Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet.Debate is a valuable way to practise communicating. It can also bring long-lasting rewards, especially for people working with Western businesses. The main activity of debate is presenting one's opinion and supporting it with evidence, such as statistics or facts. It is a way of persuasive communication.Charles Lebeau helped create the "Discover Debate" method. He says debate is important to understanding how people communicate in Western business. Successful debaters learn how togive their opinion, reasons and support. "What we are trying to do is to develop a kind of thinking or approach to discussion and how to interact (交流) with someone else's opinion, rather than brush their opinion aside."Debate skills are also important in selling a product, he says. In that situation, the judges are the customers. "So on Monday, for example, one company may come in and present their case to the customer and they'll make as strong a case as they can. On Tuesday, the next day, another company will come in and present their case to the customer. Usually the party that can present the strongest case wins."Debate also strengthens critical thinking. In other words, it helps students learn to ask questions and try to understand someone's reasons and evidence.Mr. Lebeau points out that successful debaters learn to listen carefully to what other people are saying. Then, they look for the weak points in someone else's opinion or argument. He says debate teaches a systematic way of questioning.Successful debaters also learn to think from someone else's point of view. Mr. Lebeau says debate can help broaden the mind. "There's an expression in English: don't criticize another person before you have walked in their shoes. I think the wonderful thing about debate is, it puts us in another person's shoes."第36题According to Paragraph 1, what is the purpose of debate?A.To bring long-lasting material rewards.B.To present evidence such as statistics and facts.C.To respond to questions in a systematic way.D.To persuade people to accept your opinions.第37题Why is debate important?A.It helps people understand others better.B.It allows people to present their opinions.C.It develops one's thinking and communicative competence.D.It gives one the opportunity to brush others' opinion aside.第38题What does the underlined word "case" in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.Container.B.Evidence.C.Problem.D.Product.第39题What can debaters benefit from "walking in another person's shoes"?A.Becoming more broad-minded.B.Developing critical thinking.C.Finding others' weak points.D.Trying out others' methods.上一题下一题(40~43/共20题)Part ⅢReading ComprehensionDirections:There are some reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet. We all love a hero, and rescue dogs are some of the biggest heroes of all. You will often find them going above and beyond duty to save someone, risking—and at times losing—their lives in the process.Rescue dogs are generally found in the Sporting and Hunting Groups, or from the traditional Herding Group. These types include the Bloodhound, Labrador Retriever, Newfoundland, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, and Belgian Malinois—all of which are chosen for search-and-rescue duty because of their amazing physical strength, loyalty, and their tendency for mental stability. These types also have a keen sense of hearing and smell—to better locate lost individuals—and are often able to access hard-to-reach areas. As highly trained animals, they serve in many different fields, including specialist Search, snow slide rescue, dead body location, and tracking. To overcome obstacles and succeed when performing the demanding duties of a search-and-rescue worker, a dog must display certain qualities. In addition to intelligence and strength, the dog must be swift, confident, easily trainable, adaptable, and have a high level of stamina (耐力) and endurance. A strong sense of group cooperation and an ability to engage in friendly play during "down" time is also required of search-and-rescue dogs.A rescue dog goes through many, many hours of intensive training to be fit for duty. Training is not for the faint-hearted. Certification training can take from two to three years, working three to four hours a day, three to six days a week, often in group, team-oriented sessions. Each search-and-rescue field requires different types of training. Rescue training, for instance, includes "air scenting"—where dogs are trained to smell the air for the victim's scent (气味) and then follow the scent to the person. This ability is crucial to finding victims trapped under collapsed buildings and snow slide.第40题Rescue dogs are chosen probably because ______.A.they are loyalB.they are braveC.they have amazing appearancesD.they have good eyesight第41题What does "faint-hearted" in Paragraph 5 mean?A.Courageous.B.Cowardly.C.Energetic.D.Slow.第42题Which ability is most important for dogs to rescue people trapped in snow?A.Sharp hearing.B.Swift movement.C.Extraordinary smelling.D.A strong memory. What is the passage mainly about?A.Selection process of rescue dogs.B.Qualities and training of rescue dogs.C.Risks rescue dogs are faced with.D.Types of tasks rescue dogs can perform.