But making the transition between school and full-time blue-collar work during the break never gets any easier. For a student like me who considers any class beforenever seem to understand why I’m so relieved to be back at school or that my summer vacation has been anything but a vacation. There are few people as self-confident as a college student who has never been out in the real world. People of my age always seem to overestimate the value of their time and knowledge. In fact, all the classes did not prepare me for my battles with the machine I ran in the plant, which would jam whenever I absent-mindedly put in a part backward or upside down. The most stressful thing about blue-collar life is knowing your job could disappear overnight. Issues like downsizing and overseas relocation had always seemed distant to me until my co-workers told me that the unit I was working in would shut down within six months and move to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour. After working 12-hour shifts in a factory, the other options have become only too clear. When I’m back at the university, skipping classes and turning in lazy re-writes seems too irresponsible after seeing what I would be doing without school. All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound stale now ring true. These lessons I’m learning, however precious, are always tinged (带有) with a sense of guilt. Many people pass their lives in the places I briefly work, spending 30 years where I spend only two months at a time. “This job pays well, but it’s hell on the body,” said one co-worker. “Study hard and keep reading,” she added. My experiences in the factories have inspired me to make the most of my college years before I enter the real world for good.40.How did the author look back on his summer days while at college?A.They brought him nothing but torture.B.They were no holiday for him at all.C.They were a relief from his hard work at school.D.They offered him a chance to know more people.41.Which of the following is closest to the underlined word “torture” in the first paragraph?A.Misery.B.Fortune.C.Anxiety.D.Availability. 42.What does the author say about college students?A.They expect too much from the real world.B.They have little interest in blue-collar life.C.They think too highly of themselves.D.They are confident about their future.43.What, according to the author, is most frustrating for blue-collar workers?A.They do not get decent pay.B.They do not have job security.C.They have to work 12-hour shifts.D.They have to move from place to place.44.Why does the author feel somewhat guilty?A.He realizes there is a great divide between his life and that of blue-collar workers.B.He looks down upon the mechanical work at the assembly line.C.He has not done much to help his co-workers at the factory.D.He has stayed at school just for the purpose of escaping from the real world.45.In what important way has the author’s work experience changed him?A.He learned to be more practical.B.He acquired a sense of urgency.C.He came to respect blue-collar workers.D.He came to appreciate his college education.Dreams, according to Carl Jung, reveal a certain amount of reality hidden during waking consciousness. In Jungian philosophy, the conflict and chaos experienced in dreams finally bring order to our lives. While Jung’s mystical theories are debatable, he was not mistaken about the importance of dreaming. A growing number of reports show that a continuous lack of dreaming is damaging our waking hours in many ways. This trend is causing damage to our immune and metabolic systems, let alone the electronic products that keep us up late at night are ruining our sleep patterns, which has long-term consequences on our memory system. One study showed that not allowing mice to have adequate amounts of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the stage in which we dream, the mice couldn’t strengthen memories. You might think this is just a sleep problem, but dreaming is inseparable from our nighttime rest. We sleep in cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes; in a sleep cycle, we go through non-REM sleep before hitting REM. As the night progresses, REM sleep periods increase in length while deep sleep (one of the stages of non-REM sleep) decreases. The longer we sleep, the more time we spend in REM, which is why we are often dreaming when waking up in the morning. If we sleep less than seven hours, however, it becomes harder to achieve this level of REM.The combination of sleeping and dreaming acts as an emotional stabilizer. We recover from emotional hurt faster when we sleep and dream properly. However, we’re not getting enough sleep to cycle through the stages to take advantage of this natural circadian anti-depressant (抗抑郁剂) — dreams. Instead, we get depressed and turn to alcohol or medicines to get to sleep, which only makes things worse because even one drink leads to late REM while anti-depressants promote deep sleep at the expense of REM.We’re paying for this lack of dreaming in many ways. For example, a 2021 study stated that compared with quiet rest and non-REM sleep, REM promoted the formation of associative networks and the integration of unassociated information. V olunteers thatexperienced more REM sleep were better equipped for solving problems requiring innovative solutions.Rowan Hooper, the managing editor at New Scientist, writes that dreams that include an “emotional core” appear to be a main function of REM sleep and that we should look at sleep patterns as seriously as we do diet and exercise habits.46.What’s Carl Jung’s view about dreams?A.They cause chaos.B.They damage immunity.C.They reveal secrets.D.They mirror reality.47.Why is the sleep process explained in Paragraph 3?A.To show a dream mainly occurs during REM sleep.B.To prove the minimum sleep time should be seven hours.C.To prove dream problems and sleep problems are attached.D.To show people often dream when waking up in the morning.48.Which of the following statements is true according to the author?A.Deep sleep is one of the stages of REM sleep.B.Adequate REM sleep contributes to a better memory.C.A sound sleep without dreams brings about stable emotions.D.The longer we sleep, the less time we spend in REM.49.What conclusion can be inferred from Paragraph 5?A.Dreaming promotes creativity.B.Dreaming helps fight depression.C.The brain still receives new information during REM sleep.D.The brain is paying the price for having more non-REM sleep.50.