Owning a pet makes us healthier and happier, but for many of us,long hours at work, tight budgets and small flats means it’s just not practical. But there’s good news for animal lovers;you can now cozy up with a cup of tea while spending time with furry friends,as the global movement of animal cafes has reached the UK.
The international phenomenon originated in Taipei, where the world’s first cat cafe,Cat Flower Garden, opened in 1998.Curious tourists soon discovered the pet paradise and brought the concept over to Japan. The first Japanese cat cafe opened in Osaka in 2005,and now there are said to be nearly 40 in Tokyo alone.
Japan has now gone far beyond the original concept, and some of the trendiest(时髦的) places to visit nowadays have owls, rabbits and goats hanging around.Tokyo’s Fukuro no Mise, which means the “Shop of Owls”,has full guest lists for up to two months.
Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium was the first of its kind to open up in East London in 2014.The successful cat cafe takes bookings 50 days ahead and usually about 90% of them book out about 5-6 weeks in advance,Though the business has been a success, the owner Lauren Pears worries a little bit about the sudden rise of cat cafes everywhere.
“Cat cafes are still in their beginnings here and we’ve seen a very recent cautionary tale springing up in Singapore with the sudden burst of cat cafes in the city.Earlier this year, one of them was closed down after serious animal welfare issues resulted in the deaths of several cats.”She emphasizes that even though the job is fun and rewarding,it also comes with serious responsibility.

(2017·福建漳州八校联考)
“Mobile phones killed our man,”screamed one headline last year. Also came statements that an unpublished study had found that mobile phones cause memory loss. And a British newspaper devoted its front page to a picture supposedly showing how mobile phones heat the brain. For
anyone who uses a moblie phone, these are worrying times. But speak to the scientists whose work is the focus of these scares and you will hear a different story.
What we do have, however, are some results suggesting that mobile phones’ emission(辐射) have a variety of strange effects on living tissue that can’t be explained by the general radiation biology. And it’s only when the questions raised by these experiments are answered that we’ll be able to say for sure what moblie phones might be doing to the brain.
One of the strange effects comes from the now famous “memory loss”study.Alan Preece and his colleagues at the University of Bristol placed a device(装置)that copied the microwave emission of mobile phones to the left ear of volunteers. The volunteers were all good at recalling words and pictures they had been shown on a computer screen.Preece says he still can’t comment on the effects of using a mobile phone for years on end.But he rules out the suggestion that mobile phones have an immediate effect on our cognitive(感知的) abilities.“I’m pretty sure there is no effect on short-term memory,” he says.
Another expert,Tattersall, remarked that his latest findings have removed fears about memory loss. One result, for instance, suggests that nerve cell synapses(神经元突触)exposed to microwaves become more—rather than less—receptive to undergoing changes linked to the memory formation.
It would be an even happier outcome if microwave turned out to be good for you.It sounds crazy, but a couple of years ago a team led by William Adey at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in California, found that mice exposed to microwave for two hours a day were less likely to develop brain tumours(肿瘤) when given a cancer-causing chemical.
So should we forget about mobile phone radiation causing brain tumours and making us unable to think clearly or reasonably?
“If it doesn’t certainly cause cancer in animals and cells, then it probably isn’t going to cause cancer in humans,” says William. And while there’s still no absolute evidence that mobile phone does damage your memories or give you cancer, the unanimity is:Don’t panic.
5.What worries people who use mobile phones?
A.Mobile phones will kill them.
B.Mobile phones cause memory loss.
C.Mobile phones heat the brain.
D.All above is right.
答案 D

B.Disagree.
C.Approve.
D.Wait and see.
答案 B
解析观点态度题。
根据第三段最后一句“I’m pretty sure there is no effect on short-term memory”可知,他不同意这种观点。
故选B。
7.The underlined word “unanimity” in the last paragraph most probably means “”.
A.consensus
B.disagreement
C.possibility
D.impossibility
答案 A
解析词义猜测题。
根据上文“And while there’s still no absolute evidence that mobile phone does damage your memories or give you cancer...”可知,并没有绝对的证据能证明手机对你的记忆力有损伤或者让你得癌症,所以这里意为“一致意见是:不要惊慌”。
故选A。
8.From the fifth paragraph,we can infer that being exposed to microwaves for two hours .
A.can result in killing you
B.is likely to develop brain tumours
C.is unlikely to develop brain tumours
D.will cause your loss of memory for ever

