Nie Er---a great Chinese composer Nie Er, a great Chinese composer, was born in Yunnan in 1912. He showed musical talent from a very early age and learned to play the erhu, the flute and several other musical instruments. He lived a hard life in his childhood and it was his hard work that helped him finish his school. Having graduated, he was devoted to the war against Japanese. By the time he was 23, he had composed more than 30 pieces of good songs including the well-known March of the Volunteers, which was chosen as our national anthem. Unfortunately, he was drowned when he was swimming in Japan in July 1935, making the whole nation in deep sorrow. Nie Er is considered as one of the most influential musicians in the history of China and will be remembered by the Chinese people forever.
