AIncluding the following food or fruit in your breakfast makes you healthier and full of energy.Grapefruit“Even if you changed nothing else about your diet, eating half a grapefruit before each meal may help you lose up to a pound a week,” says Patricia Bannan, author of Eat Right When the Time Is Right. “Researchers found that when obese people ate half a grapefruit before each meal, they dropped an average of 3.5 pounds over 12 weeks,” she says.Tart CherryTart cherries have been shown to benefit heart health as well as body weight in a study on obese rats. A 12-week study by the University of Michigan found that rats fed tart cherries showed a 9 percent belly fat reduction. Moreover, the researchers noted that the cherry consumption had great ability to alter the expression of fat genes. Enjoy them during breakfast to kick your morning off right.Sweet PotatoSweet potatoes are packed with nutrients and can help you burn fat. They are high in fiber and have a low glycemic index (血糖指数), which means they are absorbed slowly and keep you feeling full longer. Min Chen likes to use them to whip up a sweet potato hash. “I love any kind of this dish because it provides rich vitamins, minerals and fiber. It is very filling, which helps keep appetite and portions under control as the day goes on,” she says.Bell PepperGreen, red or yellow, fresh or frozen, peppers are never a bad companion for your eggs. Thanks to their high vitamin C content, eating them can help burn stored fat. Studies also indicate that Vitamin C helps muscles processa fatty acid called carnitine that’s essential to muscle growth and recovery.1. Which food or fruit is beneficial to the patients who suffer from heart diseases?A. Grapefruit.B. Sweet potato.C. Tart cherry.D. Bell pepper.2. What benefit do these food and fruit have in common?A. Making people live longer.B. Making muscles grow strong.C. Helping control glycemic index.D. Helping people lose weight.3. In which part of a newspaper can you read the text?A. Education.B. Health.C. Agriculture.D. Technology.BMost people think their time problems are outer, and that they are caused by telephones, meetings, visitors, and delayed information or decisions. Although these problems often have a bad effect on us, as people call or drop in, we usually contribute to them, we fail to have calls screened by a skillful secretary or assistant, or we leave our door open, actually assuring constant interruptions. In almost all cases, it is possible to control. If not controlled, it usually can cause problems, such as, slowness and indecision, lack of self-discipline, the inability to delegate, or the tendency to fight fires, to act without thinking, and to jump from task to task without finishing any of them.Time is constant and it cannot be changed. The clock cannot be slowed down or sped up. Thus we cannot manage time itself. We can only manage our activities with respect to time. The same skills are needed as those used in managing others—the abilities to plan, organize, delegate, direct, and control. Time management is simply self-management. It is impossible to be effective in any position without controlling one’s time effectively.Successful time management does not mean working harder, but working smarter. All kinds of management skills must be used in the home and office to get most value from time. You must think ahead about what to do, making it get maximum results in the shortest possible period.4. According to the writer, time problems ________.A. are caused by telephones, meetings and visitorsB. are caused by delayed information or decisionsC. can be solved by self-managementD. can’t be controlled5. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the problems caused by poor time management?A. Slowness and indecision.B. Lack of self-discipline.C. Jumping from task to task without finishing any of them.D. Working hard all the time.6. It can be concluded from the passage that the abilities to plan, organize, delegate, direct and control should ________.A. be used in managing others’ activitiesB. be used in managing one’s own activitiesC. not be used in time managementD. be used in managing both others’ and one’s own activitiesCWhat do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common? That’s the placeswhere students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently. The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning.A strong body makes the mind strong. It turns out Jefferson was on to something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn’t exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity. But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight—like walking or running—may reduce the risk of osteoporosis (骨质疏松) later in life. You’ll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.7. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________.A. a lot of students like to read while eatingB. dining halls can also be used to do exerciseC. study and exercise burn the same amount of energyD. many students don’t pay enough attention to exercise8. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Jefferson’s statement made sense.B. Jefferson was very fond of exercise.C. Jefferson was on the way to doing exercise.D. Jefferson increased the importance of exercise.9. What can we infer from the text?A. We must exercise at least two hours every day.B. Those who like to exercise won’t suffer any illness.C. We must exercise regularly if we want to enjoy the benefits.D. Actually exercise can replace doctors in treating serious diseases.10. What’s mainly talked about in the text?A. The importance of exercise.B. How to choose a suitable sport.C. How to keep healthy by exercising.D. The link between exercise and study.二、(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIt's 5: 00 in the morning when the alarm (闹钟)rings in my ears. I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD, Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. Its not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmothers chocolate cake. Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century. In thecourse of his work, he cooperated with famous men of science like Isaac Newton, and the great architect Christopher Wren.Hooke's early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered Westminster School and from there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skills at designing experiments and inventing instruments. In 1662, he was named Curator of Experiments at the newly formed Royal Society of London — meaning that he was responsible for demonstrating (展示) new experiments at the society's weekly meetings. