The truth is, long trips are actually easier on your car than day-to-day driving, but a breakdown far from home can really destroy the fun. A few simple checks will help you to avoid many common problems. Two to four weeks before you go, get any major repairs done. If your car needs major repair or maintenance, do it at least one month before you go. That will allow plenty of time for any problems related to the repair to appear. Before you pack, give your car a good wash. Clean cars always seem to run better. Besides, who wants to travel in a dirty car? Make sure your tires are inflated to the proper pressure. Low pressure can be a problem. Follow the instructions for checking tire pressure in your owner's manual. You should also check the spare tire. Make sure it is fully inflated and that other important spare parts are in the trunk. Before you go, open your suitcases and take one last look. Ask yourself, do you really need all that stuff? If there's anything you can do without, leave it home. If you're carrying lots of heavy objects, position them forward in the trunk and divide the weight evenly side to side. Cars don't have unlimited carrying capacity, so don't overload. There is no guarantee that unexpected things cannot happen. But if you've followed these guidelines, you've avoided a lot of potential problems. Relax and enjoy your trip!6.People have concerns about driving on long trips ______.A) if their cars are newly boughtB) if they have never driven on long trips beforeC) if their cars are quite oldD) if they haven't bought insurance for their carsScript: People have concerns about driving on long trips ______.正确答案:C学生答案:A得分:0分7.When does one have to repair his car if it needs major repair?A) One to two weeks before one goes.B) Two to four weeks before one goes.C) At least one month before one goes.D) At least two months before one goes.Script: When does one have to repair his car if it needs major repair? 正确答案:C学生答案:C得分:2分8.Before you pack, what should you check the tires for?A) Hardness.B) Newness.C) Leaks.D) Pressure.Script: Before you pack, what should you check the tires for?正确答案:D学生答案:D得分:2分9.How should you position the heavy objects in the trunk?A) Make them take as little space as possible.B) Divide the weight evenly.C) Separate them from side to side.D) Group them according to their types.Script: How should you position the heavy objects in the trunk?正确答案:B学生答案:D得分:0分10.If one has followed all these guidelines, ______.A) a lot of problems will be prevented from happeningB) there will be no problem on the tripC) a lot of money has to be paidD) many useful things have to be left at homeScript: If one has followed all these guidelines, ______.正确答案:A学生答案:A得分:2分Passage TwoQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.Script:Before you fly to China, you should know that the national airline is Air China. As is true of any flight, travelers should confirm their return flight reservations; otherwise they would have problems. Also, be prepared for a long flight. A nonstop from New York to Beijing lasts 14 hours while a flight to Shanghai lasts up to 18 hours. There are four airport hubs within China: Beijing, Guangzhou Baiyun International, Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai Pudong. Each airport includes taxis, public and shuttle buses, duty free shops, banks, post offices, business and Internet facilities and bars and restaurants. Important to note is the departure tax, which is paid in Chinese currency, or RMB, only.Once you are in China, you can take many kinds of transportation like rail, sea and automobile. Railways are the major means of transportation throughout China. The trains are inexpensive, safe and well maintained operating between major cities. There are three types of trains, the Express option being the best of the three. There are four varieties of fare: hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper and soft sleeper. Children under 3 feet tall travel free and those under 4 feet pay a quarter of the fare. Train travel is often a comfortable experience although it takes much time, due to the distance between major cities. National plane travel saves your time. Flights from Shanghai to Beijing, Hong Kong to Shanghai and Guangzhou to Shanghai are about 2 hours; however, the roundtrip travel costs 350 dollars. Preparation is the key to success for any business traveler —whether you are an experienced traveler or beginner traveler. Here are my suggestions for preparing for any business trip. Before traveling, research your travel destination and take advantage of free time you may have. On a recent trip to New Haven, I had a few free hours to myself before my plane departed. Ahead of time, I researched a few good restaurants that I wanted to try. I downloaded a Yale walking tour to my cell phone so I could see the campus and take pictures. You may have friends or relatives close to your travel destination. Take their information in case you have an opportunity to see them. Often, business