More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think thatis a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products. For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. Believe it or not, the dim lighting could actually help save your life in case of a plane emergency. The dimmed lights before taking off the runway and landing are a flight precaution used to help passengers’ eyes adjust quicker during an emergency escape. “Going from a brightly lit environment to one that’s completely dark would require some time for our eyes to focus and see the escape slide,” Alice Theriault, service director for Air Canada wrote in a press statement. “Since we need to have all the seconds on our side in the event of an emergency, dimming the lights is one of many steps we take to ensure the safety of our customers.”The phenomenon that your eyes see those strange speckles (小斑点) as your sight adjusts toa dark place after being in a light place is called dark adaptation. It normally takes our eyes about20 to 30 seconds to see best in a dark room. The brighter the lights, the longer it takes for our eyes to adjust, which is why dimming the plane lights could shorten your “dark adaptation” timesince you haven’t been sitting under fluorescent bulbs (荧光灯) all flight. Not only does dimming lights add valuable time to the escape process, but it reduces the tension on your eyes if you need to look outside, or see the emergency lighting along the passage. “It helps keep you in the right direction.” Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Cockpit Confidential told The Telegraph. “It also makes it easier for flight attendants to assess any outside risks, such as fire or debris, that might affect an escape.” So next time a pilot dims the lights, just know it’s for your safety, even though it creates a gentle atmosphere for your takeoff into the sky. 4.The lights are turned down before takeoff to help passengers_______.A.escape in time of emergencyB.take a short breakC.create a comfortable atmosphereD.enjoy themselves5.Which of the following is true according to Paragragh 2 and 3?A.Dimming lights is required when accidents happen.B.Our eyes need some time to adapt to the change of light.C.Speckles are caused by the use of dimmed lights.D.It is required for pilots to turn off lights during the flight.6.What is the function of shortening “dark adaptation” time?A.Slowing down the landing.B.Adjusting the plane lights.C.Keeping passengers calm.D.Helping the crew judge outside risks.7.What is the text mainly about?A.A tip to make air travel safer.B.An emergency event happening on a plane.C.An explanation of an airline safety measure.D.A warning message from the pilot.3.(8分)CHundreds of villagers took matters into their own hands by digging miles of trenches(沟壕)to install their own cables(电缆). The tiny village in Michaelston-y-Fedw, with a populationof 300, clubbed together after being unable to download films, stream music or connect to online banking. Farmers, teachers and even the village pub owners put in thousands of hours of volunteering to dig miles of trenches and now have super fast broadband(宽带).The project cost around £250,000 with villagers paying£150,000 of their own money to secure their super fast connection speed. They were also able to obtain£100,000 from EU funding and the Welsh Government Access Broadband Cymru scheme. The idea was produced in the local pub when villagers were complaining about their Wi-Fi connections. Ben Longman, owner of the Cefn Mably Arms, said, “We were in the pub and we were all complaining about how bad the Wi-Fi was. I had just paid for high speed broadband and realized it would not work.”One of the organizers, Carina Dunk, 61, said it was fantastic what the village had achieved. She said, “It used to take a few days to download a film; now it takes less than a minute. Communities have tended to be more distant and separated but not here anymore. Sometimes we have to take a step back and achieve something.”A year after the project, most of the 300 villagers are now united in a 1,000mps broadband connection. However, Richard Raybould, 59, is still waiting for his house to be connected on the edge of the village and said he cannot wait. He said, “It is amazing what skills people in the community have. There are experts and farmers who dig trenches. I have met at least 30 people who I had never spoken to before.”8.What can we learn about the villagers?A.They had no access to the Internet.B.They usually didn’t have much free time.C.They didn’t know how to use the Internet correctly.D.They considered their Internet connection disappointing.9.To have their own cables, the villagers had to_______.A.partly cover the costB.employ workers to dig trenchesC.donate £100,000 to EU fundingD.get the local government’s permission10.What does the author intend to do by mentioning Carina Dunk’s words?A.Explain the cause of the project.B.Explain the process of the project.C.Show the benefits from the project.D.Show the villagers’ attitudes toward the project.11.What would be the best title for the text?A.Villagers obtain access to the InternetB.Villagers dream of super fast broadbandC.Villagers volunteer to install super fast broadbandD.Villagers are suffering from bad Wi-Fi connections4.