Along with more than 300 other seniors, I marched into the stadium on the afternoon of May 10. The audience burst into deafening cheers. The huge stadium shook with all the whistling and clapping. It was as if a Hollywood superstar had walked on stage. And indeed, every single senior that day was a star of the moment. Each deserved it. The seniors had been preparing for four years for this once-in-a-lifetime moment—the commencement (graduation ceremony).Seated, I waited anxiously for the opening address. As a foreign exchange student, I was not able to receive a diploma. However, I still had the wonderful feeling of being part of things. Like the other graduates, I was dressed in marron cap and gown. Our principal, Mr. Glover, delivered a short, warm greeting. The US national anthem followed and then, hands on chests, a solemn Pledge of Allegiance(美国的爱国誓言).Students who had excelled academically gave farewell speeches. The tears in some eyes convinced me that many had deep feelings about the occasion. It was as the class motto says, “Life brings us tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry; the smil es fade; but the memories last forever.”Then came the core (the most important part) of the commencement. Hundreds of names were announced. Each graduate walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma from the principal. From the different cheers each graduate got, we had the funny sense that it was a kind of competition of who could cheer the loudest. To be honest, the presentation of diplomas got boring. A girl sitting next to me even started yawning. But it wasn‟t boring for those receiving the d iploma: they would treasure the moment the principal placed the sacred brown document in their hands for the rest of their lives.A new page in the book of that person‟s life had turned. They were glimpsing their futures: futures of challenge, hardship, perhaps loneliness too, which would take all of their courage.21. What‟s the article mainly about?A. An American high school‟s graduation ceremony.B. The opening ceremony of a sports meeting.C. A presentation of college diplomas.D. A US college‟s farewe ll party.22. Which of the following statements about the author is FALSE?A. She was one of the graduates.B. She was a foreign exchange student.C. She was excited to receive her diploma.D. She felt it great to be at the ceremony.23. The right order of the following events is______.a. Diplomas were presented to graduates.b. Students gave farewell speeches.c. From the text, we can conclude that_______.A. a diploma ensures a good jobB. a diploma guarantees a bright futureC. the commencement symbolizes the beginning of a new stage in lifeD. everyone felt excited at the presentation of the diplomaBThe secrets of happiness all lie in your Operating System. The trouble is that we get blinded by our Operating System. This is because our Operating System attempts to fit what‟s happening around us into our Operating System‟s expectations. Anything different is resisted as much as it can be.So your Operation System is always going to be riddled with flaws(缺点) and errors. It‟s in it‟s nature. This is where all progress and evolution comes from . Every flaw and bug you discover and fix in the Operating System is another leap forward in the quality of your life. The evolution of society comes from the fact that each generation rebels against the previous one. And so each generation discovers a flaw and caused an upgrade in our cultural Operating System. The established order in every field and every area of life will find itself challenged. And over time more and more flaws will be discovered about what we previously believed to be facts. This is how life progresses and advances. Now every day across the world there are hundreds of instances where people are making new discoveries and overturning old beliefs. This is the process of life.If you want something that you don‟t have ---it‟s your Op erating system that is blocking it off to you. This means you have to identify the flaw in your Operating System that is blocking you from having what you want. Then you transform the structure of your Operating System to let it in.Opportunities are around you all the time. There is never a boat that you must catch. There is another boarding all the time. It is only the fact that you aren‟t seeing the opportunities that stops you from getting what you want.Upgrading your Operating System is training it to show you the opportunities all aroundyou. And then life is like picking fruit from a tree.25. According to the passage, our Operating System ______.A. resists valuable things as more as possibleB. neglects everything that happens around usC. always attempts to meet its expectationsD. is not essential to our happiness sometimes26. The underlined part “be riddled with” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ______.A. be opposed toB. be free fromC. be friends withD. be full of27. If you want to improve the quality of your life, you should _______.A. avoid mistakes in your everyday lifeB. discover flaws in your Operating SystemC. take all the information around youD. take a suspecting attitude towards life28. According to the author, our society progresses because _____.A. the young approve of what their ancestors didB. younger generations put the wrong things rightC. computers have undated the old Operating SystemD. old computers are constantly replaced by new onesCYou never see them, but they‟re with you every time you fly. They record where you are going, how fast you‟re traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book. They‟re known as the black box. When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the India ocean on June 30, 2009, the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong. So when a French Submarine(潜水艇) detected the device‟s homing signal five days later, the discovery marked a huge toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed. In 1958, Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first mode for a black box, which became a requirement on all U.S. commercial flights by 1960. Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device was completely redesigned and moved to the rear of the plane ---the area least subject to impact --- from its original position in the landing wells(起落架舱). The same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.Modern airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots‟ conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircraft‟s final moments. Placed in an insulated(隔绝的) case and surrounded by a quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel, the boxes can withstand massive force and temperature up to 20,000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447, which crashed near Brazil on June 1, 2009, are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they‟re still likely to turn up. In the approximately 20 deep-seacrashes over the past 30 years, only one plane‟s black boxes were never recovered.29. In paragraph 1, the author wants say the black box ______.A. is an necessary device on an airplaneB. comes from a comic bookC. can prevent disasterD. can control the function of an airplane30. Why was the black box redesigned in 1965?A. New materials became available by that timeB. The early models often got damaged in the crashC. Too much space was needed for its deviceD. The early models didn‟t provide the needed data.31. The black boxes were painted orange or yellow to ______.A. distinguish them from the color of the planeB. warn people to handle them with careC. make them easily identifiedD. obey the international standards32. What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?A. There is still a good chance of their being recoveredB. There is an urgent need for them to be reconstructedC. They have stopped sending homing signalsD. They were destroyed somewhere near BrazilDHilary Smith belonged to a good family. But by the age of twenty, he had spent all the money the good old family had. He then had some trouble with the bank and was put in prison. He escaped from the prison and ran to Australia without delay.Hilary did not like Australia and Australia did not like Hilary. What he could do seemed to be one of two things: die or work. Then he remembered that he was not alone in the world. He had an aunt. She was his father‟s only sister, but his f ather used to say she brought no glory to the family. Hilary, of course, tired to discover what she had done. It seemed that she had failed to marry a nobleman. Instead, she had chosen a husband who was connected with “trade”. Of course as soon as she beca me “Mrs. Parks”, her brother considered her dead. Later on, Mr. Parks died and left her a lot of money; but that did not bring her back to life in her brother‟s opinion.Hilary discovered his aunt‟s address. Fortunately she remained faithful and honest to him even after she fell ill. So Hilary‟s star shone again, and soon he moved into her house and lived as comfortably as a sailor who had just reached harbor. He had only about a sixpence in his pocket. One thing was soon clear: his aunt was seriously ill, and nothing could cure her illness. Hilary was very worried. Fate had found a home for him, and was now going to throw out of it. There was only one thing that could save him: her will.“Will?” she said, “yes, I have made one. That was when I was a girl and had not much money. I left all my money to some religious people.”“Didn‟t you make another will when you were married?” Hilary asked. His aunt shook her head. “No,” she said in a low voice. “There was no need. When I finally had a lot of money I found I had no relations.”On the next day he went to the public library and examined a book of law. It told him what he already believed. When a woman is married, an earlier will loses its value. A new will must be made. If no new will is made, the money goes to the nearest relation. Hilary knew that he was his aunt‟s only relation. His future was safe. After a few months had passed, Hilary‟s problems became serious. He badly needed money. He had expensive tastes, and owed a lot of money to shopkeepers. They trusted him because his aunt was rich; but the debt was terrible.Unfortunately his aunt did not want to discuss money matters at all. In the end they had a quarrel about the small amount of ten pounds. Hilary was not very angry. He began to wonder about a new problem. Was it kind to want his aunt to live any longer? Was it not better for her to die now? While he was considering what to do, his aunt told him that she was going to send for her lawyer. So she was going to make a new will, Hilary thought. She might leave all her money to someone else. Soon he reached a clear conclusion. He must do a great kindness to the poor old woman. One night when the old servant who had been nursing his aunt went off, he doubled the amount of some medicine. The total amount was too great and it could just put her to sleep forever.