Introduction

Friends is an American sitcom created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, which aired on NBC from September 22, 1994 to May 6, 2004. The TV series revolves around a group of friends in the borough of Manhattan, New Y ork City. It was produced by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television. The original executive producers were Crane, Kauffman and Kevin S. Bright, with numerous others being promoted in later seasons.

Kauffman and Crane began developing Friends under the title Insomnia Cafe in November 1993. They presented the idea to Bright, with whom they had previously worked, and together they pitched a seven-page treatment of the series to NBC. After several script rewrites and changes, including a second title change to Friends Like Us, the series was finally named Friends and premiered on NBC?s coveted Thursday 8:30 pm timeslot. Filming for the series took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California in front of a live studio audience. After ten seasons on the network, the series finale was promoted by NBC, and viewing parties were organized around the U.S. The series finale (the 236th episode), airing on May 6, 2004, was watched by 52.5 million American viewers, making it the fourth most-watched series finale in television history and the most watched episode of the decade.

Friends received positive reviews throughout most of its run, becoming one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. The series won many awards and was nominated for 63 Primetime Emmy Awards. The series, an instant hit from its debut, was also very successful in the ratings, consistently ranking in the top ten in the final primetime ratings. It is now often regarded by critics to be one of the finest shows in television history. The series made a large cultural impact, which continues today. The Central Perk coffee house that was featured prominently in the series has inspired various imitations throughout the world. The series continues in syndication worldwide. All 10 seasons are available on DVD. The spin-off series Joey was created to follow up with the series after the finale.

There are not many papers analyzing the Sino-American cultures in Friends, the only few study the kinship, friendship, love among six characters and some everyday life details. The author of this paper thinks that it is necessary to research it, it can on only make us understanding more about American culture, but as well recognize the cultural differences. Thereby, we can cope with the cultural problems more leisurely, communicate more smoothly, and remove cultural barriers more easily.

1 Introduction to Friends

1.1 The Outline of Friends

1.1.1 Characters

Rachel Green - a popular schoolgirl of the past, is now a spoiled brat living off her fathers finance. In an attempt to start a new life after running out on her wedding, she shares an apartment with an old best friend Monica Gellar, and eventually befriends the other 4 and Monica?s older brother, Ross.

Phoebe Buffay - brought up as a fatherless child, Phoebe is a ditzy yet loveable hippy, who has become a personal masseuse. Despite liking her profession, her dream is to become a star in the music industry and bases her songs on her life experiences. The other 5 friends secretly believe that Phoebe will never make it, but still encourage her to write. Phoebe often performs at the …Centra l Perk?coffee house, and strongly believes in herself.

Monica Gellar - a compulsive neat freak, who has trouble with her love life. Monica was teased when she was in high school for being overweight. However, now a head-chef at a top restaurant in Manhattan, she has lost all her excessive weight, and just wants to start a family with …the right guy? to complete a happy life.

Ross Gellar - older Brother of Monica, he has always had strong love feelings for Rachel. A successful professor of science leads him to be often teased by the other 5 friends about his profession. Ross has experienced many misfortunes in life,

2

including 3 divorces and bringing up a child with his lesbian ex-wife. Ross now is devoted to finding a girl to settle down with, without a divorce, and makes it his personal goal to share happiness with Rachel.

Chandler Bing - a financial secure data processor, who relies on humor as a defense mechanism. Despite being rich, the other 5 have no idea what his profession is, and Chandler is a wimpy, average looking cigarette addict, who has never had a serious relationship. Will he ever get it, and is she just round the corner from him?

Joey Tribiani - Despite being close to all the friends, he is especially open with Chandler, who his also his roommate. Joey is a small time actor, who desperately wants fame and fortune, and Chandler has high hopes of Joey, so helps Joey with money for acting lessons and professional photographs. Despite being a relatively bad actor, Joey is an adorable, sensitive guy, who is very successful with women, but needs to become famous and rich to complete his successful life.

1.1.2 Storylines and Format

The first season introduces the six main characters: Rachel Green, Monica Geller, Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing and Ross Geller. Rachel, who left her fiancéat the altar on her wedding day, has come to New Y ork and ends up living with Monica. At first she works as a waitress in a cafe, later she gets a job in Bloomingdate finally. It establishes early on in the season that Ross has been infatuated with Rachel since the two characters attended high school. Several episodes revolve around his attempts to tell her how he feels. Then Rachel finds she loves him, too. But because Rachel?s self-willed and Ross?s parsimonious, they are on and off, for over ten years. Joey, a struggling actor, gets a part in a fictionalized version of the soap opera Days of our Lives in the second season, but he loses the part soon after when he angers the writers by saying in an interview that he writes many of his own lines. Richard, a friend of Monica and Ross? parents who is recently divorced and with grown children, is 21 years older than Monica but despite this they date for the second half of the season. In the season finale, they end the relationship when they realize that he does not want any more children and she does.

