Text AHalf a dozen radio stations about the face of the globe crackled sparks of electricity from capital and into millions of humble homes; peace came through the air and was simultaneous over all the face of the earth. The great ceremony on the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay was anticlimax. The greatest fleet in the world lay amidst the greatest ruins in the world under a dark and cheerless covering of clouds. The USS Iowa was on one side of the Missouri, the USS South Dakota on the other. A tattered flag with thirty-one stars was hung on one of the turrets of the battleship —the flag of the infant republic, which Commodore Perry brought with him to the same bay almost a hundred years before. Above the mainmast fluttered the battle flag of the Union of today. The deck was crowded with the American technicians. There were a Russian with a red band about his cap and a Tass newsreel man who insisted on crawling in among the main actors to get his shots; there was a Canadian general who spoiled his part and signed on the wrong line; there was a carefully tailored Chinese general from Chungking.Half a dozen Japanese were piped over the side of the Missouri, but for the purpose of history and in every man’s memory there were only two —the general, Umezu, and the statesman, Shingemitsu. Umezu was dressed in parade uniform, all his ribbons glistening, and his eyes blank, but you could see the brown pockmarks on his cheeks swelling and falling in emotion.Shingemitsu was dressed in a tall silk hat and a formal morning coat as if he were attending a wedding or a funeral. He had a wooden leg, and he limped along the deck; when he began to climb to the veranda deck where the peace was to be signed, he clutched the ropes and struggled up with infinite pain and discomfort.Shingemitsu and Umezu were brought forward, and, after a few carefully chosen words beautifully spoken by General MacArthur, they signed their names to a document marking an end to the Japanese Empire. When they had signed, the generals and admirals of all the other nations put their signatures to the document, and peace, if peace it was, had come.1. The document was signed on[A] the USS Iowa. [B] the USS South Dakota.[C] the battleship Missouri. [D] didn’t mention.2. In the second paragraph, “A tattered flag with thirty-one stars” is of[A] USS. [B] the infant USA.[C] today’s USA. [D] the greatest fleet.3. When portraying Umezu and Shingemitsu, the author focused on all the following EXCEPT[A] facial expression. [B] appearance.[C] motions. [D] inner activity.4. By saying “and peace, if peace it was, had come”, the author implied that[A] he valued the signature ceremony.[B] he was sure of the peace coming.[C] he suspected that the signature meant the real end of war.[D] he believed the signature ceremony would bring peace.Text BLeft unfettered(无拘无束的), Anthony Konieczka, 9 years old, would happily thumb away at his Game Boy Advance or PlayStation 2 from the minute he gets up to the moment he crawls intobed, 14 bleary-eyed(睡眼惺忪的)hours later.Anthony’s basement is stocked with traditional toys — board games, puzzles, art supplies —and as far as he is concerned, they are relics of Christmases past. His sister Michaely, 6 years old, still likes dressing her Barbies. But once she starts playing Game Boy it’s hard to get her away.Play patterns like this could grab another Christmas for the toy department. Through September, toy sales were down 5% compared with the first nine months of last year, according to the NDP Group. Meanwhile, the video-game industry is heading for another record year. Thanks to hot new games like Halo 2 for the Xbox, the industry is light-years ahead of the toy business when it comes to buzz. With distractions such as instant messaging, cell phone games and iPods angling for kids’ minds and allowances, the digital revolution is making life miserable for the toy industry. While some hard-to-find toys emerge every holiday season, toymakers are heading into this one without a monster hit. Indeed, there has not been a Furby-style frenzy in years. Of 10 toy segments only two, arts and crafts and dolls, have generated sales growth over a recent 12 month period. Some of the weakest categories like construction sets and action figures are the ones aimed at boys, who suffer the most blisters from the video games. Analysts expect one of the top stocking stuffers this season to be not a traditional toy but the new generation of Nintendo’s Game Boy, the DS, which hit stores last week. The deeper issue is that shifts in play patterns are forcing toymakers to fight for shelf space in a tightening market. Boys in particular seem to be abandoning traditional toys at earlier ages in favor of consumer electronics, trendy video games, PC software and the Internet. The notion that kids are growing more sophisticated and tech-savvy (懂技术的), a trend called “age compression”, has bedeviled toy companies for at least a decade. Action figures, for instance, used to be considered healthy for boys up to age 12. Now the items are mainly marketed to boys 4 to 6. A recent study found that nearly half of the U.S children start on video games at 4 to 5 years old —and 20% at age 3 or younger.Toy companies, of course, have long seen this coming. Mattel attempted to get into educational software in the late 1990s, spending $3.6 million to buy the Learning Company. But it turned out to be a blunder and led to more than $400 million in losses. Later on Mattel got back to building basic brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels. But Bar bie’s sales slump may also be a victim of kids growing older at younger ages.Several of the toys expected to sell well this season are, in fact, those that incorporate video gaming and DVD technologies. Mattel’s Fisher-Price introduced a game system called InteracTV this year, featuring DVDs with characters like Dora the explorer. Hasbro came out with a portable color video player called VideoNow and has been putting classic games like Battleship and Yahtzee into hand-held electronic format.5. At the beginning of the passage, the author implies that[A] video games are designed only for boys.[B] girls are usually not interested in video games.[C] both Anthony and Michaely are good at playing PlayStation 2.[D] children would not like to stop playing Game Boy once they start.6. We learn from the passage that in this holiday season[A] it is hard to find traditional toys in the market.[B] toymakers are planning to design monster toys.[C] no hit toys will come onto the market.[D] Furby will become popular among children.7. The sales of construction sets are decreasing because[A] they are not healthy toys for children.[B] they are very weak and easily broken.[C] they are hard to find on shelves of toy stores.[D] they are aimed at boys who are easily attracted by the video games.8. What has been bothering toymakers for almost ten years?[A] The Internet addiction.[B] The trend of age compression.[C] The sales of action figures.[D] The new generation of Game Boy.9. It is predicted that in this season the popular toys would be[A] hot new game Halo 2 for the Xbox.[B] arts and crafts and dolls.[C] action figures designed for boys aged from 4 to 6.[D] toys that integrate video gaming with DVD technologies.Text CSpace is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors(流星) but also because of rays from the Sun and other stars.Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. Doses of radiation are measured in units called “rem”. We all receive radiation here on the Earth from the Sun, f rom cosmic rays and from radioactive minerals. The “normal” dose of radiation that we receive each year is about 100 millirem; it varies according to where you live, and this is a very rough estimate. Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than this without being damaged; the figure of 60 rem has been agreed on. The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about radiation damage — a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her sex organs may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of children or even grandchildren.Early space probes showed that radiation varies in different parts of space around the Earth. It also varies in time because, when great spurts of gas shoot out of the Sun, they are accompanied by a lot of extra radiation. Some estimates of the amount of radiation in space, based on various measurements and calculations, are as low as 10 rem per year, while others are as high as 5 remper hour! Mission to the Moon have had to cross the Van Allen belts of high radiation and, during the outward and return journeys, the Apollo 8 crew accumulated a total dose of about 200 millirem per man. It was hoped that there would not be any large solar flares during the times of Apollo moon walks because the walls of the lunar excursion modules (LEMs) were not thick enough to protect the men inside, though the command modules did give reasonable protection. So far, no dangerous doses of radiation have been reported, but the Gemini(双子座)orbits and the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space laboratory or in a base on the Moon. Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation, but no really effective ones have been found so far. At present, radiation seems to be the greatest physical hazard to space travelers, but it is impossible to say just how serious the hazard will turn out to be in the future.10. What make space a dangerous place?[A] The radioactive meteors.[B] The Sun and other stars.[C] Rays from the earth.[D] Rem.11. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?[A] The “normal” dose of radiation we rec eive is generally accepted as safe.[B] Scientists are certain that 60 rem of radiation won’t damage man.[C] Harm of radiation is not likely to be seen immediately.[D] We don’t know exactly the seriousness of radiation damage.12. Missions to the moon are dangerous to the explorers because[A] they have to cross the high radioactive area.[B] solar flares may damage the LEMs.[C] they have to stay in space for a long time.[D] they will probably run into meteors.13. How will men effectively protect themselves when they spend long periods in space?[A] By taking special drugs.[B] By wearing special suits.[C] By using a protective blanket.[D] No effective solution has been found yet.14. The example of Apollo is to show[A] the Apollo mission was very successful.[B] protection from space radiation is no easy job.[C] astronauts don’t care about radiation damage.[D] radiation is not a threat to well-protected space explorers.15. The best title for this passage would be[A] The Atmosphere and Our Environment[B] Research on Radiation[C] Effects of Space Radiation[D] Important Protection against RadiationText DA simple computer program that teaches children to distinguish between sounds can dramatically boost their listening skills. It can allow them to progress by the equivalent of two years in just a few weeks, the game’s creator claims. The game, called Phonomena, was devised by David Moore of the University of Oxford, U.K., as an aid for children with language problems, but he says his latest trials also show that it can help any child. Other experts, however, are reserving judgment until independent tests are carried out.Phonomena is designed to improve children’s ability to distinguish between differentphonemes(音素), the basic sounds that form the building blocks of language. Up to a fifth of all children are thought to have problems hearing the differences between some sounds, says Moore, who heads the U.K. Medical Research Council’s Institute of Hearing Research. In the game, children have to distinguish between pairs of phonemes such as the “i” sound from the word “bit” and the “e” from “bet”. They are played one phoneme followed by two more examples, and asked which one matches the first sound. As the game progresses, the phonemes are gradual ly “morphed”(改变) to make them more and more similar, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between them. With 44 phonemes in English, there are potentially more than 1,000 different pairs, but the game concentrates on just 22 pairs of the commonest and most similar-sounding phonemes. In the latest trials, 18 children aged between eight and ten played the game three times a week for four weeks. Their language abilities were compared before and after exposure to the game using a standard listening test. The team found a dramatic improvement in their language abilities, with listening ages up by an average 2.4 years compared with 12 children who did not play the game. In earlier trials on children with learning difficulties, the speech and language therapists who tested the game reported similar improvements. But Ted Wragg, an expert in education at the U.K’s University of Exeter, warns that such trials can produce misleading results. The improvements could be due to the efforts and attention of teachers and therapists, rather than the game itself. There is a history in education of people and companies making claims about learning products that do not stand up to scrutiny, he says.It is a bit like teaching someone to catch a ball, Moore adds. “Sensor y performance is no different from motor performance. As far as we know, the neural processes driving them both are the same.” And just as playing catch improves hand-eye coordination in other tasks, Moore thinks the phoneme training boosts children’s gene ral language skills. The advantage of using computers, he says, is each game can be tailored to a child’s abilities. An oxford-based company called MindWeavers has been set up to commercialize the game.Similar computer0based language tools already exist, such as those developed by Scientific Learning of Oakland, California. But these are geared exclusively towards children with speech and language problems and involve intensive training.“We don’t believe you need to do this Draconian(严酷的) amount of training for it to do good,” says Moore. He is also exploring the use of phoneme training as an aid to adults learning a foreign language.16. At first, the Phonomena game is designed for[A] adults.[B] disabled children.[C] children with language problems.[D] all children.17. We can infer from the passage that in the game[A] one fifth of the children have difficult distinguishing between sounds.[B] children are asked to tell the differences between similar sounds.[C] the phonemes are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish.[D] 44 phonemes in English are involved.18. In Ted Wrag g’s opinion,[A] the trial results are not reliable and reasonable.[B] the game is helpful to children with language problems.[C] the trial results are accurate.[D] the trial results show that the game is useless.19. What is the advantage of using computers in Phonomena game?[A] It can provide customized service.[B] It can provide multimedia service.[C] Children can play the game at home.[D] It can improve child’s ability.20. What’s the limitation of the existing computer-based language tools?[A] They are designed exclusively for children.[B] They require too much training.[C] They are too harsh.[D] They do nothing good to language skills.语境词汇Text A1. crackle sparks of electricity <喻>通过电波传递2. anticlimax n. Text A1. As the sun began to set, the golden hues of the evening cast a warm glow over the bustling city. The aroma of various cuisines wafted through the air, tempting the senses of the passersby. Amidst the hustle and bustle, a group of friends found themselves in the heart of the city, contemplating their dinner options.Hey, does anyone know if theres any takeout around here? asked John, his stomach growling audibly.Im not sure, but Ive heard about this new app that helps you find nearby restaurants and their takeout options, replied Sarah, pulling out her smartphone. The group huddled around Sarahs phone as she opened the app and typed in their current location. Instantly, a list of nearby eateries appeared on the screen, each with a brief description and a menu.Theres a sushi place just a block away, said Tom, pointing at one of the options. And look, they have a takeout menu with a variety of rolls and sashimi.Ooh, I could go for some sushi, agreed Emily. But what about those of us who arent into raw fish?Dont worry, theres also a burger joint down the street, Sarah said, scrolling through the list. They offer takeout and have a wide selection of burgers, fries, and milkshakes.Perfect! exclaimed John. We can split up and get something from each place. That way, we can try a little bit of everything. The friends agreed on the plan and split into two groups. John, Emily, and Tom headed to the sushi place, while Sarah and the others went to the burger joint. As they walked, they chatted about their favorite dishes and debated the merits of various takeout options. Upon reaching the sushi restaurant, John and his friends were greeted by the sight of beautifully presented dishes in the window. They placed their order for a selection of rolls and sashimi, along with some miso soup and edamame as appetizers. At the burger joint, Sarah and her group were welcomed by the enticing smell of grilled meat and the sight of golden, crispy fries. They ordered a mix of classic and gourmet burgers, along with a generous serving of fries and a couple of milkshakes to share. As the friends regrouped with their takeout bags in hand, they found a cozy spot in anearby park to enjoy their meal. The sun had fully set by now, and the city lights twinkled like stars in the night sky. They laid out a blanket and began to unpack their food, creating a feast of sushi, burgers, and fries. The friends laughed and chatted as they shared their meals, each person trying a bit of everything. This is the best takeout Ive ever had, said Emily, savoring a bite of a perfectly cooked sushi roll.I have to agree, added Tom. Its not just the food, but the company and the atmosphere that make it special. As they finished their meal and packed up their leftovers, the friends reflected on the evening. The convenience of finding takeout options through an app, the delicious food, and the camaraderie they shared made for a memorable night out in the city.Lets do this again sometime, suggested Sarah, as they walked back to their cars. There are so many more takeout places to explore and try.The friends agreed, already looking forward to their next culinary adventure in the city that never sleeps. And as they went their separate ways, the warm glow of the city lights seemed to echo the warmth of their shared experience.。

