complain a lot if so.“The trick is finding a balance between your new relationship and guiding your child toward independence,”says Elina Furman, author of Boomerang Nation.“Parents have to understand they can’t hesitate (犹豫),because that will make young adults feel unable to live on their own.” So you should sit down together and set certain rules.Whether it’s $50 and some housework or simply $300 a month, your child should contribute to the household. But don’t run off on vacation with that money. This could be an opportunity to teach the importance of saving for retirement or life goals.Furman advises investing (投资)your kid’s rent so he can use it for, say, his first apartment.Too many young adults think that if they can’t find a job in their chosen career, they don’t have to be working. Not true. While your child looks for that dream job,he should earn small wages in fields such as food service or child care. You shouldn’t have to monitor his job hunt, but if he isn’t getting anywhere,it’s time to step in.Talk about career moves he may be missing.Consider meeting with a career counselor (职业规划顾问) to help get your child on the right course.Set a cutoff time, because it’s easy to keep moving out.Fixing a date will encourage your child to find a job.And you’ll feel a sense of comfort knowing that your child won’t live at home forever.“The more specific you get now,the less likely that conflict will break out later,” Furman says.1.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.What to do when college grads move back home.B.What to do to make your kids out of home.C.How to help your children on their career path.D.How to get along well with your kids.2.If your child stays too long home after graduation from college, you should________.A.teach him how to save for retirementB.buy him a small apartmentC.set a time limit for him to move outD.keep him off small-wage fields3.What does “they” in the second paragraph refer to? A.Parents. B.Children. C.Adults. D.Companies. 4.What should the rent from your child be used for? A.You can spend it on holiday.B.You can pay the career counselor.C.You can keep it for child care.D.You can invest it for the kid’s housing。

Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity (长寿) boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers (鳏夫) were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man's life and two to a woman's. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or selfharm.Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn't smoke. There's a flip_side,_however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse's death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds favour marriage. In a 30year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socioeconomic factors, healthservice provision, emotional support and other more physiological (生理的) mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immunesystem, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100.The ultimate social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says, “People are interconnected, so their health is interconnected.”11.William Farr's study and other studies show that ________.A.social life provides an effective cure for illnessB.being sociable helps improve one's quality of lifeC.women benefit more than men from marriageD.marriage contributes a great deal to longevity12.Linda Waite's studies support the idea that ________.A.older men should quit smoking to stay healthyB.marriage can help make up for ill healthC.the married are happier than the unmarriedD.unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life13.It can be inferred from the context that the underlined part “flip side”(Para. 2) refers to ________.A.the disadvantages of being marriedB.the emotional problems arising from marriageC.the responsibility of taking care of one's familyD.the consequence of a broken marriage14.What does the author say about social networks?A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage.B.They help develop people's community spirit.C.They provide timely support for those in need.D.They help relieve people of their life's burdens.15.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.It's important that we develop a social network when young.B.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.C.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.D.We should share our social networks with each other.BDu Fu(712—770) was one of the greatest poets in the Tang Dynasty. His poetry first came to be recognized at the Tang Dynasty. Readers of many different periods have considered Du Fu to be the greatest poet of the Chinese tradition. Such general agreement can partially be explained by the immense variety of his works, which hold up quite well to different tastes and historical changes in fashion. Like Shakespeare in English tradition, Du Fu's poetry came to be so deeply bound up with the constitution of literary value that generation after generation of poets and critics rediscovered themselves and their interests in some aspect of the poet.Chinese critics from the Song Dynasty referred to Du Fu as the “poethistorian”. Both before and after the An Lushan Revolt, Du Fu witnessed a typical political and social situation: the common people still lived in poverty while the emperor and histop officials enjoyed a foolishly luxurious life. He composed many poems such as Song of the Warchariots, Three Officials, and Three Departures. His poems expressed his dissatisfaction with the government and his great pity for the common people. Du Fu used his poems to comment on current events and historical images. Du Fu became the historian by creating his responses to particular situations.Du Fu was talented. When he was young, he wanted to get a good job in the government. Unfortunately Du Fu was refused several times. It was in his fifties that he began to serve as a minor official in Chang'an (Xi'an). Gongbu was his official title and probably he was in charge of the local industry.Du Fu was not a skilled survivor in government politics. He was dismissed in the form of a transfer to the post of personnel administrator in Huazhou and so left Chang'an. Du Fu soon gave up this minor post in disgust and set off with his family to Qinzhou in the northwest. After a short stay he moved on again and in 759 he arrived in Chengdu. He set up a modest cottage with some money he borrowed from his friend who served as a local governor. In the cottage he had a simple and peaceful life for three years, writing about 240 poems. Mostly inspired by the cottage, the stream nearby and the scenery in Chengdu, these poems give the impression that he was