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.The importance of sleep lies in dreams.B.The absence of dreams is terrible for us.C.Dreaming patterns are more important than we realize.D.Dreaming has mystical power of strengthening memories. Many years ago, I bumped into an old friend of mine. He had devoted his life to acting but had never been quite successful. In his middle age, he seemed defeated and sad.I thought of his dogged perseverance. Was it smart or foolish? What could he haveachieved? Had he quit his dream of acting and moved on? Our culture does not look kindly upon quitting. Failure is perfectly acceptable as long as it eventually results in success. We chant “Winners never quit” and “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.” We lap up stories of persistence, of the author who submitted stories for years before her novels were published or of the athlete who trained since childhood to win gold at the Olympics.Persistence pays off when it is rewarded with success, but it does not reward every person. For every JK Rowling, there are thousands of aspiring writers who will never get published. For every Olympic athlete, there are innumerable others who trained every day of their lives and never made the cut.We all agree that doing the same things and expecting a different result is unwise. So why do we believe that persevering through failure after failure is a good idea? We consider quitting in the face of failure to be weak. We believe that perseverance is the key to success. Perseverance is only one part of success. You need talent or skill, as well as passion and drive. Luck and timing are also key to any great success. Our society believes that anything is possible, as long as you “believe”. But not everyone can make it. Quitting when you’ re not ahead is sometimes the smartest thing to do. Obviously, if you enjoy a pursuit, regardless of its outcome, you should continue. There are two primary reasons. First, some people are convinced that earning a living is wasting time that they could spend enjoying themselves or uncovering their true talents. If this is the case with you, recall your last long vacation. Was it two weeks of complete enjoyment? More likely it was a week and a half of fun in the sun, with another half a week of “Boy, I can’t wait to get back to work.” If you didn’t feel such vacation blues, then imagine taking a leave of absence. You could use it to work on a novel, attend classes or just sit around watching TV. At the end of three months, in all likelihood, your self-respect would be at an all-time low. While all work and no play are not good, all play and no work are disastrous. We need to feel we are accomplishing something. We also need some form of order in our lives. The second and perhaps more common reason for people not to like their work is that they feel trapped. Once you’ve been at a company for five years and get married, have amortgage and a child, you often feel you have very little choice about jumping ship if things aren’t turning out as you’d planned. A steady paycheck can be the biggest restrict of all. People hate having to do something because they have no other choice. If you find yourself hating your job, your option takes the form of an up-to-date resume. You might also take a weekly glance through the help-wanted section, and make some visits to industry functions where low-key networking can take place. You’re not giving up on your current job. Rather, you are providing yourself with an option. If things get unbearable at work, you could jump ship.At the core of adopting a positive attitude to your workplace is, above all, assuming responsibility for your own situation. Most people feel controlled by their environment, but they really aren’t. They have to learn to manage that environment so they can get from it what they need.56.What are people likely to do after a long vacation according to the author? (No more than 10 words)57.What can people get from work according to the second paragraph? (No more than 10 words)58.How do you interpret the underlined word in the last paragraph? (One word)59.What do you think is the main idea of the passage? (No more than 15 words)60.What will you do if you hate your job one day in the future? Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest; a competition she won last year.As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the con test again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface. An enligh tenment came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into mine without even realizing it.Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter’s experience. While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.4.What do we learn from the first paragraph?A. Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities.B. Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.C. Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time.D. A lot of distractions compete for children’s time nowadays.5.What does the author say about her own writing experience?A. She does not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.B. Her way to success is full of pains and frustrations.C. She is constantly under pressure of writing more.D. Most of her stories are rejected by publishers.6.Why does Rebecca wan t to enter this year’s writing contest?A. She wants to share her story with readers.B. She believes she possesses real talent for writing.C. She is sure of winning with her mother’s help.D. She has won a prize in the previous contest.7.What’s the author’s advice for parents?A. A writing career is not for every child to pursue.B. Children should be allowed room to grow through experiences.C. Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.D. Children should be given every chance to voice their options.Andrea Lankford quit her job after spending 12 years as a National Park Service forester specializing in search and rescue missions in scenic and remote American landscapes. However, decades later, three young hikers went missing on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). She found herself unable to turn away from the three separate cases despite challenges in the inquiry into them.Trail of the Lost was her answer. It’s an absorbing nonfiction narrative (叙事) about the three hikers, including their lives and those of the people looking for them. It also explores the history of the PCT and the rich subculture, practices and even literature that surround it and those who undertake the 2,650-mile journey. The book is a rich multilayered narrative that works on three different levels. The first is the story of each of the three hikers. Lankford offers a biography (传记) of each of the missing men and shows them through the eyes of those who knew them well and those who joined the search.Right underneath the narratives about the three hikers are the stories of everyone looking for them. Lankford played a role in each search but she allowed friends, family and even strangers to occupy center stage throughout most of the narrative. The story looks at the role of missing person Facebook groups in the searches and how crucial word of mouth can be. Many warm-hearted individuals came forth and became instrumental in the searches orprovided valuable information. But Lankford also writes of the many who lied for no apparent reason and confused the investigations. The narrative also shines a light on diverse aspects of the PCT. Lankford, who has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and was the first person to mountain bike the 800-mile Arizona Trail, knows just how the PCT is physically and mentally demanding. Besides, the book explores threats from mountain lions to people with bad intentions who don’t observe the PCT’s unspoken moral rules, serving as a revelation of the well-known, hidden or ignored dangers of the PCT.Written with a clear, fast-paced, straightforward style, Trail of the Lost is as full of hope and humanity as it is packed with pain, sorrow, danger and tension. Read it and you’ll find more than you seek.8.What led Lankford to write Trail of the Lost?A. Her love for her prior career.B. Her strong attachment to the PCT.C. The stress from the missing families.D. Her investigation into hikers’ disappearance.9.What is presented on the second level of the book?A. Efforts by different people in searches.B. A string of wilderness survival tips.C. Approaches to information classification.D. Respective stories of the three hikers.10.What’s the purpose of mentioning Lankford’s previous adventures?A. To promote her book.B. To make her a celebrity.C. To motivate hikers to challenge themselves.D. To stress the difficulty of hiking the PCT.11.What can we say about the book?A. It targets single youth.B. It’s a romantic novel.C. It’s based on actual events.D. It’s a detailed account of a journey. The idea that we need to eat meat to get enough protein and iron is a common misconception. It ignores the abundance of protein and iron in many plant-based foods. Likewise, while we typically associate omega-3 fatty acids with fish, fish themselves absorb these into their tissue by eating seaweed, which we can consume directly without theconcerns of exposure to microplastics in fish flesh.Indeed, a whole-food, plant-based diet can provide all essential nutrients except for vitamin B12. While modern sanitation (卫生) allows humans to consume clean produce unpolluted by dirt, we can easily and cheaply obtain oral B12 supplements (补充).Obviously, significantly reducing our consumption of meat would carry vast benefits. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death around the world. Eating highly processed foods and red meat has been repeatedly demonstrated to promote underlying mechanisms of cancer and cardiovascular disease, such as inflammation(炎症)and damage to the lining of blood vessels (血管).Mounting evidence points to the benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet. Studies from 2017found that a vegetarian diet is associated with a 25 percent relative risk reduction for coronary heart disease and an 8 percent relative risk reduction for cancer, with a vegan diet related to a 15 percent relative risk reduction for cancer.Besides harming ourselves, eating meat harms others. Factory farming practices oftenOvercrowding of livestock and workers promotes the spread of disease among both people and animals, putting us all at risk for future pandemics. The overuse of antibiotics (抗生素) to accelerate animal growth and precautiously treat the infections anticipated as a result of living in unclean and overcrowded conditions can promote antibiotic resistance. While national and international action is undoubtedly needed to fight immoral factory farming practices, educators and policy makers should consider the importance of acting as role models for healthy behaviors themselves as well as advocating for policies that ensure better nutritional access and education for others. All of these should not be excuses for individuals to resist changes in their own lives and communities. Societies change only when enough individuals within them alter their behavior.12.The author writes the first two paragraphs mainly to ______.A. introduce a false belief in nutrition sourceB. compare the differences between two dietsC. highlight the importance of nutrition intakeD. show the concerns of healthy diet advocates13.Which of the following logic chains is reasonable according to the passage?A.B.C.D.14.What does the underline d word “entail” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A. escape.B. involve.C. balance.D. overcome. 15.