TOEFL® iBTIndependent Writing2018.09.02真题Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The best way for a teacher to help students interested in a subject is to explain that subject will help them outside school. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.`There is no substitute for teachers in the role of introducing students to all kinds of knowledge. It is true that teachers should give students detailed information of a subject, including what this subject will be used for in the society and what effort a student have to make toward his/her success in this area. However, this does not necessarily mean a teacher can best improve his/her students’ performance in this subject via demonstrating how this subject will benefit them in the society. In the first place, through education, a student finally understands the importance of knowledge to the society rather than to individual benefits. In other words, it would be narrow-minded to perceive education as a tool for personal success, such as money, fame and social status, etc. It is widely accepted that all knowledge has its value in the miscellaneous industries that account for a nation’s prosperity and people’s welfare. If a student proves his competence in a future job, he will be guaranteed wealth and respect that match his contribution. In contrast, a student is likely to become obsessed with pursuing benefits while gradually neglects the importance of diligent study due to a wrong motivation. Therefore, the method mentioned above could backfire. On top of that, teachers are supposed to cultivate their students into capable adults by virtue of high-quality lectures on subjects as well as by directing them in hands-on practice and career planning. As to teaching quality, a teacher should equip himself with knowledge that far surpasses his students’. Only in this way can a teacher help an interested student to probe further into a subject and assist in solving puzzles along the way. Besides, when it comes to knowledge application, a teacher should offer encouragement and bridge the communication between students and enterprises so that a student can truly accomplish something in this area.Last but not least, it is true that adults who have a job are easily success-driven, which means they will work harder if incentives are mentioned to them, like a higher salary or a more desirable position in the company. However, students can hardly understand what those benefits mean to them -basically, young students work assiduously on a subject due to their aspiration for knowledge and, perhaps, a challenging class atmosphere. In consideration of the diverse psychological conditions of students and grownups, informing children of an advantage which they fail to recognize now is not effective in its purpose. In conclusion, there are many ways for a teacher to help students interested in a subject and among them, telling a student what benefits this subject offers off campus is not the best. What is worse, a teacher may fail to stimulate his students or even mislead them to selfishness. This approach benefits neither the society nor individual students.(476 words, an essay example by Garlic)。

In order to adapt to the life in university and succeed, if you are a freshman, which method do you think is better:1. attending a one-week orientation or introduction program when you are in the university campus and before classes begin;2. meeting regularly in your first year with students in your major field who have entered the university for several yearsUse specific reasons and examples to support your answer.2018年5月26日When you do some tasks that need creativity, do you prefer to work with others or do them by yourselves? 针对该题2018年8月26日考题,可以选择:doing more extra work or assignments that are required,理由如下On the one hand, doing additional work or assignments can help us consolidate the knowledge or experience.针对该理由的论述展开为:doing additional work or assignments---we have to face and deal with more problems---in that process, the possibilities for us to notice where we are not good or proficient will beincreased---do some things to make up for that---help us to better consolidate the knowledge or experience---enable us to further understand the major or work---more possibly for us to defeat our competitors---therefore, get higher salaries or positions(最后的阴影部分主要是针对题目中的背景信息进行点及,以防段落展开中存在部分跑题;另外,如果解释论述不够,可以给出相关具体案例。

I am kind of shy, introvert. I dare not to speak with strangers, never mention about in public. That would be so hard for me. I remember it was 10 years ago when I was in university. And I attended an English presentation. I had fully prepared for several months ahead of competition day. I revised my speech content hundred of times and practiced over 5 hours per day. When I was on the stage to give a speech for audience, more than 200 people, I guess. I was not scare too much by fully preparation. I was proud of myself what I overcame. 托福TPO18独立写作题目原文: Question: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students are more influenced by their teachers than by their friends. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. 托福TPO18独立写作满分范文: All of us are surrounded by different kinds of people every day. For students, when they are at school, they are mainly surrounded by teachers and their friends. Both of these two kinds of people have great influence on students. However, I still believe that friends have greater influence on students than teachers do. Usually a student and his friends are almost at the same age, or at least they have similar ages. Therefore, they will have a lot of in common, such as hobbies. As a consequence, they can talk to each other and imitate each other’s behavior easily. My little brother and his friends are both interested in soccer games and they spent almost all their spare time talking about soccer games worldwide and great football players. What’s more, my brother’s friend is a good soccer player and my brother tends to imitate his behavior. As a result, my chubby brother becomes better at doing sports, especially playing soccer. Meanwhile, a teacher won’t have such great influence on a student since teachers have less in common with students. Moreover, in