trips are too busy for you to do anything besides going to work, going to dinner, and sleeping. However, sometimes you may have delays or cancellations. You should also check the weather. It may be nice when you are departing for your trip. The weather on your return trip may be a whole other story. There are a few other things to keep in mind when you go on trips. Traveling on the company can be a great way to see the world. It's not a vacation. Business trips can be exhausting! If you are going on a trip for training, you will probably have a few hours of free time each night. You can take this opportunity to know more people. Later you can go back to your hotel room to do work. You could also take advantage of sporting events, shows, or music in the area. With everything well planned, the business travel will be part of your sweet memory.6._____ need preparations for a business travel.A) Only those having their first business travelsB) Only those traveling less than once a monthC) Both first-time travelers and experienced travelersD) All except very experienced travelersScript: _____ need preparations for a business travel.正确答案:C学生答案:C得分:2分7.What did the speaker do before traveling on a recent trip to New Haven?A) The speaker found information about restaurants.B) The speaker called some friends there.C) The speaker took pictures of the airport.D) The speaker booked the return ticket.Script: What did the speaker do before traveling on a recent trip to New Haven? 正确答案:A学生答案:A得分:2分8.You should check the weather because _____.A) the trip will be cancelled if the weather is badB) the weather on your return trip may be very differentC) you cannot play if the weather is not goodD) you will have to stay a few more days if the weather is not goodScript: You should check the weather because _____.正确答案:B学生答案:B得分:2分9.Which is TRUE about a business trip?A) It is a great vacation.B) It is a good opportunity to train yourself.C) It is not expensive.D) It is exhausting.Script: Which is TRUE about a business trip?正确答案:D学生答案:D得分:2分10.You can _____ with the free hours on a business trip.A) go to another cityB) have a vacationC) go shoppingD) listen to musicScript: You can _____ with the free hours on a business trip.正确答案:D学生答案:A得分:0分Passage TwoQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.Script: Passage TwoSituated in Utah State, the Bryce Canyon is one of the National Parks in the United States of America. It attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Now there is a story about it.Before there were any Indians, the Legend People lived in that place. They were of many kinds — birds, animals, lizards, and such things — but they looked like people. For some reason, the Legend People in that place were bad. Because they were bad, they were turned by gods into rocks. You can see them in that place now: some standing in rows, some sitting down, some holding on to others. You can see their faces, with paint on them just as they were before they became rocks. This is the story told by some people. But to the pioneer Ebenezer Bryce, the Canyon that now bears his name was something totally different. In 1875, Ebenezer Bryce was 45 years old. He traded his home in Pine Valley, Utah, for some cows and moved to the warmer climate of the upper Paria Valley, hoping that his wife's health would improve. Since he could find no water in the place, he dug ditches to bring it from the Paria River to his farm. To get fire wood from the forest to his farm, he built a road. Among the residents who used the road, the canyon became known as Bryce's Canyon.Bryce left the valley in 1880 and moved to Arizona. Perhaps the climate was not warm enough, or maybe he found a better place to settle down. But he left the valley a little more habitable than when he came, and he left the canyon with the name it still bears today.11.What is the Bryce Canyon named after?A) A person.B) An animal.C) A god.D) A river.Script: What is the Bryce Canyon named after?正确答案:A学生答案:A得分:2分12.According to a story, _____ lived in the Bryce Canyon before the Indians.A) wild animalsB) the Legend PeopleC) birdsD) godsScript: According to a story, _____ lived in the Bryce Canyon before the Indians. 正确答案:B学生答案:B得分:2分13.When was Ebenezer Bryce born?A) In 1830.B) In 1845.C) In 1875.D) In 1880.Script: When was Ebenezer Bryce born?正确答案:A学生答案:A得分:2分14.Ebenezer Bryce moved to warmer climates because _____.A) he wanted to live in a new placeB) he wanted to feed his cowsC) he had lost his houseD) he wanted to improve his wife's healthScript: Ebenezer Bryce moved to warmer climates because _____.正确答案:D学生答案:D得分:2分15.What change did Ebenezer Bryce bring to the valley?A) More animals could be found.B) Gold was found.C) The place became more habitable.D) The climate became colder.Script: What change did Ebenezer Bryce bring to the valley?