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. A Meatless Diet Is Better for YouB. Food Problems Call for Joint EffortsC. Say No to Processed Meat ConsumptionD. Eatable Greens or Not? That Is a Question二、七选五16.We humans are comparison creatures. ①________ This quality may have evolved as a means of helping us fit into the social hierarchy (等级) of the cultures we inhabited. Regardless of the reasons, social comparison plays a significant role in how we view and evaluate ourselves, and how we interact with our world. It used to be that our primary reference of comparison was our local communities, primarily neighbors and co-workers. Because we tend to gather around those similar to ourselves in terms of educational level, work income, and shared interests, the range of differences when we compared ourselves to others was fairly small. Unfortunately, with the emergence of the Internet, we can now compare ourselves to literally anyone in the world. ②________ What had in previous generations been a small gap in our comparisons has now become so large and unattainable.③________ When so many people that are easily discoverable on the Internet seem to be so successful. famous, influential and beautiful, given our preference to compare, it is difficult not to have it influence how we view ourselves. Sadly, these comparisons usually result in our feeling inadequate and “less than”.These harmful comparisons also damage our emotional lives. When we feel lacking, we experience a variety of unpleasant and unhealthy emotions. We feel jealousy and envy for what others have and what we lack. ④________It’s one thing to realize that you compare yourself to others. It’s another thing to recognize that social comparison is often corrosive (逐步侵蚀的) to you in so many ways psychologically and emotionally. It’s an entirely other thing to stop yourself from comparing yourself to others. ⑤________A. We are constantly measuring ourselves against other people.B. Yet it is possible, and it is worth the effort for your mental health.C. Thus, we are now exposed to groups that are quite different from us.D. AAs a nation of animal lovers, Britain has been rocked by a study that at least ten million pets suffer mental or physical stress. Two million dogs are left alone daily for longer than recommended and 750,000 rabbits are fed too little grass, at least three million dogs and cats have never been vaccinated(接种疫苗), the research indicates. Shocked animal welfare campaigners are calling on owners to give their pets urgent attention.A spokesman for animal charity said, “We know that owners love their pets, but many do not understand what their pets need.”The charity’s survey is the first to measure the well-being of Britain’s 12 million cats, eight million dogs and 1.7 million pet rabbits. It found that five million cats, four million dogs and more than 700000 rabbits would be suffering mental or physical stress because their owners do not look after them properly. About 2.4 million dogs are mainly fed on leftovers, rather than nutritionally balanced dog food.About 1.9 million dogs are left alone each day for more than four hours, even though vets say four hours should be the maximum. Around 15 percent of owners believe it is acceptable to leave a dog for eight hours without attention while four per cent say dogs can be abandoned for more than ten hours without suffering. The survey also revealed the Britain’s cats are overfed, with more than half of ownersadmitting their cats are overweight. Rabbits are also neglected. In the wild they live in large groups, but 67 percent of pet rabbits live on their own, which creates the risk of boredom and stress.Another spokesman said, “Our report reveals that there is much work to do to raise awareness of what pets need to live healthy and happy lives.”21. Biology textbookC. newspaper advertisementD. book reviewBA head teacher at a primary in Glasgow of Scotland has received a pressing request from a parent. Would it be possible,on the last day of the summer term, to separate the playing field so that a helicopter can land?It is for an 11-year-old pupil whose parents want to do something special to mark their last day at the school. They have spent $500 on a helicopter so that their child can make what they believe is a fitting arrival for the school prom(舞会).$250-an-hour stretch limousines(加长豪华车)are being hired out at such a rate that most firms are fully-booked for Friday, July 23, the day on which most primary schools break up. The trend to celebrate the end of primary school in such an ostentatious(铺张的)way is new to us. After all, it’s only in the past five years that the high school prom, imported from the US and intended for 16-year-olds, has become popular in this country. In the past days, the end of primary school would have been marked with an autograph bookor T-shirt that friends could sign their names and messages. So what has changed? It is the children’s expectations. They see their older brothers and sisters celebrate in a certain way and want to do the same.Instead of telling them to wait until they are old enough, parents are only too easily persuaded that their children’s wishes should be honored. “More and more parents work, so I think there is a whole generation of parents who are feeling guilty about their children,”says Professor Cary Cooper, a psychologist at Lancaster University. “Because they spend too less time with their children, they tend to satisfy their demands far more than they would have done 20 years ago.”Thankfully, Mearns Primary in Newton Mearns turned down the parents’ request. But in a few years’ time, who knows the ways that things are going?24. The text is mainly about _____.A. the various ways to celebrate the end of primary schoolB. the bad trend in celebrating the end of primary schoolC. the most exciting moment at the end of primary schoolD. the gifts parents prepare for their children’s graduation25. Which of the following is NOT true about the school prom?A. It was introduced from the US.B. It is mainly intended for 16-year-old students.C. It is usually held at the end of the school year.D. It