Gone was my father's critical(挑剔的)air and strict rules.Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years,I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years,I'm at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing,I'm delighted with my new friend. My dad,in his new home in Arizona,is back to me from where he is.5.Why did the author feel bad about her father as a young adult?A.He was silent most of the time.B.He was too proud of himself.C.He did not love his children.D.He expected too much of her.6.When the author went out with her father on weekends, she would feel_______ . Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.Opposite to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.9.During the test, those who were tested were given ________.A.different breakfast or none B.very rich breakfastC.little food for breakfast D.no breakfast at all10.According to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ___________.A.he will fall illB.his mind will work more slowlyC.he will not make progress in his studyD.he will fail to listen to his teacher11.The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast, you will ______.A.be healthier B.not lose weightC.lose weight D.gain a lot of weight12.Which of the following is Not True according to the passage?A.Poor breakfasts affect those who work with brains.B.Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.C.Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.D.Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight losing.School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the USA.That’s no surprise , because they offer many benefits. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule ----- wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers(阻碍); school uniforms tear those barriers down. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's “creativity”. First, as noted above , the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality(个性). They just copy their classmates . Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and math; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.As in other places , uniforms remind the wearers of their purpose and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol(象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearers meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.13.In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means ____________ .A.tasks B.messagesC.differences D.advantages14.Some parents are against school uniforms because _______________ .A.they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms.B.they believe that uniforms will make students less creativeC.they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriersD.they think that school uniforms are too popular15.From the passage we learn that uniforms in general _____________ .A.prevent the wearers from being laughed at.B.help the wearers keep their duties in mind.C.are seen as a symbol of power.D.help to create social barriers二、七选五Some people are naturally better than others at social activities. There are the lucky few that draw people to them without any effort. 16.Put yourself at ease and remember these tips:Smile!A smile is understood in any culture and any age as a sign of friendship. So go ahead! It will put the other person at ease. You will seem approachable and happy. 17.Make eye contact.Good eye contact engages the other person to you. When you are introduced to someone, shake their hands and repeat their names.18.Making eye contact shows you have confidence and shows you are interested in the other person.19.Having a trusted friend next to you makes it less frightening to walk into a room full of people. But remember that even if you walk in as a pair,it doesn't mean you just stick together the whole time. The point in a social gathering is you make friends with other people.Go to social settings with a shared interest. For example joining an art class automatically puts you in a setting with other people you already have a common interest in. 20.A.Go with friends.B.Ask the other person questions.C.That will help you remember their names.D.This is the worst impression to make in any setting.E.It will let the other person know that you are safe to talk to.F.But for most of us,we feel shy and awkward in social activities.G.You now have something to talk about and work it from there.三、完形填空I never forget the single act of kindness that changed my life over 25 years ago. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for youinstead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.Open the curtains and turn on the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(自觉)when they're in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn't have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites(食欲). In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room ate 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it's time to repaint, go blue.Don't forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you're at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake jumps by 14 percent. And we'll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.(1)The text is especially helpful for those who care about ________.A.their home comfortsB.house buyingC.their body shapeD.healthy diets(2)A home environment in blue can help people ________.A.digest food betterB.reduce food intakeC.burn more caloriesD.regain their appetites(3)What are people advised to do at mealtimes?e smaller spoons.B.Play fast music.C.Eat quickly.D.Turn down the lights.4.In times of economic crisis(危机), Americans turn to their families for support. If the Great Depression(经济大萧条)is any guide, we may see a drop in our sky-high divorce rate. But this won't necessarily represent an increase in happy marriages, nor is the trend likely to last. In the long run. theDepression weakened American families. and the current crisis will probably do the same.We tend to think of the Depression as a time when families pulled together to survive huge job losses. The divorce rate, which had been rising slowly since the Civil War, suddenly dropped in 1930, the year after the Depression began. By 1932, when nearly one quarter of the workforce was unemployed, it had dropped by around 25% from 1929. But this does not mean that people were suddenly happier with their marriages. Rather, with incomes decreasing and insecure jobs, unhappy couples often couldn't afford to divorce.Today, considering the job losses of the past year. fewer unhappy couples will risk starting separate households. What's more, the housing market will make it more difficult for them to finance their separations by selling their homes. After financial disasters, family members also tend to do whatever they can to help each other and their communities. In a 1940 book, Mirra Komarovsky described a