Forget about the “post-1995 generation”.Young people born in 1995 or later have another name in English—Generation Z.
Now entering adulthood and soon to join the workforce,Generation Z grew up in a special period of time—a time in which technology developed fast, social changes happened every day,the Internet became universal and, sadly,so did global terrorism.
It is believed that Generation Z is the generation that is going to shape our future, which is why policy makers, sociologists and company leaders are trying their best to understand these young people.
So,what are Gen Z-ers really like?
Most people agree that the single biggest difference between Gen Z and other generations is how connected they are. This is a group of people who have been familiar with social media as soon as they were born.Social media has changed the way Gen Z-ers communicate with each other and how they get and understand information.
“We are the first true digital natives.I can almost create a document, edit it,post a photo on Instagram and talk on the phone, all at the same time,”said Hannah Payne,an 18-year-old student at UCLA,according to The Ne w York Times. “Generation Z takes in information very fast and loses interest just as fast.”
It may be true that Generation Z-ers have a shorter attention span(注意力持续时间) than a goldfish, but since they grew up among social changes, they are more active in politics.According to the British Election Study,58 percent of 18- to 24-year-old voted in the 2015 general election in the UK,a big jump from 38 percent in 2005.
Generation Z-ers are also culture creators.“Growing up with the Internet has freed this generation from traditional cultural expression.” Wrote Grace Masback,a Huffington Post blogger and a Gen Z-er herself.According to Masback, these young people are no longer willing to let their creativity be limited by their parents of traditional rules. They watch videos and read news online instead of on TV,and they share their experiences on social media.
“We decide what kind of content we want to experience and choose how we experience it,”wrote Masback.

(2017·北京西城区期末)
Casual Dress in the Workplace
For Ruth,an employee at an insurance company,Friday isn’t just another workday. It is the day when she can wear a sweater and casual trousers instead of business suit. 12 “It is a real treat. It puts us in good mood and winds the week down.” Ruth has joined thousands of workers across the United States who happily change from jackets, ties, and dresses to jeans, polo shirts, and sweaters on Fridays.
Why dress-down Friday? “I think it gives an atmosphere of less formality(正式),” says President Matthew of Entex Industries.Today, dressing casually on the job is a way to show your company is in style.Another contributor is faxes, voice mail and email, which have reduced public contact. 13
However, even though dressing down is popular, the trend is controversial. Some workers remain strongly opposed.“You have got all the time in the world to dress down when you retire,” declared one woman. 14 “We had some very important guests come in on a Friday a few months ago,” says another worker.“These people dressed in navy suits. Our people dressed down.I thought it was embarrassing. It sent the wrong message about our company.” Many people
feel that suits, ties and dresses are superior to casual clothes in creating a positive professional image.
15 Some experts think it will go away one day.As long as the trend continues, though, dressing casually can cause a little confusion in the workplace.Business people aren’t sure what to wear, and many people just put on whatever they feel like in the morning. 16 They believe dressing down at work is one of the signs that the society is lowering its standards of everything.Czardas and John T.Malloy, author of Dress for Success, say psychological changes occur when people dress up.“There is no question what you wear affects what you do,your performance, and your attitude,” says Malloy.
A.Will the dress-down trend last?
B.Will dressing casually become popular?
C.The casual dress trend worries some fashion professionals.
D.It is when she feels more confident and gets ready for next promotion.
E.She loves the day away from her usual dressy suits and high-heeled shoes.
F.Others worry that dressing casually lowers an employer’s professional image.
G.With fewer out-of-the-office meetings, people are dressing less to impress and more for comfort. 语篇解读本文讲述的是“职场休闲装”。
