When most people learn English as a second language, they learn formal English. Unfortunately, learning it like this tends to make you feel distant and bored. The truth is, most people in English-speaking countries don’t speak to each other in such a formal way. They speak in a casual way to their friends and families. When speaking casually, people tend to use a lot of informal or colloquial words, and also shorten and connect their phrases. They say things like “Hey, what’s up?” or “Hey! Whatcha been dion’?” These expressions are both common andnatural, and make you seem like a native speaker. Using them may make people more interested in talking to you. This type of English is more like what you will hear in movies and TV shows. Speaking this way makes native speakers feel more relaxed and you will sound like a friendly person who speaks English well. First of all, living at the university gives me a sense of responsibility, of being on my own. My parents aren’t around to say, “No, you’re not going out tonight.”I decide everything for myself. Being around lots of friendly people is another aspect I like about university life. On my first say, when I arrived on campus, I was a bit confused about where I was going. An upperclassman noticed out I was looking for my dorm, he said, “Oh, just follow me; that’s where I’m going.” Now, I can really say that I feel comfortable in the dorm because there are so many friendly people around to talk with. Finally, I LOVE HA VING Fridays off; I would not be able to deal with five days of classes in a row. How did I do it in high school? I love sleeping in on Fridays. I guess I’m sort of a party animal, but it seems like I go out every Thursday night. It also seems like I don’t get home until early the next day1 My head hits the pillow and I don’t move until Friday afternoon.1.new and different2.on his own3. a bit confused4.talk with5.sleep inTask 2: Key to Learning EnglishI think one of the most important keys to learning English id to establish a regular study program, like planning a few minutes every morning around breakfast time. This idea may sound a little too simple to the learners, because they took English in high school for a quite a few years, but they didn’t become proficient speakers of the language. As a matter of fact I do not mean that we can become fluent speakers with just a few minutes here and there, but following a regular and consistent course of study can help us on the way to language mastery. In other words, people need to plan out their study by setting realistic and attainable goals from the beginning. Some people get caught up in the craze of learning the language on 30 days, only to give up when they can’t perform up to their expectations. And small steps little by little, are the key. For example, planning to learn to use them actively—is far better than learning 30 and forgetting them the next day.1.T2. F3.F4.F5.TTask 3: Listening EffectivelyThrough it is 50% of everyday communication, listening, it seems, is the least taught. Listening is more than just hearing: it requires understanding. In an educational setting, listening effectively is critical. Effective listening results in doing the right assignment, doing the assignment correctly, and taking notes effectively. Doing these activities well results in learning and, most of the time, good grades. In a professional setting, listening is also critical. When you receive an oral message, your response must be correct. If you fail to listen to customers or clients, you may lose their business, and your job! Ina personal setting, listening effectively deepens your relationships. When we listen to someone, we say “Y ou are important” without ever speaking a word. When we fail to listen, not only do we not receive the message, but we send the message that we are jus t plain dumb.1.B2.D3.A4.B5.D。

The two of them were busy with pencils and paper, checking their list of luggage when there was a ring at thedoor. Mrs. Jones went to open it, and saw a well-dressed middle-aged lady outside. The lady said that she lived in a flat beside theirs, and that she had come to welcome them to their new home.Mrs. Jones invited her in."I hope you'll excuse us for all this mess ," said Mrs. Jones, "We are trying...""Oh, that's quite all right," said the lady. "Do you know, in some parts of this town, neighborsare not at all friendly? There are some streets—and even some buildings—where people don't know their neighbors—not even their next-door ones. But in this building, everyone is a friendwith everybody else. We are one big, happy family. I'm sure you'll be happy here."The lady was greatly surprised when she visited the same flat the next time, because she found that a different man and a woman had moved in. On the lady's first visit, Mr. and Mrs. Jones had not the heart to tell her they were not the new owners of the flat, but the old owners, who had lived beside her for two years. All this time she had never visited or even noticed Mr. and Mrs. Jones, her next-door neighbors.21. Indifferent.D. Critical.Passage 2When I was in the 7th grade, I had a lot of trouble reading. My mother used to sit by my side, and explain each paragraph of each school reading assignment to me because I didn't understand what I was reading. She would have to read each paragraph to me. And then after each paragraph, she told me the general meaning of what we just read.In class, I tried to hide the fact that I couldn't read. My teachers gave us the last ten minutes of class to start our reading homework, and I would sit there for ten minutes staring at the page, pretending I was reading it. I remember a terrible feeling of not wanting to get into trouble for not being able to understand. I had to wait until I got home so my mother could explain it to me. How did I ever get into Cornell University?By the 8th grade I started understanding a little on my own, but I was reading at a very slow speed. I got hold of all the speed-reading books I could get my hands on. I read them all very slowly at the time. I even went out and took a course on speed-reading. Then I developed my own way which was easier and produced quicker results. I started practicing these techniques every day, and as I started to read faster, my understanding increased. I found that I stopped daydreaming and