正确答案:C学生答案:C得分:2分Part II Oral Tasks ( 3 minutes )Section ADirections: In this section, you will hear several conversations. Before packing, put names tags on valuable items like cameras andcellphones. Make sure that each piece of luggage, including carry-on has a luggage tag on it.If you know your hotel’s address and phone numbers, put it on your luggage tags.3.Saving space. The most important items for your trip: passport, plane tickets, traveler’schecks, credit cards keys and etc should go in your carry-on bag. Always keep them with you.Keep your carry-on bag small and light. Put those the heavy items in your checking luggage.Use soft bags such as backpacks or shoulder bags for carry-ons. They fit easily under the airplane seat or into the small overhead compartment.5.Other ideas. Bring an empty bag for souvenirs from the trip. We visited a lot of villages, some very remote that we had to travel by helicopter. In Tanzania, it's very different from America so there are no maps. So, even traveling in a helicopter, we didn't really know where we were going to go. We didn't reallyknow the village names, so we just kind of had no destination and we got in the helicopter andjust flew around. And if we saw some animals or some rooftops of hut houses, we said, "Let'sgo there" and we just kind of landed.Dennis:I have a lot of funny experiences on the airline as a flight attendant. Take the red line three stops. Cet off at the City Zoo stop. It’s pretty obvious.Ashley: thanks a lot.Jose: no problemAshley: oh, wait. Noe more thing. How much does the sbuway cost?Jose: two dollars.Audio track 3-2-6Realtor: Hello, Mrs Wills. I think this house is perfect for you. And I need two rooms for my kid.Realtor: And there’s also a big yard.Mrs. Wills: Great! I’d love to have a garden. My kids can play there.Realtor: Shall we go outside and have a look?Mrs. Wills: OK.Audio track 3-2-7There are seceral ways to improve life in my city. Our biggest problem is transportation. We really need more ways to get around. I’d like to ride my bicycle to work, but there is too much traffic on the streets. We need safer places for bicyclingand walking. Another problem is the parks. We have some nice parks, but we don’t take good care of them and they are often dirty. We need cleaner parks, where children can play and adults can relax. One more problem is nightlife. There’s nothing to do in the evening! We should build a big theater for plays and concerts.Audio track 3-2-8Take back your streetTwo neighbors meet on a city sidewalk. They talk about planting more flowers along their street, or asking the city council to add bike lanes to a busy road. In small but important ways, these people are changing the face of their cities. All around the world, people are speaking up and working hard to make their cities safer and more pleasant for pedestrians. Cities have painted crosswalks on their streets, made streets narrower, put in traffic lights and speed bumps, and made plans to help more kids walk or bike to school. Many people have learned from a man from Brisbane, Australia, named David Engwicht. His book Reclaiming Our Cities and Towns has a simple message. He says that in the past, streetsbelonged to everybody. Kids played there, and neighbors stopped there to talk. But now, streets are just for cars and trucks. People stay inside to get away from the noise and dangerous traffic, and we lose contact with our neighbors. Engwicht says that we should use streets for more than just transportation. People need to take back their streets.Engwicht travels around the world, helping people think differently about pedestrians, streets, and neighborhoods. Besides his books and articles, he gives many speeches. He has worked in neighborhoods from Honolulu to Scotland. While Engwicht was writing his book, he learned about how neighbors in the city Delft, in the Netherlands, stopped dangerous traffic on their street. They put old couches, tables, and planters in the streets. Cars could still pass, but they had to drive slowly. When the police arrived, they saw the value of these illegal actions to make the streets safer. Soon city officials started planning ways to make cars slow down, and“calm” the traffic.Engwicht says we should think about streeets as our “outdoor living room.”Calming the traffic is just the beginning. In the future, streets will be safe places for childre again, and our neighbors will become our friends.Unit2, Lesson BVideo track 3-2-1Jennifer: Iwant my dream house to be by a lake with a big yard. Roberto was excited, but he was a bit nervous about learning a new software program. Claudia told him not to worry and promised to help him learn it. Then Roberto asked Claudia if she might get promoted soon because her boss had been transferred to a different office. Claudia said that getting promoted was not a big deal. She explained that her goal was to quit her job someday and relax. Roberto, however, said his life was planned already, almost right up to retirement. He thought it was important to have well-defined goals, but Claudia said to Roberto should keep his options open, and“go with the flow.”Roberto agreed, but only if the “flow” followed his plan!。