became popular in the US two years ago.27. We can infer from the text that_____.A. parents work harder than before to make up for feeling guilty about their childrenB. parents tended to satisfy more of their children’s demands 20 years agoC. students often succeed in persuading their parents to satisfy their demandsD. parents tell their children to celebrate their graduation until they are old enoughCAt times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when Iwas 12,I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was extremely nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico,to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.But despite her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn, even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year,I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers:While many of them wanted to stay close to home,I couldn’t wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive and excited for me.One big thing I realized during my senior year,as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards: getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to h ave all A’s.I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what’s important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life .Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that’s why I have turned out so strong and independent.28. When the author decided to go to Puerto Rico, his mother________.A.wanted to go with him B.worried about his safetyC.didn’t allow him to do so D.asked his grandmother for advice29. Why did the author decide to move away for college?A.He wanted to be different from his peers.B.He planned to keep away from his mother.C.He wanted to be independent in the outside world.D.He intended to make his mother unhappy.30. We can learn f rom Paragraph 3 that the author’s mother________.A.was too strict with him B.cared little about his learningC.used to expect nothing from him D.had a high expectation of him31. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text?A.His mother’s deep love for him B.His long way to become independentC.His good relationship with his mother D.The importance of his mother’s trust and supportDThe Fourth "21th Century Cup" National English Speaking Competition is to be held in Shanghai.Organizers: China Daily and Shanghai Broadcasting Network.Co-ordinater: China University English Speaking Association (CUESA).Co-sponsors (联办单位): English Speaking Union (ESU), Lotus Software (China)Co. Wearing gloves to protect their hands, they filled garbage bags with everything from fishing line and dirty plastic bottles to old grocery bags. The girls and about 150 others were volunteering in the International Coastal Cleanup, an annual event that raises awareness of the importance of keeping the wor ld‘s waterways and oceans clean. The cleanup was sponsored by an organization called the Ocean Conservancy that works to protect ocean animals and their homes. Unfortunately, a lot of trash never makes it into a trash can. It blows in the wind, and travels down streams and rivers to the sea. Trash isn‘t just ugly — it can be dangerous for creatures that live in the water. Every year, plastic trash like old fishing gear, shopping bags, and food wrappers kills one million sea birds and 100,000 sea mammals and sea turtles. Sometimes these animals get tangled (绞在一起) up in garbage and die. Sometimes they eat trash that chokes or poisons them. Sea turtles, for example, mistake plastic bags for the jellyfish they love to eat.At the Anacostia River, Cammy helped the volunteers pick up 2,380 pounds of trash in just a few hours along three miles of shoreline. ―When you hear about a coastal cleanup all you think is that you have to pick up trash,‖ says Cammy. ―But then you get there and find out it is actually fun! I like meeting all the other people and helping out t he environment.‖ This one-day event tells us something to keep in mind the other 364 days of the year: that we are all connected to the ocean, and that you can help keep the ocean clean by putting trash in the right place. In the past 21 years, volunteers with the International Coastal Cleanup have cleared millions of pounds of litter from 211,460 miles of coastline worldwide. That distance is the equivalent(等同物) of going around the Earth eight times! In 2006, 358,617 volunteers cleaned 34,560 miles of shoreline, collecting 7 million tons of trash! In the 2007 cleanup, nearly half a million people in 70 countries joined.61. It can be seen from the passage that _______.A. there are 150 participants in the International Coastal CleanupB. the trash may choke or poison creatures like sea turtlesC. the volunteers work on the shore for a whole year.D. the trash the volunteers collect can go around the Earth eight times65. Complete the diagram / Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information for the passage.Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answerThe United Nations estimates that world food production will have to increase by 70% by 2050. A world population growing in number and wealth will require one billion tons more grain each year, and two hundred million tons more meat. The Food and Agriculture Organization says those gains will have to happen largely on existing land. However, according to a new report which provides the f irst "global assessment of the state of the planet's land resources‖, large parts of all continents are experiencing damage. One-fourth of all land is described as "highly degraded(退化) ". The greatest threats are losses of soil quality, biodiversity and water resources. Therefore, production rates have been slowing in many areas. Though new agricultural methods and technology are used to increase food production in many countries, yet they have also harmed the land and water. Thus, it calls for greater use of ways that can expand production while avoiding damage to ecosystems. One such practice might be the use of "fertilizer trees." These are fast-growing trees and shrubs(矮树丛)whose leaves and roots