Oxford Open Days
Open day dates in 2020
The next University-wide open days for undergraduates will be held on 28 June, 29 June and 15 September 2020. Students and parents are invited to spend a whole day in Oxford, attending events, talking to staff and students and getting answers to any questions which remain after examining prospectuses (简章)and websites.
To book or not to book
Unlike many other university open days, it is not compulsory to book to attend an Oxford open day. Many events are offered on a drop-in basis.
What to expect on the day
Many departments run their main open day events in the morning so you may choose to start with a visit to your subject department. Here you may attend a talk or sample lecture and chat to tutors and students.
Over lunchtime and in the afternoon, colleges offer a range of events, tours and opportunities to meet students and tutors. This is a great time to visit those colleges on your shortlist.
Getting around
There is no central campus at Oxford University, so events will happen at colleges, departments, museums and libraries all around the city. Most visitors manage this easily on foot, as all open day venues(会场) are within 15 minutes walking distance from the city centre, but it is important that you plan your day in advance taking travel time into account. Many events will be very busy and latecomers will not always be able to join. Please do not try to drive between venues - there is no parking available and traffic on open days is typically extremely heavy.
Disabled visitors
Anyone with a mobility impairment may borrow a free wheelchair to travel around Oxford city centre via Oxford Shop mobility. To book your wheelchair, call +44 (0) 1865 248737 at least one day in advance.

One day I decided to quit my job, my relationship…I wanted to quit my life. I went to the woods to have one last talk with my grandfather.
“Grandfather,”I said, “Can you give me one good reason not to quit?
“Look around fern (蕨类植物) and the bamboo. When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took good care of them.
I gave them light and water. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.
In the second year the fern grew more plentiful. Nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on it.
In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. The same was in year four.
Then in the fifth year, a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared with the fern, it was seemingly small and insignificant. But just six months later, the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle.
Did you know you have actually been growing roots? I would
not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you. Don’t compare yourself to others. Yet they both make the forest beautiful. You will rise high.”my grandfather said.
“How high should I rise?” I asked.
“How high will the bamboo rise?” he asked in return.
“As high as it can?” I questioned.
“Yes,” he said, “Give me glory by rising as high as you can.”
I left the forest, realizing that good days give you happiness; bad days give you experiences; both are essential to life. Never regret a day in your life.

Everyone was afraid of the Red Death--- everyone except the fearless
Prince Prospero. He refused to be troubled by it. Although half the people of his country had already died from this terrible disease, he continued to enjoyed life to the full. One day he decided to invite a thousand of his strong and brave friends to stay with him in one of his castles, far out in the countryside. There the Red Death would not be able to reach them.
Prince Prospero’s ball (舞会), although given in these strange rooms, was wild and happy. The Prince had planned everything---- the colors, the paintings on the walls, even the cloaks (斗篷) and masks. He had chos en all the clothes with the greatest care, putting together the beautiful and ugly, the strange and fantastic (奇异的), the surprising and frightening.
All men and women were dressed like a terrible dream. And in and out of the rooms these dreams walked and danced, their clothes changing color each time they entered a different room. But no one was brave enough to enter the black room. As the night passed and the fires burned brighter, the colors and shapes in this room became more horrible than ever. The black carpet and walls seems full of gloom (忧伤), and the deep chimes (报时) of the black clock sounded even more frightening.
But the other six rooms were full of life and pleasure. People were dancing and singing, talking and laughing, and the wild noise of a thousand happy men and women rang through the castle. Then came the hour of midnight, and once again dancers and musicians became still and silent, as the clock slowly rang the twelve long chimes of midnight. And because the twelve chimes took a long tim e to ring, each person had more time to think, and feel uncomfortable. They also had time before the last chime had sounded, to notice a masked person, who had not been there before. The first person who saw the stranger told the
next person, who told another and in a few minutes a cry of fear and horror rose up from the crowd (人群).
Now you will remember that everyone at the ball was wearing strange cloaks and masks, which belonged (属于) more to the world of dream and wild imagination than to ever yday life. So why, you may ask, this horror, and this fear? But even in the cruelest heart, there are some fears too terrible to laugh at. The tall thin figure of the stranger was dressed from head to foot in the white clothes of the dead. And the mask over the face was frighteningly real---- it was the face of a dead man. Worse still, the face and the body were covered with red, horrible blood! Here, in the middle of all that dancing and happiness was a living picture of the Red Death!
When Prince Prospero saw the masked stranger, his face became white with fear. Then his fear turned into anger and he shouted out, “ Who’s that? Who is mad enough to play games with us, and with death, in this way? Take hold of him, and pull off his mask. I want to see the face of the man who, tomorrow, will hang from the castle roof.”
31. Why did Prince Prospero decide to have a party?
A. Because half the people of his country had been killed.
B. Because he wanted to show he was not afraid of the Red Death.
C. Because his castle was so far out that the Red Death was unable to get them.
D. Because he preferred an enjoyable life no matter what happened.
32. Why were the people at the party described as “a terrible dream”?
A. Because they walked and danced in a terrible way.
B. Because what Prince Prospero chose was strange.
C. Because their clothes were always changing colors.
D. Because they didn’t want to wake up.
33. According to the passage, what would happen every midnight?
A. The Red Death appeared in the middle of the castle and frightened
everyone.
B. People became quiet and still, waiting for the chimes to end.
C. People told each other about the Red Death.
D. A cry of fear and horror rose up from the crowd.
34. Why did the stranger look so horrible to the others?
A. Because this person was wearing cloaks and masks.
B. Because this person hadn’t been in the castle before.
C. Because this person was dressed in white.
D. Because this person was covered with blood.
35. It can be inferred from the passage that _______________.
A. All the seven rooms were filled with happiness and pleasure.
B. The Red Death was in the castle from the beginning to the end.
C. Prince Prospero was in fact afraid of the Red Death.
D. Someone played a joke with Prince Prospero.

There are activities you do each day like brushing teeth, taking a shower, having a coffee, eating… or happens to you each day like the phone rings, a commercial comes on TV, etc. 37 The key is to pick which routine suits you best for being the rig ht trigger for your new habit.

So if you were to do push-ups after your morning coffee, start with just two. ___39__ After doing 2 push-ups becomes too easy, continue with four, etc. It is easier to complete the behaviour with everyday small actions, especially on days when motivation lacks.
Celebrate every small progress.
Reward yourself after each small improvement you achieve.
40 Tiny little things like a positive self-talk or a smile in the mirror can serve you as well, because as scientific research has shown, your brain is actually very bad at distinguishing between feeling awesome after doing a huge thing and feeling awesome after doing a tiny thing.
Therefore, celebrating every achievement would overwhelm you with good feelings, help you to gain confidence and makes
habits easier to follow.