What's up?Paula: Well, as you know, I'm going on vacation for two weeks. Do you think you could water my plantswhile I'm away?Leticia: Sure. No problem.Paula: Great. They need water twice a week. There's one plant in the bedroom and one in the kitchen.Leticia: OK--say, how about your dog? Should I feed her, too?Paula: No, that's OK. I’m putting her in a kennel.Leticia: All right, then, I'll water your plants---and---oh, how about the mail? Should I pick it up for you?Paula: Actually, I've already asked the mailman to stop mail delivery. Thanks for asking, though. Leticia: Well, have a great trip!Paula: Thanks, Leticia. I really appreciate your help.Leticia: My pleasure. Wait a second. I don t have any keys to your place.Paula: Oh, that's right. Thanks again!Track 3-1-3;3-1-4;3-1-5W: Wow, Jun, you look relaxed! Did you enjoy the long weekend?J: I sure did actually. Actually I took a big trip.W: Over the weekend? We only had three days off!J: Yep! But I visited four countries in three days!W: What?!J: I love to fly! You might say I’m an airplane freak!W: That’s interesting. Where did you go?J: I visited Korea, Tailand, Singapore and the Philippines.W: Sounds like you were busy.J: I was. I only had only four hours in so. So I have to finish my shopping very quickly. Sometimes I had to run between connecting flights.W: Wait a minute. What about your baggage? Didn’t you have to wait for it?J: No, I didn’t have much, only one carry-on bag, it just fits the overhead compartment.W: So let me get this straight. You spent your weekend in an airplane flying around?J: Basically yes. I fly standby.W: Standby?J: Yes, as a standby passenger. I don’t have a reservation. At the last minute, they let me know if there’s a seat available. They give me a boarding pass and I get on.W: All these flying must be expensive.J: Well, I’m an airline employee. I’m a sales representative for Twin Star Airlines. So I know most of the flight attendants and I can almost fly for free.W: Lucky you!Track 3-1-6Matt: Have you done all the errands?Tina: No, I haven’t finished them yet.Matt: You don’t have to go to the post office, I’ve canceled the mail delivery.Tina: Well, I’ve picked up the plane tickets. But I haven’t taken the dog to the kennel. What about you? Have you washed the dishes?Matt: No, I ha ven’t cleaned the kitchen. But I’ve already watered the plants, and I’ve given our keys to Mrs. Smith.Tina: What about your suitcase? Have you packed it?Matt: Not yet…But don’t worry: there’s still lots of time!Track 3-1-7S: Are you almost ready?J: Yes, I think so. But we always forget so many things. Did you get the traveler’s checks at the bank yesterday?S: Yes I did. And I paid the bills too.J: Well, I changed our voice mail message and I confirmed all of our flights.S: Great! Let’s remember to give the house keys to Mr. Jacobsen so he can come in and water our plants.J: This afternoon I have to stop the mail delivery at the post office.S: And could you please take the dog to kennel?J: No, I hate that. He always looks so scared.S: And this time let’s remember to empty the trash before we leave.J: And we’ll give away all the fresh food. Last year there were black tomatoes and green meat in our refrigerator after our vacation.S: I made a note to myself unplug the computer.J: And I promised to turn off all the lights. The electric bill was terrible last time.S: Maybe we should write a list, they may be used again on our next vacation.Track 3-1-8;3-1-9Tips for better packingAre you planning to travel for a weekend or several months around the country or overseas? Here are some tips to help you pack your bags.1.Pre-trip planning. Make a packing list to help you remember everything. Reveal it about aweek before your trip. Plan a time to go shopping for things you need for your trip. Don’t pack the night before you travel. You’ll forget things when you’re in a hurry.2.Tagging luggage. Before packing, put names tags on valuable items like cameras andcellphones. Make sure that each piece of luggage, including carry-on has a luggage tag on it.If you know your hotel’s address and phone numbers, put it on your luggage tags.3.Saving space. Pack small items: socks, belts and etc inside your shoes. It uses the empty spaceand helps the shoes to hold their shape. Pack your clothes in plastic bags. If you’re traveling with a friend, plan your packing together, share your alarm clock, toothpaste or first aid kit. 4.Your carry-on bag. Remember to pack a few rub ofbans, safety pins and plastic bags, they can be very useful. Bring some snacks such as nuts, cookies or dried fruit, you can eat them if you don’t have enough time for a meal. Sharing food is a good way to made other travelers.Unit 1 Lesson BVideo track 3-1-1Dave: Before going on a trip I pay the bills, I empty the trash, and I give a house key to a friend. Alejandra: Before I leave on a trip, I have to confirm travel plans and make sure that I have requesteda vegetarian meal.Thallus: Before leaving for a long trip, I turn off the lights, I turn off my