第I卷(选择题)一、阅读理解In addition to being open to opposite opinions, here are some techniques that could help broaden the way you think.Respect DifferenceThe mere presence of individuals from different backgrounds with different points of view in your everyday life creates an atmosphere in which people can better respond to change. Change EnvironmentsA change in your everyday life may provide the force needed to change the direction of your thinking. For some people, small changes might help reorganize your desk or take a new route to work, whereas for others, more adjustments are required.Shirt into PositivityUnlike negative emotions that bring about specific reactions, positive emotions prompt us to broaden our attention, explore our environment, and open ourselves to absorbing information. Take a few moments to think about the things in your life that are going well and for which you are grateful; this will automatically brighten your mood-and free your brain. Look as if You’ve Never SeenA Zen Buddhist concept for approaching even routine situations as if you were encountering them for the first time, “beginner’s mind” allows you to remain open to new experiences despite any expertise you may have. For instance, when you brush your teeth, take a moment to look at the toot hbrush as if you’ve never laid eyes on such an object and notice its color and shape. Think about the flavor of the toothpaste and notice how your mouth feels as you move the brush back and forth.1.What may be the benefit of small changes in life?A.Reduc ing one’s workload.B.Focusing one’s attention.C.Leading to adjustments. D.Better responding to changes.2.How can you find something new in routine situation?A.By shifting into positivity. B.By respecting difference.C.By changing environments. D.By loo king as if you’ve never seen. 3.What’s the purpose of the article?A.To introduce skills of broadening one’s thinking.B.To compare the attitudes to thinking.C.To give advice on thinking positively.D.To explain the reasons for being open.Avoiding the worst effects of climate change will require action. But it’s hard to take action when you don’t even know there’s a problem. Around the world, only half of adults understand that humans are causing climate change through activities that produce greenhouse gases. But the picture is different for kids. Previous work has shown that children are more engaged and more knowledgeable than adults are about climate change. The question is, can we harness this to make a difference?“We had come across this idea that kids are capable of influencing their parents. And when we say influence, we really mean just teaching them.” said Daniella Lawson, a social scientist at NC State University. “That’s what we set out to really investigate: can we design things in such a way that kids are able to teach their parents about climate change. A parent is willing and able to listen to their children speaking to them instead of just an adult on the street or a different climate communicator. ”To test the idea, Lawson set up a wildlife-based climate course for kids. This approach was based on previous courses, but the team added a twist: involving the parents. First, parents were invited to come along to an event that formed a part of the course. An d that’s not all. “So we also had students interview their parents. And this interview never mentioned climate change specifically. But it had questions like: how have you seen the weather change over the last five to ten years? Do you believe the sea level is rising? How do you think that could impact our communities?”The study showed that the course did indeed increase concern about climate change: notjust among the kids, but their parents too. And there were some surprising findings in the results. These findings come at a time when more kids are becoming climate activists. And Lawson says that her study shows just how persuasive young people’s voices can be. 4.What does the underlined word “harness” in paragraph one refer to?A.Adopt. B.Accumulate.C.Review. D.Control.5.What can be learned from the first paragraph?A.Effective actions have been taken to deal with climate change.B.Most adults have realized the climate damages caused by themselves.C.Children better adults in the area of climate change and its effects.D.Adults and children will cooperate to deal with climate change.6.About climate change teaching, which one will Daniella Lawson most probably agree with? A.Kids can be taught by adults.B.Adults can learn from the kids.C.Climate communicators are more professional.D.Parents are more likely to consult street adults.7.What can be learned about the course?A.The course involved is completely new.B.Interviews and questionnaires are necessary in the course.C.Adults and kids study separately during the course.D.The course is relatively effective in climate education. It was New Year’s night. An aged man was standing at a window. Few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal-the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the age leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrances of the two roads. One leading to a peaceful, sunny place covered with flowers and fruits; the other leading to a deep dark cave which was endless. He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, “Oh youth, return! Oh, my father, place me once more at the entrance to life”. B ut both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness, and these were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of himself. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were then honored and happy on that New Year’s night. The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way with shame and grief. He dared no longer to look towards the heaven where his parents lived. He burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!”And his youth did return, for all this was o nly a dream on New Year’s night. He was still young though his faults were real. He had not yet entered the deep dark eave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.8.Which of the following words can best describe the aged man?A.Confident. B.Selfless.C.Regretful. D.Fortunate.9.What can we learn from Para3?A.The man’s friends missed their youth.B.The man’s friends suffered failure finally.C.The man wasted his life at one time.D.The man was lonely in his childhood.10.What can be inferred from the text?A.The old man didn’t take his father’s advice.B.The old man was enjoying his journey.C.The old man’s father accompanied him during the journey.D.The old man was like lights in the darkness.11.What is the best title for the text?A.A Special New Year’s Night B.An Old Man’s HesitationC.Youth Coming Back D.Two Roads to TakeThe English-language version of Wikipedia has almost six million articles. And if you’re a cheating student, that’s six million essays already written for you. But plagiarism (剽窃) isn’t really an effective way—just type the text into a search engine and the game is over. Then what about having a ghostwriter compose your final essay?“Standard plagiarism software cannot detect this kind of cheating.” said Stephan Lorenzen, a data analyst at the University of Copenhagen. In Denmark, where he’s based, ghostwriting is a growing problem at high schools. So Lorenzen and his colleagues created a program called Ghostwriter that can detect the cheats. At its central part is a neural (神经的) network trained and tested on 130,000 real essays from 10,000 Danish students. After reading through tens of thousands of essays labeled as being written by the same author or not, the machine taught itself to tune into the characteristics that might tip off cheating. For example, did a student’s essays share the same styles of punctuation? The same spelling mistakes?By examining inconsistencies like those, Ghostwriter was able to seek out a cheated essay nearly 90 percent of the time. The team presented the results at the European Meeting on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning. There’s one more aspect here that could help students. Your high school essays probably get better over time as you learn to write-and the machine can detect that. The final idea is to detect students who are at risk because their development in writing style isn’t as you’d expect. Teachers could thus give extra help to kids who really need it, while sniffing out the cheaters too. 12.What can be true about a cheating student trying to finish an essay?A.His cheating may be detected in a certain way.B.Essays offered by WikiPedia can’t be downloaded.C.He won’t hire a ghostwriter to write one for h imself.D.Ghost cheating can be detected by Standard plagiarism software.13.Which aspect of the program “Ghostwriter” is talked about in Para. 3?A.Its components. B.Its weaknesses.C.Its influences. D.Its working theory.14.Which one of the following is the function of “Ghostwriter” ?A.It never fails to find out a cheated essay.B.It can detect a student’s progress in writing.C.It can guide a student to correct his writing style.D.It relieves teachers of giving extra help.15.Where is the text most likely from?A.A guidebook. B.A magazine.C.A novel. D.A diary.二、完形填空It is 5 am and it’s too dark to see the fields of volcanic rock and trees on either side of the highway. One of the cells was able to calculate addition: the presence or absence of each of two chemicals would switch on a reactioninside the cell that would make it shine different colours. The other cell worked in the same way but could subtract amounts. This kind of biological circuit resembles a simple logic circuit in a computer. In theory, it could be used to indicate the presence of an infectious substance while in fact it failed. Most biological reactions in the body aren’t that simple, though. They rarely rely on “one input and one output” – instead, multiple inputs lead to different outputs. For instance, a high level of calcium in the body in the presence of a specific hormone may suggest one disease, but a high level of calcium along with another hormone might indicate a completely different condition. To be more practical, biological computers need to be able to perform more complex mathematics. However, it is hard to pack multiple calculations into a single cell. To get around this, Fussenegger and his team have engineered a multicellular system, in which different cells each perform a separate calculation and pass on the results to each other. The system has nine cells, each containing a biochemical reaction that responds to three chemical inputs – similar to an AND, NOT and OR system in a traditional electronic circuit. These cells coordinate their activities by releasing chemicals that pass from one cell to the other. Together, they form a fully biological circuit that can respond to multiple inputs.