3

Phoebe, established as having no family except for an identical twin sister, becomes acquainted with her half-brother and in the finale discovers her birth mother she never knew she had. She becomes a surrogate mother to the children of her brother and his wife. Ross begins dating an English woman called Emily and determines to get married. Rachel attends the wedding at the last minute, intending to tell Ross that she still loves him, but decides not to. Things are thrown into chaos when Ross replaces Emily?s name with Rachel?s while saying his vows. Then they got divorced.

Phoebe starts a relationship with Gary, a police officer she meets after finding his badge. Although leery of moving in with Gary, she eventually relents. The relationship ends with a bang, literally, when Gary shoots a bird outside of their apartment. Monica and Chandler?s relationship becomes public and on a trip to Las V egas, they decide to get married. On a cliffhanger, Ross and Rachel drunkenly stumble out of the wedding chapel after their marriage is established. Although Ross is reluctant to do so, the two get a divorce (Ross?s third) after failing to get an annulment. Monica and Chandler decide just to move into her apartment together and Rachel moves in with Phoebe. Ross gets a job lecturing at New Y ork University. Because Phoebe and Rachel?s apartment catches on fire, thus it causes Rachel to move with Joey and Phoebe with Chandler and Monica. In the final episodes, Chandler decides to propose to Monica.

Joey?s television series is cancelled but he is offered his old job back on Days of our Lives in Season Seven. Phoebe?s apartment is fixed but due to the way th e apartment has been rebuilt, Rachel stays with Joey.

The eighth season?s first episodes follow a “Who?s the father?”format, the father of Rachel?s baby-Emma is Ross. At the same time Joey begins to develop romantic feelings for roommate Rachel and when Joey?s feelings are revealed things become awkward for the two. Eventually their friendship returns to its status quo.

Monica and Chandler, inspired by Ross and Rachel, decide to conceive a child of their own in ninth season. They seek medical advice after several episodes of trying

4

for a baby, and discover that both of them are physically unable to conceive. Even though Joey?s attracted to Charlie, she finds herself eventually becoming attracted to Ross, who is more her intellectual equal. Charlie decides to return to Benjamin Hobart , her old flame, and from whom Ross was trying to obtain a research grant.

Monica and Chandler decide to adopt a child, and meet Erica, a birth mother from Ohio. Erica gives birth to twins in the series finale. Phoebe and Mike get married towards the end of the season and Rachel takes a job based in Paris. Ross declares his love for her and they resume their relationship. in the season finale, while Monica and Chandler move out of their apartment into the suburbs. Joey is upset that everything is changing. Rachel still gets on the plane even with Ross? confessions, but later appears at his apartment door admitting she loves him too. In the series finale, at the end, a tearful Rachel says …Shall we go get some coffee?? to which Ch andler responds, Sure. Where? (Wild, 2004: 67).

1.2 Impact of Friends

The series was nominated for 63 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning six. Aniston and Kudrow are the only main cast members to win an Emmy, while Cox is the only actor not to be nominated. The series won the 2002 Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, with nominations in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2003. The series also won an American Comedy Award, one GLAAD Media Award, one Golden Globe Award, three Logie Awards, six People?s Choice Awards, one Satellite Award, and one Screen Actors Guild Award.

Friends, consistently ranks within the top ten of the final television ratings in US. “Rank”refers to how well Friends rated compared to other television series which aired during primetime hours of the corresponding television season. The television season tends to begin in September, and ends during the May of the following year, which coincides with the completion of May sweeps. “Viewers” refers to the average number of viewers for all original episodes, broadcast during the television season in the series? regular timeslot. “Rank”is shown in relation to the total number of series airing on the then-six major English-language networks in a

5

given season. The “season premiere”is the date that the first episode of the season aired, and the “season finale”is the date that the final episode of the season aired. So far it has been the last sitcom to reach the No. 1 spot on television, as its successors were CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and American Idol.

