The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.28. Here are some amusing stories about him. When he arrived in New York to be a professor at Princeton University, Einstein felt stressed about visitors and newsmen. So his friends took him off the ship secretly before it docked (靠上码头) and hurried him away by car.Einstein said that only twelve people at that time understood his Theory of Relativity (相对论),although more than nine hundred books had been written to explain it.Mrs. Einstein admitted that even she did not understand the Theory of Relativity; but she understood something far more important for a wife; sheunderstood her husband. She used to invite some friends in for tea and then she would ask her husband to come down stairs and join them.“No!” Einstein would say with anger. He simply couldn’t stand those “interruptions (打扰)”.But Mrs. Einstein persuaded her husband with great patience and had him drink tea with them and take a good rest.Mrs. Einstein said that her husband liked order in his thinking, but he didn’t like it in his life. He did whatever he wanted to.Einstein had only two rules of conduct (行为准则):one was “Don’t be restrained (限制) by any rule”, and the other was “Be independent from the opinions of others”.Einstein led a very simple life. When he went out, he was always in old clothes, and seldom did he wear a hat. He liked to whistle and sing in the bathroom. He shaved with the same soap as he used for his bath. It seems strange that the great scientist trying to solve the mysteries of the universe should consider that using two pieces of soap made life too complicated.Einstein said he was happy because he didn’t want money or titles or foolish praises. He made his own happiness out of such simple things as playing the violin and sailing his boat.Einstein’s violin brought him more joy than anything else in his life. He said he often thought in music and made his day-dreams in music.32.Albert Einstein was taken off the ship secretly by his friends because .A. he dared not see anyoneB. he didn’t want to meet visitors and reportersC. he wanted to save the timeD. he was afraid of being stopped bysomeoneually Einstein would refuse to join some friends, for .A. he couldn’t stand b eing disturbedB. he was ashamed to meet friendsC. he disliked making friendsD. he was angry with his friends34.Why did he shave with the same soap as he used for his bath?A. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday l ives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!29. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.D. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendshipsDEveryone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal l ife or in the general society. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead a better way of doing things. All these, however, remains true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things. However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and ipads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally.A personal visit carries with the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off. With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced withgreater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handcrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.32. According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are willing to _______.A. live a better lifeB. look for better methodsC. change ways of livingD. accept technology and advance steadily33. The author explains “efficiency comes with a price” by _______.A. describing a processB. using examplesC. following time orderD. making classification34. Compared with home-made handicrafts, machine- made products _______.A. lack great accuracyB. lack the personal touchC. are of high valueD. are quite welcome35. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?A. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.B. People review the past with great regret.C. Technology should be introduced in a fixed way.D. Since then, more than a dozen small colleges and schools have done the same. The ban isn’t because the schools don’t want students to have easy access to water. Instead, the goal is to encourage students to bring reusable bottles to save money and, more importantly, to save the environment. Many people believe that producing and using bottled water not only wastes money but also harms the environment. They say that bottled water is unnecessary because public water supplies in the U.S. are among the best in the world. These people believe that water fountains and reusable bottles with easy access to filling stations are a better choice. But the makers of bottled water argue that plastic bottles make up a small part of the nation’s total waste. They say it’s un fair to single out (单独挑出) their product when so many other items are packaged (包装) in plastic containers, and what’s more, water is a healthy choice compared to some sodas and juices that are also sold at school. What do you think: Should sales of bottled water be banned from schools? People with hemophilia do not have the protein. They may bleed longer than other people after an accident or injury. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he / she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.4. After studying works of art made at different times in history, the scientists found _______.A. the art began from 1,500B.C.B. the works of art ended in the 1950sC. most people shown in the works of art are right-handedD. most people shown in the works of art are left-handed5. What is the left hand for most people used to do?A. It’s used to find or hold things.B. It’s used to work with things.C. It’s used to make a person’s eyes work together.D. Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness.C. Today children are not made to use their right hands only.D. Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed.7. Left in poor conditions with no food or water, they have little hope as they live out their days without the mercy they deserve. Some are found and rescued, given the chance to experience how great life and humans can be; others aren't so lucky. To grow as a nation, we must fight for these abused(受虐待的) animals’ rights and seriously punish heartless owners. One of the first steps in protecting animals and creating effective cruelty laws is to know what animal cruelty actually is. There are two categories: passive cruelty and active cruelty. The first involves acts of omission, meaning the abuse happens as a result of ignorance or lack of action. Passive cruelty might seem less serious, but that is not the case; it can lead to terrible pain and suffering, and finally death. Examples include starvation, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and the failure to get medical care. Passive cruelty is sometimes due to the owner's ignorance, so many animal control officers will first try to educate ignorant owners on how to properly care for animals before giving them a citation(传票) or putting them in prison.Active cruelty, on the other hand, is more well-known and disturbing. Sometimes referred to as non-accidental injury, this type of abuse involves purposeful harm on an animal in order to feel more powerful or gain control. Active cruelty against animals should be taken very seriously, since it can be a sign that a person has serious psychological issues and may commit more acts of violence---possibly against humans. It is hard to tell just what drives people to harm innocent animals. Most animal abusers find some sort of achievement or power in torturing a victim that they know can't fight back. While not all animal abusers become serial killers, it is important to take every case seriously. As a nation we need to make it our right to come together and ensure the safety of our beloved pets. As Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”4. What is the first step to do with the passive cruelty abusers?A. To throw them into prison.B. To bring the case to the court.C. To teach them how to treat animals.D. To give them a strong warning.5. We can learn from Para.3 that active cruelty ______.A. is actually a sign of power or controlB. has been taken seriously in the nationC. may lead to serious psychological problemsD. may cause acts of violence against humans6. What is the author’s attitude towards animal cruelty?A. Uncertain.B. Doubtful.C. Concerned.D. Pessimistic.7. The author wrote this passage to ______.A. warn those heartless pet ownersB. tell people the harm of animal crueltyC. explain the reasons why people harm animalsD. call on people to fight for the abused animalsCLife in the Internet age is lonely—or is it? That’s what experts in human interaction are debating after a new Stanford University survey has been published.According to the study, the more time people spend online, the less they can spare for real-life relationships with family and friends. The researchers asked 113 people about the Web’s influence on daily activities. 36%of those people are online for more than five hours a week.” As Internet use becomes more widespread, it will have an increasingly isolating (孤立的) effect on society,” says Robert Kraut, one of the researchers.Scholars and Web lovers criticized the study for stretching its data to make the “isolating” point. While 13%of regular Web users admitted the loss of time with loved ones, 60%reported watching less TV. The survey also shows that E-mail is the most popular online activity. If some of webheads (网虫)spend what was once passive TV time keeping company with friends via E-mails, “that’s a move toward greater connectedness,” says Paul Resnick, a professor at the University of Michigan.Thisisn’t the first claim that the Web should be criticized. A 1998 report monitored 73 Pittsburgh-area families’ Net use for a year. People who used the Internet more “talked less to family members and reported beinglonelier and more depressed.” says Robert Kraut.“It’s true that there have been big declines in social connectedness over the past decades, but those declines began before the Internet was invented,” says Thomas Putnam. As Amitay Etzioni says, the Internet gives us a different kind of social life—not better or worse than before, but just different.8. Who claimed that the Web had negative influence?A. Paul Resnick.B. Robert Kraut.C. Thomas Putnam.D. Amitay Etzioni.9. The underlined word “This” in Para.4 refers to .A. the opinion expressed in Bowling AloneB. the survey made by the University of MichiganC. the conclusion in a report written in 1998D. the study conducted by Stanford University10. The passage mainly discusses .A. how we can make a better use of the InternetB. how declines in social connectedness appearC. whether the Internet causes an isolating effectD. what a different life the Internet brings to usDScientists often compare coral reefs(珊瑚礁) to underwater rainforests, yet unlike the leafy plant base of a forest, corals are animals. The soft creatures are naturally half-transparent and get their brilliant color1 from algae(藻类) living inside them. When corals experience stress from hot temperatures or pollution, theyhaltthe interdependent relationship with algae, typically pushing them out and turning white. Corals are still alive when they are white, but they're at risk and many eventually die, turning dark brown.Scientists around the world are looking for means to protect and maybe increase corals. One common optionis to create more protected areas — essentially national parks in the ocean. Beyond nature preserves, some conservationists are looking to more hands-on methods. One research center in the Florida Keys is exploring a form of natural selection to keep corals remaining. The reef system in the Keys has been hit hard by climate change and pollution, which is especially tough, because corals there help support fisheries worth $ 100 million every year.To keep the wild ecosystem alive, Erinn Muller, the center's director, and her team are harvesting samples of the corals that survived the environmental stress naturally, keeping them to make them reproduce, and then reattaching them to the reef. They have 46,000 corals on plastic frames under the sea. So far, the center has regrown over 70,000 corals from five different species on damaged reefs. In The Bahamas, Ross Cunning, a research biologist at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, focuses on corals with genes that could make them natural candidates for restoration projects. He published a study of two Bahamian reefs, one that survived an extreme 2015 heat wave, and one that