大学英语四级改革适用(作文)模拟试卷271(题后含答案及解析) 题型有:1. WritingPart I Writing1. A Balance Between Life and Work Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the following question. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Suppose you are invited to give a speech on how to strike a balance between life and work, what will you say and why?正确答案: A Balance Between Life and WorkDear Friends, I am very glad to be here and give you a short speech on the subject of how to strike a balance between life and work. There is a tendency in our society that people pay so much attention to material success that they unfortunately neglect their health. In my opinion, nothing can be achieved without health and the key to keeping healthy is to strike a balance between life and work. On the one hand, the meaning of life and work should be pinned down. A life without work is incomplete, but a life with work alone seems to be a case of putting the cart before the horse. On the other hand, a dynamic combination of the two factors is possible. I assume life and work are not mutually exclusive after all we have so many elites who are successful both in their lives and careers. From my personal experience, a balance can be achieved as long as you stay positive and want to make necessary changes. That is all, thank you. 涉及知识点:作文2.Some Characteristics of a Good Leader Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the following question. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Suppose you are required to state some important characteristics of a good leader, what will you say and why?正确答案:Some Characteristics of a Good Leader It is said that history refers to the stories of great people. Whether we agree to this idea or not, it is obvious that leadership still plays an important role in today’s society. How to become a good leader? It seems to me that three characteristics are needed here. First of all, a good leader is supposed to be confident. When facing the ups and downs of market, a good leader believes that he is the chosen person to steer the company into a brighter future. Secondly, a good leader is expected to be a good listener. Only by listening to all sides can one be enlightened, and actually more heads are always better than one. Last but not the least, a good leader should also be sociable. No matter how wonderful an idea is, it will become useless if no one adopts it. Compared with a silent one, a good speaker is more likely to sell ideas successfully. In short, to be a good leaderis easier said than done, but it totally deserves the effort because self-fulfillment might arise in this process. 涉及知识点:作文3.The Importance of Physical Exercise on Campus Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay about your view on the importance of physical exercise on campus. You should state the reasons and write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.正确答案:The Importance of Physical Exercise on Campus Chinese are known for their emphasis on education, however, as an essential part of education, physical exercise programs don’t receive due attention. In my opinion, physical exercise on campus is of great value for both individuals and society. First of all, college students are supposed to be physically healthy. Technical geniuses who are always ill might fail to live up to our expectation, no matter how intelligent they are. Secondly, physical exercise helps to cultivate positive attitudes, such as commitment, perseverance and self-confidence and the like. You might feel so contented after you push yourself to the limit and successfully pass the test of 1000-metre race. Thirdly, a student who is good at physical exercise is also energetic in his study, and the reverse is also true. In conclusion, the importance of physical exercise on campus should not be underestimated. We pin our hopes on college students to make our home a better place. 涉及知识点:作文4.He Who Makes No Mistakes Makes Nothing Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay commenting on the saying “He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.”You can cite examples to illustrate your point of view. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.正确答案:He Who Makes No Mistakes Makes Nothing Mistakes seem to be everyone’s arch-enemies. We are always taught to avoid making any mistakes. However, as time goes by, I become increasingly aware that one who makes no mistakes makes nothing. On the one hand, mistakes are bound to happen. According to the Murphy’s Law, anything that can go wrong will go wrong. In other words, to prepare for mistakes is much wiser than to pray for an easy success. On the other hand, mistakes serve as the touchstones of achievements. As the saying goes, the good seaman is known in bad weather. For instance, Thomas Edison is considered as a great inventor because he insists on trying despite all mistakes and failures. To sum up, to err is human. Rather than denying it, we need to accept the reality and try to make the best of it. 涉及知识点:作文5.Hope for the Best, but Prepare for the Worst Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay commenting on the saying “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.” You can cite examples to illustrate your point of view. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.