Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with a furious frown on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous!”“I know, Devi,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Devi had been to was the alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother had found a new jo b in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local pool. The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Devi confidently slipped into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic. On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench, paralyzed with fear. She huddled with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, hermother noticed right away that Devi was upset. “Honey, I’ve signed you up for Angela’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she assured Devi, showing photos of Angela with her prize-winning students. Paragraph 1Then came the time for Devi to take her first lesson.Paragraph 2Soon Angela came over to where Devi sat and introduced herself.【答案】Paragraph 1Then came the time for Devi to take her first lesson. She dragged her feet to the side of the pool and sat down, in doubt whether lessons would be helpful. Scanning around, Devi spotted her instructor across the pool, together with the little kids who jumped into the water like fish leaping into the ocean. She watched in amazement. Envious as Devi was, a flush of embarrassment soon crept to her cheeks when a little girl passed by, asking her not to be scared. How embarrassing! She hung her head.Paragraph 2Soon Angela came over to where Devi sat and introduced herself. Devi was astonished to be made aware that Angela had never learned swimming until she was 20. Greatly inspired, Devi now regained hope. She entered the pool a second time in the company of Angela, several cheerful kids floating near to cheer her on. Devi began to feel more at ease, her movement less stiff and her breath more even.

There are now well over 1,000 colleges and universities that don’t require SAT or ACT scores in deciding whom to admit, a number that is growing every year. 61 new study finds that scores on these tests are of little value in predicting students’ performance in college, and 62 (raise) the question: Should those tests be required at all? When a college considers test-optional admissions policies, the first 63 (react) people feel is that the college will admit less 64 (qualify) students. Twenty years ago, I was at a party, talking to a man whose name I have long since forgotten. Sometimes I think this man came into my life for the unique purpose of telling me this story, one about how brave, creative and trusting his brother was, which has delighted and inspired me ever since. For the purpose of this story, let's call the little brother Little Brother.Little Brother, a young painter, went to France to surround himself with beauty and inspiration. He lived on the cheap, painted every day, visited museums, traveled to picturesque places, bravely spoke to everyone he met, and showed his work to anyone who would look at it. One afternoon, he struck up a conversation at a cafe with a group of charming young people who turned out to be some fancy nobles. They took a liking to Little Brother and invited him to a party that weekend in a castle in the Loire Valley. They said this was going to be the party of the year. It would be attended by the rich and famous and by several crowned heads of Europe. Best of all it was a masquerade ball (化妆舞会)where nobody would hesitate in their spending on the costumes. “Dress up,” they said, “and join us!”Excited, Little Brother worked all week on a costume that he was certain would be highly impressive. He held back on neither the details nor the imagination of this creation. Then he rented acar and drove three hours to the castle. He changed into his costume in the car and went up the castle steps. Little Brother entered the ballroom, head held high.Upon arrival, he immediately realized his mistake. This was indeed a costume party—his new friends had not misled him there—but he had missed one detail in translation: Thi s was a themed costume party. The theme was “a medieval (中世纪的)court”. And Little Brother was dressed as a lobster (龙虾).All around him, the wealthy and beautiful were dressed in fancy clothes, wearing sparkling jewels.________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________ _________________________________________ He took a deep breath and walked onto the dance floor.________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________ _________________________________________ 【答案】All around him, the wealthy and beautiful were dressed in fancy clothes, wearing sparkling jewels. Little Brother, on the other hand, was wearing a red coat, red tights, red ballet slippers, and giant red claws. Also, his face was painted red. He stood at the top of the steps for one long, frightful moment. Running away in shame seemed like the easiest response. But he didn't run. Somehow, he found his determination. He'd come this far, after all. He'd worked really hard to make this costume, and he was proud of it.He took a deep breath and w alked onto the dance floor. Ashe moved into the crowd, a silence fell.“I am the court lobster," Little Brother bowed deeply and announced. Then: laughter. Not ridicule- -just joy. They loved him. They loved his sweetness, his weirdness (怪诞),his giant red claws, and his skinny legs in his bright tights. He made the party. Sometimes its like that. What you absolutely must not do is walk out; otherwise you will miss the party.【解析】本文是一篇记叙文。