(8分)DWhy are photos and videos of cats high-fiving suddenly popping up on social media?Ask Jackson Galaxy, who launched Cat Pawsitive last year, a program that encourages animal shelters to teach cats how to do tricks to make them more attractive for adoption. The idea is simple. A kitty that can sit on command or give a high five shows that it can listen to instructions and connect with others. A high five can make a shy cat open up, Galaxy said.“Big life changes can lead to cats losing their confidence, and we help those cats to feel more confident and to feel safe interacting with new people.” Christie Rogero, program manager for Cat Pawsitive, said. And Stephen Holdeman, training manager at the KC Pet Project, added: “All we need to train a cat to do tricks is the right amount of patience, timing and motivation.” He uses a technique called “operant conditioning (操作性条件反射)”, which associates a cat’s action with getting a reward such as a favorite food or treat. He also uses a clicker—a training device that makes a clicking noise. “In the initial stage, we get the cat used to the idea that when it hears the sound of the clicker, one of its favorite treats appears. After we have bridged these two ideas together we can use the clicker to reinforce different actions the cat does to let it know that if it repeats the action, it will get a treat.”After several repetitions, the cat starts to link everything together. Now all you need to do is let your extended hand be the target, and we’ve got a high five.12.According to the text, how can learning tricks benefit cats at animal shelters?A.It is a good way for shelters to raise money.B.It allows them to pick up skills to stay safe.C.It helps them interact more with each other.D.It helps them build confidence and get adopted.13.According to the text, what should be done from the start to train cats to learn tricks? He walked in the streets of Brooklyn day after day with his favourite music blasting directly into his ears. By his early 20s, Michael had lost much of his upper-range hearing. The children’s Hearing Institute reports th at hearing loss among children and young adults is rising in the United States, and that one-third of the damage is caused by noise.Surrounded by NoiseWe live in a noisy world. Young and old alike are beset by sounds over which we may have little or no control: power mowers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, car and house alarms, sirens, motorcycles, Jet Skis, loudspeakers, even movie previews. We attend rock concerts, weddings, parties and sports events at which the music is so loud you can hardly hear the person sitting next to you. At home, televisions, stereos and computer games are often turned up so loud that listeners cannot hear a doorbell or a telephone. Many “modern” restaurants have chosen noisy enhancement instead of abatement (减轻). Any time you need to shout to be heard by someone near you, your hearing is most likely to be in a decibel (分贝) danger zone.As if environmental noise were not enough, now we surround children with noisy toys and personal listening devices that can permanently damage their hearing. Toys that meet the safety standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials can produce sound up to 138 decibels, as loud as a jet taking off. Yet workplace rules require hearing protection for those exposed tonoise above 85 decibels.Introduction A boy lost much of his hearing due to being 1. __________ to headphones. According to a study whichwas published on March 16 in the journal PLOS Genetics, people who live in a placewith warm and moist conditions commonly have wider noses while those that live in cold and dry locations have narrower noses.Mark Shriver, a geneticist and anthropologist(人类学家)at Pennsylvania State University, together with his team of international researchers from the United States,Ireland and Belgium, measured and compared noses across populations using 3D facial imaging. The study is not the first one to identify the relationship between nose shape and air temperature and moisture content. However, it is the first one to use nose measurement from actual people.“Many people have tested the question with measurements of the skull, but no one had done measurements on live people, " said lead author Mark Shriver from Pennsylvania State University. As reported by Science Recorder, all in all, faces of 476 from four geographical locations —West Africa, East Asia, South Asia and Northern Europe were used in the study. However, their ancestry genetic measurements were also taken into consideration. The researchers concluded that while the differences in nose shape were indeed inluenced by genetie drift, which refers to the change in frequency of certain genes due to deaths and movement of people across borders, natural selection also played its role.Narrower nasalpassages assist in increasing the moisture content of air and warm it.Since peopl e with narrower ones adapted better, they survived more and therefore produced more offspring. As such, there is a gradual decrease in people with wider nose in the area.24.People in the South of China generally tend to________.A.have wider noseB.have narrower noseC.be more easygoingD.enjoy dry and cold weather25.How did Marker's researchers do their research?A.By studying the skulls.B.By doing research online.C.By measuring noses of the people.D.By offering more moisture for people26.Which of the following can influence nose shapes?A.Body height.B.Local tradition.C.Local climateD.Body weight.27.What are people with narrow nose able to do?A.Raise more of their children.B.Adapt to cold weather better.C.Survive in hot weather conditionsD.Keep their ancestry from their parents.8.