most schools in my country, the teachers just appear in front of the students when there is a class and they will leave the classroom as soon as the class in over. Thus, the students actually have limited time to communicate with their teachers. Even if they do have some time to discuss with their teachers, the topic of the discussion is usually the subject in class. However, a student could have hundreds of different topic, ranging from daily lives or school subjects, to talk with their friends. They have more time communicating and therefore, they know and understand each other better than their teachers. As for me, I can spend a whole day talking to my best friends but only an hour talking with my teachers. In addition, an everlasting friend may have greater influence in the long run than a teacher. Some of our friends at school may become friends forever. This kind of friend will influence us even when we graduate. However, teachers, on the contraryseldom become everlasting during our lives. They won’t have as great influence in the long run as our friends do. All in all, though I have to admit that teachers and friends both have great influence on students, I still believe that students are more affected by their friends. The more people have in common with you, the greater influence they will have on you. Therefore, a friend, who is the most similar to students, is the greatest influence during a student’s life. 以上是给大家整理的托福TPO18独立写作题目文本+满分范文,希望对你有所帮助!。

PASSAGE 1By the mid-nineteenth century, the term icebox had entered the American language, but icewas still only beginning to affect the diet of ordinary citizens in the United States. The ice tradegrew with the growth of cities. Ice was used in hotels, taverns, and hospitals, and by someforward-looking city dealers in fresh meat, fresh fish, and butter. After the Civil War (1861-1865),as ice was used to refrigerate freight cars, it also came into household use. Even before 1880, halfthe ice sold in New York, Philadelphia, andBaltimore, and one-third of that sold in Boston andChicago, went to families for their own use. This had become possible because a new householdconvenience, the icebox, a precursor of the modern refrigerator, had been invented.Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as we might now suppose. In the early nineteenthcentury, the knowledge of the physics of heat, which was essential to a science of refrigeration, was rudimentary. The commonsense notion that the best icebox was one that prevented the icefrom melting was of course mistaken, for it was the melting of the ice that performed the cooling.Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wrapping the ice in blankets, which kept theice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineteenth century did inventors achieve thedelicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficient icebox. But as early as 1803, an ingenious Maryland farmer, Thomas Moore, had been on the righttrack. He owned a farm about twenty miles outside the city of Washington, for which th e villageof Georgetown was the market center. When he used an icebox of his own design to transport hisbutter to market, he found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff inthe tubs ofhis competitors to pay a premium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-poundbricks. One advantage of his icebox, Moore explained, was that farmers would no longer have totravel to market at night in order to keep their produce cool.1. What does the passage mainly discuss?(A) The influence of ice on the diet(B) The development of refrigeration(C) The transportation of goods to market(D) Sources of ice in the nineteenth century2. According to the passage , when did the word icebox become part of the language of the United States?(A) in 1803(B) sometime before 1850(C) during the civil war(D) near the end of the nineteenth century3. The phrase forward-looking in line 4 is closest in meaning to(A) progressive(B) popular(C) thrifty(D) well-established4. The author mentions fish in line 4 because(A) many fish dealers also sold ice(B) fish was shipped in refrigerated freight cars(C) fish dealers were among the early commercial users of ice(D) fish was not part of the ordinary person's diet before the invention of the icebox5. The word it in line 5 refers to(A) fresh meat(B) the Civil War(C) ice(D) a refrigerator6. According to the passage , which of the following was an obstacle to the development of the icebox?(A) Competition among the owners of refrigerated freight cars(B) The lack of a network for the distribution of ice(C) The use of insufficient insulation(D) Inadequate understanding of physics7. The word rudimentary in line 12 is closest in meaning to(A) growing(B) undeveloped(C) necessary(D) uninteresting8. According to the information in the second paragraph, an ideal icebox would(A) completely prevent ice from melting(B) stop air from circulating(C) allow ice to melt slowly(D) use blankets to conserve ice9. The author describes Thomas Moore as having been on the right track (lines 18-19) to indicate that(A) the road to the market passed close to Moore's farm(B) Moore was an honest merchant(C) Moore was a prosperous farmer(D) Moore's design was fairly successful10. According to the passage , Moore's icebox allowed him to(A) charge more for his butter(B) travel to market at night(C) manufacture butter more quickly(D) produce ice all year round11. The produce mentioned in line 25 could include(A) iceboxes(B) butter(C) ice(D) marketsAnswers:BBACC DBCDA BPASSAGE 2The geology of the Earth's surface is dominated by the particular properties of water. Presenton Earth in solid, liquid, and gaseous states, water is exceptionally reactive. It dissolves, transports, and precipitates many chemical compounds and is constantly modifying the face ofthe Earth.Evaporated from the oceans, water vapor forms clouds, some of which are transported bywind over the continents. Condensation from the clouds provides the essential agent ofcontinental erosion: rain. Precipitated onto the ground, the water trickles down to form brooks, streams, and rivers, constituting what are called the hydrographic network. This immensepolarized network channels