上一题下一题(44~47/共20题)Part ⅢReading ComprehensionDirections:There are some reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet.Eating an apple a day doesn't keep the doctor away, but it does reduce the amount of trips you make to the drug store per year. That's according to a new study that investigates whether there's any truth in the old saying.A team of researchers led by Dr Matthew Davis, of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, asked 8,399 participants to answer survey questions about diet and health. A total of 753 were apple eaters, consuming at least 149g of raw apple per day. The remaining 7,646 were classed as non-apple eaters. When both groups answered questions on trips to the doctor and trips to the drug store per year, the apple eaters were found to be 27% less likely to visit the druggist for drugs.Trips to the doctor were not significantly affected by apple consumption, though. "Evidence does not support that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. However, the small number of US adults who eat an apple a day does appear to use fewer prescription medications," the study concludes.Apple eaters were also found to be less likely to smoke and be more likely to have a higher educational attainment than non-apple eaters. While apples do not compete with oranges, they do contain some immune (免疫的) system-increasing vitamin C, which may be why apple-eaters visit the druggist less. With over 8mg of vitamin C per medium-sized fruit, an apple can provide roughly 14% your daily recommended intake.Previous studies have also linked apple consumption to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes (二型糖尿病), improved lung function and a lower risk of colon (结肠) cancer.第44题How many non-apple eaters answered survey questions in the research?A.149.B.7,646.C.753.D.8,399.第45题What is the conclusion of the study?A.Apple consumption has greatly reduced US adults' trips to the doctor.B.An apple a day does keep the doctor away.C.Apples are far more nutritious than oranges.D.A small number of US adult apple eaters tend to take less medicine. What can we learn from the passage?A.Apples are better than oranges.B.Apples do have some vitamin C to increase the immune system.C.Apples can help cure certain diseases.D.Apples can provide people with sufficient daily intake of energy.第47题What can be described as the writing style of this passage?A.Objective.B.Creative.C.Subjective.D.Persuasive.上一题下一题(48~51/共20题)Part ⅢReading ComprehensionDirections:There are some reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet.Sometimes I scratch my head when I read about the government's efforts to improve schools: new standards and tests to be applied, strict teacher evaluations, and threats of school closures and job losses. They frighten the school employees, not to mention the students. Instead of making people unable to solve problems or try new ideas—which is what fear does to us—research on school reform strongly suggests that policy-makers should encourage school leaders to take a more humane approach. In their study on the reform efforts of twelve Chicago public schools, Bryk and Schneider found that enabling positive social relationships between the adults was the key to successful school improvement and that trust was at the heart of those relationships.Trust in schools comes down to one thing: psychological safety or safety to speak one's mind, to discuss with openness and honesty what is and isn't working, to make collective decisions.Yet this kind of safety doesn't come easily to schools. According to Bryk and Schneider, the adults in school rely on each other to do their jobs correctly and with integrity (正直). The challenge is that our expectations are very diverse based on our unique backgrounds. At one school where I taught, each teacher had different expectations about how much extra effort teachers should put into their work—a big difference between the teachers who left after the last bell and those who worked into the evening. And when expectations are unconscious or unspoken, it becomes impossible for others to live up to them.We also make assumptions about the intentions behind a person's behavior. As we all know, assumptions are often wrong. For example, parents and teachers may think the principal made a particular decision based on his career advancement rather than what's best for the students. If we don't feel psychologically safe to question our assumptions and expectations, trust flies out the window and our relationships suffer.第48题According to Paragraph 1, why does the author scratch his head?A.Because he doesn't know what to do once schools are closed.B.Because he is not sure about the practicability of those new tests.C.Because he is concerned that many teachers will lose their jobs.D.Because he is not in favor of the government's reform efforts.第49题According to Bryk and Schneider, what was most important for successful school improvement?A.New standards and tests in schools.B.Positive social relationships.C.Strict teacher and student evaluations.D.Assistance of the government.第50题What is meant by trust in school?A.Freedom to express one's views.B.Extra effort teachers put into their work.C.Independence of the teachers in schools.D.Unconscious and unspoken expectations.第51题What does the author say about the assumptions made about the intentions behind a person's behavior?A.They should be trusted.B.They are often bold.C.They are often incorrect.D.They should be encouraged.