Not only was she good at math and science, but she was also extremely talented in art. She could draw and paint beautifully. When Audrey graduated from university she got two degrees, one in fine arts and one in chemistry. Not too many people do well in two such different areas of study.Just before her high school graduation, Audrey gave me a wonderful gift. It was a watercolor painting of a mother and her baby. A tear fell from the mother’s eye as she looked lovingly at her child. Beneath the painting Audrey had written these words: “The deep love from Mother, throughme, touches another.” What a beautiful gift! I h ad the piece of art framed(给…做框) and hung in my office.Years passed with many moves from one office to another and I lost the painting. Last year, after about eight years of not knowing where it was, I received a phone from a former colleague who said she had something of mine. It was the picture Audrey had painted for me 18 years ealier. When cleaning out a storage room she had discovered my gift.I was struck that the precious gift came back. I knew Audrey very well. When she was four years old Audrey ha d a serious disease. What’s worse, her father left the house. It was her mother who brought her up with much trouble. She survived the disease but was disabled. To any other it is just a painting, but to me it shows how a mother’s love has helped develop a talent and how its power pushes me ahead.51. What made Audrey different from others was that she_______.A. could draw and paint beautifulllyB. was good at math and chemistryC. got two degrees in two different fieldsD. was a student in a key university52. AJust after World War Ⅱthe IOC decided that the Olympic Games would bring nations together again. As London had been selected to host the cancelled 1944 Games, the IOC decided to offer the 1948 Games to London. London accepted the offer and set about preparing the venues (场地) and all the other things that hosting the Olympic Games needed. With less than two years to get the Games ready, it was a great achievement in itself that the Games were ready on time. The budget that was assigned to host the Games was £600 000, quite a small sum in comparison to the Games of today that cost billions of pounds. In 1948, large parts of London lay in ruins. Food and building materials were in short supply. It was decided that the Games would be held with no new venues or athlete villages being built. The participating nations united to make the Games a success. Athletes were housed in barracks (兵营). School dormitories and even private houses were used to accommodate the athletes from visiting nations. At mealtimes, athletes were given increased rations, the same as those received by British workers in the essential industries, like mineworkers, which meant 5 467 calories a day, instead of the normal 2 600 calories a day.The spectators (观众) who came to the Games had to bring their ownfood, as there were no facilities to provide catering at any of the sites. Even getting to the venues was a problem. The famous London Red Buses were used, and military vehicles, many of which were driven by women volunteers, were also used to transport spectators and athletes to the venues.Despite these problems, the Games' opening ceremony was held on 29th July, 1948, at Wembley Stadium. During the opening ceremony a message was shown on the giant scoreboard. It read: “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering but f ighting well.”语篇解读1948年伦敦奥运会是二战后的第一届奥运会,二战后的伦敦百废待兴,在筹办过程中遇到了种种困难,但人们最终克服了这些困难,成功举办了这次奥运会。

aschool often involves parents and the community as wellas elected school leaders.Researchers say school names can show civic values and alsoshape them. For example, naming a school after a historic person becomes a way to teach students about that person’s importance in history.A new study examines the naming of American public schools. The study is from the Manhattan Institute,an organization that does public policy research. The study shows that fewer and fewer schools are being named after people.Instead, more schools are being named after the local area or natural features like hills, trees or animals. The researchers say these changes raise questions about the civic duty of public education. They looked at seven states with twenty percent of all public school students in the country. They found similar results in every state:new schools are less likely to be named after people. This is true especially with presidents. For example,in Arizona, public schools in the past twenty years were almost fifty times more likely to be named after such things as landforms or plants.School officials say they try to choose names that will not offend anyone. For example,a few years ago,the city of New Orleans banned the naming of any school after a person who owned slaves.Other school systems have rules against naming new schools after any person, living or dead. The researchers say naming a school after a person can lead to important debates about democratic values. They call for more researches to identify the causes and effects of the changes in school names. The causes may include changes in American culture as well as in the political control of school systems.16.Many schools are named after some persons so that________.A.the students can remember the schools for Well, the future is apparently now. The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services. California, it should be noted, isn’t leading the way here. Companies have been testing their vehicles in cit ies across the country. It’s hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated. While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars(and rightfully so), policymakers also should be talking about how self-driving vehicles can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions(排放) and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options. The arrival of driverless vehicles is a chance to make sure that those vehicles are environmentally friendly and more shared. Do we want to copy — or even worsen — the traffic of today with driverless cars? Imagine a future where most adults own individual self-driving vehicles. They tolerate long, slow journeys to and from work on packed highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride, which encourages urban spread. They take their driverless car to an appointment and set the empty vehicle to circle the building to avoid paying for parking. Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport — an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing(叫车) services. A study from the University of California at Davis suggested that replacing petrol-powered private cars worldwide with electric, self-driving and shared systems could reduce carbon emissions from transportation 80% and cut the cost of此卷只装订不密封 班级姓名准考证号考场号座位号transportation infrastructure(基础设施) and operations 40% by 2050. Fewer emissions and cheaper travel sound pretty appealing. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride-hailing services, considering the cost of self-driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues(责任与维护问题). But driverless car ownership could increase as the prices drop and more people become comfortable with the technology.KS5UPolicymakers should start thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless vehicles doesn’t extend the worst aspects of the car-controlled transportation system we have today. The coming technological advancement presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.11. According to the author, attention should be paid to how driverless cars can __________.A. help deal with transportation-related problemsB. provide better services to customersC. cause damage to our environmentD. make some people lose jobs12. As for driverless cars, what is the author’s major concern?A. Safety.B. Side effects.C. Affordability.D. Management.13. What does the underlined word "fielded"in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Employed.B. Replaced.C. Shared.D. Reduced.14. What is the author’s attitude to the future of self-driving cars?A. Doubtful.B. PositiveC. Disapproving.D. Sympathetic.BThere’s a new frontier in 3D printing that’s beginning to come into focus: food. Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve foods on a mass scale. And the i ndustry isn’t stopping there.Food productionWith a 3D printer, a cook can print complicated chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that — it takes years of experience, but a printer makes it easy. A restaurant in Spain uses a Foodini to “recreate forms and pieces” of food that are “exactly the same,” freeing cooks to complete other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3D-printed, rather than farm to table.Sustainability(可持续性)The global population is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by 2050, and some analysts estimate that food production will need to be raised by 50 percent to maintain current levels. Sustainability is becoming a necessity. 3D food printing could probably contribute to the solution. Some experts believe printers could use hydrocolloids (水解胶体) from plentiful renewables like algae(藻类) and grass to replace the familiar ingredients(烹饪原料). 3D printing can reduce fuel use and emissions. Grocery stores of the future might stock "food" that lasts years on end, freeing up shelf space and reducing transportation and storage requirements.NutritionFuture 3D food printers could make processed food healthier. Hod Lipson, a professor at Columbia University, s aid, “Food printing could allow consumers to print food with customized nutritional content, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday’s bread from the supermarket, you’d eat something baked just for you on demand.”ChallengesDespite recent advancements in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Currently, most ingredients must be changed to a paste(糊状物) before a printer can use them, and the printing process is quite time-consuming, because ingredients interact with each other in very complex ways. On top of that, most of the 3D food printers now are restricted to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products英语24字整体教学法may easily go bad. Some experts are skeptical about 3D food printers, believing they are better suited for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.15. What benefit does 3D printing bring to food production?A. It helps cooks to create new dishes.B. It saves time and effort in cooking.C. It improves the cooking conditions.D. It contributes to restaurant decorations.16. What can we learn about 3D food printing from Paragraphs 3?A. It solves food shortages easily.B. It quickens the transportation of food.C. It needs no space for the storage of food.D. It uses renewable materials as sources of food.17. According to Paragraph 4, 3D-printed food _____________.A. is more available to consumersB. can meet individual nutritional needsC. is more tasty than food in supermarketsD. can keep all the nutrition in raw materials18. What is the main factor that prevents 3D food printing from spreading widely?A. The printing process is complicated.B. 3D food printers are too expensive.C. Food materials have to be dry.D. Some experts doubt 3D food printing.19. What could be the best title of the passage?A. 3D Food Printing: Delicious New TechnologyB. A New Way to Improve 3D Food PrintingC. When lab rats are not allowed to sleep, they die within a month. 