2016年11月学位英语真题Part 1 Reading comprehension (30%)Passage 1If the Dakota Access Pipeline(输油管道)is completed, it will carry nearly half a million barrels of oil across four states every day. Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), a Texas-based company behind the $ 3.8 billion project, hopes to finish construction this year. But the Standing ROCK Sioux, an American Indian tribe, is determined to stop the 1,172-mile pipeline from being built. (76) Both sides show no signs of backing down. The Dakota Access Pipeline was announced in 2014. A section of it will run near the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. A reservation is an area of land set aside for American Indians. The tribe says the construction threatens to destroy historical areas and ancient burial sites. They also say the pipeline could pollute their main water source, the Missouri River. In April, the Standing Rock Sioux began a protest against the project. They camped at the construction site. Since then, thousands of people, including people from other American Indian tribes, have traveled to the site to protest.ETP says that the pipeline will have built-in safety measures to protect against oil leaks. Workers will also monitor it remotely, and will be able to close valves(阀门) within three minutes if leaks are detected.American Indians have been staging a nonviolent protest for months. The protest took a turn last week when police were called to keep the peace between protesters and armed security guards hired by the company.(77) Twenty-eight people have been arrested since then and charged with interfering with the pipeline construction.1. In Maine, more than 87,500 acres of forest will become government-protected parkland for the first time. In Hawaii, a national monument created by President George W, Bush in 2006 will expand to about 582,578 square miles, four times its current size.Obama has now created or enlarged 26 national monuments during his presidency. As a result, his a dministration says, Obama has protected more of the nation’s land than any other president has. But some residents and officials, in both Maine and Hawaii, object to the plans. (78) They say their local economies depend on the use of these areas. In establishing this monument, Obama took the side of conservationists (自然资源保护者) who want laws to protect wild lands. Creating a national park usually requires the approval of Congress. But a 1906 federal law allows the president to establish national monument on his own.The lands’ new status as a monument means that mining and drilling operations are forbidden there. (79) It may also severely limit activities such as logging, road-building, and hunting. Some of Maine’s politicians who want to protect the state’s logging industries say Obama should not have acted alone. They say Washington should not tell the states how to use their land, especially when people’s jobs are at stake. Maine politician Susan Collins said the president should have listened to Maine lawmakers and residents, as well as the U.S. Congress before making his decision. However, those who support the president’s decision say the establishment of the new monument will lead to new jobs through tourism.6. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage One We are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet? Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was setup as recently as the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks didn‘t work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sen through another part. In this way the computer network system would keep on working all the time. At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks began to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. At the beginning of the 1990s, computers became cheaper and easier to use. And scientists developed software that made Internet “surfing” more convenient. Today it is easy to get online and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day.16. He did not even look at Alan. Alan spoke to him again. “Excuse me, sir,” he said, “but could you please tell me what time it is?”This time the man looked at him, but he did not speak and looked quickly away. Alan thought to himself: well, he can hear me; he must be just rude. So Alan asked again, “Why wouldn‘t you tell me the time, sir?”The man turned towards him and said, “Put yourself in my shoes. I am standing here waiting for a taxi. You come up to me and ask me for the time. If I tell it to you, you will thank me. I will say ‘That’s all right.‘ You may then say ’It‘s a beautiful day,’ to which I may reply ‘Yes, I like these sunny winter days.’ Before we know what is happening we have a friendly conversation. Let‘s start with four. The beach, famous for its water temperature, air temperature and waves, is the first beauty. There are hundreds of miles of beaches on the twenty islands of Hawaii. They are thought to be among the finest beaches in the world. Then, what do you think would be the second beautiful thing? It is volcanoes (火山), ofcourse. These volcanoes are not just a part of the islands; they made the islands in the first place. Because of them the islands are still growing. What would be the third thing of beautythat the first visitor to Hawaii would notice? It probably wouldn’t be just one thing, but many things: all the wonderful fruits and flowers of the islands. Sugar cane, bananas and pineapples are Hawaii‘s biggest exports. Sugar cane has been growing in Hawaii for a thousand years. As for pineapples, the islands produce more than any other places in the world, which has made Dole Company the biggest fruit-packing company in the world. The fourth and most beautiful thing about Hawaii is the people who live there. The Hawaiians never rush, and perhaps this is because they care more for human life than they care for the machine. There is an old Hawaiian law that a man can go to sleep in the middle of the road if he wants to. What makes the people of Hawaii so beautiful is their feeling about people. There are 64 different combinations of races on the islands, and they all live in peace. They believe “Above all nations is humanity.” That is the most beautiful thing of all.26. According to the passage, Hawaii is made up of ___________.A. one islandB. twenty islandsC. sixty-four islandsD. hundreds of islands27. Why are the volcanoes so special to the islands?A. According to the passage, “above all nations is humanity” might mean ___________.A. not all nations have humanityB. humanity is as important as a nationC. humanity has no national boundariesD. all human beings should live in peacePassage FourThere is a measurable relation between how much a person learns and his attitude toward the subject to be learned. When faced with a difficult learning task, one path to success is to concentrate on the positive