上一题下一题(52~55/共20题)Part ⅢReading ComprehensionDirections:There are some reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet. An interesting project called Blue Zones is recording the lifestyle secrets of the communities with the highest concentrations of centenarians in the world. The people in the five regions in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the US that live to be 100 have a lot going for them. Genes probably play a small role, but these folks also have strong social ties, tightly-knit families and lots of opportunities to exercise. As we were examining the dietary secrets of the Blue Zones, as described in author Dan Buettner's latest book, The Blue Zones Solution, we were struck by how essential tea drinking is in these regions. In fact, Buettner's Blue Zones Beverage Rule—a kind of guideline summarized from his 15 or so years of studying these places—is: "Drink coffee for breakfast, tea in the afternoon, wine at 5 p.m."Science has plenty to say about the healthful virtues of green tea. Researchers are most enthusiastic about the components in green tea, as well as foods like cocoa. Why might they help so many Okinawans in Japan break 100? Some components in green tea can lower the risk of stroke, heart disease and several cancers. One review study also found that drinking green tea can slightly improve metabolism (新陈代谢).If you find yourself on the island of Ikaria, the Greek Blue Zone in the middle of the Aegean, you won't be offered any tea made with tea leaves. Instead, Ikarians typically make their daily cup of tea with just one fresh herb that they have picked themselves that day—either rosemary, wild sage, oregano, marjoram, mint or dandelion, all plants that may have anti-inflammatory (消炎的) properties, which may help lower blood pressure. This could explain Ikaria's very low dementia (痴呆) rate, since high blood pressure is a risk factor for the disease.第52题What does the underlined word "centenarians" in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.People who have secret lifestyles.B.People who enjoy physical exercise.C.People who are one hundred years old or older.D.People who carry, the gene for being slim.第53题According to Paragraph 3, what is the recommended time for tea drinking?A.In the morning.B.Any time of a day.C.In the early evening.D.In the afternoon.第54题What may the tea Ikarians drink daily help?A.To improve metabolism.B.To lower blood pressure.C.To lower life stress.D.To improve social relationships.第55题What might be the best title of the passage?A.Tea-Drinking TipsB.Lifestyle Secrets of IkariansC.Tea-Drinking Ceremony in OkinawaD.Blue Zones Solutions上一题下一题(56~60/共5题)Part ⅤDaily ConversationDirections: Pick out the appropriate expressions from the eight Choices below and complete the following dialogues by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.A.Can I speak to Mr. Johnson, pleaseB.I'll tell him you've calledC.I'll give him the messageD.What can I do for youE.Can you tell him that we can meet tomorrow afternoon in my officeF.Can I take a messageG.Can you ask him to call me back as soon as possibleH.That's rightWoman: Hello, Mr. Johnson's office.Man: Good morning. 1 ?Woman: Sorry, he's in a meeting at the moment. 2 ?Man: Yes. (阅读理解题)The comfort zone is our living, work, and social environments that we have grown accustomed to. It determines the type of friends we make or people we associate with. It determines a life style we accept or reject.Young people are very adaptable; they can adjust to changing comfort zones with ease. They can socialize with homeless people in the morning and be equally at ease at a formal banquet in the evening. As we age, the ability to adapt towide-ranging comfort zones becomes more difficult. Social prejudice narrows the comfort zone range. The comfort zone can be a decision making tool.Comfort zones are directly related to our dreams or goals, which is associated with self-fulfilling prophecy(预言). In order to grow and change, we must first be discontent with our current comfort zone. We must realize that all meaningful and lasting changes occur first in daydreaming and then they work their way into reality. The more clearly and vividly we fantasize our dream, the stronger and more real the pictures on the subconscious level will become. Once our subconscious accepts thisimage and its expectation, it will go to work, searching for a way to bring it into reality. If we feel that these things are too good for us, we will find ways to fail. If, however, we intentionally imagine the change we want, build an expectation of the change mentally and emotionally, and we will find ways to acquire dream and, when mentally ready, it will arrive faster than we ever thought possible. For some people, problems, suffering, poverty, bad breaks are their comfort zone. They find comfort in finding fault and complaining about their misfortune. The same is true for businesses. Management and workers have grown used to seeing things go wrong and expect them too. Management finds comfort in finding fault with workers and workers and vice versa.Note: If the comfort zone we are seeking is beyond our current income, then, we need to develop a service that has greater value than our current one. Money, power and influence are not goals; they are rewards ONLY for personal achievement.(1). (单选题) As one grows older, ______. (阅读理解题)Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feeling must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself o r herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism: they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in buildingself-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.(1). (单选题) What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?” in Para.1?(本题3.0分)A、Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.B、People’s shyness made them care too much about their appearance and actions.C、It’s natural that shy people don’t believe other’s compliments.D、Shy people think they are different from others.