In 1948, Ladies Home Journal selected our family for its “How America Lives” feature. The reporter and photographer arrived at the end of May and followed all of us (Mom, Dad, my brother, sister and me) for a week, recording our every move. Everyone was pretty excited about it, especially in our town of 6,000, where things like this just didn’t happen.
Since the article would be published in early December, we had to pretend it was already autumn. The reporter asked mom to cook and serve a complete Thanksgiving meal. She told Mom to “go all out” and use her best holiday dishes for the feast.
Mom’s face fell. She didn’t want to admit that our best dishes weren’t exactly the best, let alone suitable for a national magazine. While the reporter continued with her interview, the photographer quietly excused himself and slipped away for over an hour. When he came back, he had a large box, which he placed on the floor, telling Mom to open it.
Her mouth wide open, her face lit up as if it was Christmas. Inside was a beautiful set of 12 dishes, each painted with patterns of flowers and golden brims (金边), made by the Homer Laughlin China Co. There was even a soup bowl, something we kids had never seen before. Mom was near tears as she lovingly handled each piece.
When it came time to serve dinner, Mom walked slowly from the kitchen with the lovely new plate, which contained a small “turkey” (in reality, a large chicken).
From that day on, Mom made sure they never saw the light of day unless it was a major event, though they were a must at every Thanksgiving.
I carry on the tradition, using the dishes for our Thanksgiving feast. But I serve a real turkey,

Brushing your teeth effectively lowers your chances of getting a host of chronic diseases, as well as keeping your teeth and gums (牙龈) healthy. But the majority of us are doing it wrong.
In Sweden, one study found as few as one in 10 people practice the best brushing technique. The British health insurer Bupa found that almost half of respondents did not know how to brush their teeth properly in a survey of 2,000 people in the UK.
So what exactly are most of us getting wrong, and how can we change our routine to make sure we brush our teeth effectively? Here’s how to properly brush your teeth, according to experts.
“Lots of patients understand that what they need to do is remove food remains,” says Josefine Hirschfeld, associate professor and specialist in restorative dentistry at the University of Birmingham in the UK. “That is only partially true. It’s much more important to remove bacteria from the teeth.” These bacteria and other microorganisms grow inside everyone’s mouth, and form a sticky biofilm commonly known as dental plaque (牙菌斑). It is made up of around 700 different species of bacteria, the second-greatest diversity in the human body after the gut, as well as a host of fungi and viruses. “They are living in the sticky film stuck to the teeth and also to the soft tissues,” says Hirschfeld. “This sticky film can't be easily rinsed off — it really needs to be manually cleaned.”
The most important place to remove it from is not in fact the teeth, but the gum. This is where microbes are best able to sink the gum tissue and do damage to teeth. In fact, “brushing your teeth” is something of a misnomer. “Think of brushing your gum, rather than the teeth themselves,” says Hirschfeld. “The teeth will then be brushed automatically.”
Brushing too hard, especially with a firmer-bristled brush, can cause injury to the gums. Small tears in the soft tissue caused by overzealous brushing are an opportunity for bacteria to enter the bloodstream. And grating the brush’s bristles over the enamel can wear tiny grooves in the tooth, which add up to significant erosion over time.
8.When brushing teeth most people’s practices are __________.
A.healthy B.effective C.faulty D.uncertain
9.The majority of patients hold the view that _________.
A.They are practicing the best brushing skills
B.Bacteria and microorganisms are not common inside their mouths
C.It’s the most important to remove the sticky film from the gum
D.The aim of brushing teeth is to remove food remains
10.What does the underlined word “overzealous” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Attentive.B.Overdone.C.Overlooked.D.Slight.
11.What should we bear in mind so as to brush our teeth appropriately?
A.When our gum is brushed, our teeth is cleaned together.
B.It’s much more important to remove food remains from the teeth .
C.The greater care we take to brush our teeth, the healthier the teeth will be.
D.Dental plaque containing species of bacteria only exists on teeth.
What defines us? If pressed, I would answer that if there is any part of me that sits at my core, then surely it must be my moral center, my deep-seated sense of right and wrong.
And I often feel that I’m a slightly different person in each language I speak — more determined in English, more relaxed in French, and more emotional in Czech. Is it possible that, along with these differences, my moral guidelines also point in somewhat different directions depending on the language I’m using?
In a research led by Albert Costa, volunteers were presented with a moral dilemma known
as the “train problem”: Imagine that a train is charging at five people standing on the track, unable to move. The only way to stop the train and spare the five people is push another stranger off a footbridge into its path. Costa and his colleagues found that posing the dilemma in a language that volunteers had learned as foreign tongue dramatically increased their willingness to push the sacrificial person off the footbridge, from fewer than 20% respondents using their native language to about 50% of those using the foreign one.
In another research conducted by Janet Greipel, volunteers read acts that many people find immoral, such as stories where someone cooked and ate his dog after it had been Keadby car. Those who read the stories in a foreign language perceived these actions less wrong than those who read them in their native tongue.
The difference in this judgment comes down to two separate and competing thinking patterns — one of these, a quick and direct feeling, and the other, careful deliberation about the greatest good for the largest number. When we use a foreign language, we unconsciously sink into the more deliberate mode simply because the effort of operating in our no-native language activates our cognitive system. This is similar to findings that reading math problems in a hard-to-read typeface (字体) makes people less likely to make careless mistakes.
12.What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A.He invests time in studying language.B.He perceives languages differ slightly.
C.He ignores the role of moral concepts.D.He thinks languages relate to morals. 13.How did the author prove his viewpoint?
A.By carefully citing examples.B.By collecting and listing data.
C.By conducting experiments.D.By analyzing people’s habits.
14.Why are “math problems” mentioned?
A.To justify a thinking pattern.B.To present a new finding.
C.To clarify the cognitive system.D.To warn against making mistakes. 15.What’s a suitable title for the passage?
A.Morality. The Core of People B.Languages: Insights into Judgments
C.Languages: A Shaping Power to Morality D.Morality: A New Way to Learn

