He had emptied his hiding place und er the loose fl oorboard of all food, d oubl e-checked every nook and cranny of his bedroom for forgotten spellbooks or quills, and taken d own the chart on the wall counting the days d own to September the first, on which he liked to cross off the days remaining until his return to Hogwarts.
1.A hen has to lay eggs, a cow has to give milk, and a canary has to sing. But a dog makes his living by giving you nothing but love.E.g., When I was five, my father bought a little yellow-haired pup for fifty cents. He was the light and joy of my childhood. Every afternoon about four-thirty, he would sit in the front yard with his beautiful eyes staring steadfastly at the path, and as soon as he heard my voice or saw me swinging my dinner pail through the buck brush, he was off like a shot, racing breathlessly up the hill to greet me with leaps of joy and barks of sheer ecstasy.2. You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. But I know and you know people who blunder through life trying to wigwag other people into becoming interested in them.3. If we merely try to impress people and get people interested in us, we will never have many true, sincere friends. Friends, real friends, are not made that way.4. It is the individual who is not interested in his fellow men who has the greatest difficulties in life and provides the greatest injury to others. It is from among such individuals that all human failures spring.E.g., The editor could pick up any one of the dozens of stories that drifted across his desk every day and after reading a few paragraphy he could feel whether or not the author liked people. The same things you preacher would tell you, but remember, you have to be interested in people if you want to be a successful writer of stories. If it is true of writing fiction, you can be sure it is true of dealing with people face-to-face.5. It is the individual who is not interested in his fellow men who has the greatest difficulties in life and provides the greatest injury to others. It is from amongsuch individuals that all human failures spring.E.g., He told me that every time he went on stage he said to himself:"I am grateful because these people come to see me, they make it possible for me to make my living in a very agreeable way. I'm going to give them the very best I possibly can."6. Having a sustained interest in other people let George Dyke create a new life for himself at a time when most people consider their productive years over and it also was one of the secrets of Theodore Roosevelt’s astonishing popularity.E.g., George became know to the country music fans in the eastern part of the United States as “Uncle George. Theodore Roosevelt told James E. Amos’ wife the bobwhite enthusiastically and treated his subordinates sincerely.7.I never forgot that to be genuinely interested in other people is a mostimportant quality for a sales-person to possess - for any person for that matter.E.g., Alice brought a piece to him on a plate, and he went over to the office eating it as he went and greeting gardeners and laborers as he passed...Whenever I went into this store I would always talk to the soda clerk and sales clerk for a few minutes before talking to the owner to obtain his order.8. One can win the attention and time and cooperation of even the most sought-after people by becoming genuinely interest in them.E.g., Years ago I conducted a course in fiction writing at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. In order to invite some distinguished and busy authors to come to Brooklyn and give us the benefit of their experiences,we wrote them. Each of these letters was signed by about a hundred and fifty students. And we enclosed a list of questions for them to answer about themselves and theirmethods of work. They liked that. By using this method, many prominent men to come to talk to the students of my courses in public speaking.9.If we want to make friends, let's put ourselves out to do things for other people---things that require time, energy, unselfishness and thoughtfulness.E.g., When the Duke of Windsor was Prince of Wales, he was scheduled to tour South America, and before he started out on that tour he spent months studying Spanish so that he could make public talks in the language of the country; and the South Americans love him for it.10. If we want to make friends, let’s greet people with animation and enthusiasm. E.g., Many companies train their telephone operators to greet all callers in a tone of voice that radiates interest and enthusiasm. The caller feels the company is concerned about them. Let’s remember that when we answer the telephone tomorrow.11. Showing a genuine interest in others not only wins friends for you, but may develop in its customers a loyalty to your company.E.g., In an issue of the publication of the National Bank of North America of New York was published a letter from Madeline Rosedale, a depositor, in which Madeline expressed his appreciation of the bank’s staff because of the staff’s enthusiasm and greeting.Charles R. Walters, of one of the large bank in New York City ,was assigned to prepare a confidential report on a certain corporation. He succeeded in getting every bit of information he wanted by giving the president stamps which the president’s