学生答案: B解析:得分: 3(2). Not long ago an unseasonable frost swept through coffee plantations there. The result affected people in many countries for a long time to come.At first, reports of serious damage were received. These led to a sharp rise in the price of coffee, which had not been a highly profitable crop. Growers in other countries made extra efforts to increase their exports to profit from the expected shortage. However, they were hampered by smugglers who wished to avoid government controls. The price of coffee fell slightly. Then large restaurants and hotels began to buy coffee to build up stocks for future use. The price rose sharply and public resistance developed. Housewives organized a boycott of coffee. This led to a rise in the price of tea and a fall in the price of coffee. Much to the dismay of growers, the price fell sharply. Their response was rather surprising. Instead of selling their stocks of coffee, they began to buy on the open market. Their motive was clear. They wanted to force the price of coffee up, and one way of doing this was to reduce the amount of coffee available for sale to the public.Luckily for coffee-drinkers, this move failed. Restaurants and hotels stopped buying coffee. Large numbers of small growers had to sell their crops to keep alive. The large growers found that they were buying more coffee than theywere growing. They abandoned their efforts and let the normal law of supply and demand decided the price. Meanwhile, millions of people had changed to cheaper drinks and would not switch back to coffee.(10分)16). There are few thing that men do or want to do, possess or want to possess, that have not, in addition to their mechanical or biological value, a symbolic value. All fashionable clothes are highly symbolic: materials, cut, and ornament are dictated only to a slight degree by considerations of warmth, comfort or practicability. The more we dress up in fine clothes, the more we restrict our freedom of action.Food is also highly symbolic. Specific foods are used to symbolize specific festivals. For example, moon cakes are eaten to celebrate the Chinese mid-autumn festival as the Chinese think that on the Mid-Autumn Day (August 15th of the lunar year), the moon is at its brightest. We select our furniture to serve as visible symbols of our taste, wealth, and social position. We trade in perfectly good cars for later models not always to get better transportation, but to give evidence to the community that we can afford it.I once had an eight-year-old car in good running condition.A friend of mine, a repairman who knew the condition of the car, kept urging me to trade it for a new model. “But why?”I asked, “The old car’s in fine shape still.” The repairman answered scornfully, “Yeah, but what the hell. All you’ve got is transportation.”Recently, the term “transportation car” has begun to appear in advertisements, for example, “4B Dodge----Runs perfectly well: transportation car. Leaving, must sell. $100”. Apparently it means a car that has no symbolic value and is good only for getting you there and bringing you back----a poor kind of vehicle indeed!(10分)21). Nowadays people often sell their old cars in good running condition and buy new ones _____(2分)(A) just to hold more people(B) because they want to celebrate specific festivals(C) just to show their wealth(D) because they are moving to a new place参考答案:C23). The term “transportation car” we now often come across in advertisements refers to a car which _____(2分)(A) is made by a transport company(B) transports goods only(C) has only practical value(D) is transported by other vehicles参考答案:C24). According to the writer, people eat specific food at specific time simply to ____(2分)(A) show their high social position(B) keep themselves healthy(C) celebrate a certain traditional occasion(D) prove that they are wealthy参考答案:C25). In the last paragraph of the passage, “Leaving, must sell.” Means that ______(2分)(A) the advertiser is on his way to the market for selling his car(B) the car has not any symbolic value at all(C) the car is ready to leave and has to be sold(D) the owner is going to leave the place so he has to sell the car参考答案:DIn the past twenty years, there has been an increasing tendency for workers to move from one country to another. While some newly independent countries have understandably restricted most jobs to local people, other countries have attracted and welcomed migrant workers. This is particularly the case in the Middle East, where increased oil incomes have enabled many countries to call in outsiders to improve local facilities. Thus the Middle East has attracted oil-workers from the U.S.A. and Europe. It has brought in construction workers and technicians from many countries, including South Korea and Japan. In view of the difficult living and working conditions in the Middle East, it is not surprising that the pay is high to attract suitable workers. Many engineers and technicians can earn at least twice as much money in the Middle East as they can in their own country, and this is a major attraction. An allied benefit is the low taxationor complete lack of it. This increases the net amount of pay received by visiting workers and is very popular with them.Sometimes a disadvantage has a compensating advantage. For example, the difficult living conditions often lead to increased friendship when workers have to depend on each other for safety and comfort. In a similar way, many migrant workers can save large sums of money partly because of the lack of entertainment facilities. The work is often complex and full of problems but this merely presents an increased challenge to engineers who prefer to find solutions to the problems rather than do routine work in their own country. One major problem which affects migrant workers in the Middle East is that their jobs are temporary ones. They are nearly always on contract, so it is not easy for them to plan ahead with great confidence. This is to be expected, since no country welcomes a large number of foreign workers as permanent residents. In any case, migrant workers accept this disadvantage, along with others, because of the considerable financial benefits which they receive.