Setting of Central Perk at Warner Bros. Studios, although the producers thought of Friends as “only a TV show”, numerous psychologists investigated the cultural impact of Friends during the series? run. Aniston?s hairstyle was nicknamed “The Rachel”, and copied around the world. Joey?s catchphrase, “How you doing?” became a popular part of Western English slang, often used as a pick-up line or when greeting friends. The series also impacted the English language, according to a study by a linguistics professor at the University of Toronto. The professor found that the characters used the word “so” to modify adjectives more often than other intensifiers, such as “very”and “really”. Although the preference had already made its way into the American vernacular, usage on the series may have accelerated the change. Following the September 11 attacks, ratings increased 17% over the previous season.

The Central Perk coffee house, one of the principal settings of the series, has inspired various imitations worldwide. In 2006, Iranian businessman Mojtaba Asadian started a Central Perk franchise, registering the name in 32 countries. The decor of the coffee houses is inspired by Friends, featuring replica couches, counters, neon signage and bricks. The coffee houses also contain paintings of the various characters from the series, and televisions playing Friends? episodes. James Michael Tyler, who plays the Central Perk manager in the series, Gunther, attended the grand opening of the Dubai cafe, where he worked as a waiter. Central Perk was rebuilt as part of a museum exhibit at Warner Bros. Studios, and was shown on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2008. Jennifer Aniston revisited the set for the first time since the series finale in 2004. From September 24 to October 7, 2009, a Central Perk replica was based at Broadwick Street, Soho, London. The coffee house sold real coffee to customers and featured a display of Friends memorabillia and props, such as the Geller Cup from the season t hree episode “The One with the Football”. In 2009, a

6

g “Smelly Cat”became a popular internet meme. In Beijing, business owner Du Xin opened a coffee shop named Central Perk, based on the coffee house in Friends.

Readers of TV Guide voted the cast of Friends their Best Comedy cast of all time, ranking at 29% of the votes, beating Seinfeld, which registered 18%.

2 The Sino-American Cultural Differences in Friends 2.1 Religious Belief

2.1.1 Main Religions and Religious Freedom

Both China and America are multi-religious countries; both the two governments declare the freedom of the religion belief. However, some distinction still exists.

The main religions in China are Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity and so on. On July 26th, 2010, Chine se Religion?s actuality and the tendency----the 7th religious social science?s annual meeting was held in Renmin University of China. According to the Investigation on Chinese Religious Situation which is published by the Center of the Study of Religion and Chinese Societyof Purdue University in 2010, 85% of the survey respondents have some religion beliefs or attend some religious activities, only 15% of them are the absolute atheist. And 18% of them identify themselves as Buddhist(Putnam, 2010: 89).

China?s Constitution provides that Chinese citizens may freely choose and express their beliefs and make clear their religious affiliations. But the Chinese government believes in atheism

Meanwhile, the main religions in American are Protestantism, Catholicism. 51% of the American citizens are Protestants, 25% of them are Catholics. The others are Buddhists, Hindus, Moslems, Jews. Ross is Jew, he tells his son about the Hanukkah?s story in the Episode 10, Season 7. But Ben is more interested in the Sant a Claus and the reindeer. It indicates that the belief of minority descendant is changing

7

(Qu, 2006: 91).

The separation of church and state is a legal and political principle derived from the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof....”But the religions are quite active in politics, most of presidents are Protestants. And American can choose his religion freely, too.

2.1.2 The Purpose and the Influence of the Religion

After spreading in China for 2000 years, Buddhist thinking has influenced Chinese inveterately, even in the language, such as “become a monk or nun late in life”, “the five aggregates are empty”, “the merit of saving a life is better than build seven-level-temp”, “While the priest climbs a post, the devil climbs ten.”(Zhu, 2006: 73) It?s hard to understand for Americans if they do not know the Buddhist doctrine well. At the same time, Christianity has also injected into American culture deeply as the main religion. The great majority American believe in the God which the Judaism and Christianity have in common, Gallup poll?s investigation in 1991 show that half American believe that God create human kind about ten thousand years ago. So, “God” in American culture takes the place of “Buddha” in Chinese culture. Some idioms and proverbs are also about the God, such as “God sends for tune to fools,”and “God bless you!”

The deities in Chinese?s heart are “useful”, although they exist as blessing people. Such as, being sent to man?s world by Jade Emperor, Zao Jun?s duty is monitoring people?s behavior, is in charge of their fate, and report all to the Jade Emperor. So, people will prepare nice offering, sweet food, paper money to bribe him. Even he is said as a lecherous god, so women are always taking a bath in the kitchen on the day he leaves.

