Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies to negotiate on their behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategiesis to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this becomes too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses theirrequest , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be competitiveD impress rivals16 Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy optionD protect their company’s situation17 Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you shouldA adapt your style to the people you are talking toB make the other side feel superior to youC dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D try to make the other side like you18 According to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you toA gain their friendshipB speed up the negotiationsC plan your next move.D convince them of your point of view19 Deals sometimes fail becauseA negotiations have gone on too longB the companies operate in different waysC one party risks more than the other.D the lawyers work too slowly20 Dr Cohen mentions children’s negotiation techniques to show that you shouldA be prepared to try every routeB try not to make people feel guiltyC be careful not to exhaust yourselfD control the decision-making process.

Do not mark any letter twice. In the past, the concept of marketing emphasized sales. The producer or manufacturer made a product he wanted to sell. …example… Basically, selling the product would be accomplished by sales promotion, which included advertising and personal selling8 Distribution consisted of transportation, storage, and related services such as financing, standardization and grading, and the related risks. The modern marketing concept encompasses all of the activities mentioned, but it is based on a different set of principles 9 In other words, goods should be produced only if they can be sold. Therefore, the producer should consider who is going to buy the product --- or what the market for the product is ---before production begins. 10Marketing now involves first deciding what the customer wants, and designing and producing a product that satisfies these wants at a profit to the company 11 .This is much more difficult since it involves human behavior 12 . Thus, demand and market forces are still an important aspect of modern marketing, but they are considered prior to the production process.A.It describes to the notion that production can be economically justified only by consumption.B.In addition to sales promotion, marketing also involved the physical distribution of the product to the places where it was actually sold.C.Marketing is as important in today’s economy as the production of goods and services.D.Production, on the other hand, is mostly an engineering problem.E.Instead of concentrating solely on production, the company must consider the desires of the consumer.F.This is very different from making a product and then thinking about how to sell it.G.Marketing was the task of figuring out how to sell the product.PART THREEQuestions 13-18Read the following article about a business technique called benchmarking from a business magazine and the questions on the opposite page. For question 13-18, mark one letter (A,B,C or D) on your Answer Sheet for the answer you choose. The expression 'benchmarking' has become one of the fashionable words in current management discussion. The Term first appeared m the United States in 1970s but has now gained world-wide. B u t w h at exactly does it mean and should your company be practicing it?One straightforward definition of benchmarking comes from Chris Teller. Managing director of a New Zealand-based consultancy firm specializing in this area. "Benchmarking involves learning about your own practices, learning about the best practices of other, and then making changes for improvement that will enable you to meet or heat the best in the world. " The essential element is not simply imitatingwhat other companies do but being able to adapt the best of other firms’ practices to your own situation.Instead of aiming to improve only against previous performance and scores, companies can use benchmarking to inject an element of imagination and common sense into their search for progress. It is a process which forces companies to look closely at those activities which they may have been taking for granted and comparing them with the activities of other, world-beating companies Self-criticism is at the heart of the process, although in some cases this may upset managers who are reluctant to question long-established practices. The process of identifying 'best practice' in other companies does not just mean looking closely at your competitors. It might also include studying companies which use similar processes to your own. Even though they are producing different goods. The point is to look at the process rather than the product. For example, Italian computer company Arita wanted to improve the quality of its technical manuals and handbooks. Instead of looking at manuals produced by other computer companies. Arita turned to a publisher of popular handbooks such as cookery books, railway timetables and car repair manuals. As Arita's Technical Director Claudio Benelli says, "All of these handbooks are communicating complex information in a simple way-exactly what we are aiming to do. And in many cases they succeed far better than an)' computer company."There is some disagreement between benchmarking specialists as to the best methods to follow when starting a benchmarking exercise in your firm. Everyone agrees that the process must have the full approval of senior management but that it is best carried out by a comparatively small team. Some consultants feel this should be as small as three people, but most favor a team of between five and eight, at least one of whom should have some prior knowledge of the benchmarkingprocess. In practice this often means bringing in an outside consultant - at least at the beginning. Once the team is assembled, there can be anything from three to five formal stages in the process -different companies have developed different approaches - but, whatever the exact technique, benchmarking can only work if everyone in the company, from top to bottom, is committed to change.13.According to the writer, benchmarking must always involve A.changing your activities on the basis of new information.B.copying exactly what your competitors do.C.identifying the best company in your market.D.collaborating with other companies in the same field. 