happier in Chengdu than any other time in his life. The poems of this period sound relaxed and happy.Du Fu left Chengdu after 762 and wandered in the southern provinces and eventually died of illness in 770. After his death, the people of Chengdu built a shrine on the site of his garden to honor him, which is known as part of Du Fu Thatched Cottage now.16.Why does the author compare Du Fu to Shakespeare?A.Du Fu's poetry was written following Shakespeare's style.B.Du Fu's poetry referred to the social change critically.C.Du Fu and Shakespeare were best friends.D.Shakespeare read a lot of Du Fu's poems.17.Du Fu ________ when he was young.A.didn't want to be an officialB.was worried about the educationC.wasn't liked by the emperorD.was not offered an opportunity to work in the government18.What did Du Fu describe in most of his poems?A.The luxurious life that the emperor and his top officials enjoyed.B.His happy life.C.His responses to particular situations.D.His dissatisfaction with the government and his great pity for the common people.19.What did people do after Du Fu died according to the passage?A.They built a shrine to honor him.B.They rebuilt the cottage he had lived into a high building.C.They destroyed his cottage.D.They made a carved statue of him.20.What's the best title of the passage?A.Du Fu—the most important politician in the Tang DynastyB.The origin of Du Fu Thatched CottageC.Du Fu—one of the greatest poets in the Tang DynastyD.Du Fu was not a skilled survivor in government politicsⅢ.读写任务阅读下面的短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Critics call her one of the greatest writers of our time.Lucille Clifton was born Thelma Lucille Sayles in Depew, New York in 1936. She was named Thelma after her mother. Lucille was the name of one of her father's ancestors. When the younger one got older she chose to call herself Lucille.Lucille Clifton began writing poetry when she was about ten years old. She had developed an interest in poetry because of her mother, Thelma Sayles. Her mother was also a poet although her poems were never published. As a child Lucille would sit on her mother's lap and listen as she read poetry. She learned to love words and the power of words. That stayed with her as she grew. While her mother taught her to love poetry, her father gave her the gift of storytelling. He would tell Lucille interesting stories about her ancestors, especially the one named Lucille who was his grandmother. Samuel Clifton said she was the first black woman to be legally hanged in the state of Virginia. Lucille Clifton wrote about it in her poem called “Lucy”.She often talked about her love for words. She loved the sound of words and the way the words felt in her mouth. She loved finding interesting ways to use wordsto express what was happening in the world.Unlike her mother, Lucille Clifton's poetry was anything but traditional. Her poems do not rhyme or follow a special kind of pattern. They do not use fancy words. They do not deal in make-believe. Her poetry is known for being simple, truthful and direct. It is written the way people speak, in a casual, relaxed language. There is very little punctuation(标点) and even less capitalization. Many of the poems are uncomfortably honest. Lucille Clifton often said that she tried to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Over the years, she seems to have perfected that art.16.Which of the following may be the reason why Lucille Clifton chose to call herself Lucille instead of Thelma?A.To show her love to her mother.B.To show her love to her beloved teacher.C.To show respect to her great-grandmother.D.To show her respect to a great poet.17.From the passage, we know that Lucille Clifton is ________.A.funny B.creativeC.selfish D.beautiful18.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Lucille Clifton's parents affected her a lot.B.Lucille Clifton's poetry was very traditional.C.Thelma Sayles published many poems.D.Lucille Clifton's poetry was very formal.19.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A.Lucille Clifton's great works.B.Lucille Clifton's poem background.C.Lucille Clifton's poem style.D.Lucille Clifton's poem words.20.The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph probably refers to ________.A.Samuel CliftonB.Samuel Clifton's experienceC.Samuel Clifton's grandmotherD.Lucille's great grandmother's storyⅢ.阅读表达阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到相应的横线上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious testtakers.Sian Beilock says, “They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about them as their cognitive(认知的)horsepower that they could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious testtakers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of 20 anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12 percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.The research shows that for students who are highly testanxious, who'd done the writing intervention(排解), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these testing situations. But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.11.The purpose of the passage is ________.A. to build the confidence of the highly anxious testtakersB. to introduce a research about the anxious testtakersC. to improve the performance of the testtakersD. to tell something about the highly anxious testtakers12.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to________.A. attention and memory resourcesB. worries about the consequencesC. concerns about the examD. cognitive horsepower13.According to the research, the solution to the test anxiety is to________.A. sit quietly before the examB. prepare well before the testC. set their mind on happy memoriesD. write about their feelings before the test14.The result of the research suggests that ________.A. proper amount of burden may turn out to be a good thingB. avoiding facing the problem may contribute to relaxationC. facing the fears bravely may help one to achieve moreD. taking no action before difficulty may result in successBSeen from space the Earth is covered in a blue mantle. It is a planet on which the continents are dwarfed(相形见绌)by the oceans surrounding them and the vastness of the marine area.An astonishing 80 percent of all the life on Earth is to be found hidden beneath the waves and this vast global ocean pulses around our world driving the natural forces which keep life on our planet. The oceans provide necessary sources of protein, energy, minerals and other products of use the world over and the rolling of the sea across the planet creates over half our oxygen, drives weather systems and natural flows of energy and