My Good Friend Who Helps Little Kids with Their English Homework
Ever since I can remember, my best friend Aisha has always loved helping others. She's one of the kindest, most caring people I know. Aisha has a special gift for teaching and a heart of gold when it comes to kids. That's why for the past few years, she has been volunteering her time to help elementary school students with their English homework. I'm constantly inspired by Aisha's generosity and her passion for making a positive difference.
It all started when Aisha was in the 8th grade. My Good Friend Helping Little Kids with Their Homework
I have this really awesome friend named Jake who is just the coolest guy ever. He's a few years older than me, but we've been tight ever since I moved to this neighborhood back when I was in 5th grade. Jake was the first person to welcome me and he really helped me adjust after that tough transition of switching schools and leaving all my friends behind.
From the very start, Jake took me under his wing and showed me around. He introduced me to all the cool hangout spots, taught me about the ins and outs of the neighborhood, and just made me feel at home. I'll never forget his kindness during those first few months when I was the new kid feeling lost and out of place. Jake could have easily ignored me or made fun of me like some older kids unfortunately do, but instead he embraced me as his friend.
Now several years later, Jake is in high school and I'm in 8th grade. Our friendship has only grown stronger over time. We play sports together, go to the movies, hang out playing video games, and Jake has even helped tutor me in a few subjects I struggled with at school. He's just an all-around awesome dude.
But there's one thing Jake does that I think is particularly amazing and inspiring. Every week, Jake volunteers at the local community center to help tutor and mentor the little kids with their homework. It's a free after-school program for kids from more underprivileged backgrounds to get academic support.
I'll never forget the first time I tagged along with Jake to see what this was all about. We arrived at the community center and there were probably 20-25 kids there, all ranging from kindergarten age to 5th grade. Some were sitting at tables

Under Jake's guidance though, I started to pick up on better techniques for engaging the kids, keeping them focused,
making the lessons fun and interactive, and ensuring they really understood the material.
Over time, I found that I really started to look forward to these afternoons at the community center as much as Jake did. Yeah, it could be hectic and loud, but it was also so fulfilling and rewarding in a way I never expected. Seeing the light bulbs go off in these kids' minds when they finally solved that tricky math problem or grasped that difficult reading concept gave me such a sense of pride and joy. I could see them gaining confidence right before my eyes.
I was in awe of Jake's ability to connect with these kids from such different backgrounds. Many of them faced challenges at home that made focusing on academics difficult. Some didn't have a lot of educational support or role models in their lives. But Jake had a special way of inspiring them, motivating them, and letting them know they were smart and capable of achieving great things. He used his own life story of growing up in a tough area and working hard to get good grades as an example for them to follow.
Whenever I complimented Jake on what an amazing mentor he was, he would just humbly shrug it off. "Ah man, I'm just doing my small part to give back, you know? Every kid deserves a
chance to learn and succeed, no matter their circumstances. That's what this is all about." Jake never sought any recognition or praise - he legitimately just wanted to make a positive impact.
As I watched my friend in action week after week, I gained a deep respect and appreciation for teachers and anyone who dedicates themselves to supporting kids' education. It's not an easy job, but it's one of the most important and impactful roles in society. Having a caring, passionate mentor like Jake makes all the difference in the world for these kids.
Sure, Jake could have easily just focused on his own life - school, part-time job, college applications, hanging with friends. But he chose to go above and beyond to create change in his community. My Best Friend Jenny and How She Helps Little Kids with English
Hey everyone! My name is Amy and I'm 16 years old. I go to Henderson High School here in our small town. Today I want to tell you all about my best friend Jenny and the amazing work she does helping little kids in our neighborhood with their English homework.
Jenny and I have been inseparable since we were 7 years old and started 2nd grade together at Oakwood Elementary. We instantly hit it off and became best buds. I'll never forget the day we met on the playground during recess. I was struggling to
climb up the jungle gym when Jenny came over and helped boost me up. From that day on, we were joined at the hip.
Even back then, Jenny was one of the smartest and most caring people I knew. She was always at the top of our class and helped other students who were struggling with their work. Her kindness and patience really stood out. While the rest of us kids just wanted to goof around at recess, Jenny would spend her free time tutoring her classmates who needed extra help with reading, writing, and math. She had this special gift for explaining things in a simple, easy-to-understand way.
As we got older, Jenny's passion for helping others with their studies never wavered. All through middle school and now high school, she has volunteered as a tutor and mentor to younger students. Her outstanding academic performance allowed her to take all the advanced classes. But she never let her own busy workload get in the way of servicing others.
It was actually in 9th grade when Jenny had the idea to start tutoring kids after school with their English homework and reading/writing assignments. There are a lot of immigrant families in our town whose parents don't speak English very well. This can make it extremely difficult for their children to get proper assistance at home with their language arts education.
Jenny wanted to fill that gap and make sure no kid fell behind just because their family couldn't help them due to the language barrier.