14.Some managers ma)' resist benchmarking becauseA.it takes their activities for grantedB.it makes them examine the way they work.C.it makes others question their efficiency.D.it gives them a lot of extra work.15.What sort of companies should you compare yours with?A.those producing similar goodsB.those communicating most effectivelyC.1 hose using similar processesD.those leading the domestic market16.Arita found that a publishing company couldA.make more money than a computer firm.B.produce technical manuals for them.C.show them how to improve their own manuals.D.help them move into new markets.17.Benchmarking specialists agree that in order to succeed there must beA.a team of no more than three people.B.total support, from top managers.C.a fixed timetable for the process.D.an outside consultant in the team.18.What is the writer's purpose in writing this article?A.to recommend the process of benchmarkingB.to criticise firms that do not carry out benchmarkingC.to give factual information about benchmarkingD.to explain why benchmarking does not suit every firm PART FOURQuestions 19-33Read the following text about Thailand.Choose the best word from the lists on the opposite page to complete each gap.For question 19-33 mark one letter A,B,C or D on your Answer Sheet. These days, Thailand is arguably one of the best bargains for business travelers in Asia. Read the article below about the changing role of human resources departments. The best person for the jobEmployees can make a business succeed or fail, so the people who choose them have a vital role to play.Employees are a company’s new ideas, its public face and its main asset. Hiring the right people is therefore a significant factor in a company’s success.(0) G If the human resources department makes mistakes with hiring, keeping and dismissing staff, a business can disappear overnight. Many companies now realise that recruiting the best recruiters is the key to success.Sarah Choi, Head of HR at Enco pic, believes that thinking commercially is a key quality in HR. Every decision an HR manager makes needs to be relevant to advancing the business. (8) ...C.....That’s no longer the case. HR managers have to think more strategically these days. They continually need to think about the impact of their decisions on the bottom line. (9).....F... For example,a chief executive will expect the HR department to advise on everything from the headcount to whether to proceed with an acquisition. Why do people go into HR in the first place? Choi has a ready answer. I think most people in the profession are attracted by a long-term goal.(10)....D......Nothing happens in the company which isn’t affected by or doesn’t impact onits employees, so the HR department is a crucial part of any business. Not all operational managers agree. An informal survey of attitudes to HR departments that was carried out last year by a leading business journal received comments such as "What do they actually contribute?"(11).....A..... As Choi points out, salaries have never been higher and, in addition, HR managers often receive substantial annual bonuses.Despite the financial rewards, HR managers often feel undervalued, and this is a major reason for many leavingtheir jobs.(12)...E......However, a lack of training and development is a more significant factor. These days, good professional development opportunities are considered an essential part of an attractive package,Choi explains.A But rising levels of remuneration demonstrate that the profession’s growing importance is widely recognised.B At one time, a professional qualification was required in order to progress to the top of HR.C Other departments and senior executives used to see HR managers as having a purely administrative role.D Since it’s one of the few areas where you can see the whole operation, it can lead to an influential role on the board.E Being seen as someone who just ticks off other people’s leave and sick days does not help build a sense of loyalty.F They therefore need to be competent in many aspects of a company’s operations.G On the other hand, recruiting the wrong staff can lead to disaster.这篇文章的标题有些misleading,“The best people for the job”,还以为是招人的标准。

(example)______I_____.ICO organization helps coffee producers and promotes coffee conumption worldwide.ICO estimates that world production next year will reach97.5million bags.11.3million bags higher than the current year.(8)____________.As the largest producing country,Brazil is particularly important in the coffee world.In1994Brazil was responsible for25%of world production,Colombia was next with13.4%,Indonesia had7.5%,Mexico4.7%,Guatemala3.8% and Ethiopia and Vietnam were equal with3.4%.Coffee is a tough crop, and can be grown in areas where it is difficult or impossible to grow other crops.(9)However,disease is always problem for coffee production,as we can see in some parts of South America at the moment.ICO is active in educating farmers about avoiding disease and dealing with problems when they occur. The distribution chain varies from country to country, explains Pablo Dubois. In most countries the smaller farmers sell their crop to a local trader, who then sells it on to exporters. There are, however, other distribution systems.(10)____________.Some countries, like Vietnam, have special government marketing organizations for coffee.Coffee prices often vary greatly from one year to the next.In1997,for example, there was a large rise in the world price, which was immediately felt by the consumer.Rising prices always result in a drop in sales, which will have a bad effect on those developing countries, which are highly dependent on foreign exchange from coffee exports.(11)____________.In the opinion of Pablo Dubois, the biggest problem for his organization is to create greater consumer awareness of the different varieties of coffee and different ways of preparing it.