(8分) CKannisto and her six sons visited a local barber' s shop to have their hair cut and donatedit to an organization that provides hair replaeements for kids with medically related hair loss.Kannisto has a l0-year-old son, Andre, 8-year-old twin sons, 5-year old triplets and a 2-year-old daughter.Kannisto said the motivation behind the haircuts was personal for the whole family.“Three years ago, my friend lost her son to cancer, " she said.“He was a twin and very close in age to my twins. As a parent myself, I wanted my child to have the lifeI never had, so I enrolled my daughter in all types of activities such as dancing, piano lessons, theatre groups and sports acti vities. I had her privately tutored for maths and even looked into private schooling. While all of this is good for developing a child's confidence, it's no guarantee that the child will grow to fit your expectations in later life.In some cases a child may inwardly resent(憎恶)the pressure of being involved in so many things all at once, and become bored over a period of time. One of the best ways toreally encourage your child to do well in life is to be the example for them. Children usually follow in the footsteps of their parents or at least one of them. This is how family businesses are handed down through generations.Believe it or not, the parent is the greatest mentor(导师)and influence in the life of a child. It's interesting to note that they judge their own measure by that of their parents even if they don't get along with them, it takes place unconsciouslyYoung minds will follow their mentors such as parents and teachers. So it's not surprising that if you sign yourself into adult education classes.chances are your child will be keen to follow you even if it' s later in their life.Leading by example is the best way to educatechildren of all ages. It's not difficult when children get to know your movements.Children will almost always judge themselves on what their parents do. The strongest influences are in and around what you do in the home and even outside of it, so make sure your ticking all the right boxes yourself and it's a win situation.32 According to the text, what the author had done for her daughter ________.A. proved to be of little valueB. resulted in great suecessC. greatly influenced her later lifeD. cost the author too much money33. The 30-year-old owner of Gashora Farm knows what a difference that makes.“You need more role models,” he said, standing among knee-high rows of chilli (辣椒) plants. “If you have young farmers, they have land and they drive to the farm, others may think, ‘Why can’t I do that?’”Mr. Twahirwa, a university graduate, bought a friend’s tomato farm six years ago for $ 150. He made $ 1, 500 back in two months. “You have to link farming with entrepreneurship and real numbers,” he said. Many young Africans are abandoning areas in the countryside, choosing not to work hard and for a long time in fields — a job made tougher by climate change. But Twahirwa is one of the growing band of successful farmers working to make agriculture’s image on the continent more attractive. Some 1, 000 farmers now produce chillies for him. He is starting a fourth farm of his own, and exports fresh and dried chillies and oil to Britain, the United States, India and Kenya.Africa has the world’s youngest population and 65 percent uncultivated arable land (耕地后备资源).Yet accessing land and loans is difficult, and African productivity is low with crop yields just 56 percent of the international average.“Agriculture is mainly associated with suffering and no young person wants to suffer,” said Tamara Kaunda. She believes African agriculture needs a change to get rid of its old-fashioned image of very hard and tiring work with a hoe. “Show young people with tractors, green fields, nice irrigation systems smartphones,” she said.Getting young people involved in agriculture does not mean they have to work on a farm. For example, in coffee production, the beans go from the farm to the washing station , then to be separated from the husks (外壳).4.What does “Why can’t I do that?” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Why can’t I drive to the farm?B.Why can’t they farm?C.They follow the example of those farmers.D.They bought a friend’s tomato farm.5.What makes it harder for farmers to work?A.Poor land.B.Climate.C.Low income.D.Long working hours.6.What can we learn about Twahirwa according to Paragraph 5 ?A.He made a fortune by growing chillies.B.His chillies are try growing chillies.C.Farmers working for him live a simple life.D.The locals aren't willing to buy his chillies.7.When it comes to agriculture in Africa, what do people think about it?A.Loans are difficult.B.Most land is uncultivated.C.Crop yields are rather lowD.Farming methods are out of dateAs climate change causes ocean temperatures to rise, one of Greenland’s previously most stable glaciers is now reducing at an unheard-of rate, according to a new study. The study was led by researchers at The Ohio State University. The team found the truth. Between 2018 and 2021, Steenstrup Glacier in Greenland reduced about 5 miles, thinned by about 20% and doubled in the amount of ice that went into the ocean. According to the study, such a rapid change is so extraordinary among Greenland’s ice formations that it now places Steenstrup Glacier in the top 10% of glaciers that