help make soil richer.Oluyede Ajayi, the leader author of the study, said "Basically these are trees that can fix nitrogen(氮) from the atmosphere and change them into nitrates(硝酸盐)for fertilizer, for organic fertilizer, for the soil."The farmers who planted fertilizer trees reported double the corn production of other farmers. In Zambia, the fertilized fields provided up to 114 additional days of food. Farmers say they need less rainwater if they use fertilizer trees. The trees reduce water runoff and soil erosion.A recent study found that about 400,000 farmers in southern Africa are using them. Write your answers on your answer sheet.Marti Sementelli has been a baseball player since preschool, throwing plastic balls and swinging a tiny wood bat from the time she was 3 years old. She was a solid player at every youth level, and sometimes a star. In 2007, Nike even featured the young Californian in a TV commercial.Despite her experience, Sementelli, now 16, had a hard time finding a high school that would allow her to try out for the boys‘ baseball team. Two parochial schools (教会学校) near her family‘s home in North Hollywood said no, and several public schools were lukewarm (冷淡的) to the idea. Finally, she found Burbank High School, where she‘s now a sophomore and a member of the JV baseball team.Sementelli‘s story is not unique. Across the country, girls devoted to baseball--and with as many seasons of youth ball under their belts as their male teammates--are finding it isn‘t easy to stay in the sport when they reach high school.Biology does play a role in the situation: Boys, especially older ones, often have an edge over girls in size and strength, allowing them to throw harder and swing with greater force. But girls say that the toughest battles are not about capabilities, but against the traditional attitude that baseball is for boys.―Most people just are incapable of seeing beyond what‘s easy,‖ says Jennifer Ring, t he author of Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don‘t Play Baseball, and a professor at the University of Nevada-Reno. ―It is much neater if we say boys play baseball and girls play other sports.‖In at least one state, Massachusetts, girls are barred from trying out for boys‘ baseball in high schools that also offer softball. Nebraska dropped its ban last year, and in January, Indiana removed its ban after being sued (控告) by the parents of Logan Young, a 15-year-old aspiring catcher and freshman at Bloomington South High School.81. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweetmeats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them. And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meeseHow can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise manand a wise guy are opposites How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the nextEnglish was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible; but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I ____ this essay, I end it. 1.According to the passage __________.A.pineapples are the apples on the pine treeB.there should be an egg in an eggplantC.sweetmeats and sweetbreads are different thingsD.boxing rings should be round2.The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph m aybe means “__________”.A.blow B.finish C.get hurt D.roll up3.Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ____________.A.lazy B.crazy C.clever D.dullIt should be one of the main goals in today society to reduce plastic consumption. Though many believe recycling will solve the problem, and continue using plastic, it’s actually the opposite. In 2013, 254 million tons of trash was produced in the U.S. alone, and only around 30% wasrecycled. This means the rest ended up in a landfill and will stay there for up to 1000 years.Recently, China has stopped importing trash from all over the world. Before this, over 30% of the world’s waste would end up in China, causing a popular belief that Asian countries are those responsible for creating the majority of the waste in the world. Now, Asian countries, including Vietnam and Thailand, are looking for new ideas to avoid plastic. One of those ideas was a new, eco-friendly way to pack their goods by avoiding plastic packaging. One of Perfect Homes Chiangmai’s team members noticed a creative way to reduce plastic that a supermarket called Rimping Supermarket was using and decided to take photos of their shelves with his phone. Little did he know that people all around the world would absolutely love this idea. “I just popped in to get a few items while we were waiting to sign some contracts (合同) with our lawyer, who was delayed. When I noticed the vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and simply liked the idea, I took a few pictures and posted them online.” he said. With more than 3.5 million views and over 17 thousand shares, the idea became something people can encourage more supermarkets to implement (贯彻).Some have noticed that not everything on the shelves is completely plastic-free, to which the supermarket responded that they are takingone step at a time, but it’s not that easy. Many products come to the supermarkets pre-packaged and many companies are interested in wrapping their produce in plastic since it is the cheapest and the easiest option. It’s now up to the shoppers to show the supermarket which they prefer. If everyone opts for the banana leaf packaging, they will probably stop stocking the items in plastic.4.What does the underlined phrase “opts for” in the last paragraph probably meanA.Doubts. B.Discusses. C.Dislikes. D.Chooses.5.What is the best title of the passageA.Leaf Packaging Goes Viral (走红)B.Reducing Plastic ConsumptionC.Recycling Avoids Plastic PackagingD.A Good Option Makes A DifferenceSatellite, hunger, stars, kerosene lamps(煤油灯), the Milky Way, the Cultural Revolution’s factional civil wars, a light-year, the flood… these seemingly unconnected things combined together and formed the early part of my life, which shaped the science fiction I write today. As a science fiction writer who began as a