Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. But it also presents a danger to the world in two important ways. First, the making of paper requires the loss of many millions of trees each year. And worldwide use of paper is expected to double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the planet cannot stand such a high rate of forest loss. The second great problem with paper is what happens once it is no longer useful. A large amount of wastepaper ends up in landfills, where it can produce harmful gases and finally contribute to global climate change.
One simple solution can greatly reduce both of these problems: paper recycling. Instead of cutting down trees, recycle existing paper to feed the paper-making process.
Paper is mainly made from cellulose (纤维素),which can be used repeatedly in papermaking. Unfortunately, it also means that paper waste takes a surprisingly long time to break down in landfills. So far, trees are the only source(来源) of cellulose that can fill the great demand for paper products. Therefore, recycling paper is simply one of the best ways to save trees. Thanks to advances in processing, recycled paper need not be the dark-color1 edstuff many of us are familiar with. It now can offer the same print performance as non-recycled paper.
Effective recycling requires a continuous effort from everyone at all levels of society. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling systems can be developed.
The need is real. The massive loss of trees affects everybody on earth. Everyone should do their part to recycle paper and encourage government and industry to do the same. The world will be a better place for it!
4. What can we infer from the text?
A. The use of recycled paper will double in 40 years.
B. Recycling paper helps relieve global climate change.
C. Wastepaper can easily break down in landfills.
D. There are not enough landfills for wastepaper.
5. What makes recycled paper more acceptable?
A. The great demand of trees.
B. The low processing cost.
C. Its dark-color1 ed feature.
D. Its improved print performance.
6. What does the author propose?
A. Punishing the act of cutting trees.
B. Recycling paper.
C. Improving recycling system.
D. Promoting paper industry.
7. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By analyzing causes and effects.
B. By offering research plans and data.
C. By discussing problems and solutions.
D. By comparing strengths and weaknesses.

Children's average daily time spent watching television or using mobile device increased from 53 minutes at age 12 months to more than 150 minutes at 3 years, according toan analysis by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). By age 8, children were more likely to log the highest amount of screen time if they had been in home-based children or were born to first-time mothers.
“Our results indicate that screen habits begin early, ”said Edwina Yeung, an investigator in National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).“This finding suggests that interventions(干涉) to reduce screen time could have a better chance of success if introduced early.”
In the research, mothers of 4, 000 children responded to questions on their kids' media habits when they were 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months of age.
TheAmericanAcademyof Pediatrics recommends avoiding digital media exposure for children under 18 months of age, introducing children 18 to 24 months of age to screen media slowly, and limiting screen time to an hour a day for children from 2 to 5 years of age. In the current study, researchers found that 87% of the children had screen time exceeding (超过) these recommendations. However, while screen time increased throughout toddlerhood, by age 7 and 8, screen time fell to under 1.5 hours per day. The researchers believe this decrease relates to time consumed by school-related activities.
The study authors classified the children into two groups based on how much their average daily screen time increased from age 1 to age 3. The first group, 73% of the total had the lowest increase, from an average of nearly 51 minutes a day to nearly an hour and 47 minutes a day. The second group, 27% of the total, had the highest
increase, from nearly 37 minutes of screen time a day to about 4 hours a day. Higher levels of parental education were associated with lower odds of inclusion in the second group.
8. Who use mobile device longest according to the NIH's analysis?
A. 10-year-old born to first-time mothers.
B. 3-year-old children in low income families.
C. 8-year-old children in home-based childcare.
D. 1-year-old children with parents poorly educated.
9. What does the research suggest according to Edwina?
A. Parents should stop their children using media.
B. Parents should limit the use of digital media themselves.
C. Parents should reduce their children's screen time earlier.
D. Parents should avoid their children using digital media at infancy (婴儿期).
10. Why does children's screen time fall when they age 7 and 8?
A. They are studying at school.
B. They can control themselves.
C. They are tired of using them.
D. They are forbidden to use them.
11. Which of the following may be the best title?
A. Keep Away from Media
B. Screen Habits Begin Early
C. Urgency of Parental Education
D. Harm of Home-based Childcare
D
As every mobile-phone owner knows, after a year or so the battery starts to fade and the beast needs recharging more frequently. That is troublesome, but a phone’s batteries can be replaced fairly cheaply — or the whole device traded in for the latest model. An electric car, though, is a much bigger investment. And batteries are its priciest component, representing around 30% of an average mid-size vehicle.
To provide buyers with some peace of mind, carmakers guarantee their batteries, typically for eight years or around 200,000km. Producers, planning to go much further than that, though, are racing to launch “million mile”
(1.6m kilometers) batteries. Contemporary Amperex Technology, a giant Chinese firm which produces batteries for
a number of carmakers, was said to be ready to start producing batteries which would last for 16 years or 2m kilometres. Elon Musk has suggested that Tesla,a Californian maker of electric vehicles, has a million-mile battery in the works. And over in Detroit,General Motors is in the final stages of developing an advanced battery which it says has similar longevity (寿命)。
Regular fast-charging reduces battery life, as do overcharging and deep discharging. Driving in extremely hot or cold weather does not help either. And battery life will diminish even if you just leave the car in the garage. The real point of a million-mile battery is that the technological advances required to make it possible will deal with these things as well.
Battery technology is improving all the time, and by no means are million-mile batteries the limit of engineers’ ambition. The next objective is to replace Li-ions’ liquid electrolytes (电解质) with solid ones. That would allow even longer driving ranges, which could make a two-million-mile battery an achievable objective. If that day comes, the tables would have been turned. From being the first part of a car to fail, its battery will have become the last.
12. The battery problem of mobile phones is mentioned to_____.
A. show electrical devices may have drawbacks
B. stress the disturbing battery problem of cars
C. call for investment in battery development
D. compare the function of battery in devices
13. What do we know about the million-mile battery plan?
A. It is eagerly anticipated by car consumers.
B. It is aimed to save repair cost for customers.
C. It targets the longevity of 8 years and above.
D. It has drawn the interest of many enterprises.
14. What does the author think is the focus of developing the million-mile battery?
A. Exploring new materials to construct batteries.
B. Guiding users on how to maintain the battery.
C. Addressing factors that decrease battery life.
D. Researching the principle of battering aging.
15. What does the author think of the future of car batteries?
A. Promising.
B. Unpredictable.
C. Concerning.
D. Unlimited.