正确答案:Hope for the Best, but Prepare for the Worst When you are under pressure to solve complex problems, it is always necessary to keep a good state of mind. To a certain extent, an appropriate attitude may determine whether or not you can make a difference in this world. In my opinion, the key to success is to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. For one thing, only by hoping for the best can we remain optimistic. It is true that an optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity, while a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity. For instance, Bill Gates would have stayed in Harvard if he hadn’t firmly believed in the prosperity of internet industry. For another, like anything else in life, too much optimism is as bad as too little. Blind optimism may lead to failures and that is why we should prepare for the worst. If rosy prospect turns to a sugarcoated bullet, it will become a weapon of mass destruction. In short, strategically we despise all the enemies, but tactically we should take them very seriously. 涉及知识点:作文。
PART V READING COMPREHENSION [25 MIN]In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with foursuggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.TEXT AAt some time in your life you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don’t act on your impulse, but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action iswrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo behavior is how it can change over theyears within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectlyacceptable and natural at another point in time. Topics such as death, for example, were once considered soupsetting and unpleasant that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important bookssuch as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye, people have become more aware of the importance ofexpressing feelings about death and, as a result, are more willing to talk about this taboo subject. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is topic thatAmericans talk about constantly. It’s not taboo to talk about fat; it’s taboo to be fat. The “In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, trim executives to sell their image as well as theirproducts to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor, and success. The fat person, on the otherhand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-discipline, and self-respect. In an image-conscious societylike the U.S., thin is “in”, fat is “out”.It’s not surprising, then, that millions of Americans have become obsessed with staying slim andThe pursuit of a youthful physical appearance is not, however, the sole reason for America’s fas and exercise. Recent research has shown the critical importance of diet and exercise for personal health. As inmost technologically developed nations, the life-style of North Americans has changed dramatically during thecourse of the last century. Modern machines do all the physical labor that people were once forced to do by hand.Cars and buses transport us quickly from point to point. As a result of inactivity and disuse, peopleeasily become weak and vulnerable to disease. In an effort to avoid such a fate, millions of Americans arespending more of their time exercising.1.From the passage we can infer taboo is__.A.a strong desire to do something strange or terrible.B.a crime committed on impulse.C.behavior considered unacceptable in society’s eyes.D.an unfavorable impression left on other people.2.Based on the ideas presented in the passage we can conclude “being fat” __ in American society.A.will always remain a taboo.B.is not considered a taboo by most people.C.has long been a taboo.D.may no longer be a taboo some day.3.The topic of fat is __ many other taboo subjects.A.the same asB.different fromC.more popular thanD.less often talked about than.4.In the U.S., thin is “in”, fat is “out”, this means__.A.thin is “inside”, fat is “outside”.B.thin is “diligent”, fat is “lazy”.C.thin is “youthful”, fat is “spiritless”.D.thin is “fashionable”, fat is “unfashionable”.5.Apart from this new understanding of the correlation between health and exercise, the main reason thepassage gives for why so many Americans are exercising regularly is__.A.their changed life-style.B.their eagerness to stay thin and youthful.C.their appreciation of the importance of exercise.D.the encouragement they have received from their companies.TEXT BThe discovery of the Antarctic not only proved one of the most interesting of all geographical adventures, butcreated what might be called “the heroic age of Antarctic exploration”. By their tremendous heroism, m Shakleton, Scott, and Amundsen caused a new continent to emerge from the shadows, and yet that heroic age, little more than a century old, is already passing. Modern science and inventions are revolutionizing the endurance, future journeys into these icy wastes will probably depend on motor vehicles equipped with caterpillar tractionrather than on the dogs that earlier discoverers found so invaluable and hardly comparable.Few realize that this Antarctic continent is almost equal in size to South America, and enormous field ofwork awaits geographers and prospectors. The coasts of this continent remain to be accurately charted, and themaping of the whole