aspects of the subject matter. If a student has a boring teacher, one solution is to look for the positive aspects of completing the course, regardless of how boring the teacher happens to be. To accomplish this might require a private tutor or some independent reading, but with the right attitude, success is possible. Over-achievers – students who do better than their test scores show – usually have a positive interest toward learning. They may learn some things more slowly, and they may make more efforts, but, to compensate (补偿), they are often better at applying what they have learned. As long as they do not have emotional problems, they are successful. Under-achievers – those who function below their ability shown by test scored – often tend to allow a few negative factors to affect them. Because of their negative attitudes, they sometimes become unfairly critical of teachers. They allow themselves to get bored when it is not necessary. In short, their attitudes often cause them to learn less than over-achievers. If you learn to replace a negative attitude toward learning with something more positive, you are on the road to achieving almost any goal you desire. For example, if yourealize a personal computer with a word processor would improve your performance, but have anattitude that keeps telling you that a computer is difficult to operate, you tend to make all kinds of excuses. In short, you resist making full use of a terrific tool, simply because your negative attitude prevents you from learning.31. What does the author think a student should do if he has a boring teacher?A. Look for a new course.B. Be critical of the teacher.C. Complete the course with a good score.D. Have a right attitude toward the teacher.32. The writer thinks that over-achievers and under-achievers mainly differ in ___________.A. their test scoresB. their judgment of othersC. their attitudes toward learningD. their skills in using computers33. The underlined phrase function below their ability shown by test scores means the under-achievers _____________.A. often get low scores in testsB. do worse in actual learning than in testsC. usually do better in tests than the over-achieversD. are always slow in learning and have to make more efforts34. The example of the personal computer shows that ___________.A. finding excuses helps in learningB. to react negatively can be harmfulC. hard-working is the key to successD. making use of the computer is important35. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Attitudes play an important role in learning.B. Students should learn how to use personal computers.C. Teachers are not so important in the learning process.D. There are many differences between over-and under-achievers.Part III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on theANSWER SHEET.Passage OneScientists said they have found evidence of a giant planet far out in our solar system. In a statement, the California Institute of Technology —Caltech—said this planet travels a very strange “long and thin orbit in the distant solar system.”The discovery was made by two researchers at Caltech: Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown. They used mathematical modeling and computer simulations(模拟)to find the planet. So far, there have not been any direct observations of the planet.“My jaw hit the floor, ”said astronomer (宇航员)Mike Brown, the moment he realized there might be a ninth planet. The scientists said it would take this planet 10,000 to 20,000 years just to make one full orbit around the sun. The new planet, called “Pla,nheatsNainme as”s about 10 times the sizeof Earth. If they are right, the newly found planet would be the ninth planet in our solar system. Pluto(冥王星)had been called the ninth planet until 2006, when it was renamed adwarf planet. ”Actual confirmation of a ninth planet would be very big news. “This would be a real ninth planet,” Brown said in the statement. “There have only been two true planets discovered since ancient times, and this would be a third. It's a pretty substantial chunk of our solar system that's still out there to be found, which is pretty exciting. ”While they did not get a picture of “Planet Nine ye”t,the scientists say they are using the biggest—and best—telescopes on Earth to try to find “Planet Nine. The”y are also working on improving their computer simulations. They want to find out more about “Planet Nine o'rbsit”, and its impact on the outer part of our solar system.16. The newly-found planet _______ .A. moves around the SunB. was discovered by two astronomersC. travels a round orbitD. is far away from our solar system17. The possibility of finding a ninth planet made Mike Brown ______ .A. confusedB. frightenedC. satisfiedD. surprised18. According to the scientists, ______A. the planet is ten times larger than the EarthB. it takes the planet less than 10,000 years to make a full orbitC. Pluto was once thought to be the ninth planet in the solar systemD. Pluto was given a new name after it was discovered in 200619. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______ .A. there is no actual confirmation about the ninth planetB. no true planets were discovered in ancient timesC. scientists have found three planets in modern timesD. the ninth planet is the only one discovered since ancient times20. To find “Planet Nine”, scientists are using all the following EXCEPT _____ .A. mathematical modelingB. computer simulationsC. advanced telescopesD. large spacecraftsPassage Two“ Helicopterparenting d”escribes a style of raising children where parents are over- protective and do too much. The term was used for the first time in the late 1960s. It describes parents who hover (悬停)over their kids like a helicopter. Today, modern technology allows these helicopter parents to hover from even far away. They can give their children directions at any moment from anywhere.Author Julie Lythcott-Haims wrote a book titled How to Raise an Adull . In her book, she gives readers a closer look at this parenting style.“ Over-parenting ”, she says, “ comes in three types: the first is the over-protective parents who think the world is scary and unsafe and unpredictable. And therefore, I must protect and prevent. The second type is the over-directive type —the parent who says, I know best what leads to success and you will do as I say. You 'll study these topics, do these activies and you will be highly achieving at all of it. The third type is the concierge (看门人)—the parent who just wants to make life smoother —from waking their kid up, to keeping track of their deadlines,to making sure they haven't forgotten anything, to even doing the homework for the kid.Julie Lythcott-Haims says she experienced the effects of helicopter parenting firsthand when she worked as dean of first-year students at Stanford University. The incoming students were very smart and accomplished on paper. But many were unable to take care of themselves.