“Thank you,” his aunt took the glass from his hand with a grateful look. “I want, more than anything, to sleep, and never to wake up again. Is that what you wish, Hilary? Don‟t blame me if I have some doubts about what you intended to do. Sick people get these ideas, you know. One thing I ought to explain to you. Mr. Parks never married me. He already had a wife and couldn‟t marry again. That made your foolish father very angry with me. Well, if I am alive tomorrow I shall make another will in your favor. If I die tonight, you will get nothing. No, Hilary, don‟t try to take the glass away. If you do that, I shall know; and I don‟t want to know. Good night, Hilary. Then, very carefully, she raised the glass to her mouth and drank.33. From the story, we learn that Hilary‟s aunt was ______.A. bad-tempered and lonelyB. kind-hearted and wiseC. careless about moneyD. Cruel to her niece34. The underlined sentence “He must do a great kindness to the poor old woman.” In paragraph 11 suggests that Hilary Smith ______.A. was determined to put his aunt‟s life to an endB. decide to do his aunt a favor to call in a lawyerC. made up his mind to take good care of his auntD. would help his aunt to donate all her money to religious people35. Which of the following is the focus of the story?A. Hilary‟s aunt‟s moneyB. Hilary Smith‟s debtsC. The intended murderD. Hilary‟s aunt‟s marriage第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

2015年普通高等学校招生全国统一考试英语(课标卷II)第Ⅰ卷第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题:每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
AMy color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seven-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night.Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradully, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise ,I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away.At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now,but I keep expecting more trouble.1. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?A.He got an older model than he had expected.B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken.C.He could have bought it at a lower price.D.He failed to find any movie shows on it.2. Which of the followi ng can best replace the phrase”signed off”in Paragraph 1?A.ended all their programsB.provided fewer channelsC.changed to commercialsD.showed all-night movies3. How did the author finally get his TV set working again?A. By shaking and hitting it.B. By turning it on and off.C. By switching channels.D. By having it repaired.4. How does the anthor sound when telling the story?A. CuriousB. AnxiousC. CautiousD. HumorousYour house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating , for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food . If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study , people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room . Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing , while cold colors make us feel less hungry . So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.Don’t forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishs. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one ,total intake(摄入)jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.5. The text is especially helpful for those who care about_______.A. their home comfortsB. their body shapeC. house buyingD. healthy diets6. A home environment in blue can help people_________.A.digest food betterB.reduce food intakeC.burn more caloriesD.regain their appetites7. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?A. Eat quickly.B. Play fast music.C. Use smaller spoons.D. Turn down the lights.8. What can be a suitable title for the test?A.Is Your Hourse Making You Fat?B.Ways of Serving DinnerC.Effects of Self-ConsciousnessD. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?More student than ever cefore are taking a gap-year (间隔年)before going to university. It used to be called the “year off”between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated(起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year. This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service(UCAS).That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible,” he said. But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hadship –young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education.“New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to £15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree.NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods,”he said.9. What do we learn about the gap year from the text?A. It is flexible in length.B. It is a time for relaxation.C. It is increasingly popular.D. It is required by universities.10. According to Tony Higgins, students taking a gap year______.A.are better prepared for college studiesB.know a lot more about their future jobsC.are more likely to leave university in debtD.have a better chance to enter top universities11. How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?A. He's puzzled.B. He's worried.C. He's surprised.D. He's annoyed.12. 第Ⅰ卷第一部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)第一节阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AWhen I was a kid,I used to spend hours listening to Adam Carolla and Dr.Drew Pinsky on their Sunday night radio show Loveline.I listened so often that I began to use one of their wellknown phrases—“good times”—in my daily conversations.Scientists have a name for this phenomenon:behavior mimicry. You’ve probably experienced this before:after spending enough time with another person, you might become familiar with his or her behavior or speech habits. You might even start to develop your friend’s habits without realizing it.There is a large body of literature about this sort of phenomenon, and it regularly happens for everything from body postures to accents to drink patterns. For example, one study found that young adults were more likely to drink their drinks directly after their samesex drinking partners, than to drink at their own paces. And the effect isn’t only limited to