heater, I give my keys to myroommate, and I water my plant.Video track 3-1-2Julianna: The funniest story of my traveling experience was when I came to the U.S. for the first timeby myself. They lost my luggage and I didn't speak a word of English. I had to use my handsto explain myself. People understood what I meant and they helped me out.Catherine: My recent trip to Africa was one of the most amazing trips of my life, This was my secondtrip to Tanzania, Africa. He says that in the past, streets belonged to everybody. Soon city officials started planning ways to make cars slow down, and"calm" the traffic.Engwicht says we should think about streeets as our "outdoor living room."Calming the traffic is just the beginning. In the future, streets will be safe places for childre again, and our neighborswill become our friends.Unit2, Lesson BVideo track 3-2-1Jennifer: Iwant my dream house to be by a lake with a big yard. Perhaps the climate wasnot warm enough, or maybe he found a better place to settle down. They lost my luggage and I didn't speak a word of English. I had to use my hands to explain myself. People understood what I meant and they helped me out.Catherine: My recent trip to Africa was one of the most amazing trips of my life, This was my second trip to Tanzania, Africa. We visited a lot of villages, some very remote that we had to travel by helicopter. In Tanzania, it's very different from America so there are no maps. So, even traveling in a helicopter, we didn't really know where we were going to go. We didn't really know the village names, so we just kind of had no destination and we got in the helicopter and just flew around. And if we saw some animals or some rooftops of hut houses, we said, "Let's go there" and we just kind of landed.Dennis: I have a lot of funny experiences on the airline as a flight attendant. Take the red line three stops. Cet off at the City Zoo stop. It’s pretty obvious.Ashley: thanks a lot.Jose: no problemAshley: oh, wait. Noe more thing. Soon city officials started planning ways to make cars slow down, and “calm” the traffic.Engwicht says we should think about streeets as our “outdoor living room.” Calming the traffic is just the beginning. In the future, streets will be safe places for childre again, and our neighbors will become our friends.Unit2, Lesson BVideo track 3-2-1Jennifer: I want my dream house to be by a lake with a big yard. Robert: "Go with the flovv," eh? So you're not nervous about the promotion?Claudia: I didn't say that. It just won't be the end of the world if I don't get it. What about you? Are you nervous about the new job?Roberto : Not really. He thought it was important to have well-defined goals, but Claudia said to Roberto should keep his options open, and “go with the flow.” Roberto agreed, but only if the “flow” followed his plan!选择是难,更何况是心灵选择。

The truth is,long trips are actually easier on your car than day-to-day driving, but a breakdown far from home can really destroy the fun. A few simple checks will help you to avoid many common problems. Two to four weeks before you go, get any major repairs done. If your car needs major repair or maintenance, do it at least one month before you go.That will allow plenty of time for any problems related to the repair to appear. Before you pack, give your car a good wash. Clean cars always seem to run better. Besides, who wants to travel in a dirty car? Make sure your tires are inflated to the proper pressure. Low pressure can be a problem. Follow the instructions for checking tire pressure in your owner's manual. You shouldalso check the spare tire. Make sure it is fully inflated and that other important spare parts are in the trunk. Before you go, open your suitcases and take one last look. Ask yourself,do you really need all that stuff? If there's anything you can do without, leave it home. If you're carrying lots of heavy objects, position them forward in the trunk and divide the weight evenly side to side. Cars don't have unlimited carrying capacity, so don't overload. There is no guarantee that unexpected things cannot happen. But if you've followed these guidelines, you've avoided a lot of potential problems. Relax and enjoy your trip! 6.People have concerns about driving on long trips ______. Important to noteis the departure tax, which is paid in Chinese currency, or RMB, only.Once you are in China, you can take many kinds of transportation like rail, sea and automobile. Railways are the major means of transportation throughout China. The trains are inexpensive, safe and well maintained operating between major cities. There are three types of trains, the Express option being thebest of the three. There are four varieties of fare: hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper and soft sleeper. Children under 3 feet tall travel free andthose under 4 feet pay a quarter of the fare. Teaching children to read is notpassing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent inactivities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot betaught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible."Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: it can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public examination. If teacher and learner roles are distinguishable, how can teaching aid the child in the quest for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children."When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.1.The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the firstparagraph is that ________.A. it is one of the most difficult school coursesB. too much time is spent in teaching about readingC. students spend endless hours in readingD. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance2.The teaching of reading will be successful if ________.A. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of readingB. teachers can improve conditions at school for the studentsC. teachers can devise the most efficient system for readingD. teachers can make their teaching activities observable3.The word "examination" at the end of Paragraph 3 mostprobably means "________".A. inquiryB. observationC. controlD. suspicion4.According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be adifficult task when ________.A. children become highly motivatedB. teacher and learner roles are identicalC. teaching helps children in the search for knowledgeD. reading enriches children's experience5.The main idea of the passage is that ________.A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping studentslearn to readB. teachers should encourage students to read as widely aspossibleC. reading ability is something acquired rather than taughtD. reading is more complicated than generally believedQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage or dialog.Society usually tends to focus on the negative side of inner-city schools. Many people like to stereotype (模式化) these schoolswhich, while these general statements may be true in some cases, tend to be worse most of the time. People think that the students of these schools receive inferior educations. My school, an inner-city school named St. Ignatius, is regarded as one of the best in the state. People also believe that violence occurs on a daily basis, both in the school itself and in the nearby city. I cannot even remember a serious fight at St. Ignatius. People who think that the teachers at inner-city schools lack love for their job worsen this typical stereotype even further. My teachers not only had a love for teaching, but they were also able to cultivate a love for learning in their students.Take Mrs. Borroni, my Spanish teacher, for example. She would often take time out of her class to tell her students about the numerous activities after class with which we should get involved. She loved her job so much that she stayed after school every day to moderate activities such as "Amnesty International" (an international organization that protects human rights) and the Spanish Club. Her students, including me, joined all of the clubs which she moderated just because she made them so interesting. After reading all of this, most people would argue that St. Ignatius should not be considered a true "inner-city school". While this may hold some truth, I am arguing that my life was greatly enriched simply because of the school's location in the middle of Cleveland, as opposed to a poor suburban area.6.What do people often think negatively about?A. Inner-city schools.B. Stereotypes.C. St. Ignatius.D. Violence.7.What can the author never remember seeing at St. Ignatius?A. Amnesty International.B. A serious fight.C. A Spanish club.D. Inferior students.8.What would Mrs. Borroni do after school?A. Give Spanish classes.B. Tell students about activities.C. Guide students in special groups.D. Help students love learning.9.Why might a reader of this article not view St. Ignatius as areal inner-city school?A. It is not in the middle of the city.B. It is in a poor suburban area.C. It enriched the author's life.D. It might be better than others.10.How does the author feel about inner-city schools?A. The stereotypes about them are not at all true.B. They are not necessarily all bad, as they can be good.C. They are much poorer than those in the suburbs.D. The students there are more enlightened.