“They were turning to parents constantly for guidance, for problem solving, to have them make the choice about something. ” Often times, Lythcott-Haims had to remind those parentsthat their kids were old enough to take care of themselves.21. The term “ helicopter parenting ” _________ .A. describes parents who give children directions in the airB. was probably invented in the late nineteenth centuryC. gains more meaning as modern technology developsD. refers to parents who concern too much about kids22. According to Lythcott-Haims, over-parenting has all the following features EXCEPT ______A. over-directiveB. over-dependentC. over-preventiveD. over-protective23. It can be inferred that a concierge mother will ______ .A. regard the world as very dangerousB. allow children to do whatever they likeC. keep a close eye on the kid 's assignmentD. let the kid alone when he falls on the ground24. In Julie 's eyes, the first-year students at Stanford University are _________ .A. very clever in studyingB. really good at problem-solvingC. unable to communicate with teachersD. having problems making friends25. Lythcott-Haims ' attitude towards helicopter parenting is ________ .A. supportiveB. negativeC. uninterestedD. unclearPassage ThreeI recently had the opportunity to go to my first ever music festival. We Love Green was held over a weekend in Parc de Bagatelle, Paris. While like most music festivals, it boasted an impressive and diverse music, there was something extra special about this one. You see, thiswas a green festival! From the food to the stalls (货摊), everything was as environmentally friendly as possible. Not only was the majority of the furniture/stalls/toilet rooms hand-made from wood, the festival was powered by solar energy. Guests were invited to dispose of rubbish in specially labeled dustbins which, after the festival, were sorted so all of the waste could be recycled appropriately. Fresh water was made available freely to everyone so thatattendants were not encouraged to buy drinks in plastic bottles which would have created a lot of waste.I found the experience incredibly fun but also really interesting. Having never been to a music festival before, I was unsure of what to expect. However, I was happy to find myself sitting in a field eating a healthy, home-made fruit cake while drinking organic fruit juice. There were many stalls, art installations, and different areas, meaning there was something there for everyone, from small children to the elderly! This seems like such a great idea, making something very fun and interesting, that does not cause great damage to the environment. I have since discovered that there are more events similar to this across the globe, which is great! I can 'imt agine how much waste has been produced from such public events as festivals across the years before we realised just how bad they were for the environment!26. Which of the following can be the title of the passage?A. We Love GreenB. We Love EnvironmentC. Music FestivalsD. A Unique Public Event27. What is special about the music festival?A. The purpose of this passage is to ______ .A. raise funds for environment protectionB. highlight that being green can be funC. encourage people to go to music festivalsD. introduce the author's favourite musiciansPassage FourChokwe Selassie is on a mission to help drivers avoid potholes (路面坑洞). The eighthgrader got his inspiration on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Through the call system, citizens dial 311 to report non-emergency problems —which include potholes. As Chokwe and his friends worked on the app, they also went street by street throughout the city. They determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test it.Although the app isn 'ytet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve it. The app remains limited to 10 streets in Jackson, but he hopes to add more, so that it includes every street in the city. Thetwo men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a smallsteel ball to find out if there are any ocean currents or signs of life.It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface indaylight, and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it.The divers began preparations early in the morning and soon afterwards, when allwas ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water. The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layersof water. In time, the temperature dropped to freezing point. They kept in touch with the mothership by telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3, 000 feet, the telephone stoppedworking and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hourslater at 30, 000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud, cracking noise: eventhe smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though,it was only one of the outer windowsthat had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of“dust”made up of small dead sea-creatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and themen were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quiteuntroubled by the greatwater-pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them madethe water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint but clearvoices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutesthe men began their journey up arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none theworse for their experience.16.The purpose of the divers ’journey to the deepest point on the earth was to find__________.A.if there are water currents and life in the great depthsB.if people can stand the severe cold in the great depthsC.if there are steps in the great depthsD.if the telephone works well in the great depths17.The divers set out early in the morning so that __________.A.they could return to the surface during the dayB.they could see at the bottom of the oceanC.they could avoid the cold at nightD.they could stay long at the bottom18.Which of the statements is true?A.The ocean water temperature decreases steadily with the depth.B.There are steps on the way to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.C.There are steps between the water layers of different temperatures.D.The water layers of different temperatures made the divers feel as if theywere going down steps.19.As the divers went down to the ocean floor, the telephone __________.A.kept working all the timeB.stopped working at a depth of 3, 000 feet and began working again afterthey reached the bottomC.stopped working at a depth of 3, 000 feet and began working again at 30, 000 feetD.stopped working at a depth of 3, 000 feet and began working again whenthey returned t the same depth20.On the ocean floor, the divers found that __________.A.there was no life but some small dead