the water toward a single receptacle: an ocean. Gravity dominatesthis entire step in the cycle because watertends to minimize its potential energy by running fromhigh altitudes toward the reference point, that is, sea level. The rate at which a molecule of water passes though the cycle is not random but is a measureof the relative size of the various reservoirs. If we define residence time as the average time for awater molecule to pass through one of the three reservoirs —atmosphere, continent, and ocean—we see that the times are very different. A water molecule stays, on average, eleven days inthe atmosphere, one hundred years on a continent and forty thousand years in the ocean. Thislast figure shows the importance of the ocean as the principal reservoir of the hydrosphere butalso the rapidity of water transport on the continents.A vast chemical separation process takes places during the flow of water over the continents.Soluble ions such as calcium, sodium, potassium, and some magnesium are dissolved andtransported. Insoluble ions such as aluminum, iron, and silicon stay where they are and form thethin, fertile skin of soil on which vegetation can grow. Sometimes soils are destroyed andtransported mechanically during flooding. The erosion of the continents thus results from twoclosely linked andinterdependent processes, chemical erosion and mechanical erosion. Theirrespective interactions and efficiency depend on different factors.1. The word modifying in line 4 is closest in meaning to(A) changing(B) traveling(C) describing(D) destroying2. The word which in line 5 refers to(A) clouds(B) oceans(C) continents(D) compounds3. According to the passage , clouds are primarily formed by water(A) precipitating onto the ground(B) changing from a solid to a liquid state(C) evaporating from the oceans(D) being carried by wind4. The passage suggests that the purpose of the hydrographic network (line 8) is to(A) determine the size of molecules of water(B) prevent soil erosion caused by flooding(C) move water from the Earth's surface to the oceans(D) regulate the rate of water flow from streams and rivers5. What determines the rate at which a molecule of water moves through the cycle, as discussed in the third paragraph?(A) The potential energy contained in water(B) The effects of atmospheric pressure on chemical compounds(C) The amounts of rainfall that fall on the continents(D) The relative size of the water storage areas6. The word rapidity in line 19 is closest in meaning to(A) significance(B) method(C) swiftness(D) reliability7. The word they in line 24 refers to(A) insoluble ions(B) soluble ions(C) soils(D) continents8. All of the following are example of soluble ions EXCEPT(A) magnesium(B) iron(C) potassium(D) calcium9. TPO18 综合写作听力+阅读原文ReadingIn the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya will soon become extinct. Experts are considering three ways to address the decline of Torreya. The first option is to reestablish Torreya in the same location in which it thrived for thousands of years. Torreya used to be found in abundance in the northern part of Florida, which has a specific microclimate. A microclimate exists when weather conditions inside a relatively small area differ from the region of which that area is a part. Northern Florida's microclimate is very favorable to Torreya's growth. This microclimate is wetter and cooler than the surrounding region's relatively dry, warmclimate. Scientists have been working to plant Torreya seeds in the coolest, dampest areas of the microclimate. The second option is to move Torreya to an entirely different location, far from its Florida microclimate. Torreya seeds and saplings have been successfully planted and grown in forests further north, where the temperature is significantly cooler. Some scientists believe that Torreya probably thrived in areas much further north in the distant past, so by relocating it now, in a process known as assisted migration, humans would simply be helping Torreya return to an environment that is more suited to its survival. The third option is to preserve Torreya in research centers. Seeds and saplings can be moved from the wild and preserved in a closely monitored environment where it will be easier for scientists both to protect the species and conduct research on Torreya. This research can then be used to ensure the continued survival of the species.ListeningYou’ve just read about three ways to save Torreya taxifolia. Unfortunat ely, none of these three options provides a satisfactory solution. About the firstsolution-reestablishing Torreya in the same location-that’s unlikely to be successful, because of what’s happening to the coolest dampest areas within torreya’smicro-climate. These areas are being strongly affected by changes in the climate of the larger region. This could be because global warming has contributed to an increase in overall temperatures in the region or because wetlands throughout Florida have been drained. Either way, many areas across the region are becoming drier, so it’s unlikely that Torreya would have the conditions it needs to survive anywhere within its original Florida micro-climate.Now about the second solution, relocating Torreya far from where it currently grows, well, let’s look at what happened when humans helped another tree, the black locust tree, move north to a new environment. When they did this, the black locust tree spread so quickly that it killed off many plants and trees in the new environment, and some of these plants and trees were themselves already in danger of becoming extinct . So assisted migration can have unpredicted outcomes for the new environment.Third, research centers are probably not a solution either. That’s because th e population of Torreya trees that can be kept in the centers will probably not be able to resist diseases. For a population of trees to survive a disease, it needs to be relatively large and it needs to be genetically diverse. Tree populations in the wild usually satisfy those criteria but research centers would simply not have enough capacity to keep a large an diverse population of Torreya trees, so trees in such centers will not be capable of surviving diseases in the long term.
