Passage 1

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

Television has opened windows in everybody’s life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914, Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen.

Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.

Unfortunately, television’s influence has been extreme ly harmful to the young. (76)Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the

“television generations” are more violent than their parents and grandparents.

Also, the young are less patient. (77)Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn’t do funny things like the people on children’s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That’s the time it takes on the screen.

C. People now like to read books with picture.

D. The adults are less violent than the young.

5. From the passage, we can conclude that _____.

A. children should keep away from TV

programs should be improved

C. children’s books should have pictures

D. TV has a deep influence on the young

Passage 2

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

Nonverbal (非语言的) communication has to do with gestures, movements and closeness of two people when they are talking. (78) The scientists say that those gestures, movements and so on have meaning which words do not carry.

For example, the body distance between two speakers can be important. North Americans often complain that South Americans are unfriendly because they tend to stand close to the North American when speaking, while the South American often considers the North American to be “cold” or “distant” because he keeps a greater distance between himself

and the person he is speaking to . The “eye contact” provides another example of what we are calling nonverbal communication. Scientists have observed that there is more eye contact between people who like each other than there is between people who don’t like each other.

(79)The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indicates the amount of interest he has in the things you are talking about.

On the other hand, too long a gaze can make people uncomfortable. The eyes apparently play a great part in nonverbal communication. Genuine warmth or interest, shyness or confidence can often be seen in the eyes. We do not always consider a smile to be a sign of friendliness. Someone who is always smiling, and with little apparent reasons, often makes us uneasy.

6. According to the passage, nonverbal communication _____.

A. is a method often used by people who cannot speak

B. can tell something that words cannot

C. can be used to talk with people who cannot bear

D. is less used than words

7. The South American _____.

A. Less eye contact suggests distance in relation.

B. The longer one looks at you , the more interest he has in you.

C. There is more eye contact between people who like each other.

D. Shorter eye contact show more interest in what one is talking about.

9. Too long a gaze _____.

A. may upset people being looked at

B. shows one’s great confidence

C. indicates one’s interest in the talk

D. tells you how friendly one is

10. Constant smiling without apparent reason _____.

A. is a sign of one’s friendliness

B. is a sign of one’s unfriendliness

C. makes people fell happy

D. makes people feel uncomfortable

Passage 3

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, Mostly married. (80) The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted

the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than gibing them actual instruction.

The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. Ti probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.

A. sensible and sensitive

B. competitive and interested

C. curious and friendly

网络 How Will Our Life Go on without Internet? 1. 网络提供给了人们丰富多彩和便捷的生活 2.很多人开始感觉离开网络寸步难行 3.你对网络依赖症的看法 【范文】 As a primary source of information as well as an efficient means of communication, the Internet offers people a colourful and convenient life. Just by clicking the mouse, we can enjoy a brilliant and easy life that could not be achieved ever before: shopping, making friends, contacting relatives, looking for jobs, downloading music and movies, conducting business deals, and freely airing our opinions. For its convenience, the Internet has attracted people like magnets and some people even claim that it is indispensable. To them, life can’t go on without it. Every day millions of people spend hours on end surfing the Internet. They are obsessed with it so much that they forget many other important matters. As for me, I don’t approve of unrestrained Internet reliance. Although the Internet is a gift of the technological revolution and a blessing of this information age, we should never let it control our lif e. The Internet absolutely doesn’t mean the whole world to us. Instead, we should guard against its negative effects. To those Internet addicts, I would add: Self-control can make or break your life. With proper use, the Internet serves you; otherwise, it kills you. 保护环境 Protection of Environment 1. 目前环保还存在着许多问题。 2. 为了保护环境,各国政府做了大量的工作。 3. 我的看法。 Protecting the Environment Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. For example, cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe and poisonous gas is given off by factories. Trees on the hills have been cut down and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers. Furthermore, wherever we go today, we can find rubbish carelessly disposed. Pollution is, in fact, threatening our existence. The earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and for our later generations. Fortunately, more and more people have realized these problems. Measures have been taken to cope with these problems by the government. Laws have been passed to stop pollution. I hope the problem will be solved in the near future and our home will become better and better. 节约用水 Directions: A. Title:Globle Shortage of Fresh Water B. Word Limit: about 200 words C. There is plenty of water, such as rain, water from the rivers and wells. It seems as if water is always available around us and we never have to worry about water shortage. In fact water is rather limited on the earth. With the rapid increase of population and fast development of industries, water is more needed than before. At the same time, a large amount of water has been polluted and wasted every day. Some big cities in China are facing the problem of water shorage already. There, water supply is controlled and industry has been restrained. What should we do about the water shorage? I

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to