(10分)26). We’re taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but a lot of us get by just fine on less, and some of us actually sleep too much. A study out of the University of Buffalo reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to dir of stroke---probably as a result of anunderlying disorder that keeps them from sleeping soundly.Doctors have their own special sleep problems. Residents are famously short of sleep. It is not unusual for them to work 40 hours in a row without rest. They are not in the least worried about it, confident they can still deliver the highest quality of medical care. But an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the morning after 24 hours of sleeplessness, a person’s motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is drunk. Curiously, surgeons who believe that operating under the influence of alcohol is grounds for sacking often don’t think twice about operating without enough sleep.“I could tell you horror stories, ”says Jaya Agrawal, president of the American Medical Student Association, which runs a website for residents. Some are terrifying. “I was operating after being up for over 36 hours, “ one writes. “ I literally fell asleep standing up and nearly planted my face into the wound.”“ Practically every surgical resident I know has fallen asleep at the wheel driving home from work,” writes another. “I know of three who have hit parked cars. Another hit a ‘ Jersey gate’ on the New Jersey Expressway, going 105km/h.”“Your own patients have become the enemy,” writes a third, because they are “the one thing that stands between you and a few hours of sleep.”The U.S. controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is in place for doctors, patients are on their own. If you’re worried about the people treating you or a loved one, you should feel free to ask how many hours of sleep they have had and if more rested staffers are available.51 Sleep is a funny thing because ____________.A. the longer one sleeps, the less sound sleep he getsB. the more sleep one gets, the more likely a stroke occursC. many people stick to about eight hours of sleep to stay fineD. many people who sleep six hours a night still feel energetic in the day52 A surgeon who has worked 40 hours in a row without sleep ___________.A. can still provide quality medical careB. will remain alert because he is used to itC. may ignore the potential risk of insufficient sleepD. should be fired if he continues the medical operation53 According to one resident, they are short of sleep because ____________.A. they are too tired to fall asleepB. they are forbidden to sleep at workC. they are kept by treating their patientsD. they are too worried about oversleeping54 They resident who hit a “Jersey gate”on the New Jersey Expressway must have________.A. fallen asleepB. drunk too muchC. been driving too longD. avoided hitting parked cars55. There is a common stereotype that bottles are harmful to the environment. People often associate bottled water with pollution and excessive waste. However, the truth is that plastic bottles can be recycled and reused, which can greatly reduce their negative impact on the environment. In recent years, many countries have started implementing bottle deposit systems to encourage people to recycle. In these systems, consumers pay a small fee when purchasing a bottled beverage. This fee is refunded when the empty bottle is returned to a designated recycling center. This not only encourages recycling but also promotes a cleaner environment. For example, in Germany, where a bottle deposit system has been in place since 2003, more than 98% of plastic bottles are recycled. This has resulted in a significant reduction in plastic pollution.Plastic bottles, especially those made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), can also be recycled to produce polyester. This recycled polyester, known as rPET, can be used to make clothing, bags, and other products. By recycling plastic bottles into useful products, the demand for single-use plastics is reduced, thus reducing the amount of plastic waste generated.Additionally, plastic bottles can be repurposed and used in creative ways. For example, some artists have used plastic bottles to create sculptures and artwork. Others have repurposed them as planters or bird feeders. These innovative ideas not only give plastic bottles a second life but also inspire people to think creatively about waste reduction. In conclusion, while bottles may have a negative image in terms of their impact on the environment, they are not inherently harmful. Proper recycling and reuse can greatly mitigate their negative effects. By implementing bottle deposit systems, recycling plastic bottles into useful products, and encouraging creative repurposing, we can work towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.