family in which the husband initially reacted to losing bis job" with tireless search for work. "He was always active, looking for part-time jobs or washing windows for neighbors. Another unemployed man initially enjoyed spending more time with his young children. The problem is that such enthusiasm is hard to keep up. The men Komarovsky studied eventually grew discouraged and their relationships with their wives and teenage children worsened. Across the country, many similar families finally failed to keep their families together. Then the divorce rate began to rise again.Millions of American families may now be in the early stage of their responses to the current crisis. During the Depression this stage seemed to last a year at most. Today, it might last longer. Wives now share with their husbands the burden of earning money, and the government provides more assistance. But history suggests that this response will be temporary. By 1940 the divorce rate was higher than before the Depression. So it is only when the economy is healthy again that we will begin to see just how many broken families have been created.(1)In the initial stage, what is the current economic crisis likely to cause?A.Leading to more family conflicts.B.Helping create strong family ties.C.Causing a drop in the divorce rate.D.Tearing many troubled families apart.(2)Why did many unhappy couples choose to stick together in the Depression?A.Living separately would be costly.B.They didn't want to hurt their kids.C.Starting a new family would be hard.D.They expected things to become better.(3)The author mentions the 1940 book to show that ________.A.hardships made people more courageousB.support between family members didn't lastC.the man was the only bread-winner of the familyD. many families pulled together to survive the crisis(4)What can be implied from the last paragraph?A.Money is the basis of many a happy marriage.B. It will take a long time for the economy to recover.C.The economic recovery will see a higher divorce rate.D.The current crisis is much more serious than the Depression.5.A US government study has found that facial recognition technology is getting better at identifying people wearing masks. The study is part of an ongoing research by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST). The agency has examined the effectiveness of more than 150 facial recognition systems on people wearing face coverings. The systems are powered by machine learning algorithms(算法).The first results of the study were announced in July, as health officials across the world urged people to wear masks to limit the spread of COVID-19. New findings were released this week. Police agencies have long used facial recognition technology to search for and help catch criminals. It can also be used to unlock phones or other electronic devices. Some robots use facial recognition technology to recognize the people they are communicating with. However, the wide use of masks in public has created major difficulties for such systems. The study looked at facial recognition systems already in use before the pandemic. It also looked at systems specially developed to work on masked faces. The NIST said it processed a total of 6.2 million images for the experiment. People in the images were not actually wearing masks. So, the researchers digitally added different mask shapes to faces in the pictures for use in the study. In some cases, up to 70 percent of a person's face was covered in the images. Overall, the research shows the top-performing facial recognition systems fail to correctly identify unmasked individuals about 0.3 percent of the time and the failure rate rose to about 5 percent with masked images. Many of the lower performing algorithms, however, had much higher error rates with masked images—as high as 20 to 50 percent. In the latest findings, researchers included results from 65 new facial recognition systems that have been developed since the start of the pandemic. "Some of these systems performed 'significantly better' than the earlier ones," Mei Ngan, a lead researcher on the project, said in a statement. The study also found round-shaped masks—which cover only the mouth and nose—led to fewer errors than wider ones that stretch across the cheeks. The new study also ran tests to see whether different colored masks would affect error rates. The team used red, white, black and light blue. The research findings suggested that generally, the red and black masks led to higher failure rates than the other colors.(1)How does the author mainly present the study finding?A.By giving definitions and examples.B.By giving examples and a brief description.C.By presenting data and making a comparison.D.By giving definitions and presenting data.(2)According to the study, what has affected the effectiveness of facial recognition?A.The speed of the machine learning algorithms.B.The operators' skill in performing algorithms.C.The number of the tested people.D.The diversity of face coverings.(3)Who is the most difficult to recognize?A.A girl wearing a white round-shaped mask.B.A lady with a red mask stretching across her cheeks.C.A man wearing a light blue mask covering his mouth and nose.D.A man wearing a black mask with his nose and mouth covered up.(4)What is the author's attitude towards the facial recognition systems?A.Objective.B.Negative.C.Uncaring.D.Doubtful.三、书面表达(本题共计 2 小题,每题 5 分,共计10分)6. 第一节假定你是李华,你校上周六在南山社区进行了义务劳动。

So I sat at my desk and started drawing some pictures. I didn’t notice the rest of the class walking in or the girl who was standing behind me till I was surprised by the voice, "So what are you drawing?" It was a girl who had really long hair. AElizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and moved to New York City when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. After writing many letters asking for admission(录取)to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in Philadelphia. She was so determined that she taught school and gave music lessons to get money for the cost of schooling. In 1849, after graduation from medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris. But have you ever thought about how to take care of four to twelve old people when you grow up and get married? This could be a problem for most Chinese youths as China is entering a new stage of an aging society. An aging society refers to one where 10 percent or more of its population is over 60. By the end of 2007, Chinese over 60 years old have made up 1 percent of the nation’s total population. “China is getting old before becoming rich,〞 said Cai Chuang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The population increase that has powered Chinese growth for three decades will give way over the next ten years to a rapid aging of the society. This will lead to weaker economic growth, because of a lack of labor resources. As a result of the family planning policy, it is expected that the country's total working population will decrease after 2021.China is not the only country getting old. More than 60 countries have become aging societies and one in three people in the European Union is a senior citizen. However, experts said that China doesn't have a highly developed social security network to support the old. Social security is an insurance program protecting those in need, including the old, the disabled and others.5. Chinese social problemsC. family planning policyD. aging problem in ChinaCUsing too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(缺乏). Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs .Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States, a family of four can use tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number. You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks(滴水) in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.8. Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?A. Using river water.B. Throwing batteries away.C. Paving parking lots.D. Throwing rubbish into lakes.9. What can be inferred from the text?A. All water shortages are due to human behavior.B. It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.C. There is much we can do to reduce family size.D. The average family in America makes proper use of water.10. The last paragraph is intended to ________________.A. show us how to fix leaks at homeB. tell us how to run a dishwasherC. prove what drinking glass is best for usD. suggest what we do to save water at home11. The text is mainly about _________________.A. how human activity affects our water supplyB. how much we depend on water to liveC. why droughts occur more in dry climatesD. why paving roads reduces our waterDAlthough English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers(汉堡包) are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham(火腿)? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.〞 One of theAmericans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers〞. Today “hamburgers〞 are sold in many countries around the world.Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting. too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.12. Hamburg is_____________.A. a kind of foodB. a round piece of beefC. the name of a villageD. a city in Germany13. According to the story, ________________.A. few Americans like hamburgersB. hamburgers are only made with beefC. hamburgers are made with hamD. hamburgers were first sold about a century ago14. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.Plan your time carefully. When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.Find a good place to study.Look around the house for a good study .Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV!When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.Make good use of your time in class.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.Study regularly. When you get home from school,go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.Develop a good attitude about the tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. Instead of eating reasonable portions of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and other healthy foods, lots of people eat too many cookies and chips. Many people just eat too much food in general. One result is an epidemic(流行病) of obesity (overweight) that has swelled the waistlines of millions of adults and kids. This increase in obesity has led to increases in the occurrence of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses. But for other people, foodbecomes the enemy. They worry so much about getting fat that they either severely limit what they eat or make themselves throw up right after eating. Doctors say that these people have eating disorders. Eating disorders among teens are much less common than obesity is. Yet the health consequences of eating disorders can be just as severe. Not eating enough can lead to heart attacks, weak bones, organ damage, and fainting spells. Repeatedly throwing up causes chemical imbalances in the body, erodes teeth, and destroys the stomach lining. Researchers are zeroing in on (aim at) what causes certainpeople to develop eating disorders, why some people are more at risk than others, and what kinds of education programs work best to keep people from taking drastic measures to lose weight or stay slim. It’s very important for your body. Most young people only get seven hours of sleep each night, when they actually need nine hours. And making up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping onweekends. In fact, sleeping late on weekends may actually do you more harm that good, if you have sleep problems. What happens if you don’t get enough sleep? If your sleep problem continues for a few nights, you could suffer serious problems. Lack of sleep can affect learning and memory. Worse, if your sleep difficulties last a long time, that could lead to anxiety or depression(抑郁). Therefore, you’ve got to have some healthy sleep habits. Below are some suggestions:GO TO BED AT THE SAME TIME—including weekends, if possible.WAKE UP AROUND THE SAME TIME EVERY MORNING When you wake up late just one morning during the week, it may disturb your body clock. Alcohol makes you excited. This prevents you from falling asleep or wakes you up during the night.DON’T SMOKE. Smoking is always bad for the body. Smoking before bedtime keeps you awake. If trying these tips over a couple of weeks does not help you, speak to your doctor. Do not take any sleeping pills without first asking your doctor. It’s hard--the geese won’t sit still, and they really don’t like it when you try to fill them into a little bag. If you want life to be a little warmer, lighter and more comfortable, the Marmot is a far better choice than live geese, since it’s filled with pure goose down (绒毛) and has a DWR-treated (防水处理的) coating that’s as light, lasting, and packable as they come. The Marmot features lasting protection and comfort for sleeping in mild to extreme weather conditions. Frankly, any other cold-weather bags don’t come lighter than the Marmot. If 2.5 pounds seems like a lot to you, just remember that the cookies you ate for lunch yesterday probably weighed more than that, and wouldn’t keep you warm nearly as efficiently. The secret, aside from goose down, is its vertical flow baffle(垂直挡板) design, which keeps down in place and minimizes the efficiency of the bag, keeping you warmer. To prevent the Marmot losing all its heat-keeping power if it becomes wet, the down’s been treated with down defender, which helps it function well even in slightly wet circumstances.Whether you’re about to take on a trip to the desert or Pacific Northwest, count on Marmot to give you the three-season performance and comfort you design.