(12)____________.ICO is therefore concentrating its promotional activities on Russia and China. It is also encouraging environmentally friendly coffee production, and last year’s seminar on coffee and the environment created a lot of interest. The future looks bright for the coffee industry. It is estimated that consumption over the next few years will continue to rise steadily.New markets like Eastern Europe and China are expected to develop fast.A.As a result, the membership now represents94%of all exporters and60%of all importers.B.In some of these countries, this can amount to as much as50%of all export earning.C.In North America, most consumers already have above average knowledge of the range available.D.For example, frost and wind are particularly damaging to coffee crops.rger coffee growers, for example, frequently export directly.F.The main reason for this is higher Brazilian output as production recovers from weather damage to crops.G.It is cultivated in mountain regions which can only be reached by animal transport, and in other difficult areas where modern agricultural equipment cannot be used.H.This is because there is a demand for coffee in Germany, and it is also sold in the UK and in the US.I.This make the coffee industry fairly universal, according to Pablo Dubois,Head of the International Coffee Organization(ICO),based in London.PART THREEQuestions13-20Read the article below about stress management, and answer questions13-20on the opposite page.A Lesson In Stress ManagementDemands placed on us at work can often lead to considerable worry and discomfort. There are, however, ways of protecting ourselves from the stress we face at work.We interviewed Jane Collard,a consultant in stress management.1.In Jane Collard’s opinion, stress is becoming an increasingly common feature of the workplace.Stress is a highly individual reaction, which varies considerably from person to person, and it is difficult for some employees to avoid it.Indeed, stress is regarded by many as part of the organizational culture of our institutions:it comes with the job.Recent figures indicate that time taken off work because of stress has increased by500per cent since the1950s.Undoubtedly, changes in working conditions have led to greater pressure at work at all levels. With reductions in staffing, workloads for individual employees have increased. In addition, many employees are left worrying about the security of their jobs.2.On the stress management courses that she runs,Jane Collard tries to make the trainees realise that stress in itself is not harmful.Everyone needs a certain level of stress to enable them to feel motivated and to perform effectively.A complete absence of stress can be as damaging as overstress, since it can make people lose interest in their work, and even lead to depression. The difficulties occur when the amount of stress rises above a level which is healthy for a particular individual. If this happens, the effects are very obvious and the trainees are taught to recognize the signs.Stress may be expressed physically, for example through headaches and tiredness,or through emotional problems such as depression.A person suffering from stress may also start to behave differently, and can be difficult to deal with.3.While it may not always be possible to prevent stress, there are a number of ways in which it can be controlled. The first thing that the trainees learn is how to manage their time effectively. This involves, first of all, setting realistic goals for both the short and long term.Once this framework has been established, tasks are then prioritised on a daily basis. The trainees are also reminded that when they are under pressure the less important items should be left, and they should never hesitate to delegate.Everyone is encouraged to look at ways of reducing‘wasted time’,for example by grouping similar tasks together or dealing with items immedkiately.4.Jane feels that one of the most useful features of the course is that it enables trainees to deal with those demands or deadlines that they regard as unreasonable. They are encouraged to avoid being defensive, but at the same time they are advised not to be afraid of saying‘no’.They are asked to give reasons only if necessary. The training helps them to foresee difficult situations or unwanted demands, and they learn how to prepare themselves mentally.Everyone is encouraged not to get stuck in negative thought patterns, where stress can feed a circular sense of helplessness. One solution they discuss is to think of a more encouraging alternative for each negative message. They learn, for example,to remind themselves that nothing terrible happens when a demand is refused or a deadline missed.Life goes on.Questions13-16For questions13-16,choose the best title for each numbered paragraph from the list below. For each numbered paragraph1-4,mark one letter(A-G)on your Answer Sheet.Do not use any letter more than once.A Higher stress levels among top managersB Coping with stress through a positive attitudeC Time lost at work through sicknessD Causes of increased stress in the work environmentE Explanations for missed deadlinesF stress reduction through better organisationG Typical problems associated with stress13Paragraph114Paragraph215Paragraph316Paragraph4Questions17—20Using the information in the text, complete each sentence17-20with a phrase A-G from the list below. For each question17-20,mark one letter(A-G)on your Answer Sheet.Do not use any letter more than once.17Most people agree that the recent increase in stress is due to changes in____________.18The trainees are taught that the right level of stress at work is important for good.19Trainees learn that one way of limiting stress is by deciding upon.20One of the most important parts of the course is learning how to react toA levels of performanceB shorter deadlinesC employment practicesD higher levels of sicknessE unfair demandsF successful management structureG practical targetsPART FOURQuestions21-35·Read the text below about job prospects at the Provincial Bank.·Choose the correct word A,B,C,or,D on the opposite page to fill each gap.·For each question21-35,mark one letter(A,B,C,or D)on your Answer Sheet.Employment Opportunities for Graduates with the Provincial BankThe Provincial Bank is one of the biggest(example)____________institutions in the U.K. With its1,900branches and58,000employees,it has(21)____________a household name.