沉浸在骑鹅旅行记英语作文英文回答:Embarking on a Quixotic Odyssey: A Journey Astride Quills and Parchment. In the hallowed halls of literature, where flights of fancy take wing, there exists a tale that transcends the boundaries of time and imagination. It is the story of a knight-errant, Don Quixote, whose delusions of grandeur propelled him on a whimsical adventure astride his loyal steed, Rocinante. But what if, instead of a noble charger, Don Quixote had embarked on his quixotic quest perched upon a humble goose? This outlandish notion forms the comedic and poignant core of "The Goose Travels South," an unpublished masterpiece that weaves together the threads of adventure, absurdity, and a profound meditation on the nature of existence. The novel's protagonist, a modern-day DonQuixote named Ignatius McCracken, sets off on a journey across Europe, accompanied not by a burly squire, but by an unlikely companion: a garrulous and opinionated goose named Henrietta.Through their misadventures, Ignatius and Henrietta encounter a kaleidoscope of unforgettable characters and situations. There's a beautiful damsel in distress, a pompous literary critic, a wise-cracking witch, and a host of eccentric individuals who add depth and humor to their extraordinary voyage. As Ignatius and Henrietta negotiate the trials and tribulations of their goose-propelled odyssey, they embark on a parallel journey of self-discovery. Ignatius grapples with the complex nature of human existence, grappling with questions of identity, meaning, and the elusive nature of happiness. Henrietta, with her unconventional wisdom and unyielding loyalty, provides a unique and often irreverent perspective on life's absurdities and complexities. In an unexpected twist, Ignatius's feathered companionbecomes more than just a mere means of transportation. Henrietta transforms into a symbol of resilience, adaptability, and the boundless possibilities that lie hidden within the most unassuming of creatures. As the novel reaches its poignant climax, Ignatius and Henrietta find themselves at a crossroads, facing a choice that will forever alter the course of their lives."The Goose Travels South" is a literary tour de force that seamlessly blends comedy, adventure, and philosophical introspection. Thus, it is a great opportunity to study foreign languages and make friends with people of different and similar personalities. On the basic ,though they have the same choice, but the reasons for presenting different answers thoroughly .Some people think this action is good for their healthy growth . However, on the contrary, there have been some harmful opinions to this thinking. With rapid development of chinese economy , education in China have the chance to beat studying aboard. And it is a behavior that proves we love our own country and so on .As far as I am concorned ,I prefer to keep balance between studying in our own country and studying abroad. We can combine eastern and weatern eduation to take the essence and discard the dregs. (取其精华,去其糟粕)Nowadays , the stress of working develops harder and harder ,it is a usual condition that students choose to study under a work-study program. As for me , studying abroad has more advantages than disadvantages. His lifelong dedication to developing high-yielding hybrid rice varieties has helped feed billions and alleviate poverty and hunger around the world. If I could have lunch with this remarkable man, I would be utterly starstruck yet brimming with questions I've longed to ask him.I'd begin by expressing my sincere admiration for his pioneering work in cultivating the first hybrid rice strain in the 1970s. Prior to this groundbreaking achievement, rice yields had remained relatively stagnant for centuries. Yuan's research into utilizing hybrid vigor - the increased productivity that occurs from crossbreeding two different parental lines - shattered long-standing barriers and ushered in a new era of agricultural advancement. What drove his innovative thinking? How did he maintain his resolve in the face of skepticism from his peers?I imagine Yuan would recount the years of painstaking cross-pollination trials required to develop that first successful hybrid combination. The careful selection, emasculation of male parents, wind pollination techniques - I've read about the laborious processes in textbooks, but hearing the personal struggles from the man himself would be incredibly insightful.I'm curious what sustained his motivation during the long periods of failed experiments. Did he ever contemplate abandoning the pursuit? What wisdom would he impart about persevering in the face of obstacles?Beyond his seminal hybrid rice breakthrough, I'm equally awed by Yuan's lifelong commitment to iterating on his work and developing increasingly hardy, high-yield varieties suited for different climates and conditions. Each new hybrid pushed the boundaries further, enabling more productive harvests with fewer inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. I'd love to learn about his approach to identifying promising parental lines to hybridize, the innovative techniques he utilized, and the creative mindset required for such continuous innovation over decades.Yuan's impact figures are simply astounding. His pioneering hybrids have produced an estimated 800 million tons more rice, enough to feed 300-400 million people annually. Staggering numbers like these are impossible to fully comprehend on an individual level. If I could sit with Yuan over lunch, I'd ask him how he personally conceptualizes the sheer magnitude of human lives他positively affected. Does he perceive it as one cohesive legacy, or does he find more meaning in the anecdotal accounts of specific farmers and families lifted from poverty? Iwonder how his work's colossal scale has shaped his perspective and sense of purpose. While discussing his professional achievements would certainly dominate our conversation, I'm equally intrigued to understand the man behind the accolades. What was his childhood like? How did growing up during the tumultuous years of the Chinese Civil War and the famine of the Great Leap Forward shape his worldview and motivations? I've read he became enamored with biology after a chance encounter with a book as a teenage refugee. That seemingly mundane moment charted the course for his life's work benefiting humanity. Such twists of fate fascinate me - I would ask Yuan to reflect on that pivotal event and the importance of maintaining open eyes and an open mind.Yuan has described his career as his "life's romance" - his enduring passion that transcended personal ambition. This deep sense of calling resonates powerfully with me as I contemplate my own future path. What advice would he share about pursuing one's life's work with wholehearted commitment? How did he continually rediscover motivation after each accomplishment? In an era where young people are increasingly restless and flitbetween pursuits, I'm captivated by Yuan's ability to channel lifelong devotion to a singular, socially impactful mission. At 92 years old, Yuan Longping continues tirelessly refining his work. Having officially "re-retired" several times already, he remains driven to solve new agricultural challenges facing humanity, like developing drought-resistant and saline-tolerant rice varieties. I'm humbled by his relentless industry and would seek his insights on sustaining such fervent dedication over an entire working lifetime. How does he cultivate reverence for his field while avoiding hubris over past successes?Throughout our conversation, I have no doubt Yuan's humility and humanitarian spirit would shine through. He has frequently downplayed the "Father of Hybrid Rice" moniker, insisting his work belongs to the people. This humbleness despite his legendary stature is immensely admirable to me, especially in a society where arrogance often accompanies achievement. If we discussed values, I would ask how he has guarded against pride and self-aggrandizement while achieving heights few humans ever attain. His ability to retain grounded perspective seems to have been intrinsically tied to his unwavering focus on uplifting humanity rather thanself-glorification.Finally, having satiated my endless questions, I would conclude our hypothetical lunch by thanking Yuan for his selfless life's work and for taking the time to share his experiences with me. His path serves as a profound inspiration for how I hope to live with purpose, integrity and steadfast commitment to service. While I can only dream of having a fraction of Yuan Longping's colossal impact, his spirit infuses me with determination to identify my own calling and pour myself fully into the betterment of our world.Undoubtedly, the opportunity to share a humble meal with one of humanity's pre-eminent agricultural pioneers would be the honor of a lifetime. His pioneering science catalyzed shifts that enhanced global food security and economic prosperity. Yet Yuan seems to have retained a beautiful simplicity, always grounding his work's significance in the uplifted lives of everyday people. This seamless dovetailing of groundbreaking achievement and enlightened compassion encapsulates a supreme model of human endeavor that I can only aspire to emulate. Having lunch with Yuan Longping would provide unparalleled wisdom for my own journey of striving to lead a life of both brilliant innovation and inspirational character.