Since the 1880s, Michigan residents dreamed of a bridge that would span the 4-mile gap between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, an area that limited tourism in Mackinac Island and disturbed commerce in the remote Upper Peninsula. Because construction would be hard, with high winds and harsh winters, some engineers suggested a floating tunnel or a series of small bridges instead. But, by the 1940s, with lines for ferry boats sometimes stretching for 16 miles, the idea of one continuous span won out. And what a span it turned out to be. Five miles long, the "Mighty Mac," which opened to traffic on Nov. 1, 1957, was to become the world"s longest suspension bridge between cable anchorages. Even today, it remains the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere and the third-longest bridge in the world. Designed by engineer David B. Steinman, the bridge was built in just three years, on time and on budget. That was a remarkable feat in itself. But the challenges were so great—33 of the bridge"s 34 pieces had to be built under water—that five workers perished during construction. One man died diving, one fell in a caisson while welding, another drowned, and two fell from a catwalk. The bridge has seen many tragedies since. On Sept. 10, 1978, three National Guard officers in a private plane got lost in a thick fog and crashed into the cables of the north tower. In 1989, a woman was killed when gale force winds—and her excessive speed—lifted her 1987 Yugo into the air, sending it 150 feet into the water. And in 1997, a sport utility vehicle took the plunge. Although authorities believed the latter incident to have been a suicide, the bridge does not attract jumpers the way, for instance, the Golden Gate does. In 1977, Lawrence Rubin of the Mackinac Bridge Authority shared his theory on the lack of leapers with the Detroit News: "People who commit suicide like attention. But it"s peaceful here... you could jump off this bridge, and it might take years before anybody found out." The bridge authority acknowledges that the prospect of such excitement may be overwhelming for some, which is why it offers free escorts for gephyrobiacs—people with a fear of crossing bridges. Each year, hundreds of drivers take advantage of the service.(分数:10.00)(1).According to the first paragraph, Michigan"s Straits of Mackinac(分数:2.00)A.realized Michigan residents" dream to have a bridge.B.became a tourist attraction in Mackinac Island.C.depressed the ferry service in the State of Michigan.D.blocked the development of commerce in Upper Peninsula, √解析:解析:事实细节题。

The Little Prince is a beloved children's book that has captured the hearts of readers around the world. Written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, this timeless tale follows the story of a young prince who travels from planet to planet before landing on Earth and meeting a pilot stranded in the desert. As a fifth-grade student, I recently had the opportunity to read The Little Prince for the first time, and I must say that it was a truly enlightening experience. The book is filled with wisdom and profound insights that are both thought-provoking and heartwarming. One of the things that struck me the most about the story is the importance of looking beyond the surface and seeking to understand the deeper meaning behind things.Throughout his journey, the Little Prince encounters a variety of characters, each representing different aspects of human nature. From the vain and conceited rose to the lonely and misunderstood fox, each character teaches the Little Prince – and the reader – valuable lessons about love, friendship, and the true meaning of happiness. One of the most memorable scenes in the book is when the Little Prince meets the fox, who imparts his wisdom abouttaming and relationships. The fox explains that taming is a process that involves creating a bond with someone or something, and that the bonds we form are what make life meaningful. This lesson resonated with me on a personal level, as it reminded me of the importance of cultivating strong relationships with those around me.Another aspect of the book that I found particularly moving is the Little Prince's love for his rose. Despite her flaws and imperfections, the Little Prince's devotion to his rose is unwavering, and he is willing to go to great lengths to protect and care for her. This reminded me of the power of love and the importance of cherishing the people and things that are dear to us.Overall, reading The Little Prince has been a transformative experience for me. The book's timeless messages about love, friendship, and the pursuit of meaning have left a lasting impact on me, and I will carry its lessons with me for the rest of my life. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read this beautiful story, and I would highly recommend it to readers of all ages.。

Originally written in French by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, this book has become a beloved classic worldwide, with translations into over 300 languages. As a non-native English speaker, I initially found the book difficult to read due to its poetic and metaphorical language. However, as I progressed through the story, I began to understand its deeper meanings and value. The Little Prince is a story about a young boy who embarks on a journey from his home planet to explore different parts of the universe. Along the way, he meets various characters, including a rose, a fox, and a snake, who each impart important life lessons. One of the main themes of the book is the importance of having a childlike perspective on life. The Little Prince sees the world withwonder and curiosity, and he is not bound by the limitations and prejudices of adult society. We are reminded to embrace our inner child and not become too jaded or cynical as we grow older.Another theme of the book is the value of relationships. Throughout his travels, the Little Prince learns the importance of forming connections with others and cherishing those relationships. For example, the rose he meets on his home planet teaches him about love and loyalty, and he later forms a bond with the fox through mutual trust and understanding. As I read The Little Prince, I found myself reflecting on my own relationships and the way I view the world. The book encourages us to take a step back from our busy lives and appreciate the beauty and wonder around us. It also reminds us to treat others with kindness and respect, just as the Little Prince does with the people he meets on his journey. Finally, The Little Prince offers a valuable lesson on the impermanence of life. The Little Prince knows that he will eventually have to return to his home planet, but he cherishes the time he has spent exploring the universe. The book reminds us to appreciate the present and not take it for granted, as we never know when our time will be up.In conclusion, reading The Little Prince in English has been a meaningful and enriching experience for me.
