According to UNESCO, 258 million children and youth do not attend school, and more than 617 millionchildren are not achieving minimum proficiency levels inreading and mathematics. These numbers are alarming, and they underscore the urgent need for greater investment in education, especially for those who are most marginalized, such as girls, children with disabilities, and those living in conflict-affected areas.As a girl, I know firsthand the challenges that girls face in accessing education. Girls in many countries face discrimination, violence, and harassment that prevent them from going to school. These barriers are unjust and unacceptable. Girls have the right to enjoy the same opportunities and benefits of education as boys, and we must push for policies and programs that break down these barriers and ensure that girls receive quality education.Equality is another critical aspect of empowering young people, especially girls. Gender equality is not just a moral imperative; it is also smart economics. According to the World Bank, closing the gender gap in education could boost global GDP by $15 trillion by 2030. We need to empower girls to become leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers, and provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.Finally, I want to talk about the importance of confidence. Confidence is the foundation of success, and it is something that we must cultivate and nurture in ourselves and in others. Too often, girls suffer from low self-esteem and lack of confidence, which can limit their potential in life. We need to celebrate girls’ achievements, help them develop a strong sense of self-worth, and provide them with positive role models to emulate.In conclusion, education, equality, and confidence are the keys to unlocking the full potential of young people, especially girls. We must invest in education, break down barriers to access, promote gender equality, and cultivate confidence in ourselves and others. As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." I am afraid to go out in the sun now because of the holes in the ozone. I am afraid to breathe the air because I don't know what chemicals are in it. I used to go fishing in Vancouver with my dad until just a few years ago we found the fish full of cancers. And now we hear about animals and plants going extinct every day - vanishing forever. In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.Did you have to worry about these little things when you were my age? All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions. I'm only a child and I don't have all the solutions, but I want you to realize, neither do you! You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer. You don't know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream. You don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct. And you can't bring back forests that once grew where there is now desert. If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it! Here, you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organizers, reporters or politicians - but really you are mothers and fathers, brothers and sister, aunts and uncles - and all of you are somebody's child. I'm only a child yet I know we are all part of a family, five billion strong, in fact, 30 million species strong and we all share the same air, water and soil - borders and governments will never change that. I'm only a child yet I know we are all in this together and should act as one single world towards one single goal.In my anger, I am not blind, and in my fear, I am not afraid to tell the world how I feel. In my country, we make so much waste, we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, and yet northern countries will not share with the needy. Even when we have more than enough, we are afraid to lose some of our wealth, afraid to share. In Canada, we live the privileged life, with plenty of food, water and shelter - we have watches, bicycles, computers and television sets.Two days ago here in Brazil, we were shocked when we spent some time with some children living on the streets. And this is what one child told us: "I wish I was rich and if I were, I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicine, shelter and love and affection." If a child on the street who has nothing, is willing to share, why are we who have everything still so greedy?I can't stop thinking that these children are my age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born, that I could be one of those children living in the Favelas of Rio; I could be a child starving in Somalia; a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India. I'm only a child yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this earth would be! At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us to how behave in the world. You teach us: not to fight with others, to work things out, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share - not be greedy. Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do?Do not forget why you're attending these conferences, who you're doing this for - we are your own children. You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in. Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying "everything’s going to be alright', "we're doing the best we can" and "it's not the end of the world". But I don't think you can say that to us anymore.Are we even on your list of priorities? My father always says "You are what you do, not what you say." Well, what you do makes me cry at night. Thank you for listening.演讲者：瑟玟．铃木的简介Severn Cullis - Suzuki BRIEF BIOGRAPHYRaised in Vancouver and Toronto, Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been camping and hiking all her life. When she was 9 she started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They were successful in many projects before 1992, when they raised enough money to go to the UN's Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Their aim was to reminding the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12 year-old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech that received a standing ovation. Since Rio, Severn has given many speeches to schools and corporations, conferences and international meetings worldwide. In 1993 she received UNEP's Global 500 Award in Beijing, China. An accomplished television host and presenter, Severn has appeared and participated in many programs in Canada, the U.S., and Britain. Most recently she was the host of Suzuki's Nature Quest, a children's television series currently airing around the world. She has written numerous articles on environmental issues for magazines and newspapers, and has also published a book with Doubleday called Tell the World. From 1997 to 2001 Severn served as a Commissioner for the UN's Earth Charter, a document that strives to serve as a code of ethics for human conduct towards our resources, our planet, and each other. She is also an active participant in the preparations for the Johannesburg World Summit to be held in 2002, the ten year anniversary of Rio '92. Severn has worked closely with native peoples of British Columbia and the Amazon towards protecting forests threatened by unsustainable logging. She has been honored by three aboriginal nations in B.C: she was adopted into the Haida Nation, and the Heiltsuk Nation, and has a name from the Nuchalnulth people. Sev's love of the outdoors feeds her passion to speak about the future of our environment. Last summer, she and five girlfriends celebrated the millennium by cycling across Canada in a campaign for clean air called "Power shift 2000." This summer she worked for two months at the remote Pinkeiti Research Station in the Xingu valley of the Brazilian Amazon, furthering her academic pursuits in biology. I spoke about the importance of education, the need for more opportunities for girls, and our responsibility to protect the environment.For me, education is not just a way to gain knowledge and skills; it is a way to change the world. Education is the key to unlocking doors of opportunity, to breaking down barriers of inequality, and to opening minds and hearts to new possibilities. But for too many children, especially girls, education is still out of reach.In some parts of the world, girls are denied education simply because of their gender. This is unacceptable, and itis up to all of us to work to ensure that every child has the chance to learn and grow. Education is a human right, and we must fight for it.At the same time, we must recognize the importance of protecting the environment. Our planet is our home, and we have a responsibility to care for it. We must reduce our carbon footprint, conserve resources, and work to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same beauty and diversitythat we do today.As a 12-year-old girl, I know that I am not alone in my desire to make a difference. Today, I am here to address the most pressing global issues that threaten the future of our beautiful planet.As we all know, we are currently facing serious environmental issues that we cannot afford to ignore any longer. Climate change, pollution, habitat destruction, and deforestation, all pose a significant threat to the survivalof many species on Earth, including humans. I believe that we can no longer ignore these problems; and we must worktogether to find solutions before it is too late.Climate change is one of the most critical issues of our time that needs to be urgently addressed. The world is experiencing an increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, including wildfires, hurricanes, heatwaves,and floods, which are causing unprecedented damage to our ecosystems and communities. It is our duty to act now andtake immediate action to reduce carbon emissions andtransition to renewable energy sources.Another issue that requires our attention is plastic pollution. Scientists estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. This is unacceptable,and we must take action to reduce our plastic consumption and increase recycling efforts. We should also encourage manufacturers to switch to sustainable materials, so we can leave a cleaner and healthier planet for future generations.Moreover, we must recognize that the destruction of habitats and deforestation is a growing concern. We must work collectively to protect and preserve our forests, coral reefs, wetlands, and other vital ecosystems. Conserving natural habitats and their biodiversity is critical to maintainingthe balance of our fragile planet, and protecting our own health and well-being.Lastly, we must not forget the significant social and economic challenges that we face. Poverty, hunger, and inequality are still prevalent in many parts of the world. Itis imperative to acknowledge and address these issues, and to ensure that everyone has access to education, healthcare, and other basic human rights.In conclusion, as a young advocate for the future, I urge each and every one of you to recognize the threats facing our planet's wellbeing. Let us choose to act now, and work together towards a healthier and sustainable future. We must summon the moral courage to face our challenges head-on, and resolve to make the world a better place for us all.