fan, I do not use my fiction as a way to criticize the reality of the present. I feel that the greatest appeal of science fiction is the creation of numerous imaginary worlds outsideof reality. I’ve always felt that the greatest and most beautiful stories were told by science. They are far more magnificent, grand, involved, profound, thrilling, strange, terrifying, mysterious, and even emotional. Only, these wonderful stories are locked in cold equations(方程式) that most do not know how to read. There’s a strange contradiction: On Earth, mankind can step onto another continent, and destroy the civilizations through war and disease. But when they look at the stars, they turn emotional and believe that if aliens exist, they must be friendly and kind.I think it should be the opposite: Let’s turn the kindness we show toward the stars to mankind and build up trust and understanding between different peoples and civilizations. But for the universe outside the solar system, we should be cautious. For a fragile civilization like ours, this is the most responsible path.As a fan of science fiction, a considerable part of the science fiction I’ve read comes from America. The fact that American readers can now enjoy my book makes me both pleased and excited. Science fiction describes event of interest to all of humanity. It often describes a day when humanity will form a harmonious whole and I believe the arrival of such a day need not wait for the appearance of aliens.Except from “Author’s Postscript for the American Edition of TheThree-Body Problem”6.What shaped the author’s present worksA.His early life experiences. B.Negative.C.Uncertain. D.Indifferent.9.What is the text mainly aboutA.The author’s achievements in science fiction.B.Themes and points of view of the author’s works.C.People’s knowledge and misundersta nding about the universe. AMicro-Enterprise Credit for Street YouthIntroductionAlthough small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. BackgroundTypically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime.Street Business PartnershipsS.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income.● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages.● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons LearnedThe following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.● It’s important for all loans to be linked to training programs that includethe development of basic business and life skills.● Small loans are provided initially for purchasing fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shining kits.● All S.K.I. programs have charged interest on the loans, primarily to get the business runners used to the concept of paying interest on borrowing money. Generally the rates have been modest.ConclusionThere is a need to recognize the importance of access to credit for poor young people seeking to fulfill economic needs.1. The organization, S.K.I., aims to _________________.A. give business training and loans to street childrenB. provide schools and social support for street childrenC. share the lessons S.K.I. learned to help street childrenD. draw the attention of the government to street children2. This passage implies that with the help of S. K. I. street children may ______________.A. reject paid employmentB. set up their own businessC. leave their familiesD. employ other children3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. The link of all loans to training programs is important.B. Interest is charged for the loans in all S.K.I. programs.C. The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service provides the participants with free bicycles.D. The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia works with another organization.BMy father’s family is not a musical family. They are a family of words. My brother has my father’s dark hair, his love of a good argument. I take after my mother. From her I inherited a curious nature, a sense of adventure, bright red hair. I did not, contrary to her hopes, inherit a talent for the piano. That fact was established beyond doubt after unsuccessful attempts to draw music from me.The piano lessons began when I was four. My mother was convinced that I would be a child Mozart. She found the ideal teacher--Madame Oblenka, a strict Russian woman, whose pursed lips were enough to frighten a wild horse into submission. Madame Oblenka, who expected a little Mozart, was not very delighted to find a little girl banging her fists on the keys.I tried to please her. “Feel the music,” she urged. I “felt” it and winced (退避) my ear--for what is more unpleasant than a series of wrong notes played continuously? She “felt” my music, too, which is why she always left with an angrier expression than when she came.Once, when I was ten, I managed to record one of my own rehearsals (练习). In order to escape my practice sessions, I would close myself behind the door of the piano room, put on the tape recording, and read until the tape had finished. That method worked for a week, until my mother began to wonder why I always missed the same B-sharp. She knocked on the door, and, receiving no answer, came in to check on me and found that I had fallen asleep while the tape of my performance played on and on.I was twelve when my parents finally acknowledged that my hidden talent was not about to emerge any time soon. My mother, refusing to admit defeat, told me to pick another instrument. “Choose anything you want, Honey,” she said, assuming that freedom of choice would inspire devotion. I thought long and hard and chose the drums. My parents, sensitive to noise, would be less than overjoyed by a daily bombardment of playing. I imagined my father in his study, cotton wads in his ears.I worked my way through several other instruments before my mother hit on another idea. Maybe I wasn’t meant to be an instrumentalist. Realizing that drama might be more suited to my talents, Mom took me to a drama teacher. However, he put me backstage, painting scenery. Once I recovered from my sense of injury, I realized the wisdom of his