But for those who are looking to expand their horizons while still staying safe, the following three travel trends in 2021 may provide inspirations. Let’s take a look.StaycationWith many travel restrictions during the pandemic, people preferred traveling to nearby places in 2020. This trend continues in 2021. According to search data, 62 percent of people are interested in taking a vacation within driving distance of home. People who live in large cities want to get back in touch with nature. Travelers are looking for places different from their everyday accommodations, for example, farm stays, villas and cottages.Pod travelWhile 2020 saw a rise in solo travel and isolated adventures, 2021 shows that people want to be more connected. “Pod travel”, or gathering in isolated spaces with loved ones, is growing in popularity. 85 percent of survey respondents favor traveling with family or friends, and over half of the trips searched include three or more people. Pod travel is here to stay for those who want to safely be together while reducing risks associated with socializing with others.Remote working and travelingMany people worked and learned from home in 2020 because of the pandemic. Remote working blurs the line between working and traveling. There was a 128 percent increase in the mention of phrases such as “relocation”, “relocate”, “remote work” and “trying a new neighborhood”. Although she only worked for him for a few weeks, she remained good friends with Alfred Nobel for the next 20 years. When she became involved in the peace movement inEurope, she promised to keep Nobel informed of its progress. When Alfred Nobel died in 1896, his will included the establishment of a peace prize, thanks to Bertha von Suttner’s influence.Bertha von Suttner was born in an aristocratic (贵族) military family, but she spent the second half of her life working for peace. She wrote books, attended peace conferences, gave lectures and helped organize peace societies inAustria,GermanyandHungary, as well as the International Peace Bureau inSwitzerland. Its end to war theme was both the ambition (抱负) and the most important goal in the life of this great woman.Bertha von Suttner worked so hard for peace because she believed that a terrible war would break out inEuropeif nations didn’t work hard to establish lasting peace institutions. She made many major achievements for a more peaceful world, but two months after she died, World War I broke out. A hundred years after she won the Nobel Peace Prize, nations still seem to view war as a choice to work out their problems. But like Bertha von Suttner did, many today are working hard around the world to help strengthen peace institutions and spread the idea that it’s time to put an end to war.4. Which of the following is true about Bertha von Suttner?A. She worked for Alfred Nobel for 20 years.B. She helped Alfred Nobel draw up his will.C. She lost her life in World War I.CA wife’s level of education positively influences both her own and her husband’s chances of having a long life, according to a new Swedish study. In the study, researchers from the Swedish Institute for Social Research inStockholmfound that a woman’s level of education had a stronger connection to the likelihood of her husband dying over education. What’s more, they discovered that a husband’s social class, based on his occupation, had a greater influence on his wife’s longevity(长寿) than her own class.“Women traditionally take more responsibility for the home than men do, and, as a result, women’s levels of education might be more important for determining lifestyles-for example, in terms of food choices-than those of men,” say Srs. Robert Erikson and Jenny Torssander of the Swedish Institute for Social Research inStockholm. The results show that a husband’s level of education does not influence his longevity, but that men with partners who had quit studying after school were 25 per cent more likely to die early than men living with women holding university degrees. In turn, those married to women with university degrees were 13 percent more likely to die early than those whose wives had post-graduate qualifications.According to the researchers, a woman with a good education may not marry a man who drinks and smokes too much or who drives carelessly, and men with such habits may not prefer highly educated woman. Drs. Yesterday our class had a heated discussion about whether we should travel during holidays. One man's meat is another man's poison. Some students are for it. They think visitors can enjoy a good variety of scenery. Facing glorious(壮丽的)touristattractions, travelers may well broaden their eyes. At the same time, they can keep fit by walking on foot, and taste different delicious food that they can't get in their own hometowns. What's more, travelling can make a contribution to our economy