40One idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memories. 41 We know that, while awake, fresh memories are recorded by reinforcing (加强) connections between brain cells, but the memory processes that take place while we sleep have been unclear.Support is growing for a theory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons(神经元) in the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to from the next day. 42Now we have the most direct evidence yet that he is right. 43 The synapses in the mice taken at the end of a period of sleep were 18 per cent smaller than those taken before sleep, showing that the connections between neurons weaken while sleeping. If Tononi’s theory is right, it would explain why, when we miss a night’s, we find it harder the next day to concentrate and learn new information---our brains may have smaller room for new experiences.Their research also suggests how we may build lasting memories over time even though the synapses become thinner. The team discovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the same size. 44 “You keep what matters,”Tononi says.A. We should also try to sleep well the night before.B. AHere's a good deed you can do without parting with a single thing.Synthetic (合成的) voices for people who have lost the ability to speak only come in generic (一般的) types — think of Stephen Hawking's voice — but one amazing project wants to build custom voices for each person. To do that they need your help:specifically, a recording of your voice.VocalID is the brainchild of two speech scientists, who are turning their research into a much larger project.Voice is very personal and, like a prosthetic (假体的) leg or arm, it makes sense it should be customized to each person. Here's how it works —and don't worry, this does not mean someone will be walking around with the same voice as you out there:After recording a couple of hours of audio in, say, a quiet room with an iPhone, you send it to VocalID, where a program called ModelTalker cuts it up into the basic units of speech that can be recombined as new words and sentences. In that same step, characteristics of the patient's voice —based on what limited sounds they can make — are mixed with the donor's to create a whole new one.VocalID is still in its beginning stages, and they're looking for help from everyone including voice donors, financial support, and programmers.A priority (优先的事物) is making voice donation even easier, cutting down recording time, especially for kids. But as it stands already, your voice is just about the easiest thing to donate.( )1.Stephen Hawking's voice ________.A.has no personal characteristicsB.was donated by a volunteerC.was created by VocalIDD.sounded amazing( )2.We can infer that VocalID aims to ________.A.do research on voicesB.teach some people to speakC.produce prosthetic legs or armsD.help some people have their “own” voice( )3.To create a new voice, which of the following is/are needed?A.Sounds made by the patient.B.A few days of audio recording.C.The voice of at least two donors.D.ModelTalker that can combine words.( )4.What is the main purpose of the text?A.To introduce some jobs in VocalID.B.To encourage readers to donate their voice.C.To advertise a program called ModelTalker.D.To collect money for people who cannot speak.【语篇解读】本文是说明文,介绍了如何给不会说话的人捐献声音。

The survey for British TV channel “Watch” found a great difference between the genders (性别) of today’s young people when compared with their parents’ dreams 25 years or more ago.Playing professional football, being an astronaut and joining the firefighting service topped the boys’ choices, while girls are more likely to be dreaming of taking to the stage as a pop star or actress or joining the medical profession. When asked what they would like their chil dren to do for a living, today’s parents still like the academic (学术的) professions (职业), with law and medicine scoring highly, while being a boss came third.Parents also praised job happiness above wealth (财富) when it comes to their hopes for their children.Nearly 70 percent of the parents surveyed thought that they failed to follow their dreams when it came to their career, with 37 percent thinking it was caused by a lack of aspiration and not having the necessary conditions.46. It was a watercolor pa inting of a mother and her baby. A tear fell from the mother’s eye as she looked lovingly at her child. Beneath the painting Audrey had written these words: “The deep love from Mother, throughme, touches another.” What a beautiful gift! I had the piece of art framed(给…做框) and hung in my office.Years passed with many moves from one office to another and I lost the painting. When she was four years old Audrey had a serious dis ease. How did the author regain the painting?A. She found it from one office.B. One of her former colleagues found it.C. She found it in a storage room.D. Audrey found it for her.53. What is Paragraph 4 mainly talking about?A.The author’s feeling.B. Audrey’s family.C. Audrey’s experience.D. The author’s experience.54. Why does the author value the painting so much?A. It was painted by her most talented student.B. The painting can be worth a lot of money.C. The art value of the painting is immeasurable(无法估计的).D. The painting encourages her to advance(前进).1-5.