More parental investment; slower children’s growth
Are teenagers less likely to participate in activities associated with adulthood because they’re busier with homework and extracurricular activities? Researchers found that time spent on homework and extracurricular activities has declined among 10th graders. It’s remained relatively steady among 12th graders. 16 This might account for some of the changes. In fact, one documentary labeled today’s teens as “screenagers”. Greater parental investment leads to teens growing up more slowly because parents supervise children and teens more carefully and organize their activities.
The study researchers also found an association between a slower developmental trajectory and smaller family size, higher parental age at first birth, and higher median income. With fewer children and more money, parents can invest more time and resources in their kids. 17 There are also economic factors. With shifts in the economy, more people go to college and are dependent on their parents for longer. 18 18-to 29-years-olds spend more time getting educated, marrying later, and having children later than previous generations.
19 On the upside, teens are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. They’re more likely to wait until they’re ready to participate in adult activities. 20 Today’s students may be sharp academically, but they often have trouble with basics like time management, making their own decisions and leading independent lives.
A.There are benefits and drawbacks to the decline in adult activities among adolescents.
B.It helps children enjoy a life with more material richness.
C.On the other hand, Internet usage has increased.
D.This may allow them to follow a slower developmental path.
E.On the downside, it poses an obstacle to teens’ all-round deveolopment.
F.More money is needed to cover their education.
G.That also gives rise to more careful parenting with the idea that education will last longer.

No one knows exactly whether they liked it better in spring or in winter. They used to pretend that they were travelers exploring a new country with lush vegetation (茂盛的草木) and bright yellow daffodils (水仙花) dotting the field, and would drop leaves on the road that they might find their way back again. Everything seemed amazing and appealing.
When the ice was thick and firm, they went across the pond. But their mother did not like to have them do this unless someone was with them.
“Don’t go across the pond today, children,” she said, as she kissed them and bade them goodbye one morning. “It is beginning to melt. It can be dangerous.”
“All right, mother,” said David, though not very good-naturedly, for he was very fond of running and sliding on the ice.
When they came to the pond, the ice looked hard and safe. “There,” said he to his sister, “I knew it hadn’t melted any. Mother is always afraid we shall be drowned. Come along, and we will
have a good time sliding. The school bell will not ring for an hour at least.”
“But you promised mother,” said Susan.
“No, I didn’t. I only said ‘All right,’ and it is all right,” said David, holding his head high.
“Oh, well, I didn’t say anything; so I can do as I like,” said Susan. So, they stepped on the ice without any delay, and started to go across the pond merrily. They had not gone far before the ice gave way, and they fell into the chilly water all at once.
“Help! Help!” they both cried for help in panic.