development, mainly to the local economy development. Most travelers need to buy tickets to go to their destinations, thus traffic department will earn money. Travelers also need to sleep and eat, thus local hotels and restaurants also share benefits. Paying admission(门票费) benefits local governments. As for native farmers, they can benefit from selling local specialities to many travelers. In this case, money circulation(货币流通) is speeded up.On the other hand, other students are against it. They believe it's a waste of money. Some famous places of interest are too crowded, while those smaller ones are not worth visiting. Travelling may cause traffic jams here and there. What's worse, due to travelling here and there, there exist some accidents on the road. Besides, it's known that travelling can also pollute the local environment. In order to reduce air and waste pollution, people should have a rest to the full, reading books or watching TV at home. Recently, many have been afraid of being infected with COVID-19 in particular. As far as I am concerned, travelling is a good choice to spend holidays. And the government should take some measures to solve the existing problems. More policemen should be on duty to deal with accidents in time. Can we make a small change to the period when people don't have to go to work in some provinces? Let's take the example of the National Holiday, if some provinces of our country spend this holiday mainly in late September, with the National Day coming to an end, rather than in earlyOctober, most famous places of interest will not become crowded. At the same time, visitors must obey traffic rules and shouldn't throw rubbish freely here and there. Last but not least, never should we travel when there is a pandemic(大流行病,瘟疫). It's our duty to prevent its spread.12. What does the underlined sentence “One man's meat is another man's poison” in this passage mean?A. Some persons like meat, while others don't.B. Different persons taste meals differently.C. A man mistakes meat for poison.D. Different persons have different opinions on one thing.13. How do travelers contribute to our economy development?A. They buy all kinds of tickets.B. They walk, sleep, eat and meet native farmers.C. They speed up money circulation by spending money on transport, accommodations(膳宿), specialities andadmission.D. They only enjoy visiting many glorious tourist attractions.14. Which sentence of the following is not true?A. There's a need for more policemen.B Some provinces can change the date of an official holiday completely.C. Visitors must obey traffic rules and shouldn't throw rubbish freely.D. People should never travel when there is a pandemic.15. What the author's attitude to travel during holidays?A. He doesn't show his opinion.B. He doesn't agree at all.C. 2020—2021学年度姜堰、海门、淮阴、天一中学第二学期G4联考高三语文试题一、现代文阅读(35分)(一)现代文阅读I(本题共5小题,19分)阅读下面的文字,完成1~5题。

Father’s Day ChessIt was Dale's third Sunday volunteering at the retirement home. He had thought it would be a good way to give back. But today he just felt tired. While on a short break, Dale took a walk through the garden. There were people sitting on benches, chatting together. A woman sat knitting, looking very pleased with herself. The strands of brightly-colored yarn disappeared quickly through her hands.Across the courtyard, there was a man sitting alone at a table with a chessboard in front of him. Dale watched with curiosity as the man would stare at the pieces, then move them, and then would do the same from the other side of the board. On his way home after the day had ended, Dale found himself thinking about the man. How he was hunched over in deep thought, playing a game against himself. How odd, he thought. Each Sunday, Dale would see the man doing the same thing. While everyone else talked with one another or happily carried on, the man would sit, slightly bent over and scratching his chin. His eyes rarely came off of the chessboard. One Sunday, Dale went to the garden on his break expecting to see the man at his normal spot. But he wasn't there. It was Father's Day and there were many visitors at the home. Dale shrugged and thought the man must be busy with his family. That afternoon, Dale was mopping the hallways when he happened to pass by the man's room. The door was slightly open and he could see the man sitting in a chair next to the window, peering out at the courtyard. Dale knocked lightly and asked to come in.The man nodded. Dale saw a collection of framed photographs on the bedside table. “Are those your children?”he asked.“Yes, they’re all grown and live far away. They have their own kids now,”he replied. Dale, not wanting the man to be alone on Father's Day, had an idea.

I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well preparedfor the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice myscript. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine. The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in anexpressionless voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, my eyes filled with tears. Finally, results were announced after the contest. I didn't win any prizes not even a consolation one. It was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself.