篇3If I Had Lunch With Yuan LongpingThe name Yuan Longping may not ring a bell for many of my peers, but for me, he is an icon, a real-life hero whose groundbreaking work has quite literally allowed billions to eat. If I had the incredible opportunity to share a meal with the "Father of Hybrid Rice," my mind would be brimming with questions to ask this living legend.First, I would inquire about his early life and what first sparked his passion for agriculture and plant research. Born in 1930 in Beijing, did he have any inkling as a youth that he would one day revolutionize global food production? Or was it more a gradual realization of his calling as he pursued his studies? I can't even fathom the determination and grit it must have taken to doggedly toil away at hybrid rice breeding for years on end before achieving his historic breakthrough.I would ask Mr. Yuan to vividly recount that seminal moment in 1973 when his pioneering labor finally paid off with the first commercially viable hybrid rice strain. After a lifetime's worth of perseverance, often spent laboring from before dawn until well past dusk, what went through his mind? Did he immediately grasp the profound impact his innovation would have? Or was the significance of that achievement not fully clear at first?Evolving hybrid strains led to far superior rice crop yields compared to conventional inbred varieties. I'm sure many at the time doubted whether such a paradigm shift in agriculture was truly feasible. So I'm incredibly curious what specific challenges and naysayers Mr. Yuan had to overcome in those early years before hybrid rice cultivation spread like wildfire across China and then the world.Yuan Longping's unwavering commitment to enhancing global food security has been awe-inspiring. According to the World Food Prize Foundation, his life's work helped alleviate hunger for hundreds of millions and was pivotal in preventing mass starvation in densely populated regions. If I do get to meet him, I would express my profound gratitude and admiration for the way he utilized science to directly improve humanity'swell-being on a staggering scale.Beyond just hybrid rice, I'm very intrigued by Yuan's overarching philosophy on the moral imperative to feed an ever-growing global population in an environmentally sustainable manner. In interviews, he has described traditional crop breeding techniques as being too slow and inefficient given the urgent need to boost yields. At the same time, he strongly advocated for hybrid breeding over genetic modification out ofsafety concerns. I'm keen to better understand his nuanced perspective on striking that balance between rapidly ramping up food production and minimizing ecological harm.On a personal level, I would love to gain insight into what continues motivating Yuan at 93 years young to continually enhance and iterate on his hybrid crop research. He has often been quoted as saying his work is far from finished, out of a sense that hunger remains an immense global issue requiring constant innovation. With a mind as brilliant as his, he could have likely taken it easy long ago and earned immense profits by commercializing his previous breakthroughs. Yet he stays hungry, passionate, andRestlessly pioneering for the greater good. As a young student, I find that drive and moral conviction hugely aspirational.I feel immensely fortunate to be coming of age in a world firmly benefitting from Yuan Longping's stunning life achievements. Even as hybrid crops continue enhancing lives across the developing world, he dedicated his twilight years to an even more ambitious quest - developing strains ofsalt-tolerant hybrid rice that can be grown in coastal areas affected by soil salinity. The potential for this salt-resistant rice to boost food security in nations plagued by soil degradation isabsolutely game-changing. I would be eager to hear Mr. Yuan's vermion of this journey, the latest milestones his team has reached, and where he sees this critical work heading next. The very notion of sciencing hybrid rice was at first deemed preposterous and impossible by many experts. Yet through bloody stubbornness and creative genius, Yuan defied the odds and altered the course of human civilization. His is an unrelenting can-do spirit that sees opportunities for progress where others only find dead ends. If I'm blessed with the opportunity to meet Yuan Longping, I hope to soak up as much of that audacious innovator's mindset as I possibly can.Imagine being able to directly pick the brain of someone who helped uplift billions out of hunger and malnutrition. Imagine learning firsthand from the man who upended centuries of received wisdom in agronomy. Imagine soaking in the luminous wisdom and moral clarity of someone widely regarded as one of the greatest humanitarians of the modern age. I would be absolutely awestruck to experience that, and would no doubt walk away endlessly inspired to chart an impactful life path of my own, however I can leave the world that much better than I found it.。

It wasn‟t a scintillating game, but as always the 70,000-strong crowd was rooting for Hagi, wildly applauding when the 36-year-old set up a goal as he‟s done countless times before for Romania. At a pre-game news conference, the wiry, dark-haired Hagi was subdued. He expressed one regret –that he had been unable to take his team to the semifinals in the 1994 World Cup. Romania lost to Sweden on penalties in the quarterfinals.Questions:(31)F or what country or team had Gheorghe been playing football?(32)W hat was he going to do?(33)W hat was his regret?Passage 4:It is always assumed that translators are at least bilingual, but this is really not enough. To be fully competent translator, one also needs to be bicultural in order to …read between the lines‟. A translator must be able to sense what is purposely left implicit in the source text and what can and should be made implicit in the translated text. In fact, too many translations are needlessly long, since translators believe that they must explicitly represent every word or innuendo in the text.A second or third language is something which can be learned, although in the process of mastering a language it is usually necessary to murder it from time to time. But biculturalism is something which must be absorbed and experienced in a living situation. There are, however, some competent translators who have never had the privilege of living in the country in which the source or target language is spoken, and accordingly, they have had to depend upon voluminous reading, but such persons are certainly the exception. Those translators who specialize in documents from ancient languages have a double liability in that the number and types of such documents are often quite limited and there is no opportunity to consult an informant. In addition to an excellent command of both source and target languages translators usually specialize in one or more areas of knowledge in which their competence is needed and the pay is better, e.g. aeronautics, chemistry, artificial intelligence, mechanics, accounting, international law, medicine, or agronomy. But some more common fields my also require considerable specialization of knowledge, e.g. manuals for television repairs, exotic cooking recipes, and building codes. In general it is possible to classify the various grades of specialization in knowledge in terms of the assumed educational levels: (1) that which one can assumemost high school graduates should know, e.g. business letters and bills of lading, (2) that which most university graduates should know, and (3) that which specialists in a particular field have learned. But formal education is not always an adequate gauge of knowledge, especially in a time in which there is a worldwide decline in educational standards.Bilingualism, biculturalism, and adequate knowledge of the content of a text are insufficient without the ability to write effectively. To some extent the skills required in writing can be taught, but persons need to have special aptitudes for clear and pleasing verbal expression. If translators intend to specialize in such literary genres as lyric poetry, novels, drama, and popular essays, they should have personal competence in these types of discourse.Questions:(34)W hat does the author mean by …bicultural‟ competence?(35)I s it important, according to the author, for translators to go to a foreign countrywhere the source or target language is spoken and absorb and experience that culture in question as well as the language?(36)W hat other competence than language and culture competence, according to theauthor, is necessary for translation of, say, a mechanics material?