For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.Your boss holds your future prospects in his hands. Some bosses are hard to get along with. Some have excellent qualifications but no idea when it comes to dealing with people. Of course, not all bosses are like that. The relationship you have with your boss can be a major factor in determining your rise up the career ladder. Your boss is not only your leader, he is also the person best equipped to help you do the job you are paid to do. He can inform you of company direction that may affect your professional development. Your boss also needs you to perform at your best in order to accomplish his objectives. He needs your feedback in order to provide realistic and useful reports to upper management. But how does this help you establish a meaningful working relationship with your boss? The key is communication. Learn and understand his goals and priorities(优先的事). Observe and understand your boss’s work style. If he has not been clear with his expectations, ask! Likewise, ask for feedback and accept criticism gracefully. And if he understands that you do not view your job as just something to fill the hours between 9 and 5, he may be more likely to help you. In short, getting along with your boss requires getting to know his likes and dislikes and learning to work with his personality and management style.1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that _____.A.bosses are hard to deal withB.bosses have good characterC.bosses determine your career futureD.bosses must have similar personality正确答案:C解析:根据题目要求定位到第一段。

My dad was the coach of my team, and my mom kept score. So my sister, not old enough to stay home alone, was forced to come to all my games. I remember looking toward the stands for my mother's approval and seeing my sister's face, confused. It was obvious that she wasn't excited, but she cheered along with the crowd anyway. On the car ride home, my parents and I would relive the game. My sister sat in the back seat with me in silence, not knowing how or when to enter the conversation. Often, she would say, “Good game, Brad.” I wo uld smile and thank her but never took it seriously. She couldn't possibly know whether I had played well or not.It wasn't until I reached high school that I realized how popular she was, and I was referred to as “Christie's little brother.” I played bask etball in high school, and although Christie wasn't forced to attend my games anymore, she still came to cheer me every week. In the last game of the last season, she came with a large group of friends. Printed on her shirt, in big bright red letters, were the words “BRAD'S SISTER.” Suddenly I was embarrassed, not for her presence, but for my previous attitude to her praise.Kicki left for college after that game. I finally have the remote control all to myself. However, watching TV alone has turned out to be boring. I went to visit her at college duringa weekend, and as I stood outside her dorm, waiting for her to come out, a friend of hers whom I didn't know walked past me and asked, “Hey, aren't you Christie's brother?” I smiled broadly and said proudly, “Yeah, I am. I'm Christie's brother.”4、How did Brad feel about being an only child when he was young?A.Boring.B.Awesome.C.Tough.D.Awful.5、Why did Christie go to Brad's games when he was in primary school?A.She hoped to know more about Brad.B. She was interested in basketball games.C.She was too young to be left alone at home.D. She wanted to spend more time with her family.6、Why did Brad feel embarrassed according to the last but one paragraph?A.He treated Christie's praise lightly before.B.He forgot Christie's presence at his last game.C. He saw the big bright red letters on Christi's shirt.D.He received unwanted attention from Christie's friends.7、What can be inferred about Christie?A.She was proud of Brad.B. Extremely high exposures to PFAS may also be linked to cancer.“PFAS do not degrade easily in the environment and are poisonous even in a very low concentration,” said Susie Dai, associate professor from Texas A&M. “They must be removed and destroyed to prevent human exposure and negative impacts on the ecosystem. PFAS are so stable and they can occur in water in a very low concentration and you have to concentrate them and then destroy them.”The only way to actually get rid of these “forever chemicals” is by burning them, which is a long and expensive process. But Texas A&M researchers have found a new way to use a plant-based material that adsorbs the pollutants. As explained by ScienceDirect, adsorption is “The use of solids for removing substances from either gas or liquid.” The adsorbent material is then consumed by microbial fungi. The team recently published their findings for the process framework, which they call RAPIMER, in Nature.