facetoface activities of real life .Another study found that the same “youdrinkthenIdrink” pattern held even when watching a movie! In other words, people were more likely to take a drink of their drinks in a theater after watching the actors on the screen enjoy a drink. As for most experiments, these results raise a lot of questions. The finding that behavior mimicry may at least partly account for eating behavior is still important, and has real effects on health. The researchers explain that “as long as people don’t fully recognize such important influences on intake,it will be difficult to make healthy food choices and keep a healthy diet, especially when people are exposed to the eating behavior of others”.1.The author takes his own example of using“good times”to ________.A.express his love for the show B.prove the popularity of the showC.draw the reader’s attention D.introduce the topic of the passage2.The underlined word “mimicry”in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.A.copying B.Adjusting C.recognition D.observation3.Which of the following is NOT an example of behavior mimicry?A.A boy eats his popcorn after watching the actor eats.B.A boy buys a Nike shirt when he finds his classmate has one.C.A girl unconsciously sits straight just as others do.D.A girl takes on the London accent after a month’s stay.4.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.A.behavioral mimicry is beneficial to our healthB.behavioral mimicry decides our eating behaviorC.there are doubts on the research resultsD.there are people always exposed to bad eating habitsBWhat will people die of 100 years from now? If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in bio-technology (生物技术). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today's leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories. In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100,medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so,people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells and so on, in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future. 5.According to the passage, human death is now mainly caused by ________.A.diseases and aging B.accidents and warC.accidents and aging D.heart disease and war6.In the author's opinion, today's most important advance in technology lies in ________.A.brain cells B.the InternetC.medicine D.human organs7.Humans may live longer in the future because ________.A.heart disease will be far away from us B.human organs can be repaired by new medicineC.human brains can decide the final death D.the basic materials of cells will last foreverCBesides calling 911,here is what to do in some life-threatening emergencies when no one is around to help.Lost in the wildernessFirst, you've got to acknowledge you're in trouble. Stay where you can be seen clearly and remember to rest. Keeping a sense of humor helps too—it reduces stress and helps creative thinking. In a wide open area, make a colorful cross out of rocks to show your present position.ChokingAim to hit the top of the chair against your stomach,in the soft part below the bony upside-down V of the ribs (肋骨).Make a sudden push against the chair. If you still can't breathe after six tries, call 911,even if you can't talk. Write the word choking somewhere nearby, and leave the line open until help arrives.Severe bleedingUse your hand or clean cotton,or paper towels,or a scarf,or any cloth you can find, and push down on the wound until the bleeding stops. But if you put a band around your leg tightly, you're going to close the vessels (血管) to the entire leg.In this way,you could lose your foot.Bear attackIf you surprise a bear, don't run away. That invites an attack. Instead, stand up and back away slowly, without looking the bear in the eyes. If it does charge (猛冲) at you, stick out your chest, raise your arms, and spread your legs. Shout at the bear,to frighten it. If it's going to attack, lie facedown, with your hands held firmly behind your neck. Play dead until you're sure the bear is gone.8.When you see a colorful cross made of rocks in the wilderness, you know________.A.someone is bleeding B.someone is chokingC.someone is lost D.someone is attacked by a bear9.If you are still choking after six tries, you should________.A.keep a sense of humor B.call 911 and leave the line openC.use your hand or clean cotton D.lie down with your hands behind your neck10.Don't tie around your bleeding leg tightly,or you could ________.A.stop bleeding B. cause breathlessnessC.reduce stress D. lose your foot11.The passage is mainly teaching us how to________.A.survive the emergencies B.avoid a bear attackC.deal with a choke D.find our wayDBig Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock in London. The name was given in honor of Sir Benjamin Hall, who was in charge of the work when the bell was built in 1856. It didn't strike until 3 years later. The clock has become a landmark of the United Kingdom and London, particularly in the visual media (可视媒体). When a television or film-maker wishes to quickly show a non-UK audience a certain location in Britain,a popular way to do so is to show an image of the Clock Tower. The Clock Tower is a focus of New Year celebrations in the United Kingdom, with radio and TV stations tuning to its chimes (钟声) to welcome the start of the year.Londoners who live a proper distance from the Clock Tower and Big Ben can, by means of listening to the chimes both live and on the radio or television, hear the bell strike thirteen times on New Year's Eve. This is possible because the speed of sound is a lot slower than the speed of radio waves.Big Ben has appeared in many films. In the 1978 version of The Thirty-Nine Steps, the hero attempted to halt the clock's progress to prevent a linked bomb blowing up by hanging from the minute hand of its western face. It was also used in the filming of Shanghai Knights starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, and was described as being partially destroyed in the 2012 film Doctor Who. An animated version (卡通版) of the clock was also used as the setting in the Walt Disney film The Great Mouse Detective, and was shown being destroyed by a UFO in the film Mars Attacks!12.