son want to get and talking about stamps and the president’s son.C. M. Knaphle, Jr., of Philadelphia had tried for years to sell fuel to a large chain–store organization. He succeeded in getting an order by talking about the advantages of the spread of the chain stores withan executive of the large chain–store organization.12. For a long time ago, a hundred years before Christ was born a famous old Roman poet, Publilius Syrus, remarked;”We are interested in others when they are interested in us.”13. A show of interest, as with every other principle of human relations, must be sincere. It must pay off not only for the person showing the interest, but for the person receiving the attention. It is a two-way street-both parties benefit.E.g., Martin Ginsberg, who took our Course in Long Island New York, reported how the special interest a nurse took in him profoundly affected his life. It was Thanksgiving Day and he was ten years old. He was in a welfare ward of a city hospital and was scheduled to undergo major orthopedic surgery the next day. As the day went on, he became overwhelmed with the feeling of loneliness, despair and fear.A young student nurse heard his sobbing and came over to him. She talked to him and tried to calm his fears. Even though she was scheduled to go off duty at 4 P.M., she stayed on her own time until almost 11 P.M., She played games with him, talked to him and stayed with him until he finally fell asleep. He said, ”Many thanksgivings have come and gone since I was ten, but one never passes without me remembering that particular one and my feelings of frustration, fear, loneliness and the warmth and tenderness of the stranger that somehow made it all bearable.”14. If you want to others to like you, if you want to develop real friendships, if you want to help others at the same time as you help yourself, keep this principle in mind:Become genuinely interested in other people.。

Theodore Roosevelt 西奥多罗斯福The Strenuous Life 勤奋生活论April 10, 1899 1899年4月10日Chicago 芝加哥Gentlemen:In speaking to you, men of the greatest city of the West, men of the State which gave to the country Lincoln and Grant, men who preeminently and distinctly embody all that is most American in the American character, I wish to preach not the doctrine of ignoble ease but the doctrine of the strenuous life; the life of toil and effort; of lavor and strife, to preach that highest form of success which comes not to the man who desires mere easy peace but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph.A life of slothful ease, a life of that peace wich springs merely from lack either of desire or of power to strive after great things, is as little worthy of a nation as of an individual. We do not admire theman of timid peace. We admire the man who embodies victorious efforts, the man who never wrongs his neighbor, who is prompt to help a friend, but who has those virile qualities necessary to win in the stern strife of actual life. It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed. In this life we get nothing save by effort. Freedon from effort in the present merely means that there has been effort stored up in the past. A man can be freed from the necessity of workonly by the fact that he or his fathers before him have worked to good purpose. If the freedon thus purchased is used aright, and th man sill does actual work, though of a different kind, whether as a writer or a general, wheether in the field of politics or in the field of exploration and adventure, he shows he deserves his good fortune. But if he treats this period of freedon from the need of actual labor as a period, not of preparation, but of mere enjoyment, even though prehaps not of vicious enjoyment, he shows that he is simply a cumberer on the earth’s surface; and he surely unfits himself to hold his owen place with his fellows, if the need to do so should again arise. A mere life of ease is not in the end a very statisfactory life, and , above all, it is a life which ultimately unfits those who follow it for serious work in the word.As it is with the individual so it is with the nation. It is a base untruth to say that happy is the nation that has no history. Thrice happy is the nation that has a glorious history. Far vetter it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows nither victory nor defeat. If in 1861 the men who loved the Union had believed thathpeace was the end of all things and war and strife a worst of all things, and had acted up to their belief, we would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives, we would have saved hundred of millions of dollars. Moreover, besides saving all the blood and treasure we then lavished, we would have prevented the heratbreak of many women, the dissolution of many homes; and we would have spared the country those months of gloom and shame when it seemed as if our armies marched only to defeat. We would have avoided all this suffering simply by shrinking from strife. And if we had thusavoided it we would have shown that we were weaklings and that we were unfit to stand among the great nations of the erath. Thank God for the iron in the blood of our fathers, the men who upheld the wisdom of Linclon and bore sword or rifle in the armies of Grant! Let us, the children of the men who proved themselves equal to