of the interior presents a formidable task to the cartographers who undertake the work. Oncetheir labors are completed, it will be possible to prospect the vast natural resources which scientists believe willfurnish one of the largest treasure hoards of metals and minerals the world has yet known, and almostinexhaustible sources of copper, coal, uranium, and many other ores will become available to man. Suchdiscoveries will usher in an era of practical exploitation of the Antarctic wastes. The polar darkness which hides this continent for the six winter months will be defeated by huge batteries oflight, and make possible the establishing of air-fields for the future inter-continental air services by making theseareas as light as day. Present flying routes will be completely changed, for the Antarctic refueling bases will makeflights from Australia to South America comparatively easy over the 5,000 miles journey. The climate is not likely to offer an insuperable problem, for the explorer Admiral Byrd has shown that theclimate is possible even for men completely untrained for expeditions into those frozen wastes. Some of hisparties were men who had never seen snow before, and yet he records that they survived the rigors of theAntarctic climate comfortably, so that, provided that the appropriate installations are made, we may assume thathuman beings from all countries could live there safely. Byrd even affirms that it is probably the most healthyclimate in the world, for the intense cold of thousands of years has sterilize this continent, and rendered itabsolutely germfree, with the consequences that ordinary and extraordinary sickness and diseases from which mansuffers in other zones with different climates are here utterly unknown. There exist no problems of conservationand preservation of food supplies, for the latter keep indefinitely without any signs of deterioration; it may evenbe that later generations will come to regard the Antarctic as the natural storehouse for the whole world.Plans are already on foot to set up permanent bases on the shores of this continent, and what so few years agoof human life and endeavor.was regarded as a “dead continent” now promises to be a most active center6.When did man begin to explore the AntarcticA.About 100years ago.B.In this century.C.At the beginning of the 19th century.D.In 1798.7.What must the explorers be, even though they have modern equipment and techniquesA.Brave and toughB.Stubborn and arrogant.C.Well-liked and humorous.D.Stout and smart.8.The most healthy climate in the world is___.A.in South America.B.in the Arctic Region.C.in the Antarctic Continent.D.in the Atlantic Ocean.9.What kind of metals and minerals can we find in the AntarcticA.Magnetite, coal and ores.B.Copper, coal and uranium.C.Silver, natural gas and uranium.D.Aluminum, copper and natural gas.10.What is planned for the continentA.Building dams along the coasts.B.Setting up several summer resorts along the coasts.C.Mapping the coast and whole territory.D.Setting up permanent bases on the coasts.TEXT CWithout regular supplies of some hormones our capacity to behave would be seriously impaired; withoutothers we would soon die. Tiny amounts of some hormones can modify moods and actions, our inclination to eator drink, our aggressiveness or submissiveness, and our reproductive and parental behavior. And hormones domore than influence adult behavior; early in life they help to determine the development of bodily form and mayeven determine an individual’s behavioral capacities. Later in life the changing outputs of some endocrine glandsand the body’s changing sensitivity to some hormones are essential aspects of the phenomena of aging.Communication within the body and the consequent integration of behavior were considered the exclusiveprovince of the nervous system up to the beginning of the present century. The emergence of endocrinology as aseparate discipline can probably be traced to the experiments of Bayliss and Starling on the hormone secretion. This substance is secreted from cells in the intestinal walls when food enters the stomach; it travels through thebloodstream and stimulates the pancreas to liberate pancreatic juice, which aids in digestion. By showing thatspecial cells secret chemical agents that are conveyed by the bloodstream and regulate distant target organs ortissues. Bayliss and starling demonstrated that chemical integration could occur without participation of thenervous system. The term “hormone” was first used with reference to secretion. Starling derived the term from the Greekhormone, meaning “to excite or set in motion. The term “endocrine” was introduced shortly thereafter “Endocrine” is used to refer to glands that secret products into the bloodstream. The term “e with “exocrine”, which is applied to glands that secret their products though ducts to the site of action. Examplesof exocrine glands are the tear glands, the sweat glands, and the pancreas, which secrets pancreatic juice through aduct into the intestine. Exocrine glands are also called duct glands, while endocrine glands are called ductless.11.What is the author’s main purpose in the passage?A.To explain the specific functions of various hormones.B.To provide general information about hormones.C.To explain how the term “hormone” evolved.D.To report