They do not control their behaviors and purify their soul, but to bribe Zao Jun by foods and beauty to stop him telling the truth. If this happens in Christian lands, it will be considered as blasphemous acts seriously(Zhang, 2002: 48). Original Sin is generally accepted. It means that all people are falling into irdisch to suffering

8

torments. In order to reach an accommodation between God and human kind, the innocent Jesus take away human?s evil to make human immortal by sacrificing his life on the bitter cross (Linell, 2001: 17~18).

Memorable sinful feeling and Jesus? infinite mercy makes Christian understanding love and thanksgiving profoundly. Monica sends Christmas gift to friends, cooks cookies for neighbors, and lovers present roses to each other. Those give expression to emotion and friendship.

2.2 Value Differences

“Cross-cultural values have become an important part of organizational life due to globalization and an increasingly multicultural workforce. Organizational behavioral researchers have studied several cross-cultural values, but none has had as much attention as the two measured in this self-assessment: collectivism and individualism.”(Singelis, 1995: 56)

Collectivism “stands for a society in which people from birth onwards are integrated into strong cohesive ingroups, which throughout people?s lifetime continue to protect them in exchange for unquestioning loyalty.” (Hofstede, 1994 : 260) Even Pilgrimage to the West, the most romantic novel in China, is following the idea of “collective the highest”and “take general situation as heavy”. Even Sun Wukong has penetrating insight and seventy two-changes-ability, he dares to fight with the Jade Emperor, tathagata, and all hobgoblins, he gets sucked up by the Tripitaka?s Curse. It put him controlled by the human monk who can not distinguish the demon from human and tell the false from true. This arrangement show the author?s attention clearly, it means placing one?s o wn interests beneath those of the group, personal emotions are insignificant, and getting Buddhist scriptures is the most important. Then Sun?s personality publicity is transform ed into knowing and being concerned for the overall situation(Y ang, 2009: 97).

There must be powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated differences in collective society. The behavioral norms are rely more on the code of ethics than the rule of laws. Owing to the differences of personal

9

cultivation and character, the inequity, bullying and cheating will appear unavoidablely.

Individualism refers to the doctrine that the rights of the individual are the most important ones in a society. It contains individual motivations, Independent choices, self-dependence, respect others, personality liberty and respect privacy.

People in individualistic cultures emphasize their success/achievements in job or private wealth and aiming up to reach more and/or a better job position. Especially in the USA the fight about jobs and trying to climb up in the hierarchy ladder is something very common there. It just counts to get there less caring who will leave behind one. In business they try to improve their connections and to gain more value out of them, not for establishing a good relationship but just to be involved in a calculative way. Employees are expected to defend their interests and to promote themselves when ever possible.

Friends is the history of struggles of small potatoes: Monica?s parents prefer her brother and fastidious on her, for he is always top student. She does her best to changes her parents? prejudice, to lose weight and become a chef in a top restaurant successfully. Rachel is an inexperienced darling daughter, escapes marriage after she realized that she love the wedding more than her fiancé. Then grow up into an independence lady, won her own place in fashion area. Joey battles his way from a less-educated utility man to a famous Soap Star. Chandler is more adultness after going through job changing. Ross turns into a well-known University Professors. Phoebe also takes life and love seriously. It is thus clear that the individualism are playing an important role in establishing their own value.

Individualism is also including the responsibility for marriage, family and children. No pressure from family or society forces them to do something before official marriage. Chandler has several girlfriends when he is single, but after marriage, he is loyal to his wife, refusing others? temptation. He even give up the very promising job for the family?s steady.

Last but not least, neither individualism nor collectivism is absolute, absolute

10

individualism is excruciatingly undesirable in all societies, and absolute collectivism will also obliterate pe rsonality, lead to irrational “group consciousness”. We not only can see the individualism converts to collectivism under some specific circumstances in American individualism-widespreading society, but also can see individualism?s brilliance in Chinese collectivism-advocating society. We are able to hear Menci?s grandiloquence from Warring States Period: “Saint and I are of the same kind, everyone may be Shun and Y ao”, and see his tremendous momentum: “All Are for Myself.”(Y ang, 2009: 80)

2.3 Customs, Habits and Etiquette

2.3.1 Gift Giving

Gift giving is an important etiquette in both Chinese and American culture. Gift is giving as an expression of love, friendship, solidarity, to share wealth, and to offset misfortune. Gift is a declaration, both as a declaration of the relationship between you and the receiver: ordinary friends, friendly relatives, grateful underlings or zealous adorers. But more as a declaration for the receiver: his loyalty has been approved, his perseverance deserves the praise, his leadership is critical to the department, his health is cared by others, he makes doing business become a joy. In short, he deserves thanks (Liu, 2004: 28).