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.The radio and TV make a mistake about the clock's chimes.B.The clock strikes 13 times to welcome the New Year.C.Benjamin was responsible for the work when the bell was built.D.The nickname of the clock was given by Benjamin.13.The second paragraph mainly wants to show us that Big Ben is ________.A.a most popular scene for film-makers B.popular place to have pictures takenC.a must-see sight for tourists to London D.a symbol of UK and London14. What would be the best title of the text?A. The origin and development of Big BenB. Sir Benjamin Hall - the founder of Big BenC. Big Ben - significance in popular cultureD. In this month’s newsletter(通讯),Peter Turner, the head teacher, warned that any cards found in school would be confiscated(没收).He wrote:“We do not wish to see any Valentine’s Day cards in school this year. Some children and parents encourage a lot of talk about boyfriends and girlfriends. We believe that such ideas should wait until children are mature enough emotionally and socially to understand the commitment involved in having or being a boyfriend or girlfriend.”Mr.Turner said any families wanting to support the Valentine’s Day idea should send cards in the post or deliver them to home addresses by hand. His views were endorsed by Ruth Rice,46,who has twins Harriet and Olivia at the school. She said,“Children at that age shouldn’t really be thinking about Valentine’s Day,they should be concentrating on their schoolwork.”They are at an age when they are impressionable(易受影响的)and most parents including myself are with Mr.Turner. “She added that the cards cause” too much competition. If someone gets a card and another doesn’t,then someone will be disappointed. However,Rajeev Takyar,40,who has two children Jai,11,and Aryan, five,at the school, said he was “outraged”.He said,“There are schools that have banned conkers(栗子游戏)and snowballs, and now Valentine’s Cards.”I think banning the cards stops children from having social skills. How are they going to learn about relationships otherwise? It’s ridiculous. Alec Suttenwood, father of three children, said of the ban:“It’s totally ridiculous. Young children just send the cards to each other as friends and to their parents. It’s just a bit of harmless fun. There is no difference between this and Mother’s or Father’s Day.”26.Which of the following is the best title?A.Ban on Valentine’s Day cards at school is well received.B.Ban on Valentine’s Day cards at school causes argument.C.British children spend too much time talking about love.D.A British high school bans Valentine’s Day cards.27.The underlined word “endorsed” means________.A.criticized B.quoted C.disapproved D.approved28.What do you know about Harriet and Olivia?A.They will send Valentine’s Day cards this year. B.They are strongly against the school’s decision.C.They are of the same age. D.They are the children of Rajeev Takyar.29.According to Rajeev Takyar,________.A.sending Valentine’s Day cards helps develop children’s social skillsB.banning Valentine’s Day cards will benefit childrenC.the cards cause too much competition among childrenD.children are too young to talk about love30.The newsletter by Peter Turner probably appeared on________.A.February 22 B.February 6 C.March 18 D.August 1BA black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying.Because no light can get out, people can’t see black holes. Spac e telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes act differently from other ones.Black holes can be big or small. Scientists think the smallest black holes are as small as just one atom. These black holes are very tiny but have the mass of a large mountain. Mass is the amount of matter, or “staff”, in an object.Another kind of black hole is called “stellar”(星球黑洞). Its mass can be up to 20 times more than the mass of the s un. There may be many stellar mass black holes in Earth’s galaxy. Earth’s galaxy is called the Milky Way.The largest black holes are called “supermassive”(超大质量黑洞). These black holes have masses that are more than one million suns together. Scientists have found proof that every large galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its center. The supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy has a mass equal to about four million suns and would fit inside a very large ball that could hold a few million Earths.Scientists think the smallest black holes formed when the universe began. Stellar black holes are made when the center of a very big star falls in upon itself, or falls apart. When this happens, it exploded part of the star into space. Scientists think supermassive black holes were made at the same time as the galaxy they are in.A black hole can not be seen because strong gravity pulls all of the light into the middle of the black hole. But scientists can see how the strong gravity affects the stars and gas around the black hole. Scientists can study stars to find out if they are flying around, or orbiting a black hole. When a black hole and a star are close together, high-energy light is made. This kind of light cannot be seen with human eyes. Scientists use satellites and telescopes in space to see the high-energy light.31. The gravity of a black hole may become so strong that light cannot get out when ____________.A. the star is going to dieB. special tools are used on itC. other stars come close to itD. it is seen from the space telescopes32. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. A black hole can be very tiny but extremely heavy.B. The gravity of a black hole holds all light in its center.C. Scientists observe high-energy light through their own eyes.D. Some small black holes came into being as early as the universe.33. Which can be inferred from the passage?A. Every galaxy must have a black hole.B. A galaxy is the center of the universe.C. A galaxy consists of a large group of stars and planets.D. Earth’s galaxy is called the Milky Way.34. What does the last sentence in Paragraph 5 suggest?A. Neither the sun nor the earth is as heavy as a black hole.B. There is only one supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.C. The supermassive black hole had existed before the Milky Way was formed.D. There is a reason why the large black holes are called “supermassive”.35. The last two paragraph mainly focus on the question of _________.A. what a black hole isB. how black holes formC. how big black holes areD. how scientists know about black holesCThe computer keyboard helped kill shorthand—a system of rapid handwriting, and now it’s threatening to finish off handwriting as a whole. When handwritten essays were introduced on the SAT exams for the class of 2012, just 15% of the most1.5 million students wrote their answers in cursive(草写字母). The rest? Block letters. And those college hopefuls are just the first edge of a wave of US students who no longer get much handwriting instructions in the primary grades, frequently 10 minutes a day or less. As a result, more and more students struggle to read and write cursive. At Keene Mill Elementary School in Springfield, all their poems and stories are typed. Children in Fairfax County schools are taught keyboarding beginning in kindergarten. Older students who never mastered handwriting say it doesn’t affect their grades. There are those who say the culture is at a crossing, turning from the written word to the typed one. If handwriting becomes a lost form of communication, does it matter? It was at University Virginia that researchers recently discovered a previously unknown poem by Robert, written in his unique script. Handwritten documents are more valuable to researchers, historians say, because their authenticity(真实性) can be confirmed. Students also find them more fascinating. The loss of handwriting also may be a cognitive(认知的) opportunity missed. Several academic studies have found that good handwriting skills at a young age can help children express their thoughts better—a lifelong benefit. It doesn’t take much to teach better handwriting skills. At some schools in Prince George’s County, elementary school students use a program called Handwriting Without Tears for 15 minutes a day. They learn the correct formation of manuscript letters through second grade, and cursive letters in third grade. There are always going to be some kids who struggle with handwriting because of their particular neurological(神经系统的) writing, learning issues or poor motor skills. Educators often point to this factor in support of keyboarding.36. What is the author concerned about after 2012 Sat exams?A. Keyboarding.B. Shorthand.C. Handwriting.D. Block letters.37. A poem by Robert mentioned in the passage is used to ____________.A. prove how valuable handwriting isB. explain what a famous poet he isC. show how unique his poem isD. stress how fascinating the documents are38. The example of Handwriting Without Tears helps to argue that _____________.A. the schools are responsible for the loss of handwritingB. the loss of handwriting is a cognitive opportunity missedC. it doesn’t take much to teach better handwriting skillsD. the culture is turning from the written word to the typed one39. According to the author, when is a perfect time to learn handwriting?A. Kindergarten.B. Primary school.C. High school.D. College.40. What is the author’s attitude towards this debate?A. Devotion.B. Encouragement.C. Critical.D. Objective.DMost young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms—football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face li nked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.41. What sports are popular among people in winter in the passage?A. Soccer and golf.B. Skiing and skating.C. Cycling and hockey.D. Mountaineering.42. The underlined word “passion” in Paragraph 2 could best be replaced by ______.A. strong emotionB. good wayC. better feelingD. enough affection43. Mountaineering is a sport, not a game because_______.A. it has man-made rulesB. it is too dangerous for climbersC. it can’t bring people joy or leisureD. it is free for climbers to use their own methods44. We know from the passage that _______.A. mountaineering has no appeal for peopleB. physical quality is more important than mental one for climbersC. a mountain climber passes his best by the age of thirtyD. it is possible for an old man of fifty or sixty to climb the Alps45. What is the best title for the passage?A. Sports in winterB. Team work in climbingC. MountaineeringD. The quality for mountaineering