“Although it is not at a stage yet where we can test on animals, we believe it is the most complex biological computer ever assembled,” says Fussenegger. “This work addresses one of the major limitations in synthetic biology (合成生物学) –a lack of programmable devices,” says Ángel Goni-Moreno, a synthetic biologist at Newcastle University, UK. He says that Fussenegger’s multicellular approach enables you to programme the circuit and achieve different calculations just by connecting the nine cells in different configurations (设置).In the future, a biological computer like this could be used to monitor more complex medical conditions. For example, it could respond to a rise in calcium, a drop in a hormone and an increase in a biomarker, which together would signal the presence of a specific type of cancer, help diagnose it and alert the user to seek appropriate treatment.28. The underlined word “subtract” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.A. add upB. take awayC. split upD. give away29. What was the progress made in Fussenegger’s early research?A. A biological circuit was implanted in one of kidney cells.B. The indication of infectious substances became a reality.C. Engineered kidney cells could switch on biological reactions.D. Certain cells were made capable of performing mathematics.30. What has made Fussenegger’s current multicellular system so special?A. It has all the functions of a traditional electronic circuit.B. It is programmable and able to perform different mathematics.C. It has successfully packed multiple calculations into a single cell.D. It has been tested through a series of experiments on animals.31. What is the best title for the passage?A. Smart cells indicating various cancersB. Electronic circuit made from multi-cellsC. Programmable cells implanted in human bodiesD. Biological computer made from human cellsD“Two centuries ago, Lewis and Clark left St. Louis to explore the new lands acquired in the Louisiana Purcha se,” George W. Bush said, announcing his desire for a program to send men and women to Mars. They made that journey in the spirit of discovery. America has ventured forth into space for the same reasons.”Yet there are vital differences between Lewis and C lark’s expedition and a Mars mission. First, they were headed to a place where hundreds of thousands of people were already living. Second, they were certain to discover places and things of immediate value to the new nation. Third, their venture cost next to nothing by today’s standards. A Mars mission may be the single most expensive non-wartime undertaking in U.S. history.Appealing as the thought of travel to Mars is, it does not mean the journey makes sense, even considering the human calling to explore. And Mars as a destination for people makes absolutely no sense with current technology.Present systems for getting from Earth’s surface to low-Earth orbit are so fantastically expensive that merely launching the 1,000 tons or so of spacecraft and equipment a Mars mission would require could be accomplished only by cutting health-care benefits, education spending, or other important programs—or by raising taxes. Absent some remarkable discovery, astronauts, geologists, and biologists once on Marscould do little more than analyze rocks and feel awestruck(敬畏的) staring into the sky of another world. Yet rocks can be analyzed by automated probes without risk to human life, and at a tiny fraction of the cost of sending people. It is interesting to note that when President Bush unveiled his proposal, he listed these recent major achievements of space exploration pictures of evidence of water on Mars, discovery of more than 100 planets outside our solar system, and study of the soil of Mars. All these accomplishments came from automated probes or automated space telescopes. Bush’s proposal, which calls for reprogramming some of NASA’s present budget into the Mars effort, might actually lead to a reduction in such unmanned science—the one aspect of space explorati on that’s working really well.Rather than spend hundreds of billions of dollars to hurl tons toward Mars using current technology, why not take a decade or two or however much time is required researching new launch systems and advanced propulsion (推进力)? lf new launch systems could put weight into orbit affordably, and advanced propulsion could speed up that long, slow transit to Mars, the dream of stepping onto the red planet might become reality. Mars will still be there when the technology is ready.32. What do Lewis and Clark’s expedition and a Mars mission have in common?A. Instant value.B. Human inhabitance.C. Venture cost.D. Exploring spirit.33. Bush’s proposal is challenged for the following reasons except that.A. its expenditure is too huge for the government to afford.B. American people’s well-being will suffer a lot if it is implementedC. great achievements have already been made in Mars exploration in AmericaD. unmanned Mars exploration sounds more practical and economical for the moment34. Which cannot be concluded from the passage?A. Going to Mars using current technology is quite unrealistic.B. A Mars mission will in turn promote the development of unmanned program.C. Bush’s proposal is based on thre e recent great achievements of space explorationD. The achievements in space exploration show how well unmanned science has developed.35. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Risky as it is, a Mars mission helps to retain Americas position as a technological leader.B. Observing the amazing night sky on Tuesday nights. We humans are sweet on sugar. That makes sense. All animals need sugar to live. It ' s the fuel that powers our cells. So it' s not surprising that we ' re born to want the sweet stuff.Sugar stores the sun' s energy like a battery. After a meal, your body breaks down foods into their building blocks. It uses some sugars for energy right away. The rest get stored for the body to break down later. It ' s a myth that sugar makes you extremely excited, but having a sugary snack can give you a quick burst of energy. That ' s because the sugars in sweet foods are easyfor your body to turn into fuel. When you eat other kinds of foods, like vegetables, it takes longer for your body to break the sugars down. These days it' s easy to find sweet snacks. Sodas, candy, cakes and even foods that seem healthy , such as yogurt, can be packed with sugar. Food makers add sugar, because they know that to humans, sweet makes everything taste better. Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of extra sugar everyday. That' s way more than what is good for us.Eating too much sugar can cause more than a stomach-ache. It can make people overweight, decay the teeth and even cause diabetes. However, experts aren ' t worried about naturally sweet foods- the problem is added sugar. So go ahead and enjoy a sweet apple or even a sugar-rich carrot that are also full of vitamins and other good stuff.Even cake is great once in a while , as long as you don ' t overdo it. After all, no one wants life to be dull. And your body needs its fuel!4.The first two paragraphs are mainly developed by _'A.cause and effect.B.problem and solution.C.giving examples .D.making comparisons.5.People may be tncked into eating too much sugar because .A.no one wants life to be boring.B.we ' re born to want the sweet stuff.C.so-called healthy food can be packed with sugar.D.sugar is the fuel for the plants and animals on the Earth.6.What does the author want to stress in Para. 4?A.We' d better say no to sweet foods.B.Experts are worried about added sugar.C.Eating too much sugar is bad for our health.D.We ' d better consume sugar from natural sources.7.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Sugar Is Everywhere.B.Sugar Brings Happiness.C.Why Does Sugar Taste So good?D.Why Does Sugar Make Us Fat?Humans have uniquely expressive faces. We laugh, we cry, we turn red with feeling. Now, scientists report that blue-and-yellow macaws(金刚鹦鹉) may join us in this club of emotions– at least, when it comes to blushing.试卷第4页,总10页Parrots are known for being clever and chatty. They ' re even skilled enough to make their own tools and occasionally nose their way into human machines like cars. Their curiosity and courage are what make them excellent pets. So it ' s no surprise that they have their own range of communication tools. On the whole, birds are no strangers to blushing. Many different kinds of birds have been known to exhibit this hehavior. Parrot owners often notice it in their pets. The motivations behind it are still a mystery to scientists , though. To zero in on why macaw faces blush, some scientists led by Aline Bertin of the University of Tours studied five captive blue-and-yellow macaws as they interacted with each other and their human caretakers. They were amazed to see that human attention seemed to make the macaws blush. The blushing died down when the caretakers ignored the parrots.Facial expressions can be signs of a human ' s emotional state. Likewise, bird blushing could convey well-being. It' s not quite as obvious as smiling. Still, it ' s fairly impressive. After all, these macaws don' t have the same facial muscles that we do. The birds are much smarter and kinder than they look. They are believed to be as intelligent as monkeys.Bertin and the other scientists believe their work opens the door to further research. One limitation of the study is that no macaws in natural environment have been observed. That makes it hard to draw conclusions about the birds as a species. They are also not quite sure what the blushing means. There is still more to learn about these possible expressions of emotion. 8.Which of the following best explains" captive" in paragraph 3 ? A . Unique. B . Talkative. C . Curious. D . Caged. 9.Birds might blush_____________.A . when people ignore them .B . to show they are happy.C . to show they are hungry .D . when something upsets them. 10.What is TRUE about scientists ' reaction to macaws blushing? A . They are puzzled by how birds can communicate with one another. B . They are motivated to continue studying how macaws express emotion. C . They are curious about why other birds are unable to convey emotion. D . They are interested to study monkeys to see if they blush as strongly. 