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!Watching living things through a microscope was one of his favourite pastimes. He invented a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木塞) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. There were cells —the smallest units of life. In fact, it was Hooke who invented the term “cell” as the box-like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of some place.Another achievement of Hooke's was his book Micrographia, which introduced the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the things he saw under the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity, light and combustion (燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theories on these phenomena.Hooke made a valuable contribution to astronomy, too. A crater (坑) on the moon is named after him in honour of his services to this branch of science.1.Why did Hooke accept the job as Curator of Experiments?A.He was good at designing experiments.B.His family needed his support.C.He wanted to please the famous scientists in England.D.His parents couldn't afford his education.2.What does the underlined word “pastimes” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Jobs. B.Experiments.C.Hobbies. D.Structures.3.What can we learn from the text?A.Hooke went to Oxford in 1662.B.Hooke was well paid in the Royal Society of London.C.Hooke made a contribution to medicine.D.Hooke's book Micrographia might have helped Newton.4.What is the last paragraph to prove?A.Hooke was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century.B.Hooke was good at making discoveries.C.Hooke's contributions were not limited to one field.D.Hooke was one of the greatest astronomers.BParents often put their own relationship on the back burner to concentrate on their children, but a new study shows that when spouses (配偶) love each other, their children stay in school longer and marry later in life.Research about how the affection between parents shapes their children's long-term life outcomes is rare because the data demands are high. This study uses unique data from families in Nepal to provide new evidence. The study, co-authored by researchers at the University of Michigan and McGill University in Quebec, was published in the journal Demography.“In this study, we see that parents' emotional connection to each ot her affects child growth so much that it shapes their children's future,” said coauthor and UM Institute for Social Research researcher William Axinn. “The fact that we found these kinds of things in Nepal moves us to step closer to evidence that these things are universal.”The study uses data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study in Nepal. The survey was launched in 1995, and collected information from 151 neighborhoods in the Western Chitwan Valley. Married couples were interviewed at the same time but separately, and were asked to assess the level of affection they had for their partner. The spouses answered “How much do you love your husband/wife, very much, some, a little, or not at all?”The researchers then followed the children of these parents for 12 years to document their education and marital (婚姻的) behavior. They found that the children of the parents who reported they loved each other either “some” or “very much” stayed in school longer and married later.“Family isn't just another institution. It's not like a school. It is this place where we also have emotions and feelings,” said lead author Sarah Brauner-Otto, director of the Centre on Population Dynamics at McGill University. The researchers say that their next important question will be to identify why parental love impacts children in this way.5.Why is the research rarely done about the influence of parents' love on children's lives?A.Because few scientists show passion.B.Because the data are demanding.C.Because evidence is hard to collect.D.Because parents sometimes don't tell the truth.6.What does the underlined word “universal” in the th ird Paragraph mean?A.Reasonable. B.Scientific.C.Worldwide. D.Acceptable.7.What can be learned about the study from Paragraph 4?A.It started in the 19th century.B.It used information from 151 western countries.C.Couples were interviewed together.D.Couples needed to make an assessment of their closeness degree.8.Which of the following will Sarah Brauner-Otto agree with?A.Family is like a school.B.Family really matters.C.Home is the best place.D.All happy families are alike.Ⅱ.完形填空A New York woman is earning plenty of praise online after she wrote a message offering to help her elderly neighbors.Maggie Connolly, who lives in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens neighborhood, __1__ her handwritten letter __2__ several grocery stores in her community were short of supplies, according to Fox News. The letter, which is __3__ to “elderly neighbors and those with poor health”,includes Connolly's email address and an offer to help those __4__ people.Connolly's neighbor reposted an image of the letter, after which it was __5__ by several popular online accounts. Just then the wind started and was blowing across the sand. My Captain Allan saw some swimmers in trouble, telling me to go and help. And I'm just 15 years old. It was going to be a memorable day. When I got to the swimmers, I realized there were three people in trouble. All were teenagers, three boys. I was a little scared (害怕) because they were older than me. All the thoughts of people almost drowning their rescuers that we learned in training came flooding back to me. Often when a swimmer is in trouble and when you go to assist them, they do whatever they can to get out of the water—including climbing on top of you—when they are in panic.I yelled out to the boy close to me, telling him that I was a qualified surf lifesaver. “Do you need my help?”I shouted, thinking they might not want me because they might think I was too young or not strong enough to save them. “Yes, please!” was their immediate response. That put my mind at ease—I knew it didn't matter to them who was rescuing them. I was a surf lifesaver and I was going to get them back to shore.I signaled to shore that I needed assistance, and two other lifesavers came out. Together we got the three tired and panicked swimmers back to shore. It was a pretty amazing feeling. On that day, I was just so proud to be a surf lifesaver.21.When did the wind start and was blowing across the sand?A.In the morning.B.At noon.C.Late in the afternoon.D.At night.22.What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.The author was strong enough.B.The three swimmers needed his help.C.The author could turn to others for aid.D.The three swimmers were not so nervous.23.What do we know about the author?A.He and the other two lifesavers saved three little boys’ lives.B.He was almost drowned while rescuing the three teenagers.C.He would receive training about how to save drowning people.D.He and his family had a good time enjoying the sun and surf.24.The passage tells us that ________.A.it was cloudy for most time of the dayB.Allan was the first to go and assist the swimmersC.the three people in trouble were older than the authorD.the author was not so good at rescuing drowning people答案:21.解析:细节理解题。

AYour body, which has close relations with the food you eat, is the most important thing you own. So it needs proper treatment and proper nourishment(营养). The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctors away.” is not as silly as some people think. The body needs fruits and vegetables because they contain vitamin C.Many people take extra vitamins in pill form (片剂), believing that this will make them healthy. But a good diet is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. The body does not need or use extra vitamins. So why waste money on them?In the modern Western world, many people are too busy to bother about eating properly. They throw anything into their stomachs, eating hurriedly and carelessly. The list of illnesses caused or made worse by bad eating habits is frightening.【语篇解读】健康的饮食对我们的身体健康有很大的好处,所以我们一定要注意自己的饮食习惯。