(37)W hich of the listed items best represents the author‟s main idea for the 4thparagraph?a)There is a worldwide decline in educational standards.b)Most people that have received a college education should know how to writebusiness letters and bills of lading.c)There are 3 types of special or specialized knowledge needed for good translation.d)In addition to formal education, people need informal education for specializationof knowledge.(38)W hich of these can serve as the title of the last paragraph, if needed?(a)The Importance of Writing(b)The Importance of Specialized Knowledge(c)The Importance of Bilingualism(d)The Importance of Bilingualism and BiculturalismPassage 5: Advice to studentsA)How to Avoid PlagiarismWhy is Plagiarism so serious? Plagiarism is defined as …the taking and passing off the thoughts, writings, etc, of other people as your own‟. In short, it is intellectual theft. In not crediting the source, a person is guilty of stealing another‟s research, thinking, writing, or images (intellectual knowledge in all its forms). It is unacceptable at all times; it is completely unacceptable in an intellectual environment such as a university. We take a very dim view of students who engage in plagiarism. If a student is found to have deliberately plagiarised the work of another –including copying the work of other students –the penalties are severe. The …best outcome‟will be a zero for the particular assessment exercise. Y ou may be failed outright for that subject. If there is reason to believe that you have made a practice ofplagiarism, university disciplinary action may be recommended which could result in your expulsion from the university and denial of your degree. Sometimes a student might inadvertently plagiarise. This is usually the result of inexperience, sloppy note taking, or a combination of both. With the advent of the Internet and a wide range of other electronic sources, the rules for correct citation are still being written works. The following notes are to help you avert being suspected of or accused of plagiarising the work of another person. They include special notes on citation of sources found on the World Wide Web.B)Basic RulesY ou must cite the source of information in the body of any essay or assignment (either as a numbered footnote or as an in-text reference) and list the cited source in the bibliography ordered alphabetically. To do this properly, you need to be careful about recording the source of each note that you make, whatever the source, be it a book, a journal, a film or TV documentary, or a source on the Internet. Each note you take should include certain basic information which enables another person to identify correctly and locate that source and the origin of your quote or data cited. The method varies for different types of sources. In the first reference to any tape of item you must give a description sufficient to identify it. This requires: For books:Author (full name), Title of book (underlined or in italics), the edition (if not the first), Place and Date of the publication, and Page Number. For articles: Author (full name), Title of article (between …quotation marks‟), Name of journal (underlined or in italics), V olume and Issue number, Date/Y ear of publication, Page Number. For World Wide Web sources:name of organisation providing the service, the title of the home page and its http://-address (this is the most important reference), the date of creation of that page (if known) or the date of your access (since pages can change or disappear). Because the WWW is hyperlink media, pages containing …hotlinks‟ which allow you to go elsewhere, it is important that you note the actual location (URL) of the page from which you have obtained your information. Y ou do that by looking at the Location: field which shows the http://-address. (Some sites allow you to visit other sites within one of their frames without changing the root address. Y ou need to note this.) Here are some examples of acceptable citations: …China‟s Accession to the WTO‟, by Frederick M. Abbott, January 1998, American Society of International Law, /insigh13.htm, Accessed 15 March 1999. …China‟s Track Record and the Global Economy‟, by Margaret M. Pearson (The CBR, January-February 2000), US-China Business Council, /public/wto/uscbc/pearson.html, Accessed 21 April 2000.If you take notes using your word processor running simultaneously with your WWW browser, using a process of copy and paste, make sure you put quotation marks around passages which are a direct copy of the Web document to distinguish the copied passages from notes which are in your own words.C)ChecklistTo be certain to acknowledge sources fairly and avoid plagiarising, review this checklist before beginning to write your essay and again after you have completedyour first draft. What type of source are you using: your own independent material, common knowledge, or someone else‟s independent material? If you are quoting someone else‟s material, is the quotation exact? Have you used quotation marks for quotations run into the text? Have you set off block quotes with an extra space before and after the quote, single spacing within the quote, and left indenting of all lines of the block quote? Are omissions shown with ellipses and additions with square brackets? If you are paraphrasing someone else‟s material, have you rewritten it in your own words and sentence structures? Does your paraphrase employ quotation marks when you resort to the author‟s exact language? Have you represented the author‟s meaning without distortion? Have you acknowledged each use of someone else‟s material? Do all references contain complete and accurate information on the sources you have cited?D)Knowing What to AcknowledgeGeneral Principles: In all written work submitted for assessment you must sho w the sources for your material. The principle is that whenever submitted material is not your own original work this must be acknowledged. To present material without acknowledgment is in effect to claim that it represents your own work and ideas. Quoted passages should be placed in quotation marks and their source referenced within the text (giving author, date and page number). A list of reference at the end of the paper lists all the works referred to. Presenting material from other sources without full acknowledgment (plagiarism) is penalized heavily. This holds for both copying and paraphrasing of other‟s work. We expect that when a student turns in work for assessment that it is the independent work of that student, it is written by that student, and they have written it in their own words. In most cases, copied assignments will be given a zero grade for the piece of work for both parties: if A copies B‟s assignment, both A and B will get zero. Assignments copied in whole or large part from books or articles will receive a zero grade. The same essay may not be submitted for assessment in two different subjects.E)Avoiding PlagiarismThe word plagiarism comes from a Latin word for …kidnapper‟. Plagiarism means you are kidnapping or stealing someone else‟s ideas or words and presenting them as if they were your own. If you copy an article from an encyclopedia and make some minor changes to pass it off as your own writing, you are plagiarising deliberately. If you carelessly forget to include quotation marks or a reference to show whose words or ideas you are using, you are plagiarising accidentally. Whether deliberate or accidental, plagiarism is a serious offence in scholarship. It is not plagiarism, however, to use other writer‟s material when you acknowledge whose material it is. That procedure is a part of honest research writing. Avoid plagiarism by acknowledging sources when necessary and by using them accurately and fairly.F)Knowing What to Acknowledge:When you write a research essay, you use information from three kinds of sources:(1) your independent thoughts and experiences; (2) common knowledge, the basic information people share; and (3) other people‟s independent thoughts and experiences. Of the three, you must acknowledge only the third, the work of others. G)Y our Independent Material:Y ou need not acknowledge your own independent material –your thoughts, compilations of facts, or experimental results, expressed in your own words or format. However, someone else‟s ideas and facts are not yours: even when they, are expressed entirely in your words and format, they require acknowledgment.H)Common KnowledgeCommon knowledge consists of the standard information of a field of study as well as folk literature and commonsense observations. Standard information includes, for instance, the major facts of history. The dates of Charlemagne‟s rule as emperor of Rome (800-814) and the fact that his reign was accompanied by a revival of learning –both facts available in many reference books –do not need to be acknowledged, even if you have to look up the information. Folk literature, which is popularly known and cannot be traced to particular writers, is considered common knowledge. This would include nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and any stories from the oral tradition of literature. Even if you read these things in printed form, documentation