I have safely arrived on the boat Pangaea. It is amazing that all of us should get the chance to be the captain of it. This is the boat that Mike Horn once sailed to the South pole.
We stopped in Bluff, and set off to meet the Maoris(毛利人).
I thought at first that the Maoris were wild men living in a tribe and wearing animal fur. But actually they just live as we do, both with their clothes and food.
We came to a hut which was decorated with patterns from long ago. Before entering, we were told to line up, men following women as an old woman stood in front of the hut singing. You can tell that they have not left all their traditions behind.
The old lady gave us an introduction to the legends of New Zealand, the Maoris and the Pounamu (a local green stone).
Then came the most interesting part, sharing the Maoris’s song and dance. Boys learned the Haka and for girls it’s the Uka. While the Maoris performed the songs, I enjoyed rocking my body a nd blinking my eyes with the rhythm, an instinct that came straight from the heart. Awesome!
What is more surprising was that after the show, an old Maoris lady came to tell me that she had two granddaughters whose faces looked just like mine!
Yes, the first Maoris sailed to New Zealand from Asia, which might indicate a close relationship with Chinese people. No wonder I was so moved by the dances and songs the Maoris have. It is so heartwarming to touch a culture that is so far away, but which you relate to so closely.
21. The best title for the passage is _______________.
A. A Pleasant Journey
B. The Magical South Pole
C. Meeting the Maoris
D. A Brave Explorer
22. We can infer that Bluff belongs to _________________.
A. the South Pole
B. New Zealand
C. Asia
D. Switzerland
23. The “Haka” and “Uka” in paragraph 6 refer to ________.
A. the Maoris’ languages
B. names of different songs
C. two dances
D. ways to make a living
24. We can learn from the passage that ___________.
A. the Maoris old lady knew me long ago.
B. the Maoris are all Chinese.
C. Maori women’s social position is higher than men.
D. the Maoris probably have their root in Asia.
B
I have a cousin. If you saw him on market day with his gumboots, old cotton jacket and worn hat, you might think he was a tramp (流浪汉).
But he is either buying or selling cattle for thousands of pounds. He does not have an extravagant (奢侈的)lifestyle or expensive tastes and probably does not pay himself much of a salary.
But the farmhouse, dozens of acres of land, farm buildings, tractors, machinery and Land Rover, cattle, chicken and crops must be worth a fortune. You might describe him as a wealthy man, but he does not look like it.
My father owned a shop which sold newspapers cigarettes, tobacco, birthday cards, toys, books, magazines and sweets.
The shop provided a comfortable living but we were n ot rich. The only extravagance was that my father owned a car when most people in our town could not afford one, apart from the professionals such as doctors, lawyers, dentists and accountants.
My point is that the appearance can be deceptive. You often can not tell the rich from the way they look.
I once met Richard Branson, the Virgin Airlines Tycoon. He’d flown across the Atlantic, landed in the Irish sea and was rescued. He was a jeans, T-shirt and sneakers sort of guy. You’d never have guessed he was a multimillionaire.
Andrew Bruce, Lord Bruce, the 11th Earl of Elgin, invited a party of press people to his stately home in Fife, Scotland. His forefather, the 7th Earl of Elgin was famous for removing and transporting to Britain priceless sculptures from the Parthenon in Greece. The so-called Elgin Marbles could be seen in the British Museum. It was midwinter and the Earl’s castle was freezing cold, despite a log fire burning in the firepl ace. He explained to us “I am sorry it is so cold, but you should know that a gentleman’s house is always cold.”
There you have it: wealth does not always bring comfort.
25. What is the author’s cousin?
A. A poor tramp.
B. A rich farmer.
C. A successful businessman.
D. A respected official.
26. The underlined word “deceptive “in the sixth paragraph means ___________.

28. The author mentioned Andrew Bruce and his forefather in order to _________.

Social media manager. App designer. Offshore wind farm engineer. Ten years ago, none of these jobs existed. Today, they are hot careers. So how do you prepare High school students to work in, or create, a field that does not exist?
By adding collaborations(协作) and creativity into the classroom, says Stephan Turnipseed. “At 2 years old , when you do the standard creativity test, we are all—almost 100 percent of us—creative geniuses,” he says.” By the end of the 12 year education only 3 percent score at that same level”.
Turning that trend around requires occasionally tossing aside some firm ideas in the educational world. “We should be stressing things like collaborative test taking where each member of the testing team has a role,” Tur nipseed says. “When I was a kid that was called cheating.”
Tasking teens to work in pairs to solve problems more closely mimics(模仿) real-world problem solving than traditional testing environments. It also improves students’ achievement s.
One high school English teacher found that her students scored 20 percentage points higher than those who had taken the same test in previous y ears. The difference: team testing. “Students were listening to one another, talking to their peers about test items, trying to decipher(解读) the correct answer and debating why an answer was or was not the best response,” the teacher notes.
Traditional testing methods are often criticized for promoting memorization o ver actual learning, but they can also stifle(扼杀)creativity. “We ingrain(植入) in our students and our children that there is only one right answer” he says, adding that while two plus two equals four in a normal math problem, in certain areas of physics, it does not. “That is probably not the best way forwa rd.”
Instead, teachers should create an environment where there are a variety of correct answers to
a given challenge. That could mean having students find a solution to an irrigation issue, or build a robot and then figure out how to make it go faster.
Giving high school students opportunities to create and solve problems and the freedom to find multiple solutions helps give classroom activities relevance and better prepares students for the workplace.
32. What an English teacher found in the scores shows ____________.
A. the importance of correct answers
B. the effectiveness of cooperation
C. the need to listen in the debate
D. the benefit of responding to questions
33.From what Stephan said in paragraph2 we can infer that ____________.
A. years of schooling limits creativity
B. a genius is creative even at 2 years old
C. your education decides your level of creativity
D. The standard creativity test changes at different levels
34. In the classroom, the activities should ___________.
A. be an opportunity to make inventions
B. be doable for students in every discipline
C. benefit students’ future careers
D. prepare students for an environment of freedom
35. Which of the following may be the main idea of the passage?
A. Work together in a workplace.
B. Throw away old ideas for schooling.
C. Create a new work center for students.
D. Develop creativity in high school.