The story begins with a pilot who has crash-landed in the Sahara Desert. As he tries to repair his plane, he meets the Little Prince, a young boy who claims to come from another planet. Intrigued by the Prince's stories of his travels and encounters with various characters, the pilot forms a bond with him and listens attentively to his tales.Through the Little Prince's experiences on different planets, we are introduced to a diverse cast of characters, each representing a different aspect of human nature. We meet the conceited man who seeks admiration but never finds true happiness, the king who rules over nothing but still believes himself to be important, and the businessman who obsessively counts stars but fail to appreciate their beauty. One of the most memorable encounters in the story is with the fox. The Little Prince learns the true meaning of friendship and love through his relationship with this wise and gentle creature. The fox imparts wisdom to the Prince, teaching him that "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye." This message resonates strongly, reminding us that true connections are formed through the heart, not just the physical appearance.Another significant aspect of The Little Prince is its exploration of the loss of childhood innocence as people grow older. As the Prince meets adults on his journey, he is disheartened by their lack of imagination and understanding. He realizes that most adults are consumed by mundane and materialistic concerns, and have lost touch with the purity and simplicity of childhood. The Little Prince also touches upon the themes of loneliness and longing. The Prince is lonely on his home planet, longing for someone to share his experiences with. Through his encounters with the pilot and other characters, we see how the longing for connection and understanding is universal, irrespective of age or background. The book's symbolism is also worth noting. The baobab tree serves as a powerful metaphor for the destructive nature of neglecting our problems. The Little Prince emphasizes the importance of addressing issues early and consistently, or they will grow to unmanageable proportions. The illustrations in The Little Prince, all created by Saint-Exupéry himself, add depth and beauty to the story. The delicate watercolor paintings capture the innocence and wonder of the Prince's journey, bringing the characters and landscapes to life.As I reflect on my reading of The Little Prince, I am struck by its underlying message of the importance of cherishing the simple things in life. In a world that often values material wealth and success above all else, this book serves as a poignant reminder to stop and appreciate the beauty around us. It teaches us to value love, friendship, and the enchantment of the human spirit. The Little Prince is a book that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. It's a story that touches the heart and soul, making us reflect on our own lives and the choices we make. It reminds us to never lose sight of the things that truly matter and to hold on to our childlike wonder and innocence. In conclusion, The Little Prince is a timeless and profound tale that deserves its status as a classic. Its beautiful prose, heartfelt message, and captivating illustrations make it a book that will continue to inspire and touch the hearts of readers for generations to come. It serves as a gentle reminder to always cherish the simple and pure aspects of life, and to never lose sight of what truly matters.。

The Wicked Prince-The Wicked Prince这篇小故事最初发表于1840年10月在哥本哈根出版的《沙龙》杂志上。
HERE lived once upon a time a wicked prince whose heart and mind were to set upon conquering all the countries of the world, and on frightening the people; he devastated their countries with fire and sword, and his soldiers trod down the crops in the fields and destroyed the peasants' huts by fire, so that the flames licked the green leaves off the branches, and the fruit hung dried up on the singed black trees. Many a poor mother fled, her naked baby in her arms, behind the still smoking walls of her cottage; but also there the soldiers followed her, and when they found her, she served as new nourishment to their diabolical enjoyments; demons could not possibly have done worse things than these soldiers! The prince was of opinion that all this was right, and that it was only the natural course which things ought to take. His power increased day by day, his name was feared by all, and fortune favoured his deeds. He brought enormous wealth home from the conquered towns, and gradually accumulated in his residence riches which could nowhere be equalled. He erected magnificent palaces, churches, and halls, and all who saw these splendid buildings and great treasures exclaimed admiringly: “What a mighty prince!” But they did not know what endless misery he had brought upon other countries, nor did they hear the sighs and lamentations which rose up from the débris of the destroyed cities. The prince often looked with delight upon his gold and his magnificent edifices, and thought, like the crowd: “What a mighty prince! But I must have more―much more. No power on earth must equal mine, far le ss exceed it.”He made war with all his neighbours, and defeated them. The conquered kings were chained up with golden fetters to his chariot when he drove through the streets of his city. These kings had to kneel at his and his courtiers' feet when they sat at table, and live on the morsels which they left. At last the prince had his own statue erected on the public places and fixed on the royal palaces; nay, he even wished it to be placed in the churches, on the altars, but in this the priests opposed him, saying: “Prince, you are mighty indeed, but God's power is much greater than yours; we dare not obey your orders.”