The differences are that the gift receivers? range is more widen in China and the gift is usually more valuable in China. Chinese also give high valued gift to the superiors and powerful man to express expectations and ask a favor. While Americans only send small gifts to receivers on special day. Such as, six characters in Friends send chocolates, flowers and fine art wares to relatives, friends, house keepers on the large festivals or on a visit as a guest.

2.3.2 Borrowing Money

Chinese always speak highly of friends? loyalty and utterly pay to friendship by saying “Jiang Yiqi”, and judge someone is trustworthy and admirable or not. So Chinese always to measure others and are strict with themselves by this. To win and

11

keep the friendship, people will treat friends like this and win good fame. Guan Yunchang from Romantic of Three Kingdoms is praised for his loyalty to his friends, Liu Bei, by riding alone for thousands of miles, slaying six generals and breaching five passes. People often say, at home by parents, to go out on a friend. We can see that friends are playing an important role in daily life, friends rely on each other. Friends share common interests and live in the life of each other. Friends are not separate entities, but the connected whole(Adler, 2004: 86). Now that people can go through fire and water for friends, borrowing money is a piece of cake.

But borrowing money indicates ones?lacking of ability in American friendship view, and they never borrow money from friends. Every American is learning to be independent from his parents economically and emotionally after 18 years old. He do all he can to look after himself and figure out the problems he meets independently. Tocqueville points out after studying this phenomenon: they do not owe anybody anything, and expecting nothing in return. They are used to self-independent and stand on their own, and they think they are the masters of their own fortunes all along (Mei, 2000: 59). They think if they rely on others too much, they must give up liberty and do the job they do not want to. So they would rather face the challenges and difficulties alone than being in chains. In their eyes, friends are the ones who share common interests and give emotional support. They never show their dependent side to their friends unless it was absolutely essential. Therefore, Chandler has to play a made-up game to lose money to Joey, instead of borrowing money to him directly. 2.3.3 Everyday Life

2.3.3.1 Food

There are two main dining types in Friends: going to restaurant and calling for takeout.

Joey and Chandler are bachelors, so they go out to eat or order takeout basically, the highest record is the two have not go out for two whole days after they bought two La-Z-Boys, all the food is takeout. And Monica is a chef, but she never cooks her own food mainly, unless on holiday or a party. And the restaurant are always crowded, they

12

even must line up in Friends. What more interesting is that they could take the seats only by giving the benefits to the restaurant staff sometimes.

However, the Chinese tra ditional is still “do it yourself and you will get food you need”, we are cooking by ourselves in home after work, we only go to restaurant if going to dinner together or are too busy. It is a very luxury thing that going to a restaurant or ordering takeaway everyday for the general public. From this, we can clearly feel the materialism and hedonism in American culture which they cherish the present, enjoy the present, worry very little for the uncertainty of the future, this is the uncertainty avoidance of Geert Hofstede?s four value dimensions. American culture belongs to low uncertainty avoidance ( Hofstede, 1994: 260) .

2.3.3.2 Clothing

People?s clothing are casual in spare time, mainly are comfortable and leisurely.

In Friends, for example, whether taking part in a small intimate gathering of friends, or a big charity party, or wedding, they will be dressed up: men, of course is wearing formal suits, while women are wearing a evening dresses, whether in winter or summer, they are swaying the length skirt. This is popular in Chinese upper society, or it is common when the stars attend the occasion. But it is rare in general population.

In Chinese tradition, the winter seems to be a hot season to holding a wedding ceremony, especially near the Spring Festival, there is a kind of festive atmosphere, and this time is the coldest time of year, how can we imagine the ordinary working class would wear strapless dresses to attend the wedding in north city? Even in summer, the formal dresses are rare.

2.3.3.3 Paying the Bill

We can see that people are more accustomed to share the cost of dining or entertainment in Friends. In one case, after learning that Monica became the chef, they go to the restaurant to celebrate. Phoebe, Rachel, Joey have economical difficulties then, so they order some cheaper food. Ross stresses that they are celebrated for Monica, so she will not pay, the rest of the five split the bill. The three

13

objected, as they ordered the cheapest things, they should not pay so much money. Finally, each person pays his own bill. From this we can see that they are going Dutch under normal circumstances, or paying their own bill under special circumstances, it is rare that one person paying bills basically.