11.What is the main idea of the text? A . Parrots make excellent pets.B.Parrots are skilled to make tools.C.The macaws can communicate with each other.D.The macaws can go red in the face with feeling.Kong Qiu,better known as Confucius, was born in 551 B. C. , in the Lu state of China. His teachings, preserved in " Lunyu ", focused on creating models for good behavior and setting educational standards. He died in 479 B. C. Confucianism later became the official philosophy of the Chinese empire, and was extremely influential during the Han, Tang and Song dynasties.Little is known of Confucius ' childhood. " Records of the Historian" , written by Ssu-ma Chi’en,offers the most detailed account of Confucius ' life. Howeve r, some modem histonans question its accuracy, regarding it as myth, not fact. The book says that Confucius was born into a royal family while others say that Confucius was bom into poverty. One fact is clear, though: Confucius lived during a time of great trouble in China.Over 2 ,500 years ago , China ' s Chou Empire began to fall apart. Warring Chinese states caused it to break down. Traditional Chinese values then began to decline. Confucius saw this as an opportunity to strengthen the old Chinese values and customs. His ideas were based on the principle of " ren" or "loving others" while practicing self-control. He believed that ren could be put into action using the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule is" do not do to others what you do not wish for yourself. "Confucius ' political beliefs were likewise based on the concept of self-control. He believed that a leader should stay humble and treat his followers with care. In doing so, he would lead by positive example. According to Confucius, leaders could motivate their subjects to follow the law by teaching them virtue. His philosophy of education focused on the " Six Arts". To Confucius, the main objective of being an educator was to teach people to be honest and kind. He tried to encourage people to be more polite to each other.By the second century B. C. , during China ' s first Han Dynasty, his ideas became the foundation for the state government. Today, he is widely considered one of the most influential teachers in Chinese history.12.Confucius would be MOST likely to agree that the purpose of education isA.to have rich knowledge.B.to live a good moral life.试卷第6页,总10页C . to gain wealth and power .D . to learn six core subjects. 13.Each of the following affected Confucius ' ideas EXCEPT . A . the Han Dynasty . B . the Chou Dynasty.C . traditional Chinese values .D . the war time experience. 14.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text? A . Confucius led a bitter life in his childhood.B . Traditional values were gone because of the end of Chou.C . Confucius ' ideas influenced the leadership of the country.D . Confucius devotedly promoted ideas contrary to traditional ones. 15.Self-control is central to Confucius ' philosophy because _________ . A . it is the basis of the state government. B . it is the foundation of the Golden Rule. C . it is necessary to be a productive philosopher. D . it helps people be humble and set an example. 二、七选五Earth is home to around 7,000 languages, around half of which are expected to disappear by 2100.Languages disappear for many reasons. Sometimes younger generations stop leaming a language because parents want children to fit in. 16. Native American children of the late-19th century were required to attend boarding schools where educators forbade them from speaking their native languages. The United Nations ranks endangered languages according to their risk level. For example, a "critically endangered" language is one that even grandparents don ' t speak often. New York ' s Onondaga language is an example with only 50 speakers left. An " extinct" language has no speakers. It is gone forever. Alaska ' s Eyak language is one example. 17.18. In the same way, different languages contnbute to cultural diversity. Saving these languages benefits our understanding of other cultures. Languages can show how a society looks at the world and what it values. A language may describe something in a way that is funny , too. In Welsh , it rains not cats and dogs , but old wives and walking sticks. The Endangered Language Alliance wants to save languages from disappearing. 19. However, its efforts are limited. If an endangered language is going to make a real comeback, it ' ll probably get its start in schools. For nearly 100 years, public schools in Hawaii did not teach the Hawaiian language. Now students can keep learning in Hawaiian from elementary schools to college and beyond.20. At least one did. In 1881, a Jewish linguist named Eliezer Ben-Yehuda brought the 3 ,000-year-old language Hebrew back to life. Today it is one of the official languages of the country of Israel, with more than 4 million speakers. A . The last person who spoke it died in 2008. B . Why should we save endangered languages? C . Various animals and plants benefit our environment. D . With just 5 speakers left,it is absolutely endangered. E. Can a language with zero native speakers come back to life? F. Sometimes societies force minorities to give up their language. C . The nonprofit group finds native speakers and records their stories. 三、完形填空The rosebushes were finally in full bloom on that spnng moming. The _______ of roses always brings to mind Wanda' s childhood memories.