on experiments in endocrinology.12.The passage supports which of the following conclusions?A.The human body requires large amounts of most hormones.B.Synthetic hormones can replace a person’s natural supply of hormones if necessary.C.The quantity of hormones produced and their effects on the body are related to a person’sD.The short child of tall parents very likely had a hormone deficiency early in life.13.It can be inferred from the passage that before the Bayliss and Starling experiments, most people believed thatchemical integration occurred only___.A.during sleep.B.in the endocrine glands.C.under control of the nervous system.D.during strenuous exercise.14.The word “liberate” could best be replaced by which of the following?A.EmancipateB.DischargeC.SurrenderD.Save15.According to the passage another term for exocrine glands is___.A.duct glandsB.endocrine glandsC.ductless glandsD.intestinal glands.TEXT DIf the old maxim that the customer is always right still has meaning, then the airlines that ply the worldbusiest air route between London and Paris have a flight on their hands. The Eurostar train service linking the UK and French capitals via the Channel Tunnel is winning customersin increasing numbers. In late May, it carried its one millionth passenger, having run only a limited servicebetween London, Paris and Brussels since November 1994, starting with two trains a day in each direction to Parisand Brussels. By 1997, the company believes that it will be carrying ten million passengers a year, and continue togrow from there. From July, Eurostar steps its service to nine trains each way between London and Paris, and five betweenLondon and Brussels. Each train carries almost 800 passengers, 210 of them in first class. The airlines estimate that they will initially lose around 15%-20% of their London-Paris traffic to therailways once Eurostar starts a full service later this year (1995), with 15 trains a day each way. A similar servicewill start to Brussels. The damage will be limited, however, the airlines believe, with passenger numbers returningto previous levels within two to three years. In the short term, the damage caused by the 1 million people-levels traveling between London and Paris andBrussels on Eurostar trains means that some air services are already suffering. Some of the major carriers say thattheir passenger numbers are down by less than 5% and point to their rivals-Particularly Air France-as havingsuffered the problems. On the Brussels route, the railway company had less success, and the airlines reportanything from around a 5% drop to no visible decline in traffic. The airlines' optimism on returning traffic levels is based on historical precedent. British Midland, forexample, points to its experience on Heathrow Leeds Bradford service which saw passenger numbers fold by 15%when British Rail electrified and modernized the railway line between London and Yorkshire. Two years later, travel had risen between the two destinations to the point where the airline was carrying record numbers of passengers.16.British airlines confide in the fact that__.A.they are more powerful than other European airlines.B.their total loss won’t go beyond a drop of 5% passengers.C.their traffic levels will return in 2-3 years.D.traveling by rail can never catch up with traveling by air.17.The author’s attitude towards the drop of passengers may be described as__.A.worried.B.delightedC.puzzled.D.unrivaled.18.In the passage, British Rail (Para 6) is mentioned to__.A.provide a comparison with Eurostar.B.support the airlines’ optimism.C.prove the inevitable drop of air passengers.D.call for electrification and modernization of the railway.19.The railway’s Brussels route is brought forth to show that__.A.the Eurostar train service is not doing good business.B.the airlines can well compete with the railway.C.the Eurostar train service only caused little damage.D.only some airlines, such as Air France, are suffering.20.The passage is taken from the first of an essay, from which we may well predict that in the following part theauthor is going to__.-mindedness.A.praise the airlines’ clearB.warn the airlines of high-speed rail services.C.propose a reduction of London/Paris flights.D.advise the airlines to follow British Midland as their model.答案: 1-5 CDBDB 6-10 AACBD 11-15 BDCBA 16-20 ABCB。
大学英语四级分类模拟题497(总分210,考试时间90分钟)Part Ⅰ Writing1. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay. You should start your essay with a brief account of student"s increasing reliance on technology to solve problems, and then explain the consequence of over-dependence on it. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words."You have to solve this problem by yourself. You can"t call tech support."Part Ⅱ Reading ComprehensionPassage OneA New Excuse for Unsuccessful InvestorsEconomists work on the assumption that people act rationally. If only life were that simple.Investors certainly don"t always act as they should. Among other unwise acts, they trade too much, do not diversify their portfolios (投资组合) enough and are reluctant to discard underperforming stocks. They may have been born to behave that way. A recent study into investment behavior by Stephan Siegel of Arizona State University"s WP Carey School of Business, and Henrik Cronqvist of Claremont McKenna College, illuminates the role that genes play in determining investment decisions. The authors examine the investment behavior of 15,208 pairs of Swedish twins, using data from the country"s twin registry and its tax authority, which until 2007 **prehensive records on every financial transaction. Controlling for various factors, they find that identical twins, who share all their genes, were more similar in their investing behavior than fraternal twins (异卵双胞胎) , who share about half their genes. The authors calculate that genetic factors account for between a quarter and half of the variations in irrational investment behavior between individuals. These factors are at work across more dimensions than just investing. Twins who showed a bias towards buying familiar shares rather than unknown ones, for example, also showed a preference for living closer to their place of birth and for marrying a spouse from the same region. Investors with large portfolios were particularly susceptible (易受……影响的) to genetic influences. If genes explain up to a half of the variations in investment behavior, what governs the rest? The authors also calculated the impact of shared environmental influences on the twins as well as the effect of experiences unique to one half of a twin pair. Common childhood experiences like schooling were found to have almost no influence on investment behavior. But individual experiences explain half of the variations between twin pairs—as much as, and often more than, genes. The study has its limitations. It looks at data from only one country during a limited period of time, for example. But it suggests that attempts to persuade people to invest more rationally have some big inbuilt (生来就有的) biases to **e.1. How do economists think about investors?A. They do lots of stupid things.B. They trade as much as they can.C. They are reluctant to change.D. They always make right decisions.2. How did the authors do the research?A. They looked at the data from Swiss.B. They checked all the behaviors of the twins.C. They examined the investment behavior of twins.D. They investigated less than 2,000 pairs of twins.3. What role do the genetic factors play in irrational investment?A. They account for 50% of the variations at most.B. They barely have any influence on twins.C. They make twins buy similar shares.D. They affect investing in different ways.4. What can explain the variations in investment behavior except genes?A. Environmental influences.B. Schooling experiences.C. Childhood memories.D. Individual experiences.5. What does the author of this article think of the study?A. Its limitations can be overlooked.B. The results of it are quite convincing.C. It tells us biases influence investing.D. The data it used cannot be trusted.Passage TwoA principal reason for the rapid increase in wealth disparity over the last 10 years is the different ways various economic groups invest their money. According to the study"s lead author, Fabian T. Pfeffer, more than half of the median households" wealth in 2007 was in home equity. By comparison, the median household in the richest 5thpercentile(百分位数) held only 16% of their wealth in home equity, with the lion"s share being kept in real assets, including business assets and financial instruments like stocks and bonds.Pfeffer explains that because stocks have recovered more quickly than the real estate market, average households were hurt far more than richer Americans when the housing bubble popped. When home equity is excluded from household wealth, the impact of the housing crash on average Americans is especially clear. The Great Recession"s disproportionate impact on real estate allowed the richest households, who could afford to diversify their investments, to grow wealth even during a deflating housing market.Another concern for middle class households is that many sold off investments during the recession in order to meet expenses, and are now less able to enjoy the benefits of a recovering economy. "Part of the lack of recovery is that median American households had to dispose of investments," says Pfeffer. "The troubles will stay with them for the next couple of decades as they try to reclaim these assets."Will wealth inequality continue to increase at its current pace? Pfeffer believes it would take another deep recession for inequality to double again in the next 10 years, but says his research confirms that returns to capital have been increasing at a rapid pace over the last century, creating a persistently swelling gap between the wealth of the haves and the have-nots.Some have claimed inequality is less important as long as all Americans see wealth gains over time. The rich may get richer faster, but that might not matter if the poor and middle class are also seeing their wealth increase. Pfeffer disagrees. A rising tide may lift all boats, but the Michigan professor points out that wealth not only tends to determine political influence, but also that wealth inequality greatly affects the opportunities available to the children of the middle class, especially in terms of education.1. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ______.A. the poor families invested their wealth in home equityB. the richest median households only invested a small part in home equityC. only 5% of median households held their wealth in home equityD. all the median households kept their most wealth in real assets2. Why could the richest households increase wealth even when the house market deflated?A. They invested all the wealth in the real estate.B. They took advantage of the gloomy house market.C. They could make many kinds of investments.D. They got information in advance to avoid the loss.3. Median households" disposing of investments during the recession would ______.A. make them enjoy the benefits of a recovering economyB. easily meet their expenses during the recessionC. cause troubles when they try to get back these assetsD. increase the wealth disparity for the next decades4. What made the wealth gap between the rich and the poor continue to increase?A. Rapid returns to capital.B. Income inequality.C. Hopeful signs of recovery.D. Deep recession.5. What influence may wealth inequality have on the middle class according to Pfeffer?A. Their children"s wealth may decrease.B. Their wealth may rise more slowly.C. Their children may suffer fewer educational opportunities.D. Their family may not exert political influence any more.Part Ⅲ Translation1. 1911年,中国爆发了历史上的第一次资产阶级革命——辛亥革命(the Revolution of 1911),它推翻了中国封建社会的最后一个朝代——清朝,废除了中国延续了2000多年的封建帝制,建立了中国的第一个民主共和国——中华民国。

Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by writing the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. The End of the Book?[A] Amazon, by far the largest bookseller in the country, reported on May 19 that it is now selling more books in its electronic Kindle format than in the old paper-and-ink format. That is remarkable, considering that the Kindle has only been around for four years. E-books now account for 14 percent of all book sales in the country and are increasing far faster than overall book sales. E-book sales are up 146 percent over last year, while hardback sales increased 6 percent and paperbacks decreased 8 percent.[B] Does this spell the doom of the physical book? Certainly not immediately, and perhaps not at all. What it does mean is that the book business will go through a transformation in the next decade or so more profound than any it has seen since Gutenberg introduced printing with moveable type in the 1450s.[C] Physical books will surely become much rarer in the marketplace. Mass market paperbacks, which have been declining for years anyway, will probably disappear, as will hardbacks for mysteries, thril lers, “romance fiction,” etc. Such books, which only rarely end up in permanent collections, either private or public, will probably only be available as e-books within a few years. Hardback and trade paperbacks for “serious” nonfiction and fiction will surely last longer. Perhaps it will become the mark of an author to reckon with that he or she is still published in hard copy.[D] As for children’s books, who knows? Children’s books are like dog food in that the purchasers are not the consumers, so the market (and the marketing) is inherently strange.[E] For clues to the book’s future, let’s look at some examples of technol ogical change and see what happened to the old technology.[F] One technology replaces another only because the new technology is better, cheaper, or both. The greater the difference, the sooner and more thoroughly the new technology replaces the old. Printing with moveable type on paper dramatically reduced the cost of producing a book compared with that of the old-fashioned ones handwritten on vellum, which comes from sheepskin. A Bible—to be sure, a long book—required vellum made from 300 sheepskins and countless man-hours of labor. Before printing arrived, a Bible cost more than a middle-class house. There were perhaps 50,000 books in all of Europe in 1450. By 1500 there were 10 million.[G] But while printing quickly caused the hand written book to die out, handwriting lingered on(继续存在)well into the 16th century. Very special books are still occasionally produced on vellum, but they are one-of-a-kind show pieces.[H] Sometimes a new t echnology doesn’t drive the old one out, but only parts of it while forcing the rest to evolve. The movies were widely predicted to drive live theater out of the marketplace, but they didn’t, because theater turned out to have qualities movies could not reproduce. Equally, TV was supposed to replace movies but, again, did not.[I] Movies did, however, fatally impact some parts of live theater. And while TV didn’t kill movies, it did kill second-rate pictures, shorts, and cartoons.[J] Nor did TV kill radio. Comedy and drama shows (“Jack Benny,” “Amos and Andy,” “The Shadow”)all migrated to television. But because you can’t drive a car and watch television at the same time, rush hour became radio’s prime, while music, talk, and news radio greatly enlarged their audiences. Radio is today a very different business than in the late 1940s and a much larger one.[K] Sometimes old technology lingers for centuries because of its symbolic power. Mounted cavalry(骑兵)replaced the chariot(二轮战车)on the battlefield around 1000 BC. But chariots maintained their place in parades and triumphs right up until the end of the Roman Empire 1,500 years later. The sword hasn’t had a military function for a hundred years, but is still part of an officer’s full-dress uniform, precisely because a sword always symbolized “an officer and a gentleman.”