PILOT IN COMMAND

General experience. No person may act as a pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers or of an aircraft certificated for more than one pilot flight crewmember unless that person is sole manipulator of the flight controls has made at least – Three takeoffs and three landings within the preceding 90 days in an aircraft of the same category, class, and type (if a type rating is required), and, if the aircraft to be flown is an airplane with a tail-wheel, the takeoffs and landings must have been made to a full stop in an airplane with a tail-wheel

General experience. No persons or property are carried on board the aircraft, other than those necessary for the conduct of the flight.

Night takeoff and landing experience. No person may act as pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise, unless within the preceding 90 days, the pilot acted as sole manipulator of the flight controls has made at least three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop during the period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before sunrise in an aircraft of the same category, class, and type (if a type rating is required).

General experience. The takeoffs and landings may be accomplished in a flight simulator or flight training device that is – Approved by the Administrator for landings – Used in accordance with an approved course conducted by a training center certificated under part 142

A pilot, acting as second in command, successfully completes the instrument competency check specified in FAR Part 61. How long does this pilot remain current if no further IFR flights are made?

Summary
• To act as pilot in command: – At least 3 takeoff and landings within the past 90 days: – Sole manipulator – Category, class, and type if required. – For a tail-wheel the landings must be made in a tail-wheel plane to a full stop. – No persons or property may be carried on the aircraft except those required. – May be accomplished in a flight training device or simulator if under Part 142 – Night landings must be between one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise and to a full stop.

• Instrument experience within the last six months: – In the category of aircraft or in a simulator or flight training device representative of the category in which currency is sought. – 6 approaches – Holding procedures – Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigation systems.

Instrument proficiency check. A person who does not meet the instrument experience requirements within the prescribed time, or within 6 calendar months after the prescribed time, may not serve as pilot in command under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR until that person passes an instrument proficiency check consisting of a representative number of tasks required by the instrument rating practical test. The instrument proficiency check must be in an aircraft that is appropriate to the aircraft category.

Instrument experience. No person may act as pilot in command under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR, unless within the preceding 6 calendar months, that person has performed and logged under actual or simulated instrument conditions, either in flight in the appropriate category of aircraft for the instrument privileges sought or in a flight simulator or flight training device that is representative of the aircraft category for the instrument privileges sought must have flown at least – six instrument approaches, – Holding procedures, – Intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigation systems.

Summary
• If the required instrument experience is not gained through the above method:
– 6 months of grace is given for a pilot to acquire the required experience in VFR conditions or simulator or flight training device. – If requirements are still not met the pilot most go through an instrument proficiency check. – This check must be in the aircraft category in which currency is sought.