“Well,” said the prince. “Then I will conquer God too.” And in his haughtiness and foolish presumption he ordered a magnificent ship to be constructed, with which he could sail through the air; it was gorgeously fitted out and of many colours; like the tail of a peacock, it was covered with thousands of eyes, but each eye was the barrel of a gun. The prince sat in the centre of the ship, and had only to touch a spring in order to make thousands of bullets fly out in all directions, while the guns wereat once loaded again. Hundreds of eagles were attached to this ship, and it rose with the swiftness of an arrow up towards the sun. The earth was soon left far below, and looked, with its mountains and woods, like a cornfield where the plough had made furrows which separated green meadows; soon it looked only like a map with indistinct lines upon it; and at last it entirely disappeared in mist and clouds. Higher and higher rose the eagles up into the air; then God sent one of his numberless angels against the ship. The wicked prince showered thousands of bullets upon him, but they rebounded from his shining wings and fell down like ordinary hailstones. One drop of blood, one single drop, came out of the white feathers of the angel's wings and fell upon the ship in which the prince sat, burnt into it, and weighed upon it like thousands of hundredweights, dragging it rapidly down to the earth again; the strong wings of the eagles gave way, the wind roared round the prince's head, and the clouds around―were they formed by the smoke rising up from the burnt cities?―took strange shapes, like crabs many, many miles long, which stretched their claws out after him, and rose up like enormous rocks, from which rolling masses dashed down, and became fire-spitting dragons. The prince was lying half-dead in his ship, when it sank at last with a terrible shock into the branches of a large tree in the wood.“I will conquer God!” said the prince. “I have sworn it: my will must be done!”And he spent seven years in the construction of wonderful ships to sail through the air, and had darts cast from the hardest steel to break the walls of heaven with. He gathered warriors from all countries, so many that when they were placed side by side they covered the space of several miles. They entered the shipsand the prince was approaching his own, when God sent a swarm of gnats―one swarm of little gnats. They buzzed round the p rince and stung his face and hands; angrily he drew his sword and brandished it, but he only touched the air and did not hit the gnats. Then he ordered his servants to bring costly coverings and wrap him in them, that the gnats might no longer be able to reach him. The servants carried out his orders, but one single gnat had placed itself inside one of the coverings, crept into the prince's ear and stung him. The place burnt like fire, and the poison entered into his blood. Mad with pain, he tore off the coverings and his clothes too, flinging them far away, and danced about before the eyes of his ferocious soldiers, who now mocked at him, the mad prince, who wished to make war with God, and was overcome by a single little gnat.

Reading ReportRecently, I have read the classical fairy tale: The Little Princess, a classical work which has influenced millions of people, written by the France writer Antoine deSaint-Exupery in 1942. I have read it many times, but I always have different feelings each time I read it.The author tells a story about a princess living on the planet B612. The princess had conflicts with its rose, so he leave his own planet, and visited various planets where he got acquainted with the King, the vain person, the alcoholic, the illuminator, and the geographer. He got acquainted with the author, the fox , the snake on the earth and found love. At last, the snake sacrificed its life to help the little princess go back to his hometown. When I first read this book I was just 12 years old. I was curious about the little princess’s experiences on the planets, such as the rose, the monkey bread tree, the sheep, the moving chair and the sunrises during one day. When I read this book again, I have already worked for many years. Being surroundedby the pressure from life and people, always made me feeling at sea. This time, I found the same characteristics between the characters in the book and the people I met in life. Living a happy and simple life every day, not being tied of the right, money, vanity and greed, is the real happiness.。