is not needed.A commonsense observation, such as the idea that weather affects people‟s spirits does not require acknowledgment. But a scientist‟s findings about the effects of high humidity on people with blood pressure, will require acknowledgment. Y ou may not know, for example, the dates of the French Revolution or the standard definition of photosynthesis, although these are considered common knowledge. If you look them up in a dictionary or reference book, you do not need to acknowledge the source.I)Someone Else’s Independent Material:Facts or ideas from signed or copyrighted sources require acknowledgment. The source may be a book, letter, magazine, newspaper, film, speech, interview, television program, or microfilmed document, but you must acknowledge not only the ideas or facts themselves but also the language and format in which they are presented. If you use a table or diagram created by another writer, acknowledge it just as you would their ideas.J)Quoting, Summarising and ParaphrasingWhen writing a research essay, you can present the ideas of others either through direct quotation or summary or paraphrase, depending on your purpose. For direct quotation, copy the material from the source carefully. Use quotation marks for even a single word if the original author used it in a special or central way. Do not change any wording, spelling, capitalization or punctuation. Use an ellipsis mark (three spaced full stops) to indicate the exact point at which you have deliberately left out part of a direct quotation. Use brackets to surround any word, comment, or punctuation mark you add within the quotation. Place the word sic (meaning …in thismanner‟) in square brackets immediately after any mistake in spelling, grammar, or common knowledge that your reader might otherwise believe to be a misquote. If the quoted material is eight lines or less, place it in quotation marks within your running text. If it is longer than eight lines set it off from the text without quotation marks. Quotations of the latter sort should have an extra line space before and after the quote and all lines should be single spaced and indented from the left. When you summarise or paraphrase, you state in your own words and sentence structures the meaning of someone else‟s writing. Since the words and the sentence structures are yours, you do not use quotation marks, though, of course, you must acknowledge the author of the idea. If you use the original sentence pattern and substitute synonyms for key words or use the original words and change the sentence pattern, you are not paraphrasing but plagiarizing, even if the source is acknowledged because both methods use someone else‟s expression without quotation marks. In paraphrasing it is crucial not only to use your own form of expression but also to represent the author‟s meaning without distorting it.Tell whether these statements are True or False according to the text. Write True or False only.(39)T o plagiarize a classmate‟s work is not as serious as plagiarizing a published bookor article.(40)T he worst outcome for school plagiarism is expulsion from the school.(41)A ll plagiarizers plagiarize intentionally.(42)T he right citation relies on careful note-taking which is supposed to includeinformation about the author, place, time, page number.(43)W hen you quote someone‟s material, you do not have to think whether it is exact.(44)W hen you add something to your quotation, you need square brackets.(45)W hen you are paraphrasing someone‟material, all you do is use your own wordsand sentence structures, and you can copy some of the author‟s exact language, with quotation marks.(46)T o present material without acknowledgment means to claim that it is youroriginal work.(47)P araphrasing of other s‟ work is not penalized.(48)I f John copies Betty‟s assignment, both students will get zero.(49)P lagiarism means you are kidnapping or stealing someone else‟s ideas or wordsand presenting them as if they were your own.(50)I t is not plagiarism to use other writers‟material when you acknowledge whosematerial it is.(51)W hen you write an essay, you use information from two kinds of sources.(52)S tandard information of a field of study as well as folk literature andcommonsense observations all belong to the category of common knowledge. (53)N ursery rhymes, fairy tales, and stories from the oral tradition of literature mustalso be documented when you use them in an essay.(54)W hen you forget and then find the dates, say, of the French Revolution or thestandard definition of photosynthesis in a dictionary or reference book, you need。

Like a mathematical equation or geometric formula, the instrumental music of the early modern era carried no explicit narrative content—it was neither a vehicle of religious expression nor a means of supporting a secular(nonreligious)vocalized text.Such music was written without consideration for the associational content traditionally provided by a set of sung lyrics. The idea of music as an aesthetic exercise, composed for its own sake rather than to serve a religious or communalpurpose, was a notable feature of the seventeenth century and one that has distinguished modern Western European music from the musical traditions of Asia and Africa.②Not surprisingly, the rise of instrumental music was accompanied by improvements in instruments and refinements in tuning.Indeed, instrumental music came to dominate musical composition at the very moment that Western musicians were perfecting such stringed instruments as the violin, viola, and cello and such keyboard instruments as the organ and harpsichord.By the early eighteenth century, musicians were adopting the system of tuning known as equal temperament, whereby the octave was divided into twelve half-steps of equal size. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier(1722)was an attempt to popularize this system to a skeptical musical public. The new attention paid to improving instruments and systematizing tuning mirrored the efforts of scientists and philosophers to bring precision and uniformity to the tools and methods for scientific inquiry.③In the seventeenth century, northern Italy was the world center for the manufacture of violins. The Amati,Guarneri, and Stradivari families of Cremona, Italy, established the techniques of making high-quality violins that were sought in all of the great courts of Europe.Transmitted from father to son,the construction techniques used to produce these instruments were guarded so secretly that modern violinmakers have never successfully imitated them.Elsewhere, around 1650,earlier instruments were standardized and refined. Also during this period amateur music making was widespread, and professional performance also took a great leap forward,as a new breed of virtuosi inspired the writing of treatises on performance techniques.④Three main types of composition—the sonata, the suite, and the concerto—dominated seventeenth-century instrumental music. All three reflect the baroque style of European architecture, art, and music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries taste for dramatic contrasts in tempo and texture. The sonata(from the Italian word for“sounded”,that is,music played and not sung)is a piece written for a few instruments—often no more than one or two.It usually consisted of three movements major sections in long instrumental compositions of contrasting tempo—fast/slow/fast—each based on a song or dance form of the time. The suite, written for any combination of instruments,is a sequence or series of movements derived from various European court or folk dances—for example, thesarabande, the pavane, the minuet, and gigue,or jig.Henry Purcell(1659–1695) in England,Francois Couperin(1668–1733)in France, and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)in Germany all contributed to the development of the suite as a musical genre. Finally, the concerto(from the same root as concertato, which describes opposing or contrasting bodies of sound)is a composition consisting of two groups of instruments, one small and the other large, playing in dialogue. The typical baroque concerto, the concerto grosso(“large concerto”)featured several movements whose number and kind varied considerably.⑤The leading Italian instrumental composer of the baroque era was Antonio Vivaldi(1678–1741).Vivaldi wrote some450concertos.He systematized the concerto grosso into a three-movement form(fast/slow/fast)and increased the distinctions between solo and ensemble groups in each movement.Of the many exciting compositions Vivaldi wrote for solo violin and ensemble, the most glorious is The Four Seasons,a group of four violin concertos, each of which musically describes a single season.译文器乐的发展①直到16世纪,几乎所有的音乐都是为声音而作的,而不是为了乐器。