Hospitality is our Chinese good tradition, there is no doubt that “Monica”will pay the bills in China. Even now many people have accepted the AA system, but to the whole nation, this is not our tradition, we are not good at it. For example, it is strange that our fathers go Dutch if after dinner, drinking wine. Especially in business contacts, who heard the owner will share the bills in the welcome dinner with his clients?

3 Factors affect Cultural Differences

Culture of a nation is not formed overnight, nor controlled by a group of people, but going through the baptism of thousand years? history. And many factors affect the formation of the national culture.

3.1 Cultural Background

One of the cultural different reasons between China and western is cultural background. In Spring and Autumn Warring periods of China Confucianism, Taoism and other ideologies emerged. As different ideologies developed and combated each other, the basic framework of Chinese civilization was established. And then Confucianism became the foundation stone of Chinese philosophy system. Confuci anism?s central doctrine is that of the virtue of Ren. What is Ren? Ren is translated variously as goodness, benevolence, humanity and human-heartedness. In short, Ren means affection and love. For more than 2 thousand years it has molded and shaped the civilization of China and exerted a profound influence upon almost one fourth of human race. Just as DR. Sun-Yat-Sen said: “Therefore the old morals of loyalty and piety, affection, and love, faithfulness and righteousness, are superior to those of the foreign countries Let alone that peace and harmony. These high standards of m orals are our national spirit.”

【Season 1 Index】 Episode 101 : The One Where Monica Gets A New Roommate (Pilot) Episode 102 : The One With The Sonogram At The End Episode 103 : The One With The Thumb Episode 104 : The One With George Stephanopoulos Episode 105 : The One With The East German Laundry Detergent Episode 106 : The One With The Butt Episode 107 : The One With The Blackout Episode 108 : The One Where Nana Dies Twice Episode 109 : The One Where Underdog Gets Away Episode 110 : The One With The Monkey Episode 111 : The One With Mrs. Bing Episode 112 : The One With The Dozen Lasagnas Episode 113 : The One With The Boobies Episode 114 : The One With The Candy Hearts Episode 115 : The One With The Stoned Guy Episode 116 : The One With Two Parts, Part 1

Chandler :So does he have a hump? A hump and a hairpiece? 2. Ross: I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck.. 3. Ross:Why does everyone keep fixating on that? Remember:fixate on sth. 4. Joey: Strip joint! C'mon, you're single! Have some hormones! 5. Rachel: I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. 这句话里面有三个词组需要解释,第一个是turn on,也就是打开的意思,比如turn on the radio,这里是指让某人更兴奋激动的意思,想一想,平时在路上走,这时候有个sexy美女路过,你就可以说:wow, the gal really turns me on.第二个是freak out,这个词组很重要,几乎在每集都能听到,频率高的吓人,看来口语中很实用,在论坛上我看到以下几种解释,觉得不错,a.have an extreme reaction to sth b.act abnormally (under the influence of drugs) c.make sb feel extreme plaesure or unease,也就是表达焦躁害怕不安等情绪的意思。 6. Joey: You got screwed. 7. Paul: No, it's, it's more of a fifth date kinda revelation.

But the different values and the way deal with things of different cultures lead to culture conflicts in culture communication. And this paper is working on dig deep on the movie The Treatment directed by Zheng Xiaolong on culture difference and the way for main culture conflicts. Because the Inter-culture Communication has been used more and more widely and frequently, but on the other hand people has little knowledge of culture difference. People may learn how dose other country’s people live from different kind of media and news. But it’s not only incompletely but also with political view. So some colleges open some Inter-culture Communication courses to let students learn more about culture difference to adapt to the increasing Inter-culture Communication and gain more competition in their career. But to be honest, those courses can just lead the students to Inter-culture Communication not grapple the matter of Inter-culture Communication. But films have its adventures. It’s less infected by the policy, and it’s much easier for audiences to get the main idea. That’s why film becomes such an important role in learning culture difference. But in the daily life as far as I know a normal problem that student often ignores the teaching part but focus on the entertainment part. So I took Director Zheng Xiaolong’s movie The Treatment as breakthrough point and dig the details to show the matter. I hope this paper could help students in a way. In 1960s, it’s a time of Information Technology. Canadian specialist Marshall McLuhan came up with an idea of “Global Village”. T hat’s a giant leap in human communication history between
