Two Mothers and One BabyIt happened a long time ago in a small native village in China. There were two brothers living in the same house. Both sisters-in-law were expecting. The elder woman who had a miscarriage did not let anyone know about it. When both women were in confinement and the younger sister-in-law delivered a baby boy, the elder one stole her child at night. For three years the two mothers were fighting over the baby. Each claimed that the little baby was hers. The matter was brought before a chief minister of the county. As he listened to their story, he said, "Since there's only one baby, I don't see how I can give him to either one of you. The best thing I can do is to cut the baby in half, each take one-half of the baby."The elder lady smiled and quickly replied, "Sir, I accept your decision." But the younger sister-in-law lady cried and begged the chief minister saying," Please sir, don't cut the baby in half. Little Boy and Ice CreamIn the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less. A 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him."How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "Fifty cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired.By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. "Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table.A Rabbit That Longed to Visit the MoonLong ago, in a land far away, there lived a beautiful white rabbit. One day, he heard that his old uncle-rabbit had accompanied his old master to the moon where he had often longed to visit. But he had no wings, he couldn't reach there. He was sad all days long. Suddenly an idea occurred in his mind. So he went to visit all the powerful flying birds and begged them to take him there, but none would oblige him. When a crane heard him, he offered to carry the rabbit to the moon."I am willing to help you. Hold on tight, my friend rabbit, and let me make your dream come true. Let's go!"As rabbit held crane's legs, its weight stretched crane's legs long. After few days flying, they both were extremely tired. On reaching the moon, with his hands in gratitude, rabbit touched crane's head, which magically turned into a red crown.4、The White HouseWhy is the United States capitol building called the White House? Maybe many people want to know. The short answer to that question is that the United States capitol building is not called the White House. The capitol building has a dome shaped roof that rises above all the other buildings in Washington, D.C. The two houses of Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives, meet in the Capitol building. The building known as the White House is the home of the President of the United States and his family. The President also has his office there.American's first President, George Washington, helped choose the land for the new presidential home in 1790. A competition was held to find a designer to build it. Architect James Hoban won the contest. He planned a building of grayish white sandstone. The color gave the house its name. Work started in 1792. But the house was not ready before the end of President Washington's term. America’s second President, John Adams, and his wife, Abigail, moved into the house on November 1st, 1800. By then, the building had six completed rooms.5、Christmas TreesMany Americans are busy preparing for Christmas and the winter holiday season. The other sixty percent are artificial, or man-made trees. Many people believe that Christmas trees come from forests. In fact, most trees are carefully grown on farms. Farmers plant and harvest Christmas trees as a crop, similar to fruits or vegetables. There are about fifteen-thousand Christmas tree farms in North America. About thirty-three-million natural Christmas trees are sold there each year. Traditionally, farmers grow evergreen trees for Christmas trees. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that while Valentine was in prison awaiting his fate, he came in contact with his jailor, Asterius. The jailor had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to heal his daughter. Part ⅠReading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer SheetPassage 1One study shows that Americans prefer to answer with a brief "Yes", "No", "Sure", or the very popular "Yeah" rather than with a longer reply. (76) But brief replies do not mean Americans are impolite or unfriendly to some extent. Very often, Americans are in a hurry and may greet you with a single word "Hi", indeed; this is a greeting you will hear again and again during your stay in the United States. It is used by everyone, regardless of rank, age or occupation. However, those who are accustomed to longer greetings may require a little more time before they feel comfortable with American simple talk.Americans sometimes use plain talk when they are uncomfortable. (77) If people praise them or thank them in an especially polite way, they may become uncomfortable and not know what to say in reply. They don't want to be impolite or rude, you can be sure that they liked what was said about them. Except for certain holidays, such as Christmas, Americans don't usually give gifts. Thus, you will find Americans embarrassed as they accept gifts, especially if they have nothing to give in return. They are generally a warm but informal people.1. The fact that Americans like shorter answers tells us ______.A.they reply very quickly in a hurryB.they choose words too carefullyC.they like replying brieflyD.they want to be as polite as they can答案:C本题考查考生对细节的把握。