专业培训老师认为BEC听力中最基础、最重要的是word,所以建议同学把vocabulary部分加强,a good range of vocabulary对应考会很用帮助。
My name is... I work for...
1、we wanna hold your hand
(1) shake off its unglamorous image摆脱其乏味的形象。
shake off摆脱,例如:shake off responsibility摆脱责任。
(2) associations with something rather dishonest
(3) retain an air of glamour 显得很风光,retain an air of 带着??的样子,例如retain an air of cheerfulness保持一种欢喜的样子。

Read this text about the problem of Barclays Bank. The New LookWhen Sir John Quinton, then chairman of Barclays Bank, was given his marching orders last April, Britain's biggest bank thought it had found the scapegoat for its sudden fall from grace and profits ,Andrew Buxton, the bank's managing director and an offspring of its founding families ,was a pointed chairman and chief executive ,with effect from January 1st of next year. It seemed a glorious victory for good business management. Is the problem solve do Certainly not.1. No sooner had Mr. Buxton been appointed chairman and chief executive than bigshareholders and quite a few board members began quietly to question his ability to do both jobs at once. Now ,weeks before he is due to move up ,the questions are louder. Many wish the bank had seized the opportunity Lasy April to separate the two top posts. And privately. Some wonder whether Mr. Buxton is the right man for either one. What started as a thoroughly British Whispering Campaign has assumed much bigger dimensions..2. Mr. Buxton has suffered it all ,but in truth he has no way out. After weeks of talking to shareholders and discussing with his non-executive directors ,he has accepted that Barclays will separate the top jobs sometimes in the future. How7 He says that there has been no formal discussion of it in the boardroom.3. Formally or informally, it has been agreed that Mr. Buxton will not be moved from his chairmanship, and thatBarclays must find a strong chief executive. Opinions differ as to whether this person should be chosen from inside or outside the bank. Several board members believe that there is no ideal candidate inside Barclays.4. Neither shareholders nor non-executive directors want to wait long. A: Our manager considers that our employees' morale is not very high recently, and I'm sure that you can feel that, too. B: Yes, it is not a good sign for the development of our company. It is not hard for us to find many signs reflecting this problem. First many managers complain that their subordinates usually do not finish their tasks till the deadline, therefore making them hard to control the overall situation.A: I've heard of that, too. And they also told me that the employees are not as active as before, they contribute very little at the brainstorm meeting. But you know, as an advertisement company, creative and original ideas really mean a lot to us.B: That's right. No wonder our boss is so concerned. What's worse, I'm afraid that our staff lacks sense of identity or sense of belonging to our company, and that may be the root of all the other problems.A: Well, I think your analysis is quite insightful, so we must take some measures for this situation. High work efficiency should be encouraged more in our company, and employees should realise that initiative can be beneficial to everyone.B: Right. And I think they can be more active and offer more smart ideas if given more material incentives, after all we have to admit that sometimes this is really the most effective way to encourage them.A: That sounds quite reasonable, but I also think that carrying forward our company culture to arouse their sense of belonging can be even more helpful in the future. After all, material stimulation won't last as long as spiritual one. B: I totally agree. Let's hope that we can run our business better after this round of reform.1、What's the most common reason for the low morale in a company?2、Do you finish your work in advance or only a few hours beforethe deadline?3、Which do you think is more effective to encourage employees, material incentives or special awards like Best Employee of the Year?4、What is the ideal or core value of your company?5、Do you recognise your company culture? Why? A: Our company is doing a great job in recent years and the market is also booming nowadays, so managers of the high level are considering expanding our business to other regions in China.B: I think it's really a good time to explore new market, but before we start, we should make some comprehensive analysis and then decide which regions deserve us taking risks.A: Sure. But as the third largest country in the world, there are many regions left untouched for us. Could you recommend some of the most promising regions?B: Well, the western region developing campaign has launched for a period of time, and the economy is becoming ever prosperous there, so it can be our first choice. Then the central part of China