the mighty days —let us, the children of the men of who carried the great Civil War to a triumphant conclusion, praise the God of our fathers that the ignoble counsels of peace were rejected, that the suffering and loss, the blackness of sorrow and despair, were unflinchingly faced and the years of strife endured; for in the end the slave was freed, the Union restored, and the mighty American Republic placed once more as a helmeted queen among nations. The timid man, the lazy man, the man who distrusts his country, the overcivilized man, who has lost the great fighting, masterful virtues, the ignorant man and the man of dull mind, whose soul is incapable of feeling the mighty lift tht thrills “stern men with empires in their brains”—all these, of course, shrink from seeing the nation undertake its new duties; shrink from seeing us build a navy and army adequate to our need; shrink from seeing us do our share of the world’s work by bringing order out of chaos in the great, fair tropic islands from which the valor of our soldiers and sailors has driven the Spanish flag. These are the men who fear the strenuous life, who fear the only national life which is really worth leading. They believe in that cloistered life which saps the hardy virtues in a nation, as it saps them in the individual; or else they are wedded to that vase spirit of gain an dgreed which recognizes in commercialism the be-all and end-all of national life, instead of realizing that, though an indispensable element, it is after all but one of the many elements that go to make up true national greatness. No country can long endure if its foundations are not laid deep in the material prosperity which comes from hard unsparing effort in the fields of industrial activity; but netiher was any nation ever yet truly great if it relied upon material prosperity alone. All honor must be paid to the arcitects of our material prosperity; to the great captains of industry who have built our factories and our railroads; to the strong men who toil for wealth with brain or hand; for great is the debt of the nation to these and their kind. But our debt is yet greater to the men whose highest type is to be found in a statesman like Lincoln, a soldier like Grant. They showed by their lives that they recognized the law of work, the law of strife; they toiled to win a competency for themselves and those depedent upon them; but they recognized that there were yet other and even loftier duties —duties to the nation and duties to the race.I preach to you, then, my countrymen, that our country calls not for the life of ease, but for the life of strenuous endeavor. The twentieth century looms vefore us big with the fate of many nations. If we stand idly by, if we seek merely swollen, slothful ease, and ignoble peace, if we shrink from the hard contests where men must win at hazard of their lives and at the risk of all they hold dear, then the bolder and stronger peoples will pass us by and will win for themselves the domination of the world. Let us therefore boldly face the life of strife, resolute to do our duty ell and manfully; resolute to uphold reghteousness by deed and by word; resolute to be both honest and brave, to serve high ideals, yet to use practical methods. Above all, let us shrink fromno strife, moral or physical, within or without the nation, provided we are certain that the strife is justified; for it is only through strife, through hard and dangerous endeavor, that we shall ultimately win the goal of true national greatness.。

Theodore Roosevelt tooka robust approach to life, which can be summarized as“do what you can with whatyou have, where you are.”Inother words, when you areseeking success, use everyavailable resource.Theodore Roosevelt hadno time for quitters or whiners. He would never accept that something was impossible. Every task, every goal, and every dream can be completed. All you needed to do is to make a start. Use what you have around you to take your first step.Do not make excuses for not doing something. Instead, give all the reasons for setting out to complete the task. There is always an alternative way of approaching a project. Giving up is not one of those alternatives.Neither quitters nor whiners achieve success. They continuously find ways of doing anything. When you are chasing success, don’t give yourself excuses. Instead, challenge yourself.Making the best of what you are given is life-affirming. Achieving success through working to find different ways of doing a task or overcoming an obstacle will make you feel good. Your self-belief and confidence will soar, and you will feel able to tackle whatever else comes along.Theodore Roosevelt was a great advocate of self-discipline. He believed that if we could not control our own lives, how could we lead others? When you impose self-discipline on yourself, you remove indecision and replace it with purposefulness. You become an example to others, which adds to your self-esteem.Imposing self-discipline can involve a measure of sacrifice. Taking a morning run is good for your health, but lazing in bed is a tempting alternative. Self-discipline makes you stick to your plan to exercise every morning.
史蒂文·沃茨(Steven Watts)在其2005年出版的传记作品《人民的大亨:亨利·福特和美国世纪》(The People's Tycoon: Henry Ford and the Amercian Century)中提到,他俩引起了轰动。