contribute to the entire region’s total ice discharge.Steenstrup Glacier is part of the Greenland Ice Sheet, a body of ice that covers nearly 80% of the world’s largest island, which is also the single largest contributor to the global sea rise from the cryosphere (冰冻圈), the portion of Earth’s ecosystem that includes all of its frozenwater. While the region plays a crucial part in balancing the global climate system, the area is steadily reducing as it loses hundreds of billions of tons of ice each year because of global warming. As far as scientists knew, Steenstrup Glacier had been stable for decades. It was hardly influenced by the rising temperatures that had influenced so many other regional glaciers, likely because of its special position in shallow water. It wasn’t until Thomas Chudley, lead author of the study, and his colleagues collected observational and modeling data from previous remote sensing analyses on the glacier that the team realized Steenstrup Glacier was likely experiencing melting due to anomalies (反常现象) in deeper Atlantic water.According to Chudley, the current situation in Greenland serves as an early warning sign for possible future events in West Antarctica within the next few centuries. He also expressed the importance of conducting direct observations in the fjord to understand the reasons behind the changes observed in Steenstrup Glacier.8.Why does the author mention the figures in paragraph 2?A.To count the number of global glaciers.B.To show the severity of melting glaciers.C.To tell people the percentage of glacier water.D.To stress the consequence of global warming.9.What possibly makes Steenstrup Glacier stable for a long time?A.Its location.B.Its content.C.Its sort.D.Its big coverage. 10.What is Chudley’s attitude to the current situation in Greenland?A.Optimistic.B.Concerned.C.Disappointed.D.Confident. 11.What is the main idea of the text?A.A once-stable glacier in Greenland is now rapidly disappearing.B.The Steenstrup Glacier is the largest contributor to the global sea rise.C.Researchers try to enter Greenland to observe how it has changed.D.Glaciers play a crucial part in balancing the global climate system.bread products, fruit, coffee, etc. And the meal is typically presented in a buffet (餐饮部), from which guests can help themselves.13 However, the continental breakfast doesn’t refer to the English breakfast, which often includes meat, cereals, fruit and even vegetables in addition to bread products, juice and hot drinks. A “continental breakfast” describes the type of breakfast you’d meet in Europe, especially France. It is lighter, cheaper and more delicate (精致的).Nowadays, many hotels worldwide are offering continental breakfasts. 14 They don’t need much staff to prepare them. Besides, a continental breakfast is convenient for travelers who might not have much time for a meal in the morning.A continental breakfast is usually provided in hotels for a specific period of time during the morning. The food is typically placed on a large table. Objects like forks and knives are put beside. There might be tables and chairs where guests can sit and eat. 15 Most hotels that offer continental breakfasts will tell guests the time period when the food will be available. 16 Thus, guests who wait until near the end of the availability time period should expect that the supply of some items might be gone. Also, it is considered to be impolite for a guest to take very large amounts of the food that is provided.A.Such meals become more popular.B.Continental breakfasts are common.C.A continental breakfast means a light breakfast.D.Firstly, these items are more cost-effective for hotels.E.The term “continental breakfast” had its beginning in Britain.F.Many times, a limited amount of food will be provided each day.G.They can also take their breakfast back to their rooms or elsewhere.二、完形填空I’ve been working as a UN Peacekeeper in the Central African Republic for the past twoand help bring supplies of food and medicine. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt asecond language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference."Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link betweenbilingualism and maths skills."Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的), "he said."You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34.Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better."Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.13.The main subject talked about in this passage is ______ .A.science on learning a second languageB.man’s ability of learning a second languageC.1anguage can help brain powerD.1anguage learning and maths study14.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to ______ .A.say language is also a kind of physical laborB.prove that one needs more practice when he(she) is learning a languageC.to show the importance of using the language when you learn the languageD.make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well15.The underlined word “bilingual” probably means ______ .A.a researcher on language learningB.a person who is good at learning foreign languagesC.a person who can speak two languagesD.an active language learner二、阅读七选五(本题共计1小题,总分10分)5.