The Extinction of the Dinosaursmillion years ago) and the Paleocene period (65..C55 million years ago) in part by the types and amounts of rocks and fossils they contain or lack. Before the limit of 65 million years ago,marine2.strata are rich in calcium carbonate due to accumulations of fossils of microscopic algaedeposited on the sea floor. Above the 65-million-year limit,sea-floor sediments contain much less calcium carbonate ,and fossils of several families of mollusks are no longer found. In continental sediments ,dinosaur fossils ,though frequent before 65 million years ago ,are totally absent. By3.contrast,new families of mammals appear, including large mammals for the first time.Scientists wondered for many years about what could have caused the dinosaurs' rapiddisappearance at the end of the Cretaceous period, coming up with a great variety of theories and scenarios. For some, it could have been due to unfavorable genetic changes triggered bya dramatic increaseby a factor of 10,100,1,000 in cosmic-ray particles reaching the Earthafter a supernova explosion somewhere in the neighborhood of the solar system. For these high-energy particles to affect life, they would have to get through the protective barrier of the Earth's magnetosphere ,the region of the upper atmosphere controlled by Earth'smagnetic field. That could have happened if the cloud of particles from the supernovaexplosion reached the Earth during a period when the magnetosphere was weakened ,something that may happen when the Earth's magnetic field changes direction. And we know that the magnetic north and south poles of the Earth switch on the average twice everymillion years. However, this is not the only possible explanation for dinosaur destruction . 4.Other theories have raised the possibility of strong climate changes in the tropics (but theythen must be explained) . Certainly,if climate changes, the changed distributions oftemperature and rainfall modify the conditions that favor one ecosystem over another. The extinction of a particular family, genus,or species may result from a complicated chain of indirect causes and effects. Over thirty years ago ,scientist Carl Sagan quoted onesuggestion that the demise of the dinosaurs resulted from the disappearance of a species of fern plant that was important for dinosaur digestion. Other theories involved a worldwidecold wave following the spread of a layer of cold but not very salty water in the world'soceans ,which floated on the surface because, with its low salinity, the water was less dense.5.Proponents of another theory that remains under consideration today postulate that theextinction of the dinosaurs corresponds to a period of intense volcanic activity. It's not a question of just one or even of a thousand eruptions comparable to the explosion of Krakatoa in 1883,one of the largest volcanic events in modern times ,but rather of a prolonged period of activity. On the Deccan plateau in India, basalt (volcanic) rocks cover more than 500,000 square kilometers (nearly 200,000 square miles),and correspond to massive lava outflows occurring precisely at the end of the Cretaceous. This sort of outflow could correspond tovolcanic activity similar to the activity that drives sea-floor spreading ,with lava emerging from elongated fractures in the crust rather than from craters.6.The volcanic convulsion that buried the Deccan plateau in lava must also have changed thecomposition of the atmosphere and severely affected climate. Initially, there must have been strong sudden cooling resulting from the blocking of sunlight by sulfate aerosol veils in thestratosphere (part of the Earth's atmosphere). If strong cooling lasted a year after the formation of the aerosols , it would have been the death of tropical species unable to adapt to such a volcanic winter. 7. However ,a long period of strong volcanic activity (again ,remember thousands of Krakatoas) would at the same time have added a substantial amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere , reinforcing the greenhouse effect. This would gradually warm things up ,ending the extended cold snap and producing global warming together with geographic shifts of humid and arid (dry) zones. Certainly things would change to upset living conditions ,leading to the extinction of some species while others would profit ,if only from the disappearance of predators. 1..According to paragraph 1,which of the following is true of Paleocene sediments A. They lack fossils from some families of mammals found in Cretaceous sediments. B. They contain fossils of dinosaurs. C. They contain fossils of some animals that did not exist during the Cretaceous. D. They contain fossils of more kinds of mollusks than are found in Cretaceous sediments. 