托福TPO14口语Task4阅读文本: Comfort Zone Bias Psychologists have found that when people make important decisions, they often choose to stay in their “comfort zones”, that is, they prefer remaining in comfortable, familiar situations, rather than entering into new, unfamiliar ones. This tendency is often referred to as the comfort zone bias. When people are reasonable content, they often decide not to pursue a new opportunity, even if it attracts them and offers more advantages. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice of removing dead trees from affected areas and using the wood for lumber, plywood, and other wood products. There are several reasons why salvage logging is beneficial both to a damaged forest and to the economy.First, after a devastating fire, forests are choked with dead trees. If the trees are not removed, they will take years to decompose; in the meantime, no new trees can grow in the cramped spaces. Salvage logging, however, removes the remains of dead treesand makes room for fresh growth immediately, which i s likely to help forest areas recover from the disaster.Also, dead trees do more than just take up space. Decaying wood is a highly suitable habitat for insects such as the spruce bark beetle, which in large numbers can damage live, healthy spruce trees. So by removing rotting wood, salvage logging helps minimize the dangers of insect infestation, thus contributing to the health of the forest.Third and last, salvage logging has economic benefits. Many industries depend upon the forests for their production, and because of this a fire can have a very harmful effect on the economy. Often, however, the trees that have been damaged by natural disasters still can provide much wood that is usable by industries. Furthermore, salvage logging requires more workers than traditional logging operations do, and so it helps create additional jobs for local residents.ListeningProfessor: Salvage logging may appear to be an effective way of helping forests recover after a destructive fire or storm, but it can actually result in seriouslonger-term environmental damage. Its economic benefits are also questionable.First, cleaning up a forest after a fire or storm does not necessarily create the right conditions for tree growth. In fact, the natural process of wood decomposition enriches the soil and makes it more suitable for future generations of tree. The rapid removal of dead trees can result in soil that lacks the nutrients necessary for growth.Second, it's true that rotting wood can increase insect populations, but is this really bad for the forest? In fact, spruce bark beetles have lived in Alaskan forest for nearly a hundred years without causing major damage. And of course dead trees do not provide habitats only for harmful insects. They are also used by birds and other insects that are important contributors to the long-term health of forests. In the longrun, therefore, salvage logging may end updoing more harm to forests than harmful insects do.And third, the economic benefits of salvage logging are small and don’t last very long, in severely damaged forests, much of the lumber can be recovered only by using helicopters and other vehicles that are expensive to use and maintain. They would rather go to a lunch date or even to night parties with their family or friends. Now I am not saying that either one is the right way of doing it or the other one is obviously wrong. Relaxation is more of a personal preference. Even if your officemat/coworkers took you to a KTV bar since it’s her way of being relaxed, if that’s not your cup of tea如果你不喜欢的话, then most likely you’ll never have a good time. With this being said, I prefer spending time alone in order to relieve myself of stress, even if it’s just for that fleeting moment. Let’s have a deeper look as to why I said that.For one, as mentioned above, stress is mostly caused by external factors. Yes, factors that involve other people mostly. If I wanted to relax, I’d rather spend it in the comfort of my own room or maybe while having a quick walk around our local park. Psychologically speaking, the presence of stimuli (other people themselves and their actions toward you) can either agitate or remind you of the stress you are trying to drive away. Here’s a very simple example. Suppose, I am a student who is currently stressed by the never-ending barrage of lessons and homework一堆永远做不完的作业听不完的课. I’ve just had enough of these already that I decided to go to a local resort to unwind. Then along came my classmates. They also want to go with me there. If I went alone, spent time with just the water, trees, and blue sky, I believe the outcome would be very different.On a social perspective, this approach would be taken as a form of anti-social behavior. Those who favor the other side of the coin would often claim that real enjoyment and in particular, relaxation, can only be achieved via the presence of other people. Now this certainly holds water. However, my counter-argument is the fact that not all people are comfortable spending time withother people. Regardless of the reasons—money, distance, beliefs, and preferences, the fact is still there. When one spends time alone to relax and accordingly shoo away stress, he is doing himself a huge favor of not worrying about his friends or family members who might’ve come with him.The desire for relaxation is all but natural. Stress, on the other hand, is the culprit behind such inclination. Be it alone or with other people, relaxing activities are a sure-fire way of beating stress. However, as per the reasons indicated above, I would rather prefer spending time alone, maybe in a private hotel suite and spa, than spend time with other people of whom I am quite sure do not share my preferences wholly.。

But rainfall in the Maya homeland is unpredictably variable between years; some recent years have had three or four times more rain than other years. As a result, modern farmers attempting to grow corn in the ancient Maya homelands have faced frequent crop failures, especially in the north. The ancient Maya were presumably more experienced and did better, but nevertheless they too must have faced risks of crop failures from droughts and hurricanes.Although southern Maya areas received more rainfall than northern areas, problems of water were paradoxically more severe in the wet south. But much of the south lies too high above the water table for cenotes or wells to reach down to it. Making matters worse, most of the Yucatan Peninsula consists of karst, a porous sponge-like limestone terrain where rain runs straight into the ground and where little or no surface water remains available.How did those dense southern Maya populations deal with the resulting water problem? It initially surprises us that many of their cities were not built next to the rivers but instead on high terrain in rolling uplands. The explanation is that the Maya excavated depressions, or modified natural depressions, and then plugged up leaks in the karst by plastering the bottoms of the depressions in order to create reservoirs, which collected rain from large plastered catchment basins and stored it for use in the dry season. Travelling can expand one's outlook, amplify one's experience and make many new friends. It could be a superb lesson in one's life. If I have/possess adequate time and money to plan my tour, i would prefer to tour foreign countries. Foreign life can serve various life experiences and lifestyles which are hardly acquired in domestic life. In the identical social and environmental circumstances, people generally have relatively familiar and similar views and experiences. The distinction is, if any, slight. If people do not go abroad, they can rarely obtain refreshing ideas. For example, some people who come from highly industrialized countries with high welfare, tend to take the free healthcare and education for granted, but if they have a foreign tour in impoverished countries or regions where the food is almost far from enough, not to mention schooling, they can be taught a precious lesson: Cherish one's own life and help someone who needs help.
Oversea travelling can offer broader choices. As far as I know, some countries are as small as one common city of the United States. In such countries, if people refuse to journey abroad then they have to repeat his footprints time and time again. On the other hand, some countries are located on some lonely islands without forests and all the fish comes from the sea, if these residents want to ride a horse in the plain or taste freshwater fish, they have to travel abroad.
Besides, the exotic landscapes and customs are more curious and attractive than familiar ones.
Generally speaking, people are curious; they prefer to acquire purely refreshing experiences, rather than relatively familiar or even well-known ones. The foreign lifestyle, food and scenery are always far different from one's own domestic experiences, which is the key factor IN satisfying people's curiosity more deeply.
In conclusion, foreign tour can afford more various life experiences, more options, and satisfy people's curiosity. These advantages appeal to us. Needless to