“The plant's cell wall material serves as a framework to adsorb the PFAS,” Dai explained. “Then this material and the adsorbed chemical serve as food for a microbial fungus. Then it's gone, and you don't have the disposal problem.”This sustainable PFAS clean-up system could be mass-produced for commercial use, leading to a better way to remove these chemical pollutants from the environment. It could also come in handy as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers creating PFAS thresholds(阈值) to its water quality standards.8、What is mainly talked about in paragraph 2?A.PFAS's existing forms.B.PFAS's doubtful origins.C. PFAS's potential dangers.D.PFAS's wide applications.9、What did Susie Dai say about PFAS?A.They are unstable.B.They degrade easily in the environment.C.They survive longer in water than in the air.D. They are poisonous even in a low concentration.10、What happens after the plant-based material adsorbs the pollutants?A.The material gets eaten.B. The material becomes solid.C.The material falls into small pieces.D.The material goes on to adsorb fungi.11、What is the author's attitude towards the plant-based material?A.Indifferent.B.Worried.C.Positive.D.Reserved.ever a concern for growers of plants currently grown inside large greenhouses. Vegetables are increasingly being grown indoors, using an advanced form of growing called controlled environment agriculture, a method that has the potential to help feed the planet, even while it threatens to further warm it.Controlled environment agriculture has many advantages. Crops are not subject to unexpected extreme weather. Furthermore, these greenhouses can produce more food withfewer pesticides and less water. With computer-controlled temperatures and nutrients, the plants grow with less water and produce much higher yields. Above all, the produce can be bred for flavor, instead of for tolerance to heat, rain and long-distance transportation. The carbon footprint of any given greenhouse tomato can vary quite a bit depending on energy sources, surrounding temperatures and natural light. But various studies have estimated that, on average, the production of a pound of tomatoes in an American or northern European greenhouse releases 3 to 3.5 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere. That is about 6 times the caron footprint of a field tomato, even taking into account the emissions from refrigerated trucks that often transport field vegetables hundreds or even thousands of miles to reach consumers. Greenhouses, by contrast, can be built near major population centers.Nevertheless, in a rapidly warming world, should we be increasing agriculture's contribution by moving some of it i ndoors? “We have little choice,” say advocates. “With the global population expected to grow by 25 percent to nearly 10 billion people by 2050, food production will need to increase by 60 percent to 100 percent. With freshwater supplies and land suitable for farming decreasing, and droughts getting worse due to climate change, where will this additional food come from?”12、What does the underlined part “a big change” in paragraph 1 refer to?A.The rapid increase of population.B. The threatens of warming the planet.C.The way to deal with natural disasters.D. The tendency to grow vegetables indoors.13、What does controlled environment agriculture mainly focus on?A.Making crops taste good.B.Planting crops with less water.C.Growing crops in extreme weather.D.Transporting crops from a long distance.14、What do we know about American greenhouse tomatoes?A.They are not high-yielding crops.B.They are not really environmentally friendly.C.They are grown far from population centers.D.They are mainly exported to norther Europe.15、Which of the following statements may the advocates agree with?A. Greenhouse planting is a necessary temporizing measure.B. Greenhouse planting is tailored for small-population nations.C. Greenhouse planting can help spread the idea of healthy eating.D. Greenhouse planting should be stopped from warming the world.