sea-creaturesB.fish were swimming as freely as they do near the surfaceC.fish were not swimming freely in the dark waterD.fish were not swimming freely under the high water-pressurePassage TwoThere are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information inlong-term memory can be recalled at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. In contrast, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the informationover and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.Henning studied how students who are leaning English as a second languageremember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students. To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question testto see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjectshad to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions hadfour choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetterare four words that sound a like. Some of the questions had four choices that havethe same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakeson words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes onwords that have the same meaning. Henning ’s results suggest that beginning students hold thesound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words intheir short-term memory.21. Like many other religious holidays, though, Easter has incorporated many traditions from pagan beliefs andpre-Christian rites of seasonalregeneration. The word Easter has Indo-European roots and means “dawn”. This is a direct reference to the pagan goddess of dawn and new life. The egg, a symbol of Easter,is a sign of fertility which reflects ancient spring renewal rites and beliefs that have been absorbed into the Christian tradition. Even the Easter bunny who brings the eggs was the escort of the Germanic goddess Ostara, who had a holiday namedafter her that fell on the vernal equinox. This serves to underscore the pagan elements that still remain a part of this quintessential Christian holy day.In the United States, Easter is celebrated in several ways. On Easter morning children usually begin their day by looking for Easter eggs that the Easter bunnyhas hidden for them. Of course, most children know that the eggs were hidden by their parents, not the Easter bunny. In fact, many children help their parentscolor the Easter eggs, knowing that soon they will be eating them as a snack on Easter day. Some cities have Easter egg hunts at the local parks.Since Easter is always celebrated on Sunday, many people attend “Sunrise services”at their local church. In fact, more people go to church on Easter Sunday than at any other time of the year. Sunrise services begin very early in the morning, usually right about the same time as when thesun begins to rise, and last until almost noon. After church families gather and have a big holiday feast.Easter also marks the coming of spring. Although officially invented by a Hungarian, Emanuel Herrmann, 1869, the idea of illustrated cards was taken up with mostenthusiasm in Victorian Britain, joining Gothic architecture and landscape gardening as fields in which the country excelled. “If the British postcard did become extinct we would lose for ever something of great importance to thenation, ”said Chris Mottershead of Thomson Holiday, which commissioned the poll Marie Angelou of Sussex University, who has investigated the importance of sending and receiving postcards, backed him. “Postcards are nothing like phone calls, instant texting and direct photo shots via mobile, ”she said. “All these are useful, practical devices, but postcards offersomething else, something additional that is not mundane and simply functional, but imaginative and personal. They can evoke the real atmosphere of our holiday ina way that nothing else can do. They ’re also for more than a moment –with somepeople adding them to collections built up overyears and years.”Postcard-collecting, or deltiology, is third only to coins andstamps in Britain ’s allied tradition of collecting things. One Friday afternoon he was riding along the track towards the Henderson farm. He was looking for a prize bull which had escaped from the Borrogee paddock. He reached the hills and saw at once that he could not go further. There had been a fire in the forest which had gone out. But the air was still full of smoke and fallen trees had blocked the track. Jack was just going to turn back when he saw something moving in the smoke. He waited. It was a girl on a horse, and she was riding towards him. “There’s a badly burnt man on the farm,” the girl shouted. “He saved my life. Please help me to save him.”The girl was Cathy Henderson. She had been on horseback for two hours. She had to jump over fallen trees that were still burning. Her pony had fallen with her twice. She was thirsty and almost dead from want of sleep. But she rode back to the farm with Jack immediately.Joe Brook was unconscious when they reached him. They lifted him onto Jack’s horse. The ride back to Borrogee was terrible. Cathy was so tired that Jack had to tie her to her pony. The pony was tired too, but its courage was astonishing. It followed Jack right to Borrogee Hospital. Nobody saw them arrive because it was night. “I’ve never seen a horse like that pony,” Jack said. Dr. Aiken studied a number of couples who had been married for at least twenty-five years. Each couple provided four photographs—one photo of each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo of each partner twenty-five or more years later. All background was cut from the photos to remove any clues. The photos were then displayed in groups: a random grouping of the persons at the time of their marriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took photographs later. Some testees were asked to pick out the partners. They failed totally with the first group. Their judgements were no better than chance. But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage, the testees were quite successful with the most happily-married couples.Dr. Aiken believes there are several reasons why couples grow alike. One reason has something to do with imitation. One person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowing it. He says human begins to imitate the expressions of the faces of their loved ones. “Another possible reason,” he says, “is the common experience of the couples.” There is a tendency for people who have the same life experience to change their faces in similar ways. For example, if a couple have suffered from a lot of sad experiences, their faces are likely to change in a similar way.21. Dr. Aiken cut the background from the photos for the purpose of __________.A. imitating the couples’ lifeB. grouping the couples againC. leaving no trace for the testeesD. giving the testees more chances22. The underlined sentence “Their judgements were no better than