At first it was just Jenny tutoring a couple kids for an hour after school twice a week. But word quickly spread about how helpful and effective she was. Soon, more and more kids started signing up for her tutoring sessions. By the end of that first year, she had over 20 kids, ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade, that she was tutoring every week! It was amazing to see how quickly her program grew just through word-of-mouth in the local community.
I remember Jenny being so happy and fulfilled that she could use her talents to make such a big positive impact at such a young age. Seeing the kids' reading, writing, and overall English abilities improve so much was extremely rewarding. Their parents were overjoyed as well. For many of their families, having their children become fluent in English was the key to achieving so many goals and having more opportunities in life.
Of course, handling such a large tutoring program started to become a lot for Jenny to take on by herself. That's where I came in to help, along with a few other friends and classmates who wanted to get involved. We helped Jenny manage the
ever-increasing schedule of tutoring sessions. We'd greet the kids as they arrived after school, get them set up with snacks and homework materials, and then rotate through assisting Jenny with the actual tutoring.
I'm certainly no English wiz like Jenny, but I tried my best to reinforce the concepts she taught in easy-to-understand ways for the kids. Reading books out loud and having them follow along was a big part of our routine. We'd stop frequently to discuss vocabulary words they didn't know and make sure they comprehended what we just read. For writing, we loved having them write silly short stories or describe their favorite
toys/games/foods. Anything to make it fun and engaging while still practicing their English skills.
What has been so amazing is watching these kids absolutely fall in love with reading and writing over the years. They literally go from struggling just to put a basic sentence together to producing wildly imaginative stories and having
thought-provoking discussions about books. Their confidence soars as their English abilities improve more and more each year.
And it's not just their skills that improve - we've watched these kids blossom into kind, caring individuals themselves. They've learned the importance of hard work, discipline, and
helping others. The older kids have started mentoring the younger ones. They all look up to Jenny as such a great role model for being smart, humble, and generous with her time. Just being around her positive energy and seeing her dedication has taught them so many valuable lessons.
Now, over 7 years later, Jenny's tutoring program has become a cornerstone of our community. Kids get put on the waitlist for her tutoring practically from the day they are born! She has former students who are now in high school and middle school that come back to volunteer as tutors themselves. It's become this beautiful, full-circle thing.
What started as just one friend helping out a few kids has transformed into over 40 children getting high-quality English tutoring every week - all free of charge for their families. On top of that, Jenny has spent years training and overseeing a team of over 20 volunteer tutors who are now experienced in teaching English skillfully and effectively.
For me, one of the best parts is seeing how Jenny's program has brought together so many different families from diverse cultures and backgrounds through the shared goal of achieving English literacy. There are few things more American than that! Kids whose parents immigrated from places like Mexico,
Guatemala, China, Vietnam, Syria and more all come together to learn and have fun while growing their English abilities.
Friendships have blossomed, not just between the kids, but between their families as well. They've formed this supportive community that celebrates each other's cultures and works together to ensure every child gets the educational resources they need and deserve. It's an amazing thing that Jenny, through her kind heart and selfless hard work, was able to facilitate.
I'm just in awe of how much of an impact my best friend has had on our local community at such a young age. It has been so inspiring to watch her program grow from such humble beginnings to a highly-respected institution that has truly changed lives. Hundreds of kids now have the gift of English literacy, along with the skills, values and community support to achieve their dreams. All thanks to the dedication of one friend who wanted to share her love of learning.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the immense support Jenny has received from her parents, teachers, school administrators and our entire community. Her mom and dad have been rockstars, not just financially but also with handling scheduling, transportation, snacks and materials for the tutoring sessions over the years. The schools have been
fantastic in providing classroom space and resources. Local businesses have stepped up to provide funding, supplies and snacks. It's been a huge community effort.
But there's no doubt that the heart and soul of this amazing English tutoring program has been my lifelong best friend Jenny. Her kindness, brilliance, generosity and unwavering commitment to education has changed so many young lives for the better. Just thinking about the thousands of hours she has voluntarily dedicated to helping these kids succeed is staggering. Multiply that by the impact each of those kids will have in making their families and communities better. That's the legacy Jenny is building.
So yes, while she may be one of the smartest people I know, Jenny is an even better human being. By using her talents to uplift others, especially children, she is the best example of what people are capable of when they lead with empathy, compassion and a willingness to serve their community. She is a true role model for youths and adults alike.
I'm so lucky to have such an incredible best friend. Seeing what Jenny has accomplished at still such a young age herself makes me only imagine the great things she'll continue achieving in life. Wherever she goes and whatever she does, her
tutoring program here will always be something our town can point to as an embodiment of her spirit. It will forever be a reminder of how powerful one person's kindness can be in changing lives. I'm just grateful I got to be along for the ride and be inspired by my best friend's amazing heart.。