has the largest population, so it can also be a huge market for us. Finally we cannot neglect the northeast part, for the economic situation is getting much better there, so it is also reasonable to reoccupy this market. A: You have some very good points. Then can you think of some features of these regions which we should pay attention to before entering markets there?B: First we should take note of the special tastes of the minority groups in the West, for they may have more diversified tastes compared with other regions of China. Then we must notice the rather low buying power of the central part, because most of customers are peasants. Finally the extreme cold weather in the northeast also calls for our attention.A: Right, that means we should do some extra work in package and storage to avoid unnecessary damages.B: I am sure that we can expect good performances in the new market as long as we take everything into consideration.6、Does your company have any plans for expansion?7、Which region of your country do you think has the largest consumption potential? Why?8、Which do you think is more fatal for a company's development,a good strategy or implementation capacity?9、Is your company brave enough to explore new market all the time?10、Which part of the country can bring the highest profits to your company? B: Sure. First this person must have a university's diploma in finance at the least, and it is preferable if he has a master's degree. Then he or she needs to master the usage of Excel and PPT, because these two sets of software are used very frequently in our daily work.A: And anything else?B: I was thinking that maybe an experienced person is more desirable than a grad. Do you agree?A: I totally agree; we really need someone who can get down to work at once. And as for channels to put up our job notice, I think the job-hunting websites like Chinahr can be helpful and some of them are free of charge.B: Right. But someone may not have access to the Internet, so we still have to publish advertisement in the newspaper and participate in some recruitment fairs.A: OK. Hope we can find the right person with all the efforts we make.11、Do you think your team needs new members?12、Are you satisfied with your performance during your last interview? How do you plan to improve your performance? 13、How many interviews have you attended before you found yourpresent job?14、Which channel do you use most for job hunting, Internet, newspaper or recruitment fair?15、Have you ever attended any recruitment fair? What's your impression? A: It's April now, time for our performance evaluation of each department, and this time we will start our evaluation from the sales department.B: Yes, as our routine, we will evaluate salespersons' performance according to three categories, namely, their sales figures of last year and the rank among all members; numbers of active clients they have, including the clients our salespersons gained or lost and the background and strength of these clients; and their operation costs.A: Could you please say more clearly?B: Sales figures are the direct indicator of a salesman's performance, and we should compare the figures with that of other years and with that of other persons, so we can know the trend of the sales. Clients means profits for our company, so the numbers and quality are of great importance to our development.A: I see. And their operation costs also have a direct influence on our price, right? I guess these figures will give us a comprehensive analysis of their last year's performances. B: That's for sure, we have adopted these categories for several years and the effect of such evaluation has been proved. But this year I hope we can find some new measures to encourage our salesperson.A: So what can we do? ... I'm thinking of giving the Salesperson of the Year Award to spur them to work harder. Apart from spirit encouragement, we may also offer higher sales commission for those with the highest sales figures. B: Speaking of monetary incentive, we may provide bonus for their cost-saving behaviour as well.A: Good idea! I'll report our discussion to our manager, and I'm sure he will like it.16、How much do you know about performance evaluation?17、Does your company do performance evaluations?18、Would you like to make plans every day and carry out what you've planned strictly?19、What will happen if you fail to complete your task withina given period of time?20、Do you regard yourself as an ambitious person?21、Why do some people always have a better performance than we do?答案:SPEAKING1、I think it's the lack of team spirit, because poor cooperation among members causes bad performances and low spirit.2、● I usually try to complete my task as soonas possible in case that I won't finish it on time.● I will make a plan for my task and finish it according to the schedule.