chance” implies that the testees __________.A. did a good job in making their choices.B. had difficulty in picking out the partnersC. had no chance to make the right judgementsD. did better with the first group than with the second23. The underlined word “imitate” (in Para. 2) has a similar meaning to __________.A. copyB. changeC. knowD. suffer24. From the passage we can draw the conclusion that ___________.A. couples who look alike can live longerB. most partners have been proved to grow alikeC. the influence between partners can be quite strongD. happily-married couples are often richer than others25. The main purpose of the passage is to ___________.A. explain why couples grow alikeB. tell how couples like each otherC. discuss the function of marriageD. describe the life of happily married couplesPassage ThreeThe three biggest lies in America are: (1) “The check is in the mail”, (2) “Of course I’ll respect you in the morning”, and (3) “It was a computer error.”Of these three little white lies, the worst is the third. It’s the only one that can never be true. Today, if a bank statement cheats you out of $ 900 that way, you know what the clerk is sure to say,” It was a computer error.” Nonsense. The computer is reporting nothing more than what the clerk typed into it.The most annoying case of all is when the computerized cashier in the grocery store shows that an item costs more than it actually does. If the innocent buyer points out the mistake, the checker, bagger, and manager all come together and offer the familiar explanation: “It was a compute error.”It wasn’t, of course that computerized cashier is really nothing more than an electric event. The eye reads the Universal Product Code—chat bar of black and white lines in a corner of the package—and then checks the code against a price list stored in memory. If the price list is right, you’ll be charged accurately.Grocery stores update the price list each day—that is, somebody sits at a keyboard and types in the prices. If the price they type in is too high, there are only two explanations: carelessness or dishonesty. But somehow “a computer error” is supposed to excuse everything. One reason we let people hide behind a computer is the common misperception that huge, modern computers are electric brain with “artificial intelligence.” At some point there might be a machine with intelligence but none exists today. The smartest computer on Earth right now is no more intelligent than your average pen. At this point in the development of computers, the only thing any machine can do is what a human has instructed it to do.26. Of the three lies, the one about computer is the worst because the computer itself __________.A. says nonsenseB. cheats customersC. cannot make the errorD. does not admit its error27. According to the author, a computerized cashier is really just ___________.A. a machine to count moneyB. a machine to receive moneyC. an instrument to print codesD. an instrument to read codes28. Grocery store price lists are updated by ____________.A. a computerB. a keyboardC. an employeeD. an electric brain29. The last paragraph of the passage implies that computers ____________.A. are very cleverB. never make mistakesC. have a good memoryD. are controlled by men30. Which of the following describes the main idea of the passage?A. Computers are stupid and inefficient.B. Computer errors are due to its dishonesty.C. Computers help stores update the price list.D. Computer errors are actually human errors.Passage FourI came across an old country guidebook the other day. It listed all the tradesmen in each village, and it was impressive to see the past variety of services which were available on one’s own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside. Nowadays a traveler in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the villagers or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. On the surface, there has been a decline of village commerce, but its power is still remarkable. Our local grocer’s shop, for example, is actually expanding in spite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local news while doing their shopping, instead of queuing up at a supermarket. And the grocer knows well that personal service has a considerable cash value. His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing. The richer customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods are on their doorsteps within an hour. They have only to hint at a fancy for some commodity outside the usual stock and the grocer, a red faced-figure, instantly obtains it for them.31. Nowadays the commercial services in the village are ____________.A. still very activeB. quickly decliningC. unable to flourishD. personal to visitors32. The local grocer’s shop is expanding because _____________.A. the competition there is weakB. it is a place for women to chatC. it provides good personal serviceD. the goods there are more valuable33. Which of the following is true about the supermarkets?A. Prices there are much higherB. Customers often have to queue up.C. Customers can order by telephone.D. Their personal services are satisfactory.34. How do the village grocer’s assistants feel about giving extra service?A. They don’t think it a trouble.B. They don’t think it worthwhile.C. They don’t consider it a good deal.D. They don’t consider it a pleasant experience.35. Soon thousands of Cherokeewere able to read and write in their own language.Sequoyah's work did not end there, however. In fact, when we go about our everyday lives itis virtually impossible to avoid it. If you take a bus to school, there will bea camera on it. When you pop out to the supermarket to buy some bread, a camerawill be watching you walk around the shop. If you look up, you'll see camerason many street corners, at bus stops, on trains and even in some publictoilets. We seem to have developed an obsession (迷恋) with them!In 2013, an article published in The Guardian (a British newspaper)stated that there was 1 camera for every 11 people in Britain. There are estimatedto be around 6 million CCTV cameras across Britain - now that's a lot ofcameras! Thanks to our apparent love of CCTV, Britain has been nicknamed the"surveillance state".CCTV is a vital tool for the police and can help solve crimes - anotable example would be the James Bulger case from 1993. CCTV images meantthat the two boys who committed the crime were caught and prosecuted. However,CCTV does not always have all the answers. Sometimes the images aren't clearenough to identify people; often, criminals obscure their faces to avoid beingcaught. Recently, some talking CCTV cameras have been installed in the UK.These react to movement, and warn criminals that their photo has been taken. In my opinion, CCTV has gone too far. As a nation, we rely on it fartoo much. At what point did we decide to replace police officers withtechnology? Many people claim to feel safer as a result of CCTV; if more policewere around I'm sure they'd feel just as safe! Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheer.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Jim Thorpe was a Native American. He was born in 1888 in an Indian Territory(印弟安人保护区)that is now Oklahoma. Like most Native American children then, he liked to fish, hunt, swim, and play games outdoors.(76)He was healthy and strong, but he had very little formal education. In 1950, Jim Thorpe was named the greatest American football player. He was also an Olympic gold medal winner. But Thorpe had many tragedies in his life.Jim had a twin brother who died when he was nine years old. By the time he was 16, his mother and father were also dead. Jim then went to a special school in Pennsylvania for Native American children. There, he learned to read and write and also began to play sports. Jim was poor, so he left school for two years to earn some money. During this time, he played on a baseball team.(77)The team paid him $15 a week. Soon he returned to school to complete his education. Jim was a star athlete(运动员)in several sports, including baseball, running, and football. He won many awards for his athletic ability, mainly for football. In many games, he scored all or most of the points for his team.In 1912, when Jim Thorpe was 24 years old, he became part of the U.S. Olympic team. He competed in two very difficult events: the pentathlon and the decathlon. Both require greatability and strength. The pentathlon has five track and field events, including the long jump and the 1,500-meter race. The decathlon has ten track and field events, with running, jumping, and throwing contests.People thought it was impossible for an athlete to compete in both the pentathlon and the decathlon. So everyone was surprised when Thorpe won gold medals in both events. When the King of Sweden presented Thorpe with his two gold medals, he said, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.” Thorpe was a simple and honest man. He just answered, "Thanks, King."1. From the passage we learn that Jim Thorpe was born in ____.A. IndiaB. PennsylvaniaC. OklahomaD. Sweden2. According to the passage, most American Indian children loved all the following EXCEPT____.A. fishingB. huntingC. swimmingD. singing3. All one has to do is walk by almost any nice gym and notice all the healthy, sweating, "skinny" members. Sometimes they stare at those of us who are, well, zaftig. It is easy to see the judgment behind their eyes. Who wants to put up with that? Many people are self-conscious of their bodies and feel isolated when joining workout classes or while exercising, especially if they are larger than most of the others in the group. Now the fitness industry is finally paying attention. Popular gyms are catering(迎合)to overweight and weight conscious customers by dedicating areas where the "skinny" people are not allowed. There are even gyms or programs that require members to be at least 50 pounds overweight to participate.Trainers recommend functional fitness as a practical goal, rather than six-pack abs(六块腹肌). (78)They often use text messages to stay in touch with customers.Often at these specialized gyms, the trainers are overweight themselves, or working on their own weight goals, and this can help those people with anxiety caused by poor body image. The equipment has been designed for use by larger people. Wider seats, more cushioning, no mirrors, and tinted(有色的)windows for privacy, are all important changes.(79) Hopefully these types of gyms will successfully grow in numbers in the future. The idea is a very simple and potentially popular one. If it helps those of us who are bigger exercise more and improve our fitness level, it's a step in the right direction.6. The word zaftig in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ____.A. fatB. healthyC. friendlyD. polite7. We can infer from the first two paragraphs that ____.A. most large gym chains really don't want members to show up frequentlyB. overweight people are often frustrated and pushed away by traditional gym industryC. regular gyms don't accept overweight people to participate in their programsD. overweight people have to pay extra to work out in a gym8. That’s not to say that every nation carries the same menu items: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism(沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to theirnational food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." The next year, a bomb exploded in a French McDonald’s, killing a 27-year-old employee. The measure is part of a larger package of laws aimed at reducing tobacco use.If Governor Jerry Brown signs the bill, California will become the second state, after Hawaii,to raise the age limit for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products; More than 100 cities in the U.S.,including New York and Boston; have already raised the age limit..A week ago,the California Assembly approved the measure, which----in addition to raising the age limit, treats electronic cigarettes the same as tobacco products, expands smoke-free areas, increases smoking bans and allows counties to collect higher taxes on cigarettes than the 87-cent per pack state tax. The Assembly's vote came a few days after the city of San Francisco increased the age to buy tobacco products to 21.California lawmakers passed the bill despite lobbying (游说)from tobacco interests. The measure also faced opposition from many Republicans, who said the state should not be involved in policing people's personal choices. "I don't smoke.I don't encourage my children to," said Republican Assemblyman Donald Wagner. "But they're adults, and it's our job to treat our citizens as adults."But supporters of the bill say raising the age to 21 moves legally purchased tobacco that much farther from younger kids. "This will save the medical system millions of dollars," said Democratic Assemblyman Jim Wood.(78) "It will save thousands of lives." A 2015 study by the Institute of Medicine "found that if the minimum legal age to buy tobacco were raised to 21 nationwide, tobacco use would drop by 12 percent by the time today's teens reached adulthood. In addition, there would be 223,000 fewer premature (过早的) deaths and 50,000 fewer deaths from lung cancer."6. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. "I decided I was going to do something about the pothole problem in my city," Chokwe says. His solution: an APP (手机应用)that warns drivers when there is a pothole ahead.Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. "When the app detects a pothole,it is highlighted (突出显示)in red," Chokwe says. "And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you." Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes they encounter, and to look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them; The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson. "It works by using the city's 311 call system, so it uses information already stored in a database," Chokwe says.(79) Through the call system, citizens dial 3-1-1 to report non-emergency problems------which include potholes. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide 0,7 the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:As the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary (周年纪念), President Barack Obama has announced the establishment of one new national monument, and the expansion (扩大) of another. In Maine, more than 87,500 acres of forest will become government-protected parkland for the first time. In Hawaii, a national monument created by President George W. Bush in 2006 will expand to about 582,578 square miles, four times its current size.Obama has now created or enlarged 26 national monuments during his presidency. As a result, his administration says, Obama has protected more of the nation's land than any other president has. But some residents and officials, in both Maine and Hawaii, object to the plans. (76) They say their local economies depend on the use of these areas. In establishing this monument, Obama took the side of conservationists (自然资源保护者) who want laws to protect wild lands. Creating a national park usually requires the approval of Congress. But a 1906 federal law allows the president to establish national monuments on his own.The land's new status as a monument means that mining and drilling operations are forbidden there. (77) It may also severely limit activities such aslogging, road-building, and hunting. Some of Maine's politicians who want to protect the state's logging industries say Obama should not have acted alone. They say Washington should not tell the states how to use their land, especially when people's jobs are at stake. Maine politician Susan Collins said the president should have listened to Maine lawmakers and residents, as well as to the U.S. Congress, before making his decision. However, those who support the president's decision say the establishment of the new monument will lead to new jobs through tourism.1. Contemporaries believe that the odd carvings (雕刻) above the Queen Street entrance were actually caricatures (漫画) of councilors at the time.Lennox even included himself in the caricatures, on the west side of the central arch (拱门), and left a strange signature in the stonework of the link portions of the building. The third City Hall was originally used as councilors' offices and legal offices, but it is used only as a courthouse today. When the fourth City Hall (the one we know today) was declared open in 1965, Old City Hall was threatened to be pulled down. It was saved by a group of people called the "Friends of Old City Hall. "The clock tower stands parallel with the middle of Bay Street, rather than with the center of the building. For each of them there are four choices markedA ,B ,C and D. You should decideon the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Some psychologists(心理学家) maintain that mental acts such as thinking are not performedin the brain alone, but that one' s muscles also participate. (76) It may be said that we think withour muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your earsbut with your whole body. Few people can listen to music without moving their body or, more specifically, some part of their body. Often when one listens to a symphonic concert on the radio, he is attracted to direct the orchestra (乐队) even though he knows there is a good conductor on the job.Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all possible enjoyment from music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener "feels" himself into the music with more or less noticeable motions of his body.( 77 ) The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process of thinking in the sameway, but this participation is less obvious because it is less noticeable.1. Some psychologists think that thinking isA. not a mental processB. more of a physical process than a mental actionC. a process that involves our entire bodiesD. a process that involves the muscles as well as the brain2. The process of thinking and that of listening to music are similar in thatA. both are mental actsB. muscles participate in both processesC. both processes are performed by the entire bodyD. we derive equal enjoyment from them3. Few people are able to listen to familiar music withoutA. moving some part of their bodyB. stopping what they are doing to listenC. directing the orchestra playing itD. wishing that they could conduct music properly4. The listener's way of "feeling" the music isA. the unnoticed motion of his musclesB. "participating" in the performanceC. bending an ear to the musicD. being the conductor of the orchestra5. According to the passage, muscle participation in the process of thinking isA. deliberateB. ApparentC. indistinctD. impressivePassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:It is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. (78) The meanings of. thousands of everyday perceptions , the bases for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits andskills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It includesnot only "remembering" things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involving any change inthe way an animal typically behaves. (79)Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain be-cause he has sniffed something suspicious in the grain pile. Memory is also involved when a six-year-old child learns to swing a baseball bat.Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting tocompare the memory-storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instant-access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 " words" --ready for instant use. An average U.S. teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information which the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight. The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings.A large part of a person' s memory is in terms of words and combinations of words.6. According to the passage, memory is considered to beA. the basis for decision making and problem solvingB. an ability to store experiences for future useC. an intelligence typically possessed by human beingsD. the data mainly consisting of words and combinations of words7. The comparison made between the memory capacity of a large computer and that of a human being shows thatA. the computer' s memory has a little bigger capacity than a teenager' sB. the computer' s memory capacity is much smaller that an adult human being' sC. the computer' s memory capacity is much smaller even than a teenager' sD. both A and B8. The whole passage implies thatA. only human beings have problem-solving intelligenceB. a person' s memory is different from a computer' s in every respectC. animals are able to solve only very simple problemsD. animals solve problems by instincts rather than intelligence9. The phrase "in terms of" in the last sentence can best be replaced byA. "in connection with"B. "expressed by"C. "consisting"D. "by means of"10. The topic of the passage is:A. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In the United States, it is important to be on time for an appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian(巴西的)university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10 a.m. Several arrived after 10:30 a.m. Two students came after 11 a.m. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students’ behavior. The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in university calls respectively. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react. If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student showed clearly lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian student would be 33 minutes late.In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. In contrast, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00; many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. Arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.11. The American professor studied the Brazilian students’ behavior because ________.A) he felt angry at the students’ rudenessB) he felt puzzled at the students’ being lateC) he wanted to collect data for his researchD) he wanted to make students come on time later12. What can we infer from the professor’s study of lateness in the informal situation?A) Neither Brazilian nor American students like to be late in social gatherings.B) American students will become impatient if their friend is ten minutes late.C) Being late in one culture may not be considered rude in another culture.D) Brazilian students will not come thirty-three minutes after the agreed time.14. From the last paragraph we know that in Brazil, ________.A) it is acceptable for professors to be late for classB) it is rude to keep a professor staying after classC) it is important to arrive at the appointed timeD) it is normal for students to leave during lectures15. They think their parents’ high expectations are burdens. But a recent survey found that they are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, Korea and the US, who also find their parents annoying. The parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than Chinese parents. 62% of Chinese fathers and 66% of Chinese mothers have high expectations of their children at high school age. They rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of four countries. Japanese mothers top the list with 76% having high expectations, while 70% of Korean fathers expect too much of their children. Japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly comparing them with other kids. The survey also found that Chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. They blame them less, and also receive less criticism than those from the other three countries. However, satisfaction doesn’t mean they are happy. Of the four countries, Chinese children are not the happiest at home. They get the least praise from their parents and they don’t feel able to express their unhappiness to them,Results from the survey show that in spite of different cultural backgrounds, generation gaps exist in many countries other than China. It’s even bigger elsewhere. It is said that Chinese parents are used to burying their feelings deep in their hearts, which makes their children not want to talkopenly with them. This survey shows that both parents and teenagers in China need to work on communicating and understanding each other.Besides their family life, students were also questioned about their opinions on themselves and others in the world. US students showed more “individuality,” with 88% agreeing that “people should follow their own interests instead of those of others”. Koreans were the next most independent, followed by the Chinese and Japanese.21. Soon you may be able to throw your wallet away and pay for things with a quick wave of your smart phone over an electronic scanner. In January, Starbucks announced that customers could start using their phones to buy coffee in 6,800 of its stores. This is the first pay-by-phone practice in the U.S., but we’re likely to see more wireless payment alternatives as something called near field communication (NFC) gets into America’s consumer electronics. Last December, some new smart phones which contain an NFC chip were introduced to the public.Already in use in parts of Asia and Europe, NFC allows shoppers to wave their phones a fewinches above a payment terminal —a contact-free system built for speed and convenience. But before NFC becomes widely adopted in the U.S., a few problems need to be worked out, like who will get to collect the profitable transaction fees. Although some credit card providers have been experimenting with wave-and-pay systems that use NFC-enabled credit cards, cell-phone service providers may try to muscle their way into the point-of-sale (POS) market. Three big cell-phone service providers have formed a joint venture that will go into operation over the next 15 months. Its goal is “to lead the U.S. payments industry from cards to mobile phones.”The other big NFC issue, apart from how payments will be processed, is security. For instance, what’s to stop a thief from digitally pickpocketing you? “We’re still not at the point where an attacker can just brush against you in a crowd and steal all the money out of your phone.” says Jimmy Shah, a mobile-security researcher. “Users may also be able to set transaction limits, perhaps requiring a password to be entered for larger purchases.”Are you still uneasy about this digital-wallet business? Keep in mind that if you lose your smart phone, it can be located on a map and remotely disabled. Plus, your phone can be password protected. Your wallet isn’t.26. Recently, a Chinese new law requires that all adults should regularly visit and take care of their parents. If they don't do so, they break the law. The new law, however, has given rise to a public debate on whether it is possible. Many people doubt whether the law is enforceable, because it does not clarify how often people have to visit their parents. In addition, working people who live far away from their parents will find it difficult to take leave to go home regularly. Even so, some scholars have praised the law because it is aimed at arousing people's awareness of loving the elderly and reminding them to always keep their obligations in mind and visit their parents frequently.Part V Writing(30 minutes) Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Online Learning or Offline Learning.