2..The word unfavorable in the passage is closest in meaning to A. Unusual B. Disadvantageous C. To provide evidence showing that Earth's protective barrier is difficult to get through B. To show that it is reasonable to think that particles from a supernova explosion could have reached Earth C. To explain why some scientists believe a supernova explosion may have occurred near our solar system D. To help explain why some scientists have rejected the theory presented in paragraph 2 5..According to the theory discussed in paragraph 2,a weakening of Earth's magnetosphere may haveA. caused a supernova to explode near our solar systemcBBBBB. allowed gene-altering particles to reach Earth's surfaceC. forced Earth's magnetic field to change directionD. allowed clouds of protective particles to escape from Earth's upper atmosphere 6..AII of the following are mentioned in paragraph 3 as possible causes for the extinction of the dinosaurs EXCEPT A. a change in the diet of dinosaurs B. a change in the climate of the tropics C. a decrease in global temperatures D. a decrease in deep ocean salinity 7..ln paragraph 3,why does the author include the quotation by Carl Sagan A. To explain the connection between dinosaur extinction and the extinction of other animal species B. To support the claim about species extinction being due to indirect causes and effects C. Now set your clock for 55 minutes.Question 1-12Orchids are unique in having the most highly developed of all blossoms, in which the usual male and female reproductive organs are fused in a single structure called the column. The column is designed so that a single pollination will fertilize hundreds of thousands, and in somecases millions, of seeds, so microscopic and light they are easily carried by the breeze. Surrounding the column are three sepals and three petals, sometimes easily recognizable as such, often distorted into gorgeous, weird, but always functional shapes. The most noticeable of thepetals is called the labellum, or lip. It is often dramatically marked as an unmistakable landingstrip to attract the specific insect the orchid has chosen as its pollinator. To lure their pollinators from afar, orchids use appropriately intriguing shapes, colors, and scents. At least 50 different aromatic compounds have been analyzed in the orchid family, each blended to attract one, or at most a few, species of insects or birds. Some orchids even change their scents to interest different insects at different times.Once the right insect has been attracted, some orchids present all sorts of one-way obstaclecourses to make sure it does not leave until pollen has been accurately placed or removed. By such ingenious adaptations to specific pollinators, orchids have avoided the hazards of rampant crossbreeding in the wild, assuring the survival of species as discrete identities. At the same timethey have made themselves irresistible to collectors.1. If you need to take a course, which professor’s course would you like to take?
- a professor who was voted the most popular
- a professor who has just won an award for an outstanding research
It can be a both interesting and rewarding experience to attend a lecture for many college students. Some of them prefer to take a course delivered by a professor with a high reputation among the students, while many others insist that a professor who has won an award for a cutting-edge research recently is well worth our listening to. In my opinion, I fall into the second category of students due to the following reasons.
To begin with, I believe that a professor can better improve my academic strength in various aspects if he/she is proved particularly capable in research by winning an award. A students should give first priority to knowledge and skill acquisition at university because this is the ultimate goal of his education and the most profound factor that affect his later career. Through following the instruction of a professor with distinguished academic achievements, a student is most likely to have a good understanding of a subject’s theories, real-life application and its future development. In this way, I, along with the students who make the same choice, will be equipped with expertise necessary to excel in our academic and industrial territories.
In addition, an award-winning research is inclined to be a locomotive driving forward the advancement of its subject area and the society as well, which foresees a brand new area of infinite opportunities in comparison with those long-established subjects. For instance, medicine has long been a heated arena for numerous scholars and their earth-shattering/groundbreaking findings that not only cure diseases having been deemed fatal before but also aim at exploring the secrets of human bodies for our long-lasting welfare. Professors who win honors for their researches, such as in stem cells, herbal remedy of malaria and gene therapy for cancers, deserve more popularity among students in order to spread their wisdom. And this is true to other disciplines as well.
Lastly, it is true that professors who are voted the most popular among students are also very brilliant teachers due to their good command of knowledge, sense of humor and harmonious teacher-student relationship. However, I myself do admire / hold in high respect a professor who is not only very competent in academics but has strict
requirements, high expectation and all-round supports for his/her students. It is undoubted that award-winning professors are more likely to be good at these aspects on account of their self-evident merits.
To conclude, a professor bestowed an award for his/her high-end research can definitely enhance my knowledge, vocational prospect as well as overall qualities towards a competitive scholar in the end. This is why I make my decision as to the question mentioned above.