答案一:1. (阅读理解题)How do you acquire confidence? Speak English with friends first because with them you can speak freely without feeling shy. Then try your ability with your teachers and with foreigners if you have an opportunity to meet them. Don’t be afraid of mistakes. Nobody is above mistakes; and don’t be afraid to ask questions about things you don’t know. This is the way to acquire knowledge. Not until you begin to think in English rather than Chinese can you be said to know the language. This is not a superhuman achievement—only a question of practice. Thinking in English will help you to truly understand how the language is spoken. Read novels to build vocabulary, thus gaining confidence. Start with small volumes of 30 to 40 pages. Write down any new word you discover and look it up in your dictionary. Learn how to use the new word by making sentences with it. Bring the word to your teacher to have it explained more fully. Don’t be angry when you learn a new word today and forget it tomorrow. To forget is a natural process; to remember is unnatural and requires effort. Of 10 new words learnt in a day, only two or three will remain in the memory. The others you will forget and have to relearn. When learning them for the second time, they will come more easily, and this time you probably will remember nearly all of them. A small minority, however, may elude you again, and have to be learnt for a third time. Constant repetition is necessary.(1). (阅读理解题)The other day I asked a group of my students how they like to learn English. The first person to speak up was Max. This was no surprise—unlike many Hong Kong students, Max has never been reluctant to speak. “I like to learn by speaking,” said Max. “I specially love to speak to native English speakers when I can find them. I try to talk to my friends in English, too. Um, what else? I like to watch TV and movies in English, and I like to learn new words by hearing them.”“How about you?” I asked Veronica. “Do you like to learn in these ways?”“Oh, no,” she said, “I could never learn like that. I need to have a textbook, and I like the teacher to explain everything to me. I have a notebook, and I write everything down. I like to study grammar, and I like to learn by reading. Max says he likes to learn new words by hearing them. I like to learn new words by seeing.”Veronica’s classmate Jackie was more similar to Max. She said she liked to learn by watching movies and videos. She also liked playing games, listening to cassettes, talking in pairs and practicing English outside the classroom. The last person to give his opinion was Joseph. Like Veronica, he liked to study grammar, although he didn’t feel the same need to have a teacher. He liked to learn independently to find his own mistakes, and to read books and newspapers. These four people correspond to four learner “types” that a former colleague of mine, Ken Willing, found in a study he did some years ago. Max can be classified as a “communicative” learner, Veronica as “authority-oriented”, Jackie as a “concrete” learner, and Joseph as an “analytical” one.(1). (阅读理解)Successful and happy distance learners have a few characteristics in common. Compare yourself to the following list to determine whether or not online classes are a good fit for your personality and habits. 1. Successful distance learners do just as well, if not better, without people looking over their shoulder. While some people need teachers to keep them motivated and on-task, distance learners are able to motivate themselves. They realize that they will never be face-to-face with the people who give them assignments and grade their work, but they don’t need others to encourage them. The most successful students are self-motivated and set their own goals. 2. Successful distance learners never (or at least rarely) put off their assignments or wait until the last moment to write their papers. These students enjoy the freedom of working at their own pace and appreciate the ability to complete their work in as much time as it takes them, instead of waiting for an entire class. However, they understand that putting off their work too often can end up adding months, if not years, to their studies. 3. Successful distance learners have good reading comprehension skills. While most people learn by listening to lectures and taking notes, the majority of distance learners are expected to master material through reading alone. Although some distance learning courses offer video recordings and audio clips, most programs require that students understand a large amount of information that is only available through written text. These students are able to comprehend texts at the college level without the direct guidance of a teacher. 4. Successful distance learners can resist constant distractions. Whether it’s the phone ringing off the hook, the kids screaming in the kitchen, or the temptation of TV programs, everyone faces distractions. Successful students know how to filter out the constant disturbances that threaten their progress. They feel comfortable turning down an invitation or letting the machine pick up the phone when they know there is work to be done. (本题10分)1. (单项选择)Which of the following is NOT included in the successful distance learners’ characteristics? (本题2分)A. Being self-motivated.B. Being self-disciplined.C. Being with good reading comprehension skills.D. Being easy to distract attention.答案: D解析: 无2. (单项选择)If putting off his work too often, what will happen to this student? (本题2分)A. (阅读理解)If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise-and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japanappeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. (The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.) Contraction of front and side parts was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and-seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple remedy to the contraction normally associated with age-using the head. The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant. Matsuzawa’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen th e brain cells need. “The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,” he says. “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don’t rely on pocket calculators.” (本题10分)1. (单项选择)The team of doctors wanted to find out __________.
