梵谷的病一直是後世醫學家感興趣的題目。
有人認為他患的是躁鬱症,有人認為是苦艾酒或梅毒引起的器質性精神病,德國著名的精神醫學家及哲學家亞斯培則認為是精神分裂症。

但和典型精神分裂不同的是,梵谷的精神異常是陣發性的,發作的候很亂,未發作時很好。
而且他的腦筋和作事能力並沒有退化現像精神分裂病人生活功能會變差。
因此有日本學者認為他屬於「非典型性精神病」,如美國馬里蘭大學孟羅教授所定義的「陣發性精神異常」。