He said he thought of the recycling program, because he wanted to inspire children in the small town to read and pay attention to the environment.''My goal is to spread the passion and love for books among those people in Italy who do not usually read while at the time helping the environment," Gentile explained. The idea for the initiative (倡议) came after Gentile collaborated with a nearby middle school on an aluminum recycling project. Working together, the schoolchildren and Gentile collected enough cans to purchase books for an entire classroom. His new program too off from there and has already spread into northern Italy: Gentile's hopes his work will continue to make headlines and become a worldwide initiative. The free books come from customers in Gentile's shop who have donated money to purchase a ''suspended" book. The idea comes from a World War II practice in which customers would buy two Coffees: one for themselves and another for the next person in line. Gentile has been using the extra books as part of his recycling initiative, While Gentile's program is a great way to recycle and get kids to read, it also brings awareness to the growing problem of plastic waste. Single-use plastics make up around 26 percent of all the plastics in the world, only 14 percent of which are recycled. Plastics that end up in landfills take around 500 years to decompose (分解),is a major concern for environmentalists.Cutting down on plastic waste is important if we want to better the environment for future generations, andrecycling programs like Gentile's book giveaway are a great way to meet that goal.4. A New Way to Deal with Plastic WasteCA team of researchersfrom theUniversityofColorado Boulderhave created a revolutionary type of robotic muscles. They are strong and flexible at the same time, can feel the movements they perform and, whenever they suffer damage, they can self-heal. However, what is best about them is probably the fact that they are extremely cheap to manufacture. The robotic muscles have been called actuators, and have drawn inspiration from real-life muscles. By creating robots equipped with this kind of actuators, researchers would allowthem to perform movements just like human muscles. To make the robotic muscles work, they filled some flexible material with electrodes(电极)and with liquid and oil. Then, they applied some electricity, and the liquid and oil started moving around the electrodes and powered them. This way, the robotic muscles started contracting and relaxing just like real muscles, but a lot quicker.Researchers also took inspiration from the variety of human muscles, and created more types of actuators, each of them performing a different movement. They called these robotic muscles HASEL ( Hydraulically-Amplified Self-healing Electrostatic). However, they are superior to biological muscles as they are stronger, faster, and more flexible.Even the researchers were amazed they could develop such technology. Eric Acome, the author of one of thestudies, explained what is unique about the robotic muscles.“The ability to create electrically powered soft actuators that lift a gallon of water at several times per second is something we haven't seen before.”These muscles are special because they are also self-healing. This property is given by the liquid placed inside of them, which also gives them a lot more advantages than those mechanisms (机械)using solids. In the end, the material which keeps the liquid, the oil and the electrodes is extremely cheap. It is a type of polymer (聚合物)similar to the one used for potato chips bags, and can be manufactures for only 10 cents.8. What can we learn about actuators?A. They can heal on their own.B. They are biological muscles.C. They can not move like human muscles.D. They are slower to react than real muscles.9. What do actuators use to directly power electrodes?A. Solids.B. Liquid and oil.C. A type of polymer.D. Potato chips bags.10. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. The origin of actuators.B. The opinions on actuators.C. The advantages of actuators.D. The significance of actuators.11. In which part of a newspaper will the textmost probably appear?A. Health.B. Culture.C. Education.D. Technology.DNot long after the first fitness magazine was published, a list probably followed soon after, ranking the best fitness equipment. This tradition has continued, with the implied message: usethisand exercise willbe yours. And that's part of the problem, says Dr. Lieberman, a professor of Harvard University. There isn't one “best” anything to achieve fitness. Besides, people understand exercise is good for them. Knowledge about exercise still doesn't motivate. Before you can answer why, it helps to look at history. Before the Industrial Revolution, people fetched water and walked up stairs because they had to. But then technology made life and work easier. Exercise has become something that people have to carve out time for. “It's a fundamental instinct to avoid physical activity when it's neither necessary nor rewarding,” he says.It would seem like being healthy would qualify as necessary, but a doctor's prescription to exercise “can make it like taking cod liver oil,” Lieberman says. “Sometimes it works, but more often than not, it doesn't. And it's stillcoming across as an order, and “not having a heart attack in five years is not an immediate reward,” says Dr. Beth Frates, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.People might not want to exercise because it's never been enjoyable. Most of us probably have memories of gym class, not being picked for a team, or being in a fitness center that's filled with in-shape people. The majority don't feel excited. They feel that exercise isn't for them, but it can be. Coaching people in an empowering and motivating way can work much better than ordering someone to exercise. It starts with an expanded definition of what counts as exercise, and an injection of what's rarely used to describe exercise, but is certainly allowed: namely, fun.12. What does the underlined “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?A. The magazine.B. The tradition.C. The equipment.D. The message.13. What can we infer about technology?A. It improves life quality.B. It saves people's time.C. It drives social progress.D. It makes exercise less likely.14. Why does the author mention “cod liver oil” in paragraph 4?A. To attach importance to health.B. To present a doctor's prescription.C. To explain exercise is considered inessential.D. To introduce the latest medical application.15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Exercise should be made more joyful.B. It's more fun to work out with others.C. We may encounter bad workout experiences.D. Orders work well to motivate people to exercise.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, "Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was.“Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.
“I'm sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid
doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest.
My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

Paragraph 2:
Finally, results were announced after the contest. _____
Possible version:
Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in an expressionless voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, my eyes filled with tears.
Finally, results were announced after the contest.I didn't win any prizes not even a consolation one. It was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I now regretted being so arrogant. I had learmed my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the two sayings, "Pride goes before a fall."and "Practice makes perfect."
