The history of the flying car is almost as old as that of powered flight itself. It started with the Curtiss Autoplane of 1917, an awkward-looking machine with removable wings. It never left the ground. Later machines made it into the skies but failed to take off commercially. Money is now pouring into flying taxis. On March 30th Lilium, a German company that develops them, announced a merger with SPAC, an acquisition company that values it at $3. 3 bn -- a sign that investors think the business will fly.
Thanks to better batteries and lightweight materials, some of them are ready to carry passengers. Up to 300 firms are working on short-range battery-powered craft that take off and land vertically. Carmakers, tech companies and others are investing money into the field. The government isoffering a glide pathto certification.America's Federal Aviation Administration is engaged in the process with around 30 firms, says Natasha Santha of LEK, a consulting company.
Midway between a cab and a helicopter, flying taxis have distinct advantages over both. Quiet electric motors allow them to operate frequent services. They require only a patch of concrete to land, unlike noisy helicopters, which face severe operating restrictions in most cities. They can fly four or five times faster than a cab can drive and do not get stuck in traffic. Prices can be kept low by ride-sharing. Joby, based inCalifornia, says its five-seater machine will enter commercial service in 2024. The firm calculates the initial cost of around $4 per person per mile may soon fall by 25%. A trip fromManhattanto JFK airport would then cost $30-40 per passenger.
The real revolution will come when full autonomy takes out the cost of a pilot. Archer hopes to run such aircraft by 2028. They face fewer obstacles in the air than earth-bound cars do on the road; airliners mostly fly on autopilot as it is. Still, as one industry insider puts it, it is probably best to accustom passengers and regulators to airborne taxis before getting rid of the driver.
4. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. The flying car can date back to the 1920s.
B. Investors see the potential of the business of the flying car.
C. The flying car never left the ground successfully in history.
D. A German company has launched a new flying car into the market.
5. What does "offering a glide path" in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. Giving the green light.
B. Providing timely assistance.
C. Presenting legal guidance.
D. Conducting strict management.
6. Which of the following is the strength of flying taxis?
A. Costing as little as cabs.
B. Saving passengers from the traffic jam.
C. Reducing air pollution.
D. Having no operating restrictions.
7. What can be inferred about the flying taxis from the last paragraph?
A. They will develop faster than cars.
B. Passengers will quickly get used to taking them.
C. The regulators will take measures to promote them.
D. Autopilot flying taxis will probably replace those with pilots.

Six Neanderthals who lived in what is now France were eaten by their fellow Neanderthals some 100,000 years ago, according to fearful evidence of the cannibalistic (食人的) event discovered by scientists in a cave in the 1990s. Now, researchersmay have figured out why the Neanderthals, including two children, became victims of cannibalism: Global warming.
While previous studies have examined Neanderthal remains to find proof of cannibalistic behavior, this is the first study to offer clues as to what may have led Neanderthals to become cannibals. Scientists found that rapid changes in local ecosystems as the planet warmed may have wiped out the animal species that Neanderthals ate, forcing them to look elsewhere to fill their stomachs.
The researchers examined a layer of sediment (沉积物) in a cave known as Baume Moula-Guercy, in southeastern France. In that layer, charcoal (碳) and animal bones were so well-preserved that scientists could reconstruct an environmental picture representing 120,000 to 130,000 years ago. They discovered that the climate in the area was likely even warmer than it is today, and that the change from a cold, dry climate to a warmer one happened quickly. “Maybe within a few generations”, study co-author Emmanuel said. As the animals that once populated the landscape disappeared, some Neanderthals ate what they could find — their neighbors.
Cannibalism is by no means unique to Neanderthals, and has been practiced by humans and their s “from the early Palaeolithic to theBronze Age and beyond,” the study authors reported. The behavior adopted by the starving Neanderthals in the Baume Moula-Guercy should therefore not be viewed as “a mark of bestiality (兽性) or sub-humanity”, but as an emergency adaptation to a period of severe environmental stress, according to the
study.
8. What does the study mainly focus on?
A. The social behavior of Neanderthals.
B. The reason for cannibalism among Neanderthals.
C. The climate change in southeasternFrance.
D. The influence of global warming on ancient animals.
9. What can possibly be used to describe the climate in southeasternFrance120,000 to 130,000 years ago?
A. It was no warmer than it is today.
B. It was first warm while later cold and dry.
C. Its change was mild and went through quite a long process.
D. Its change is a chief factor contributing to cannibalism.
10. Which of the following might the study authors agree with?
A. Neanderthals’ cannibalism showed their bestiality.
B. Cannibalism was actually a measure the Neanderthals had to adopt to survive.
C. Neanderthals’ cannibalism guaranteed their rule over other tribes.
D. Only Neanderthals were found to have cannibalism in human history.
11. Where can you most possibly find this passage?
A. In a science journal.
B. In a travel brochure.
C. In a history book.
D. In a geography book.
D
Typhoons can be deadly — in 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest ever recorded, was responsible for 6,340 deaths—and cost billions in damages. Current forecast modelscan only predict these storms 10 days in advance, at most, and they cannot precisely predict how intense the storms will become.
An international team of researchers has developed a model that analyzes nearly a quarter of Earth’s surface and atmosphere in order to better predict the conditions that birth typoons.
“The target problem of this study is how to foretell the birth of typhoons,” said paper author Mingkui Li, associate professor in the Key Laboratory of Physical Oceanography in the Ocean University of China and the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QNLM). “We specifically address three aspects: the beginning time, inner pressure and maximum wind speed.”
The researchers also accounted for the influence of one variable(变量) on another, such as wind speed on
sea surface temperature. This influence is well understood and accounted for in climate predictions and in weather forecasts, butithas not been fully applied in understanding how long-term climate affects day-to-day weather, according to Li. “We aimed to provide insights on the time scale that can be used to forecast typhoons in advance.”
From their study, the researchers determined that a model with the ability to better understand the relationship between warm sea surface temperatures and weak wind movement— conditions that favor typhoon formation—could improve typhoon predictability.
“Our goal is to develop a 10 to 30-day prediction system that will lead to seamless(无缝的) weather-climate predictions.” Shaoqing Zhang, paper author and professor in the Key Laboratory of Physical Oceanography, said.
12. What is the problem with the present forecast system?
A. It cannot foretell storms in advance.
B. It is ineffective in accuracy and timeliness.
C. It costs too much and causes great damages.
D. It can hardly predict the intensity of typhoons.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The variable.
B. The climate
C. The temperature.
D. The influence.
14. What is the purpose of the study?
A. To advance the prediction system.
B. To figure out the three main aspects.
C. To know how climate affects daily weather.
D. To understand the influence of the variables.
15. Where is this text most likely from?
A. Awork diary.
B. A travel guidebook.
C. A science magazine.
D. A fantasy fiction.

Yesterday, I went to an amazing Chinese art festival. There were different stands which artists could present their skills and wonderfully teaching the visitors! It was definite an exciting experience for a foreign student like me. What caught up my attention first in a breathtaking exhibition of Chinese porcelain was a 15th-century qinghua bowl, vividly illustrating a dragon played with a ball.
Then I tried paper cutting, that is, making images out of paper. It was difficult, and a lot of fun! Under an artist’s help, I managed to make one in shape of a fish. Meanwhile, there was also an old man writing Chinese calligraphy and his writing was very free and elegant that I was attracted! Then another man sitting next to him shows me how seal cutting worked. He made one for me with my name in Chinese—pretty awesome!
