is steady.C. It has a lower price.D. It has a limited load.13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?A. The battery pack.B. Slim bodywork.C. The electric powertrain.D. Okapi’s approach.14. What is the author’s attitude toward e-bikes?A. Objective.B. Unclear.C. Conservative.D. Supportive.15. I grew up in Westley, California. After graduating with high school, I went to Beijing and started teaching in a kindergarten. I had never been to a city big as Beijing before.I fall in love with Chinese food. I would eat out at the different restaurant every nightand practice my Chinese with local citizen. I suppose the air was clean back home, but my life in China was much more interesting. My most favorite part about living in Beijing was something that much other foreigners didn’t like at all—the noise. I loved walking outside my door and hear the sounds of city life. Therefore, I’m back in Westley now, and all I hear is silence. I definitely miss Beijing.第二节书面表达(25分)2015年10月,某中学校刊举办了一次“How do you use the Internet?”的问卷调查,全校2000多名学生参加了该调查,请你根据图表提示,用英文写一篇短文刊登在校报上,简要分析调查结果,发表自己的观点,并提出相应的建议。