When I think of the most revered figures in the realm of science, one name invariably comes to mind: Stephen Hawking. His life and work have been a profound source of inspiration for me, not just as a student of science, but as a human being striving to understand the universe and our place within it.Growing up, I was always fascinated by the cosmos. The stars, the galaxies, the black holes they all seemed like distant, enigmatic entities, beckoning to be understood. It was Stephen Hawking who brought these celestial bodies closer to me, demystifying the universe with his groundbreaking theories and discoveries.Hawkings journey was nothing short of extraordinary. Diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ALS at the age of 21, he was given only a few years to live. Yet, he defied all odds and continued to contribute to the field of cosmology for over five decades. His resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. One of Hawkings most significant contributions was his work on black holes. He proposed that black holes emit radiation, now known as Hawking radiation, which challenged the prevailing notion that nothing could escape a black hole. This idea revolutionized our understanding of the universe and paved the way for further exploration into the mysteries of space.Hawkings book, A Brief History of Time, was my gateway into the world of cosmology. It was the first book that made me realize the complexity andbeauty of the universe. His ability to explain complex scientific concepts in a manner that was accessible to the layperson was truly remarkable. The book sparked my curiosity and led me to delve deeper into the subject. Moreover, Hawkings work on the Big Bang theory and the nature of time has had a profound impact on my understanding of the universe. His assertion that time has a beginning and an end, and that it is not an independent entity but rather a dimension intertwined with space, has always intrigued me. It has made me question the very nature of existence and the fabric of reality.Hawkings life was not just about scientific achievements, but also about his unwavering spirit and determination. Despite being confined to a wheelchair and communicating through a computergenerated voice, he continued to inspire millions around the world. His presence at various scientific conferences, his appearances on television shows, and his active engagement on social media platforms demonstrated his zest for life and his commitment to sharing knowledge.Furthermore, Hawkings legacy extends beyond his scientific contributions. He was a staunch advocate for the responsible use of artificial intelligence and a vocal critic of the potential dangers of unchecked technological advancements. His warnings about the need for humanity to be cautious in its pursuit of technological progress have resonated with me and have shaped my perspective on the ethical implications of scientific advancements. In conclusion, Stephen Hawking is the epitome of intellectual curiosity, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge. His life and work have had a profound impact on my understanding of the universe and have inspired me to question, explore, and appreciate the wonders of the cosmos. As I continue my journey in the field of science, I am constantly reminded of the indomitable spirit of Hawking and the importance of pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.。

It's a reallylong book with over 800,000 words and 120 chapters, but it tells an amazing story that kept me completely hooked from start to finish. The book is set in the turbulent years towards the end of the Han dynasty in ancient China, from around 169 AD to 280 AD. It describes the military struggles and epic battles between the states of Shu Han, Wei, and Eastern Wu as they fought for control after the Han empire collapsed. Even though it's a really old story that happened over 1,800 years ago, the book is full of drama, heroism, treachery, and tragedy that still feels really exciting and relevant today. There are so many incredible characters that stood out to me as I was reading. Obviously the biggest hero is the brave warrior Liu Bei and his sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. Liu Bei is portrayed as a modest, benevolent leader who inspires unwavering loyalty in his followers as he battles to restore the Han dynasty and bring peace to the land. His oath of brotherhood with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei is one of the most iconic moments in the entire book.On the opposing side, the clever strategist Cao Cao is depicted as an ambitious and ruthless villain, but also a cunning military genius. Even though he's the antagonist, at times Icouldn't help but be in awe of his resourcefulness and how he was able to outmaneuver his enemies through brilliant tactics. His most famous advisor was Zhuge Liang, the Sleeping Dragon, who used his wit and intelligence to repeatedly confound Cao Cao's forces.Another character who made a big impression on me was Diao Chan, whose beauty was so incredible that it sparked a bloody conflict between two warriors who were best friends. The chapters describing her performing the romantic dance "The Smell of Green Plums" and inadvertently causing Lü Bu to turn against his sworn brother were some of the most dramatic and emotional parts of the entire epic.Of course, a big part of what makes the story so compelling is all the battles, combat strategies, and heroic martial arts action. My favorite had to be the epic Battle of Red Cliffs, where the allied forces of Liu Bei and Sun Quan were outnumbered but were able to defeat Cao Cao's mighty navy through the clever use of a "burning wind" strategy conceived by Zhuge Liang and Pang Tong. The vivid descriptions of the flames engulfing Cao Cao's ships and the chaos that ensued really jumped off the page.Beyond all the military conquests and clashing of swords, what really resonated with me were the profound themes about honor, loyalty, integrity, and standing up for what's right even in the face of daunting odds. The bonds of brotherhood between Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, and their steadfast commitment to their cause despite constant setbacks and hardship, were really inspiring. I also loved how the book showed the importance of having wise and able advisors like Zhuge Liang.Overall, I can see why the Romance of the Three Kingdoms has been so beloved and influential for so many centuries. Even today, it remains an epic tale that perfectly blends enthralling storytelling with deeper philosophical insights about human nature, conflict, and striving to achieve a higher moral vision for society. Reading it gave me a newfound appreciation for classic Chinese literature and culture. While the battles and drama were thrilling, what will really stick with me are the timeless lessons about courage, sacrifice, and doing the right thing that echoed throughout the heroes' journeys.篇2My Thoughts on Reading the Romance of the Three KingdomsOne of my favorite books that I read this year was the classic Chinese novel called the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It tells the story of the epic wars and battles at the end of the Han Dynasty in ancient China from around 169-280 AD. Even though it's a really old book, I found the stories and characters to be super exciting and interesting! The novel follows the adventures and struggles of powerful lords, generals, and warriors as they fight for control over the land after the Han empire started to weaken and collapse. It was written a long time ago by Luo Guanzhong in the 14th century, but is based on even older tales and historical records from that chaotic era.I really enjoyed reading about the three sworn brothers - Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. They seemed like the closest of friends who stuck together no matter what happened. Liu Bei is portrayed as a wise and benevolent leader who wants to restore peace and prosperity to the people. His buddies Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are these totally fierce warrior dudes who are unstoppable forces on the battlefield. I loved reading the parts describing their amazing martial arts skills and the epic clashes with their rivals.Speaking of rivals, the book has some of the most memorable villains and bad guys I've ever read about. There's Cao Cao who is incredibly cunning and always outmaneuvering his opponents through clever tricks and strategy. He's always saying these profound philosophical quotes that made me stop and think. Then you have monsters like Lu Bu who is described as a virtually unbeatable fighter - he shoots arrows with incredible accuracy and wields his fierce meteor hammer to smash through enemy lines. The battles and wars in the book are just mind-blowing with hundreds of thousands of soldiers clashing together on these massive scales. But the author also does a great job zooming in on the personal stories and relationships between the characters. You really feel invested in who is prospering or suffering setbacks as the tides of war keep shifting back and forth across the vast landscapes of ancient China.I have to admit, some parts were pretty confusing to follow with all the different kingdoms, armies, generals and their complex strategies outmaneuvering each other. And there's a ton of character names to remember which was tricky. But overall, I was just hooked on seeing what would happen next aseach chapter unfolded with cool plot twists or the underdogs gaining advantages through their courage and wits.My favorite part was probably the Battle of Red Cliffs which was this iconic series of clashes between the brilliant strategist Zhuge Liang and his fire attack ships against Cao Cao's mighty naval forces. It's just an amazingly visual scene imagining those flaming barges and bolts smashing into the enemy's ships and throwing everything into chaos. The strategies and tactics used were so smart and the battle just felt completely epic in scale. After reading the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I have a much better appreciation for Chinese history and literature. The stories of brotherhood, violence, honor and betrayal still feel so relevant even though they're from so long ago. I can definitely see why this book has been so influential and renowned as one of the greatest novels of all time from China's rich culture and heritage. It's an exciting window into the past that really sparks your imagination with its grand tales of warring heroes, geniuses and villains.