didn't. "We think their ability to deal with these higher temperatures is built into their genes," says Cunning. There's evidence of corals evolving more quickly to resist rapidly warming climate. The big question scientists need investigate, adds Gunning, is how much more heat corals can adapt to.12. What does the underlined word "halt" in the first paragraph mean?A. End.B. Develop.C. Strengthen.D. Weaken.13. What do Muller and her team do to save corals?A. Restore the damaged reefs.B. Grow corals by hand underwater.C. Create more protected areas.D. The women were serious about their writing skills, and the articles they had written were solid and useful. They asked me to take part in a radio talk show earlier in the week to publicize the conference-they would be with the host in the studio and I would be on a telephone linking from my apartment inNew York. The appointed evening arrived, and my phone rang, and the host came on and greeted me. He said he had three lovely ladies in the studio with him and he was eager to find out what we all thought of the present state of literature and what advice we had for all his listeners who were members of the literati and had literary ambitions themselves. This hearty introduction dropped like a stone among us, and none of the three lovely ladies said anything, which I thought was the proper response. The silence lengthened, and finally I said, “I think we should stop mentioning the words literature and literary and literati. We're here to talk about the skills of writing.” Iknew that the host had been given information about what kind of writers we were and what we wanted to discuss. But he had no other preparation. "Tell me what insights do you have about the literary experience inAmericatoday?” Silence also greeted this question. He didn’t know what to do with that, and he began to mention the names of authors like Ernest Hemingway and Saul Bellow and William Styron, whom we surely regarded as literary giants. We said those writers didn'thappen to be our models, and we mentioned people like Lewis Thomas and Joan Didion and Gary Wills, whom he hadn't heard of. It started with the Curtiss Autoplane of 1917, an awkward-looking machine with removable wings. It never left the ground. Later machines made it into the skies but failed to take off commercially. Money is now pouring into flying taxis. On March 30th Lilium, a German company that develops them, announced a merger with SPAC, an acquisition company that values it at $3. 3 bn -- a sign that investors think the business will fly. Thanks to better batteries and lightweight materials, some of them are ready to carry passengers. Up to 300 firms are working on short-range battery-powered craft that take off and land vertically. Carmakers, tech companies and others are investing money into the field. The government isoffering a glide pathto certification.America's Federal Aviation Administration is engaged in the process with around 30 firms, says Natasha Santha of LEK, a consulting company.Midway between a cab and a helicopter, flying taxis have distinct advantages over both. Quiet electric motors allow them to operate frequent services. They require only a patch of concrete to land, unlike noisy helicopters, which face severe operating restrictions in most cities. They can fly four or five times faster than a cab can drive and do not get stuck in traffic. Prices can be kept low by ride-sharing. Joby, based inCalifornia, says its five-seater machine will enter commercial service in 2024. The firm calculates the initial cost of around $4 per person per mile may soon fall by 25%. A trip fromManhattanto JFK airport would then cost $30-40 per passenger. The real revolution will come when full autonomy takes out the cost of a pilot. Archer hopes to run such aircraft by 2028. They face fewer obstacles in the air than earth-bound cars do on the road; airliners mostly fly on autopilot as it is. This is just part of what makes her great, though. She is my best friend and can immediately notice when I am unhappy. She helps me solve problems that my friends do not understand. But I think my mother is a wonderful woman and she doesn’t need to change. She teaches me life lessons that no teachers or friends can. She shows me how to accept everyone for what is inside, rather than what is on the outside. You may have realized that all the qualities I admire have nothing to do with what she looks like. Everyone could be the way she is, but most are not.I want everyone to look beyond the surface and see what is inside others. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.28. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk .A. started sleep more easilyB. were more anxiousC. were less activeD. woke up later29.Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?A. Here are so me amusing stories about him. When he arrived in New York to be a professor at Princeton University, Einstein felt stressed about visitors and newsmen. So his friends took him off the ship secretly before it docked (靠上码头) and hurried him away by car.Einstein said that only twelve people at that time understood his Theory of Relativity(相对论),although more than nine hundred books had been written to explain it.Mrs. Einstein admitted that even she did not understand the Theory of Relativity; but she understood something far more important for a wife; she understood her husband. She used to invite some friends in for tea and then she would ask her husband to come downstairs and join them.“No!” Einstein would say with anger. He simply couldn’t stand those “inte rruptions (打扰)”.But Mrs. He made his own happiness out of such simple things as playing the violin and sailing his boat.Einstein’s violin brought him more joy than anythin g else in his life. He said he often thought in music and made his day-dreams in music.32.Albert Einstein was taken off the ship secretly by his friends because .A. he dared not see anyoneB. he didn’t want to meet visitors and reportersC. he wanted to save the timeD. he was afraid of being stopped by someoneually Einstein would refuse to join some friends, for .A. he couldn’t stand being disturbedB. he was ashamed to meet friendsC. he disliked making friendsD. he was angry with his friends34.Why did he shave with the same soap as he used for his bath?A.