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage or dialog. Before going to high school, I had a very simple view of life. I usually did not think about the subjects of crime, poverty, or homelessness. As far as I knew, these things did not exist. The areaaround my school forced my eyes open as early as the first day of school. On the long bus ride through the city, I saw homeless dogs walking the streets. I also clearly recall seeing a homeless person picking through a trash can for the first time ever. The poverty of the area around my school made me see how truly lucky I was. I now began to appreciate everything which had been handed to me in life. In the long run, this led me to put a lot more faith in God because of all that He had given me. I started going to religious services more often. This also indirectly led to my involvement in the community around the school.Students' lives become enriched simply by attending an inner-city school. When a person is exposed to city life, many different advantages can be gained. For someone who had lived in the suburbs all his life, such as myself, a new style of living can be experienced. This alone expands one's views of life in general. The religious aspect of my life grew, I was easily able to get involved in community service projects, and I became much more aware of the dangers which exist in the city. Going to school in the city helped me to overcome the simple views I once had, and I am now better prepared to take on the challenges which await me in life.11.What sort of school does the author go to?A. This is not always easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be difficult to handle. If they get excited or upset then they may become more confused and more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary.Failing memory makes it difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. You must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep it simple and direct."Good morning, Mother. This is Fiona, your daughter. It's eighto'clock, so if you get up now, we can have breakfast downstairs."When the elderly person makes confused statements, e.g. about going out to his or her old employment or visiting a dead relative, correct him in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: "You don't work in the office any more. You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the dishes?"We rely heavily on the information provided by signposts, clocks, and newspapers. These assist us to organize and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these aids all the time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use reminder boards or diaries for important coming events and label the contents of different boxes. Many other aids such as information cards, old photos, addresses or shopping lists could help in individual cases.16.When do elderly people respond best?A. When they are calm and unhurried.B. When people tell them to be calm and unhurried.C. When their environment is calm and unhurried.D. When others are calm and unhurried.17.What should you encourage old people to do?A. To do as little as possible.B. To do as much as they can.C. To help others when needed.D. To be patient and not get upset.18.How should we provide information to old people with failingmemories?A. By being helpful.B. By being direct.C. By being sensitive.D. By being obvious.19.What is the purpose of information provided on such things assignposts?A. To help us organize and direct our behavior.B. To help us make use of newspapers.C. To help us correct other people.D. To help us understand statements.20.Besides diaries, what else can help old people remembersignificant coming events?A. Labels.B. Reminder boards.C. Information cards.D. It consumes the energy of thestudents and their mothers if not the whole family. As aconsequence, both parents and students see the goal of educationat each level is to successfully pass entrance examination to a goodschool. And this is where cramming schools, known as jukus come into play.Juku is a privately run education service offered for a fee. They come in all sizes. Some jukus are run by an individual. Some others are run by a business entity (实体) with a large number of teachers. Some schools actively seek teachers, and in some other schools, college and university students are hired. School children come to study at juku after school during the week and sometimes during weekends as well. The exact number of jukus and the number of students enrolled in the programs are unknown since the government statistics do not show any figure. In theory, there is no need for extra education of school subjects. The only primary agencies of formal education are regular schools. Therefore, there is no recognition of these education services by the government ministry or by the approved schools.Jukus fall generally into two types, shingaku juku and gakushuu juku. Shingaku juku is what is often referred to as cramming school where students who wish to take competitive examinations to enter schools come to prepare for the examination. Gakushuu juku offers extra courses to help students keep up with the subjects in school.1.What is the goal of education at each level for students in ajuku?2.Why do students have to pay for study at jukus?3.When do school children come to study at a juku? After school during the week and sometimes during w4.Which two groups do not recognize jukus? The government ministry and the approved schools.5.If you want to keep up with the subjects in school, which kindof juku should you choose?Gakushuu juku .Part 3 Reading Comprehension (Short Answer Questions) (每题: 4 分; 总分值:20 分) 小题得分对错我的答案主观1. 4 To successfully pass entranceexamination to a good school.