(10分)第二节七选五(共5小题,每题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AFourteenyearold Richie Hawley had spent five years studying violin at the munity School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles when he took part in a violin contest. Ninetytwo young people were invited to the contest and Hawley came out first. The contest could have been the perfect setup for fear, worrying about mistakes, and trying to impress the judges. But Hawley said he did pretty well at staying calm. “I couldn't be thinking about how many mistakes I'd make —it would distract me from playing.” he says. “I don't even remember trying to impress people while I played. It's almost as if they weren't there. I just wanted to make music.”Hawley is a winner. But he didn't bee a winner by concentrating on winning. He did it by concentrating on playing well.“The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part,” said the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin. “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essentialthing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”A characteristic of high performers is their intense, pleasurable concentration on work, rather than on their petitors or future glory or money, says Dr. Charles Garfield, who has studied 1,500 achievers in business, science, sports, arts, and professions. “They are interested in winning, but they're most interested in selfdevelopment, testing their limits.”One of the most surprising things about top performers is how many losses they've had —and how much they've learned from each. “Not one of the 1,500 I studied defined losing as failing,” Garfield says. “They kept calling their losses ‘setback’.”A healthy attitude towards setbacks is essential to winning, experts agree.“The worst thing you can do if you've had a setback is to let yourself get stuck in a prolonged depression. You should analyze carefully what went wrong, identify specific thing s you did right and give yourself credit for them.” Garfield believes that most people don't give themselves enough praise. He even suggests keeping a diary of all the positive things you've done on the way to a goal.1. What is mon among high performers is that they tend to give priority to ________. A.glory B. Wealth C. pleasure D. Work2.According to the passage, successful people concentrate on _______.A.challenging their own limits B. learning from othersC. defeating their opponentsD. avoiding setbacks3.The passage tells us that “praise” in times of trouble ________.A.helps people deal with their disappointment B. makes people forget their setbacksC. makes people regret about their pastD. helps people realize their goalsBThirteen vehicles lined up last March to race across the Mojave Desert, seekinga million in prize money. To win, they had to finish the 142mile race in less than10 hours. Teams and watchers knew there might be no winner at all, because these vehicles were missing a key part — drivers.DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, organized the race as part of a push to develop robotic vehicles for future battlefields. But the Grand Challenge, as it was called, just proved how difficult it is to get a car to speed across an unfamiliar desert without human guidance. One had its brake lock up in the starting area. Another began by throwing itself onto a wall. Another got tied up by bushes near the road after 1.9 miles. One turned upside down. One took off in entirely the wrong direction and had to be disabled by remote control. One went a little more than a mile and rushed into a fence; another managed to go for six miles b ut stuck on a rock. The “winner”,if there was any, reached 7.8 miles before it ran into a long narrow hole, and the front wheels caught on fire.“You get a lot of respect for natural abilities of the living things,” says Reinhold Behringe, who helped desi gn two of the carsize vehicles for a pany called SciAutonics.“Even ants can do all these tasks effortlessly. It's very hard for us to put these abilities into our machines.”The robotic vehicles, though with necessary modern equipment such as advanced puters and GPS guidance, had trouble figuring out fast enough the blocks ahead that a twoyearold human recognizes immediately. Sure, that very young child, who has just only learned to walk, may not think to wipe apple juice off her face, but she already knows that when there's a cookie in the kitchen she has to climb up the table, and that when she gets to the cookie it will taste good. She is more advanced, even months old, than any machine humans have designed.4.Watchers doubted if any of the vehicles could finish the race because ________.A. they did not have any human guidanceB. the road was not familiar to the driversC. the distance was too long for the vehiclesD. the prize money was unattractive to the drivers5.From the passage we know “robotic vehicles” are a kind of machines that________.A. can do effortlessly whatever tasks living things canB. can take part in a race across 142miles with a time limitC. can show off their ability to turn themselves upside downD. can move from place to place without being driven by human beings6.In the last paragraph, the author implies that there is a long way to go ________.A. for a robotic vehicle to finish a 142mile race without any difficultiesB. for a little child who has just learned to walk to reach the cookie on the tableC. for a robotic vehicle to deal with a simple problem that a little child can solveD. for a little child to understand the importance of wiping apple juice off his/her faceCAs long as I can remember, I've always loved to draw. But my interest in drawing wasn't encouraged very much. Growing up in