nutrients around the world, transports water masses many times greater than all the rivers on land combined and keeps the Earth habitable.Without the global ocean there would be no life on Earth. It is seriously worrying, then, that we are damaging the oceans on a scale that is unimaginable to most people. We now know that human activity can have serious influences on the vital forces governing our planet. We have fundamentally changed our global climate and are just beginning to understand the consequences of that. As yet largely unseen, but just as serious, are the influences we are having on the oceans. A healthy ocean has diverse ecosystems and strong and healthy habitats. The actual state of our oceans is a far cry from this natural level.A large quantity of human pressures are being exerted both directly and indirectly on ocean ecosystems the world over. Consequently ecosystems are collapsing as marine species are driven towards extinction and ocean habitats are destroyed. With the decrease and removement of their diversity, ocean ecosystems are losing their natural recovery.15.The 2nd and the 3rd paragraphs are given mainly to describe________.A.what the oceans look likeB.what the oceans are made up ofC.what lives in the oceansD.what functions the oceans have16.The oceans provide all the following except ________.A. various marine creaturesB. rich living resourcesC. all natural forcesD. comfortable habitats for man17.Man has not yet realized that ________.A.he has done harm to the oceansB.he has done harm to the planetC.he has benefited from the oceansD.he has benefited from the planet18.The best title for this passage should be ________.A. Protecting our planetB. Defending our oceansC. Making good use of our oceansD. A glimpse of the oceansⅢ.完成句子19.Oil ____________________________, they had to take a taxi home. (run) 汽油已没了,他们只好打车回家。

The u nderlined pronoun “it” in the fourth paragraph probably refers to ________.A.Samuel CliftonB.Samuel Clifton's experienceC.Samuel Clifton's grandmotherD.Lucille's great-grandmother's storyBDu Fu(712~770) was one of the greatest poets in the Tang Dynasty. Like Shakespeare in English tradition, Du Fu's poetry came to be so deeply bound up with the constitution of literary value that generation after generation of poets and critics rediscovered themselves and their interests in some aspect of the poet.Chinese critics from the Song Dynasty referred to Du Fu as the “poet-historian”. Both before and after the An Lushan Revolt, Du Fu witnessed a typical political and social situation: the common people still lived in poverty while the emperor and his top officials enjoyed a foolishly luxurious life. He composed many poems such as Song of the War Chariots, Three Officials, and Three Departures. It was in his fifties that he began to serve asa minor official in Chang'an (Xi'an). After his death, the people of Chengdu built a shrine on the site of his garden to honor him, which is known as part of Du Fu Thatched Cottage now.16.Why does the author compare Du Fu to Shakespeare?A.Du Fu's poetry was written following Shakespeare's style.B.Du Fu's poetry referred to the social change critically.C.Du Fu and Shakespeare were best friends.D.Shakespeare read a lot of Du Fu's poems.17.Du Fu ________ when he was young.A.didn't want to be an officialB.was worried about the educationC.wasn't liked by the emperorD.was not offered an opportunity to work in the government18.What did Du Fu describe in most of his poems?A.The luxurious life that the emperor and his top officials enjoyed.B.His happy life.C.His responses to particular situations.D.His dissatisfaction with the government and his great pity for the common people.19.What did people do after Du Fu died according to the passage?A.They built a shrine to honor him.B.They rebuilt the cottage he had lived into a high building.C.They destroyed his cottage.D.They made a carved statue of him.20.What's the best title of the passage?A.Du Fu-the most important politician in the Tang DynastyB.The origin of Du Fu Thatched CottageC.Du Fu-one of the greatest poets in the Tang DynastyD.Du Fu was not a skilled survivor in government politicsⅢ.读写任务阅读下面的短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Professor Beilock says students cantry it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.16.The purpose of the passage is ________.A. to build the confidence of the highly anxious testtakersB. to introduce a research about the anxious testtakersC. to improve the performance of the testtakersD. to tell something about the highly anxious testtakers17.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.A. attention and memory resourcesB. worries about the consequencesC. concerns about the examD. cognitive horsepower18.According to the research, the solution to the test anxiety isto________.A. sit quietly before the examB. prepare well before the testC. set their mind on happy memoriesD. write about their feelings before the test19.The result of the research suggests that ________.A. proper amount of burden may turn out to be a good thingB.avoiding facing the problem may contribute to relaxationC. facing the fears bravely may help one to achieve moreD. taking no action before difficulty may result in successⅢ.阅读表达阅读下面短文并回答问题。

Before you start a discussion, however, make sure you understand which topics are suitable and which are considered taboos (禁忌) in a particular culture. Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their local history, art, and customs. They expect questions about their family and are sure to show pictures of their children. You may feel free to ask similar questions of your Latin American friends. The French think of conersation as an art form, and they enjoy the value of lively discussions as well as disagreements. For them, arguments can be interesting — and they can cover pretty much or any topic — as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent (智慧的) manner. In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. In Japan, China and Korea, however, people are much more private. They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious (和谐的) business relationship they're trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children. As a general rule, it's best not to talk about politics or religion (宗教) with your business friends. This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. In addition, discussing one's salary is usually considered unsuitable. Sportsis typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticize a national sport. Instead, be friendly and praise your host's team.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了不同国家非正式谈话的常见话题和一些禁忌。