But blood can only be stored by freezing for up to six weeks. “Because of that limitation, people have to continually donate blood to meet the needs. But also, in places where freezing may not be available, that can also be a challenge. It’s difficult to have blood available when needed.”“Thedisruptionsto regular blood donations due to COVID-19 have put stress on the blood supply, and the pandemic emphasizes the need for more reliable long-term storage methods.” UniversityofLouisvillebioengineer Jonathan Kopechek said.Kopechek’s team has developeda method of preserving blood so it can be stored in a dehydrated state at room temperature. They turned to an unusual preservative: a sugar called trehalose(海藻糖), which is a common ingredient in donuts... to help make them look fresh even when they mightbe months old, and you wouldn’t know the difference. The researchers chose trehalose because, in nature, it’s made by hardy animals like tardigrades and sea monkeys—aka brine shrimp—famous for their ability to survive dehydration. So these animals can dry out completely for a long period of time and then be rehydrated and resume normal function. First, the researchers had to get trehalose into blood cells. They used ultrasound(超声波)to drill temporary holes in the cell membranes—which let some trehalose get in. And they need to have sufficient levels of trehalose on both the inside and the outside of the cell in order to survive the dehydration and rehydration process. At that point, the blood could be dried and made into a powder. And then we can rehydrate the blood and have it return back to normal.“The technique could be ready for clinical test in three to five years. If successful, it could be used to create stores of dried blood in case of future pandemics or natural disasters. Maybe medicine bag on the Red Planet will include dried red blood cells.” Kopechek said.4. Why do people have to continually donate blood to meet the needs?A. Because blood donations aren’t popular.B. Because the blood needs can’t be met.C. Because blood storage by freezing has time limit.D. Because blood freezing is a challenge in many places.5. What does the underlined word “disruptions” in paragraph 2 mean?A. pauseB. damageC. endD. distribution6. According to the research of Kopechek’s team, what can we learn about?A. Blood can be preserved in a dehydrated state by freezing.B. Trehalose is only made by hardy animals like tardigrades.C. Trehalose can help make donuts look fresh for a long time.D. The technique of blood dehydration has been applied in clinical test.7. How did trehalose get into blood cell?A. By the process of dehydration and rehydration.B. By being dried and made into a power.C. By rehydrating the blood returning back to normal.D. By the temporary holes drilled by ultrasound.CEmojis are very popular among mobile phone and social media users. While there are emojis of almost every kind imaginable, from dinosaurs to joyful tears and eggplants, there is no emoji for forgiveness. Seeing the need to show understanding, aFinnish group decided it was time for a "forgiveness" emoji.Every year, the Unicode Consortium, which sets the standards, adds new emojis to the emoji keyboard on mobile phones and computers. In 2019, the Forgivemoji campaign was launched. Forgivemoji's site made an open call to the public to give their designs for a new forgiveness emoji, with the goal of presenting the symbol to the Unicode Consortium and getting it accepted by people.Tuomo Pesonen, communications director of the Unicode Consortium, explained why the forgiveness emoji isindispensablein today's world. “In our modern communication culture, emojis are an important way of expressing human feelings beyond words.” The campaign gained popularity, reaching over two million people around the world. They received many designs, including a bandaged heart, two holding hands, and people from different cultures hugging. After hundreds of people offered their ideas for this emoji, the winner was announced in February 2020. Former Finnish president Tarja Halonen was selected to choose the winner as she has been important in building bridges between people. The emoji that will be presented to the Unicode Consortium is an image of two handsgiving a thumbs-up symbol in front of a heart. If the Unicode Consortium accepts the design, it will become available to the public in late 2021.The Forgivemoji campaign goes far beyond having a strong influence on social media. The message of showing forgiveness and understanding is helpful for the world at large.8. What's the idea behind the Fogivemoji campaign?A. people develop pleasant habits.B. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneFrom the beginning rivers have played an important part in the life of man. Primitive man used rivers as a means of travel. In ancient time, man settled near rivers or on river banks and built up large empires and civilizations. Rome today still stands on both sides of the Tiber. The Menam runs through modern Bangkok, still serving as a great waterway for the transport of goods and people.Water is Nature‟s most precious gift to man. Man needs water to irrigate his crops, to cook and to wash. In some nations far and wide rivers mean life and wealth. The Irrawaddy, Nile, Ganges and a host of other rivers feed and clothe the nation around them. A shortage of water in heavily populated agricultural areas will cause great hardship and starvation as crops fail.Water is also a source of energy and power. Man constructs huge dams across rivers to control the water for irrigation and obtain the energy needed to drive generators. The electrical power is then channeled to homes, cities, factories, television stations and the military.Man uses billions of litres of water each day. His main source of water comes from reservoirs which in turn obtain their water from the rivers.1. Rivers have been important to man _____.A. since Rome timesB. since many years agoC. since a few hundred years agoD. for a very long time2. In ancient times empires and civilizations grew up near _____.A. the TiberB. the MenamC. riversD. the Irrawaddy3. Rivers bring _____.A. life and wealthB. the most precious giftsC. food and clothesD. crops4. A heavily populated agricultural area is one where _____.A. there is a shortage of waterB. there are huge damsC. there are hardship and starvationD. there are too many farmers living close to one another5. Energy is obtained from rivers by _____.A. controlling the waterB. building dams across themC. building bridgesD. driving generatorsPassage TwoIn the year following the Civil War, businesses began to form monopolies(垄断) . A monopoly is a business or corporation that has exclusive control over a certain market. This means that a monopoly has no competitors. In business, competition among businesses tends to keep the prices of products down. Since they had no competitors, monopolies, depending on how essential their product was, could charge as much as they wanted for their product. As more and more monopolies began to appear, some Americans began to wonder how these big companies could easily drive their competitors out of business. One person who was especially interested in the practices of these monopolies was a journalist named Ida Tarbell.During the early 1900‟s, Ida Tarbell‟s articles took on such big corporations as the Standard Oil Trust Company. She described the methods that these monopolies would use to drive rival companies out of business. For example, she described how big companies would make deals with railroad companies. According to the terms of these deals, the railroad companies would charge the big companies lower rates to transport goods. Smaller companies who competed with the big companies would be charged the regular rate, which was much higher.6. What is the passage mainly concerned with?A. The definition of monopoliesB. The success of monopolies.C. The reasons for the success of monopolies.D. Both B) and C)7. A monopoly is a business that controls the market, ______.A. beating all other competitorsB. including only a few competitorsC. excluding many rivalsD. none of the above8. If a monopoly wants to charge as much as possible, ______.A. it must have competitorsB. it must be a big businessC. its products must be essential to peopleD. its products must be of high quality9. Tarbell‟s arti cles are mainly concerned with______.A. the competitive power of big companiesB. the competitive methods by big companiesC. the dirty deals between big and small companiesD. the dirty deals between big companies and railroad companies10. The word “terms” in Paragraph 4 means______.A. conditionsB. semestersC. periods of timeD. moneyPassage Three“It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good.” These are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework. That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation. Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we‟ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students —“so passive” —and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children‟s passivity; “We‟re not training kids to work any more.” says Klompus. “We‟re talking about a generation of kids who‟ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying go look it up, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It‟s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It‟s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it‟s for their own good, It‟s time start telling them no again.11. By “permissive period of education” the author means an age ______.A. when young children are denied admittance to grade schoolsB. when vocational subjects are taught in schoolsC. when children are entitled to adult educationD. when children are permitted to act of their own free will12. We learn from the passage that the author‟s mother used to attach importanc e to_____.A. disciplineB. creativityC. school educationD. individual work13. According to the passage, children are growing inactive in study mainly because _____.A. they watch TV too oftenB. their parents leave them aloneC. their teachers are strict with themD. they tale on too many duties14. To today‟s kids as described in this passage, _____.A. it is easier to give a negative reply than to give a positive replyB. it is easier to give a positive reply than to give a negative replyC. neither is easy—to say yes or to say noD. neither is no easy job—to say yes or to say no15. The main idea of this passage is that _____.A. parents should set a good example for their kidsB. kids should have more activities outside campusC. educators should not he so permissiveD. it is time to be strict with our childrenPassage FourWe find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把…… It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual (智力)ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.16. In the passage the author‟s attitude towards …mixed-ability teaching‟ is _________A. criticalB. questioningC. approvingD. objective17. By …held back‟ (Line 1) the author means ________A. made to remain in the same classesB. forced to study in the lower classesC. drawn to their studiesD. prevented from advancing.18. The author argues that a teacher‟s chief concern should be the development of the student's ___A. personal qualities and social skillsB. total personalityC. learning ability and communicative skillsD. intellectual ability19. Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph?A. Group work gives pupils the opportunity to learn to work together with others.B. Pupils also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.C. Group work provides pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capableorganizers.D. Pupils also learn how to participate in teaching activities.20. The author‟s purpose of writing this passage is to ________A. argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same classB. recommend pair work and group work for classroom activitiesC. offer advice on the proper use of the libraryD. emphasize the importance of appropriate formal classroom teaching Passage FiveIf you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety. The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge. The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly. With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?21. While taking a taxi in Finland, _____A. a passenger can go anywhere without having to pay the driverB. a passenger pays two US dollars for a taxi rideC. a passenger can never be turned down by the taxi driver wherever he wants togoD. a passenger needs to provide good faith demonstration before they leavewithout paying22. We know from the passage that big hotels in Finland_____A. provide meal for only those who live in the hotelsB. provide meals for any dinersC. provide free wine and charge for foodD. are mostly poorly managed23. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. The workers in Finland are paid by the hour.B. The bosses in Finland are too busy to check the working hours of theiremployees.C. The workers are always honest with their working hours.D. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about thepay.24. The word “those” in the last paragraph probably refers to _____A. people who often take taxisB. people who often have meals in big hotelsC. people who are dishonestD. people who are worthy of trust25. It can be concluded that _____A. Finnish people aren‟t smart enough in daily lifeB. Finland has been a good place for cheatsC. the Finnish society is of very high moral levelD. all the Finns are richPassage SixUS crude futures dropped briefly below the $50-a-barrel level yesterday for the first time in seven weeks, but later recovered to post gains as the market appeared unwilling to let prices fall below the key psychological level in spite of rising crude inventories in the US and reports of weakening demand growth. The US benchmark(基准, 参照点)crude futures, West Texas Intermediate for May delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange, fell to $49.75 a barrel, its lowest level since February 22. The contract recovered in early afternoon New York trade to $50.45, a rise of 23 cents on the day.May Brent on the International Petroleum Exchange in London remained above $50 a barrel by late trading in London when it was priced 9 cents higher at $50.57 a barrel. With the May contract expiring at the close of trade yesterday, more action was seen in the June Brent contract, which was 30 cents higher at $51.68 a barrel.Brent prices are likely to remain above WTI (West Texas Intermediate) prices in coming days, a feat that last occurred in the spring of 2002. Some traders say this is a sign of strong Asian demand, which in turn could see US oil imports ease.Gold prices fell sharply on a stronger dollar. Bullion(金条) was quoted at $423.10/$423.85 a troy(金衡制) ounce in late London trade, down from the late quote of $429.00/$429.80 in New York on Wednesday.Gold prices were also unsettled(扰乱) by comments from Rogdrigo Rato, the head of the International Monetary Fund, who said selling some of the IMF‟s gold was better than revaluing its 3,217 tonnes of gold. However, Mr Rato said care should be taken not to upset the bullion markets, and suggested the IMF voluntarily join the central bank gold agreement, which is a pact between European central banks that limit their gold sales each year. He added that the final decision was to be made by the IMF‟s board of directors.Other precious metals were steady with platinum(白金, 铂) trading at $860 a troy ounce and palladium(钯) unchanged at $ 196 a troy ounce.GFMS, a precious metals consultancy, said platinum prices might rise as high as $1,000 an ounce this year because car companies and other users have limited inventory to use in case of any supply disruption. This prediction was more bullish than the forecast made by Virtual Metals, a metals consultancy, which estimates platinum prices to remain between $800 and $900 an ounce this year.GFMS said prices for palladium, which is also used by car companies and jewellers, will range from $170 to $240 an ounce. Virtual Metals went for a wider range of $135 to $275 an ounce this year.Meanwhile, copper fell $51 to $3,142 a tonne in London.26.At what price did US crude futures close that day?A.