the 1950s, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, boys were supposed to be athletic. Certain peer pressures encouraged little fingers to learn how to hold footballs rather than crayons. My early love for drawing developed into a love for telling stories through pictures. Stories began as fragments (片段) of pictures in my mind. I created a story by posing questions to myself. I called it the “what if” and “what then” approach. For example, for my book The Polar Express, I started out by thinking “What if a boy gets on that train? Where does he go?”From the time I e up with the idea, write and illustrate the book, and deliver it to the printer, it takes about seven months. First, I begin thinking of the idea. Then I imagine the pictures and the story. A good picture book should have events that are visually arresting. I first consider scenes that are exciting to look at and then my challenge is to weave a story around those pictures. The next step is putting the illustrations and story down on paper. When you first look at my illustrations, you see ordinary, everyday things. Butif you look closer, things might not seem quite so simple. When I'm writing a book, I always try to create something strange or puzzling in each picture. By using artistic strategies, I can give the drawing a kind of mysterious quality. All of my books are picture books, so they are generally thought of as books for children. But when I make them, I think of the books as being for everybody — for people of all ages. When I was a kid, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, but now I'm really glad I became an artist and a storyteller.7.Why does the author mention The Polar Express?A. To tell us an interesting story.B. To introduce his famous work.C. To make up a sentence with “what if”.D. To show us how he designed his book.8.The underlined word “arresting” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.A. frighteningB. interestingC. satisfyingD. worrying9.Which of the following is TRUE about the author?A. But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions. My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren’t written until the final threat.I’ve been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master’s degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student (技校学生). They’re called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body. When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he’s a good kid,” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don’t often make school honor rolls (光荣榜).But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don’t have the a bilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly (多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, b ut you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most applelovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards (果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.28. What can people do at the apple events?A. Attend experts’ lectures.B. Some people see patriotism (爱国主义) in the documentary, and some consider it a great cultural export.“It is not empty propaganda (宣传) about China’s splendid food culture. Instead, it shows the techniques used in making food and their production process as well asthe lives of ordinary people, thus striking a chord with the audience,”an Internet user said. The success of the documentary should be attributed to sincerity and reality. It is said sarcastically that Americans like to shoot sci-fi films because they have no history, while Chinese like to shoot time-travel dramas to the past because they have no future. It has set people thinking. Works that are created behind closed doors and fail to reflect reality or that only focus on the luxury lives of a few people and ignore ordinary people’s desire for enough food and clothing will not touch people’s hearts, and they will be no use whether traveling to the past or the future.A Bite of China shows that a commercial documentary promoting patriotism can be full of touching details, that the emotions of ordinary Chinese people should be exhibited even in publicizing China overseas, and that even a completely commercial program can achieve both artistic and commercial success.“We made this documentary with our respect and love for food, ”said director Chen Xiaoqing. Being sincere is the most important thing for artists because they cannot move others unless they themselves are first moved, and cannot convince others unless they themselves are first convin ced. Sincerity is the “secret” for making this documentary so popular, and every cultural creator should learn from its success.32.What is not the feature of A Bite of China from Paragraphs 1 and 2?A. Showing relations between people and food and between people and society.B. Making people realize every grain comes from hard work.C. Not only providing delicious food but also making people see patriotism.D. Touching many mothers who can do some cooking.33.How was Paragraph 4 written?A. Giving an example.B. Comparing.C. Narrating.D. Introducing.34.What’s the secret for making this documentary so popular and successful?A. Beauty.B. Delicious taste.C. Interest.D. Sincerity.35.What’s the best tit le for the passage?A. Why is A Bite of China so popular?B. Why is A Bite of China made into a film?C. The process of making A Bite of China.D. A Bite of China witnesses patriotism.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