choice. I loved the active, practical backstage world, and I discovered that I had a knack for constructing and painting. I loved the challenge of taking our scanty (贫乏) supplies and using them to make somethingbeautiful. Imagining a scene and then seeing it emerge before me--this, to me, was close to magic.I’m a sculptor now, and every day I experience afresh the joy of being fully absorbed in the act of a rtistic creation. It’s a wonderful, blissful (乐而忘忧) feeling. I realize that my parents, in their misguided attempts to interest me in music, were trying to give me this feeling. And now I feel grateful. Perhaps they went about it in the wrong way, but their hearts were in the right place.4. The underlined word “emerge” in the fifth paragraph can be replaced by _____.A. disappearB. failC. turnD. show5. Which of the following best reveals the author’s attitude towards pianopractice?A. She tried to make the piano teacher pleased.B. She repeated the same mistake in practicing.C. She played the recording instead of practicing.D. She recorded her performance for improvement.6. The author’s mother can be best described a s __________.A. devoted and stubbornB. encouraging and independentC. helpful and considerateD. hardworking and generous7. We can learn from the passage __________.A. art should be treated as a joy rather than a burdenB. the ordinary backstage work can help one succeedC. you can only get better at something if you practiceD. parents should encourage their children to create artCTwo of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my chil dren were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I coulddo to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.8. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.9. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ______.A. keep her appointment with the eye doctorB. meet her father who was already an old manC. join in the holiday celebration of the companyD. finish her work before the deadline approached10. T he underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to___________.A. abandonedB. lackedC. avoidedD. wasted11.W hat is the best title for the passage?A. The Emotional Well-beingB. The Two Saddest WordsC. The Most Useful RuleD. The Peace of MindDAs rules, laws are people’s rights and responsibilities toward society. Laws are agreed on by society and made official by governments. Some persons look on laws with fear, hatred, or annoyance. Laws seem to limit people’s freedom to do many things they would like to do. Though laws may prevent us from doing things we wish to do at the moment, laws make everyone’s life safer and more pleasant. Without laws we could not hold on to our property; we could not go to bed at night expecting to wake up in the morning and find that we had not been robbed; no stores in which we buy food, clothes, and other necessities could stay open and sell to us. Our banks would not be safe places to keep our money.Social life would be impossible without laws to control the way people treat one another. It is not the laws that should be feared but the trouble that comes to everyone when laws are broken. Once this is understood, a citizen will not fear or hate the law. Understanding the need for good laws and the evil results of breaking laws is the first requirement of good citizenship and government.Philosophers once believed that in prehistoric time people lived without laws in a “state of nature”. People were free to do as they pleased unless someone stronger stopped them by force. As a result, life became so dangerous and unsafe that leaders had to create laws to protect life and property. This is no longer believed to be true. Scholars now think that as soon as people began living in small groups, they worked out rules for getting along with one another. In time everyone accepted and supported the rules. Manners, customs and beliefs controlled the living habits and behavior of the group. Such rulesand habits of life are called folkways.Folkways are probably the real meaning of human laws, as well as of religion, morals, and education. As life became more complex, folkways became more complete guides to living. After thousands of years, some of the important folkways were put into writing as the earlier laws. And as life grew more and more complicated with faster transportation and the rise of modern industry and big cities, more human acts and interests had to be ruled by law. This led to a great increase in the number of laws. But we know that unless laws are enforced, they cannot protect us. Poorly enforced laws invite crime and violence. So we agree that the best protection against crime is planned social change and law reform -- to reduce the causes of crime and to encourage people to obey the laws. Such a solution would join a sound system of law enforcement with forces working to prevent crime. To attain this goal, all citizens must understand the need for good laws and for their enforcement.12. Some persons look on laws with fear, hatred, or annoyance, because_____.A. they can’t do whatever they want toB. they feel it unnecessary to have lawsC. laws only protect those who worked out themD. laws and rules are too complicated to understand13. Which of the following statement is NOT TRUE?A. Without laws we may fail to hold on to our propertyB. In prehistoric time people lived happily without laws in a “state of nature”.C. Human laws, as well as of religion, morals, and education, are believedto originate from Folkways.D. Good citizens and government should be aware of the need for good laws andthe evil results of breaking laws14. A sound system of law enforcement is necessary because_____.A. some citizens fear or hate the law.B. poorly enforced laws cause crime and violence.C. we need someone stronger to stop crime by force.D. the evil results of breaking laws are getting fewer and fewer .15. What’s the best title of this passage?A. The Origin of LawsB. Enforcement of LawsC. Leaders and LawsD. Laws and rules.第二节、七选五(共5小题)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