thinking about other things while I was reading, and started getting the larger meaning. I was reading faster and comprehending better.I found that when you read slowly, word-by-word, you get lost in the words, lose the bigger picture, and your comprehension drops. When you read faster, your comprehension goes up because instead of getting lost in the words, you see the general picture.26. Unit 1 Fresh StartSection AIn fact all the pieces of advice mentioned in the interview are very useful. But if I have to choose one as the most useful, I'd choose "keep a balance". When we were in high school, we spent almost all our time studying. There lacked a balance between social life and academic life in high school. It's important to keep a balance between life and work because it will give us a sound mind in a sound body. Now we have much more free time, so we can join student organizations or go to different activities.2.What advice did your parents give you before you left for college? Before I left for college my parents did have a talk with me. They told me how important college experience would be in my life. They told me about the opportunities that college education would open up to me. They told me to try to develop more interests and join some student clubs. The most impressive advice they gave me was that I should not only read books about my major; instead, they advised me to read as widely as possible. All these are very valuable pieces of advice.Reading comprehension1.According to the president, what did the parents remind their children to do before theyleft for college? The parents reminded their children to work hard and achieve the best they could.2.What does the president call on the students to do with the greatest resources oncampus? The president calls on the students to make the most of the great resources on campus: to explore new subjects, to meet fascinating people, and to pursue new passions.3.What does the president mean when he says "sample them widely" (Para. 5)?By saying "sample them widely", the president means students should try many different courses and try something new to see what it is like.4.What could be the consequences if you don't challenge yourself? If we don't challenge ourselves, we will not become broadly educated people, and we may not find the passion that will help us shape our future.5.What can you learn from the example of Vera Wang?We can learn from the example of Vera Wang that we should challenge ourselves, and by challenging ourselves, we are more likely to find an interest we don't know we have, and this interest may help us build a prosperous future.6.How should you deal with new and unpleasant experiences in college? We should not worry, and we should learn to face this new part of our life with enthusiasm. College experiences, pleasant or unpleasant, will provide us with valuable lessons and will enrich our life.7.How do you understand "Now it is your turn" (Para. 7)?The expression "Now it is your turn" means that now it is time for you to acquire knowledge and to pass it on.8.How does the president's speech impress you?The president's welcoming speech is really impressive. He mentions many important things about college life, the resources available on campus, as well as the opportunities we have and the responsibilities that we should take. The speech is very inspiring.1. What role do you think a university education will play in your life?A university education will play a very important role in my life, and it will benefit me in a number of ways. In the university I can acquire specialized knowledge about my major, and develop my critical thinking and research skills. I will have the opportunities to meet and share ideas with people of different minds. I can gain a broader view of the world by meeting people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. And I will start my life journey of self-discovery, self-improvement, and self-fulfillment.2.Do you think a university education can change a person's life? In what way and why? Yes, absolutely. With a university education, a person will have more freedom and therefore more choices. This education experience provides unlimited potential. Moreover, a university education provides the means for one to succeed. Not only will a person obtain knowledge and skills essential for his career development, but he will also develop an independent mind and be able to make right decisions on his own.3.How do you think about those successful people such as Bill Gates who dropped out ofuniversity?I admire those who dropped out of university and yet had made fame for themselves by achieving big goals. Some people use those successful college dropouts as counterexamples to show their belief that a person can succeed even without a university education. Chances are that most people do not have the same mind, talent, determination, or opportunities as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg did; therefore, they might not be able to achieve success without having a university education. In fact, a university education will equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills which will help them to succeed.4.How do you understand the statement "If you think education is expensive, tryignorance"?Nowadays education is getting more and more expensive, especially college education. And there are people who choose to give up education because of the high cost. But without education, one would not be able to acquire knowledge that an education will offer. In other words, they would be "ignorant". The result would be that "ignorant" people will suffer even more or pay even more for being so. It is true that education is expensive, but if you try "ignorance", the cost would be even higher.5.What are you going to do at university in order to sample widely and challenge yourself? To sample widely and challenge myself, I am going to venture out of my comfort zone and do what I have not had the courage to do. For instance, I will make friends with people from diversebackgrounds and cultures. I will take a swimming class and learn how to swim. I will attend lectures, join student clubs, and try all kinds of food. Most of all, I will do whatever it takes to make the most of the four years and try to become a well-rounded graduate.Words in use1.