English as a Foreign LanguageWho taught you to speak English? Yourparents, while you were a young child? Yourteachers at school? Perhaps even the BBCas a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow youhave developed an understanding of what israpidly becoming a truly global language. There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangersof“mono-culturalism”, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary, I would have thought-although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India(where many of them speak at least some English)and Pakistan(the same situation with India). . .If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonald’s burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的), will it kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well. When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. “The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it’s like a rose, ”he said. “But who would ever want their garden just full of rose? ”Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don’t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that’s fine by me.【文章大意】作者以独特的视角分析了英语的发展前景和人们的种种顾虑。

Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Not many people know about the clouded leopard. Even scientists don’t know much about the animal in the wild because it is so private. We do know that the clouded leopard isn’t actually a leopard. It is a species of its own. However, it does have spots like a leopard. They help it blend into the background in the forest. What else do we know about the cat? It is one of the best climbers of all wild cats. This skill is clearly imprinted in the kittens early on by their mothers and by instinct. In the wild, the cat lives in the tropical rain forests of Asia. It hunts small animals, such as squirrels and monkeys. It is listed on the United States Endangered Species Act. This protects it from being hunted. Scientists have speculated that the wild population is getting smaller, but no actual numbers are available.into extinction. The Clouded Leopard Project has recently begun a conservation effort in Thailand. It is a natural home of the clouded leopard. Funds will be given to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo to help with the breeding of these cats. Part of the money also will help save the habitat of the wild cats. People will work to monitor these wild cats. They will be photographed instead of being sedated, or drugged, to be tagged(加标签). Sedating clouded leopards could cause the cats’ bodies to lose too much water, or worse. The project has had some great successes in the last few years. Two cubs were born in the United States, and two were born in Thailand. Members of the Clouded Leopard Project hope the urge to protect such species will become embedded in people’s minds. They sponsor several education programs at zoos. They also sponsor programs to directly help the cats. Through their work they ultimately will increase the population of this species.65. What made a clouded leopard not easy to find in the forest?A. Spots like a leopard.B. A species of its own.C. Best climbing skills.D. Extinction of such animals.66. _____ is not included in the Clouded Leopard Project?A. Breeding clouded leopards in zoos.B. Monitoring the cats by labeling them.C. The Clouded Leopard Project aims at increasing the population of the cat.D. Observing clouded leopards’ behavior protects the cats from being hunted.(B)(C)With greenhouse gas emissions(排放)hitting record levels and passing climate scientist's worst predictions, a new group of Chinese activists is making its voice heard at the United Nations climate talks, the COP17, which was held in Durban, South Africa. The delegation of independent Chinese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) believes that civil society must play a bigger role in the global climate crisis. C Plus is the name given to the project launched by 42 Chinese NGOs, calling for domestic and global action to fight climate change. And they think the best way of demanding governments' action is to take action by themselves. The message is clear: climate action is too important and too urgent. It can't wait. The top-down process of negotiations that we are seeing at the UN is too slow.C Plus has three components, which together explain its name. C Plus stands for: Beyond Commitment. This means that NGOs must put pressure on their governments to achieve targets that are beyond those that have been officially stated. Second is Beyond China -- in other words, NGOs outside and inside of China together must strive to influence their respective governments to take action. Finally, Beyond Climate. The project targets not just carbon reduction but othergovernment's task of environment responsibility and raising public awareness in environment protection. And NGOs can claim some notable successes. NGOs sponsored “26-degree air conditioning office”among the public, which later became a government regulation. A group of Chinese citizens organized together and stopped the construction of a dangerous chemical plant in Xiamen. In total, there are 3,539 environment NGOs in China, in which 55.2 percent now have their own offices, and 26 percent have fixed source of investment. However, most environment NGOs still face problems including difficulty in raising money, shortage in personnel and weak organization ability in their development process. In Durban, Chinese NGOs have arrived as a team and are prepared to state their demands.72. The passage is mainly about _____.A. Durban climate change conferenceB. environment NGOs in ChinaC. C plus project launched by NGOsD. achievements of NGOs73. Which of the following is true about the C Plus?A. It is an organization devoted to controlling the greenhouse gas emission.B. It is a program aiming at influencing government to take action to protect environment.C. It is a project designed by the government to unite NGOs inside and outside China.D. It is a statement calling for public awareness in environment protection.74. Most environment NGOs don’t lack _____.A. financial supportB. human resourcesC. development goalsD. organizational skills75. What can be inferred from the passage about the NGOs?A. They once pushed the government to make a regulation concerning office temperature.B. They pushed forward the slow negotiations by adopting the top-down style.C. They were directly involved in making environment-related policies.D. They successfully pressurized the government to achieve the unofficially stated targets. Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for eachAutism is a disorder of early development that causes severe problems in thinking, communicating with others, and feeling a part of the outside world. Taken from the Greek word autos meaning “alone,” autism prevents children from developing normal social relationships, even with their parents. Not all autistic infants and children are alike; in fact, there is no single typical clinical picture of the disorder. However, certain types of behavior are noted in a majority of autistic children. Autistic infants will not cuddle, and they do not like to be picked up. The usual things that children do to imitate adults, such as waving goodbye, are not observed in autistic children. Instead, autistic children very often repeat such movements as flicking a hand, twisting an arm or leg, or banging the head over and over. Strange gestures and distorted facial expressions are common.Language develops slowly, if at all. Some autistic children remain totally silent, while others merely repeat words they hear or communicate by gestures. They have little or no interest in making friends. They smile rarely, if ever, and will avoid making eye contact. Unlike normal children, they tend to fixate on a single object or task, such as spinning the wheels on a toy car over and over.At one time autism was blamed on bad parenting. Now itis believed to be caused by abnormalities in the brain. Several possible causes of these abnormalities have been proposed: an illness the mother suffered during her pregnancy; too little oxygen at the time of birth; or possiblyan abnormal gene. In some cases, X rays have revealed abnormalities in the structure of the brain itself. There is no way to diagnose autism apart from observing the child's behavior closely over a period of time.Although some patient-tailored programs can help children function better, the life of these children is generally hard to predict. Some will remain severely impaired throughout their lives. A majority always will depend heavily on support from relatives and professional caregivers, and may require special living arrangements and close supervision. However, progressive changes in the treatment of these children have enabled about one in six to live independently and work productively. What’s more, the intelligence level of the child partly affects the ability to function.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. If you have been following the news you will know that the world’s population recently reached seven billion – probably on 31st October. The statistics concerning human population growth are astonishing. It was only 12 years ago, in 1999, that the world’s population reached six billion. In 1969 there were 3.5 billion people on the planet, which is to say our numbers have doubled in only 42 years. A century ago, in 1911, there were only 1.8 billion of us: 26% of today’s total. As for future population growth, it seems there will probably be eight billion people by 2030 and nine billion by around 2050. After that, predictions vary: many experts think the total will rise more slowly, perhaps reaching ten billion by the end of the century; but a few believe the fast rise might continue, leading to a global population of as many as 15 billion by 2100. There are big differences between rates of population growth around the world. The fastest rates are generally in the world’s poorer countries, including those in sub-Saharan Africa, while the populations of rich countries are mostly growing much more slowly, or even shrinking in a few cases. (Germany and Japan, for example, will have smaller populations in 2050 than they do now.) This fact explains another interesting statistic: in 1900 Europe contained around 25% of the world’s people, but in 2050 it will have less than 10%.There are many reasons for fast population growth, but the most significant include medical advances and generally improved standards of living in poor countries, which mean fewer deaths from diseases or from malnutrition. Indeed, average life expectancy across the world has risen 20 years since the 1950s, from 48 to 68, and the biggest rises have been in poor countries. Some people already talk of a crisis of overpopulation, expecting there to be wars over access to natural resources and warning that, because those resources are limited, it is impossible for seven billion people (let alone nine or ten) to have the kind of high-consumption lifestyles that people in the world’s richer countries currently enjoy. Others, however, believe the planet can accommodate another two or three billion humans without a social or environmental disaster. We can only hope the optimists will be proved right.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS)81. When was the world’s population half of what it is now?82. There seems to be a connection between a country’s rates of population and_________________________________________.83. What contributed to the fast population growth?84. Some people predicted that the conflict between _______________________ may lead towars.第II卷(共45分)I.Translation (20%)Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1. 是到了我们为国家承担责任的时候了。