篇3Reading the Romance of the Three Kingdoms: A Personal ReflectionEver since I was a little kid, I've always loved stories about heroes, battles, and epic adventures. That's why when my Chinese literature teacher announced we would be reading the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms this year, I was super excited! This massive book chronicles the power struggles and wars that raged across ancient China around 200 AD, after the Han Dynasty started to crumble. Even though it's a really old story, I found myself totally hooked from the very first chapter. The book is just packed with awesome characters that leap off the pages. You've got legendary warriors like Guan Yu with his iconic green dragon robe and beard as red as fire. Despite his fearsome appearance, Guan Yu was renowned for his righteousness, loyalty and martial arts skills. Whenever the battles got intense, I loved reading about how he would charge in swinging his famous guandao blade, seemingly unstoppable. I definitely wouldn't want to mess with that guy! Then you have the mischievous genius Zhuge Liang, whose brilliant strategies allowed the Shu kingdom to punch way above its weight against the much larger Wei and Wu forces. Reading about all his crazy military deceptions and psychological tricks was like something out of a magic show. My favorite was probably the incredible "Borrowing Arrows with Straw Boats"plan that allowed him to vanquish the mighty warlord Cao Cao at Chibi. I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it, but let's just say it involved some very unconventional naval maneuvers! On the other side, you had characters like the calculating Sima Yi who seemed to be constantly plotting and conspiring to expand his clan's power base. I have to admit, I found his brilliance and ambition kind of awe-inspiring, even if his methods were pretty underhanded at times. The juicy court politics and family feuds reminded me a bit of something from Game of Thrones. Except this was all based on actual historical records from that era! What really struck me though were the strong bonds of brotherhood that developed between the main characters like Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. Their oaths of allegiance to each other in the famous Peach Garden scene gave me goosebumps. It was amazing to see how they looked out for one another through thick and thin across decades of upheaval and war. Their loyalty and self-sacrifice for the greater good really drove home the key Confucian values of righteousness, benevolence and propriety that we've been studying. At the same time, the novel didn't shy away from portraying the harsh realities and human costs of the incessant warfare. I'llnever forget the gut-wrenching scene where the brilliant Zhuge Liang broke down in tears after suffering major losses at the Battle of Wuzhang Plains despite his ingenious fabian tactics. Or when Guan Yu was captured and executed by his sworn brother's own forces after being abandoned by his allies. Such tragic turns reminded me that even the greatest heroes are still only human at the end of the day. What amazed me most though was the sheer epic scale and ambition of this novel. With its sprawling cast of hundreds of characters and storylines spanning decades, it's almost like reading an ancient Chinese version of something by J.R.R Tolkien or George R.R. Martin. Except this isn't pure fantasy - these were actual events and personalities from over 1800 years ago! Just thinking about the incredible amount of research and historical knowledge the original author Luo Guanzhong must have possessed to reconstruct it all is simply mind-blowing.Reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms this year has been such an incredible journey. More than just an entertaining story, it's opened my eyes to the grand sweep of Chinese history and philosophy in a way that really resonated with me as a kid. Seeing how the characters all had to grapple with questions of loyalty, righteousness and duty amidst the relentless conflict andviolence made me ponder what I would do in their situations. Could I stay as honorable as Guan Yu if my life was in danger? Would I have the strategic genius of Zhuge Liang to overcome seemingly impossible odds? While the battles and heroic martial arts scenes definitely kept me on the edge of my seat, those deeper philosophical dimensions are what will really stick with me going forward. This novel is truly an unmatched literary classic that every Chinese student should experience. I can't wait to explore more treasures like this from China's rich cultural tradition. Who knows, maybe I'll even try my hand at writing an updated version set in modern times or the distant future! After all, the fundamental themes of courage, sacrifice and holding true to one's values in the face of adversity will always be relevant no matter what era we live in.。
The idea of kicking off the upcoming Year of the Monkey with a series of Peking Opera performances of theMonkey King is too perfect to resist. And only Peking opera star Yan Qinggu was suitable for the titular role. With a fan base that stretches across the globe, he doesn’t hide his excitement about playing a character who continues to inspire hit films and television shows in China.“The Monkey King is such a classic and unique romantic character who can easily connect with audiences, regardless of their culture,” he says.“He is like Batman or Superman whose existence as a vigilante allows them to reach criminals when the law can’t. The Monkey King is an almighty force.”As a protégé of the legendary Zheng Fanxiang, who set the bar for performing as the Monkey King in southern China, Yan explains that the character must capture the essence of magnificence and grace.“There are certain rules to follow to bring out this figure,” he says before dem -onstrating. “You have to relax your body, let your shoulders and elbows down while con-centrating all your energy at the waist. That should be the engine that leads every move.”While he routinely astounds audience with his agile yet graceful movements, Yan recalls how awkward his early training was.At 11 years old, he began to learn the art of being a wusheng – an acrobatic role in Peking opera that often depicts young war-rior characters.“If you watched the movie Farewell, my Concubine , you’ll get an idea of what our lives are like as opera actors” he says. Though it wasn’t as life-threatening as depicted in the film, Yan recalls his childhood as a time of being nauseous from countless summer-saults and painful stretching. As one of the few protégés of Zheng’s performing, Yan understands why fewer peo-ple are learning the art form. “It’s tedious, extremely physically demanding and doesn’t promise any fortunes,” he admits. “Hardly any parents nowadays would send their kids to suffer for Peking Opera.”The situation is even worse for the wush-eng roles, with most people interested in learning to become a dan – the singing role popularized by Mei Lanfang and predomi-nantly depicting women. His concerns were echoed last month by The Guardian , which described the Peking Opera industry as “less a career than a call-ing,” when covering the National Peking Opera Company’s recent visit to England.“Things are more optimistic in Japan compared to China,” he says. “To be honest, the environment is more supportive there. It’s a pity, but we tend to shut this home-grown art form out.”As a performer, Yan is taking on the chal-lenge of introducing the art form to a new generation.“It only feels strange if you’ve never seen a show,” he says. “Each flamboyant costume and movements tell a story. While it’s not as easy to understand as other forms of pop culture, it’s an art that has stood the test of time.”Fri Jan 1, 1.30pm, RMB 80-580.. 701 Fuzhou Lu, by yunnan Zhong Lu 福州路701号,近云南中路"he is like Batman or superman whose existence as avigilante allows them to reach criminals when the law can’t. the Monkey King is an almighty force"虞凯伊 y U K a I y I虞凯伊 y U K a I y ItHe return of tHe monkey kingCan China’s favorite fable save Peking Opera?by Zoey ZHa48 | D E C E M B E R 2015 | w w w.t h at s M a g s.C o Ma r t S | t h E a t R ECopyright ©博看网.
