Passage 1.

Television for Entertainment

In recent years television has become the most popular form(形式) of entertainment. But television, like other things, has both advantages and disadvantages.

For a family of four,it is more convenient and cheaper to sit comfortably at home in front of a TV.They don't have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre(剧院) or the cinema. They only need to press buttons to switch(换台) from one channel to another. From TV,people can not only get various information(信息) that you never know before.,but also enjoy your favourite programmes. It is a good way for us to get a lot of pleasure.

However, every coin has two sides. Some people spend a lot of time watching TV every day.It affects their work and study.Besides, some programs such as violence films have a very bad

influence(影响) on children.Children will copy the bad behaviours(行为,表现) of characters in the film.

In general(总的来说),TV is a good thing. It can help you relax and make your life colourful. But you need to know how to make good use of it.

Passage 2

Recreations

Recreation is an important part of people's life. For example, after hours of attentive(专注的) study, students will feel like having a football game to relax themselves.Workers may find it very relaxing to sit in front of a TV set for one or two hours when they come back from a day's tiring (累人的)work.Recreation is also a pleasant way for retired(退休的) people to pass their job-free time.Everywhere you go,you will find that people do recreational(消遣的) activities of one kind or another.

Generally speaking(一般来说),there are two kinds of recreations:physical(体力的) activities and intellectual activities.Physical activities help us keep fit and develop team spirit(团队精

神).Basketball is a good example.Intellectual activities, such as playing chess and reading novels, can train our brain(训练思维、大脑).

In my opinion, there should be a balance between the two forms of activities.Because physical activities are necessary for good health while intellectual activities are beneficial to mind. There fore,in order to make his life enjoyable and colorful, one should go in for both kinds of pastimes.

Passage 3 Additional reading(辅助读物)

Study and Recreation

Recreational activities and study do not contradict (互相矛盾)each other; in fact, they complement (互相补充)each other. As the saying(谚语)goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." A life filled with study and work leads you nowhere, for you would get tired and bored with your daily routine (例行的,乏味的)work. On the other hand, proper (适当的)recreation would relieve the tension(紧张) and discomfort(不适) of our dull(单调的)life because it gives you various ways to let out your unhappy emotions(情感).

What I usually do to relax after school is jogging and seeing movies. Usually I don't spare(抽出) t ime for exercise, but I value (看重)the PE class at school. Jogging some time along the playground certainly relieves the day's pressure. On weekends, I'll watch the morning movie for enjoyment. After that I feel energetic(精力充沛) again for another week's work or study.

In a word,I strongly(强烈地) suggest students and workers have regular (定期的)recreations to give our body and mind(身心) a break.Only in this way you will do your work or study effectively.