[L] Sometimes new technology is a little cranky(不稳定的)at first. Television repairman was a common occupation in the 1950s, for instance. And so the oldtechnology remains as a backup. Steamships captured the North Atlantic passenger business from sail in the 1840s because of its much greater speed. But steamships didn’t lose their sails until the 1880s, because early marine engines had a nasty habit of breaking down. Until ships became large enough (and engines small enough) to mount two engines side by side, they needed to keep sails. (The high cost of steam and the lesser need for speed kept the majority of the world’s ocean freight movin g by sail until the early years of the 20th century.)[M] Then there is the fireplace. Central heating was present in every upper-and middle-class home by the second half of the 19th century. But functioning fireplaces remain to this day a powerful selling point in a house or apartment. I suspect the reason is a deep-rooted love of the fire. Fire was one of the earliest major technological advances for humankind, providing heat, protection, and cooked food (which is much easier to eat and digest). Human control of fire goes back far enough (over a million years) that evolution could have produced a genetic leaning towards fire as a central aspect of human life.[N] Books—especially books the average person could afford—haven’t been around long enough to produce evolutionary change in humans. But they have a powerful hold on many people nonetheless, a hold extending far beyond their literary content. At their best, they are works of art and there is a tactile(触觉的)pleasure in books necessarily lost in e-book versions. The ability to quickly thumb through pages is also lost. And a room with books in it induces, at least in some, a feeling not dissimilar to that of a fire in the fireplace on a cold winter’s night.[O] For these reasons I think physical books will have a longer existence as a commercial product than some currently predict. Like swords, books have symbolic power. Like fireplaces, they induce a sense of comfort and warmth. And, perhaps, similar to sails, they make a useful back-up for when the lights go out..56. The increase of e-book sales will force the book business to make changes not seenfor centuries.57. Authors still published in printed versions will be considered important ones.58. The radio business has changed greatly and now attracts more listeners.59. Contrary to many people’s prediction of its death, the film industry survived.60. Remarkable changes have taken place in the book business.61. A new technology is unlikely to take the place of an old one without a clearadvantage.62. A house with a fireplace has a stronger appeal to buyers.63. Old technology sometimes continues to exist because of its reliability.64. Paperbacks of popular literature are more likely to be replaced by e-books. 65. Some people are still in favor of printed books because of the sense of touch they canprovide.Section C (2’×10 = 20’) Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage.Children are a delight. They are our future. But sadly, hiring someone to take care of them while you go to work is getting more expensive by the year.Earlier this month, it was reported that the cost of enrolling an infant or small kid at a childcare center rose 3% in 2012, faster than the overall cost of living. There are now large strips of the country where daycare for an infant costs more than a tenth of the average married couple’s income. This is not necessarily a new trend, but it is a somewhat puzzling one. The price of professional childcare has been rising since the 1980s. Yet during that time, pay for professional childcare workers has stood still. Actually caregivers make less today, in real terms, than they did in 1990. Considering that labor costs are responsible for up to 80% of a daycare center’s expenses, one would expect flat wages to have meant flat prices. So who’s to blame for higher childcare costs?Childcare is a carefully regulated industry. States lay down rules about how many children each employee is allowed to watch over, the space care centers need per child, and other minute details. And the stricter the regulations, the higher the costs. If it has to hire a caregiver for every two children, it can’t really achieve any econ omies of scale on labor to save money when other expenses go up. In Massachusetts, where childcare centers must hire one teacher for every three infants, the price of care averaged more than $16,000 per year. In Mississippi, where centers must hire one teacher for every five infants, the price of care averaged less than $5,000.Unfortunately, I don’t have all the daycare-center regulations at hand. But I wouldn’t be surprised if as the rules have become more elaborate, prices have risen. The tradeoff (交换)might be worth it in some cases; after all, the health and safety of children should probably come before cheap service. But certainly, it doesn’t seem to be an accident that some of the cheapest daycare available is in the least regulated South. 66. What problem do parents of small kids have to face?A) The ever-rising childcare prices.B) The budgeting of family expenses.C) The balance between work and family.D) The selection of a good daycare center.67. What does the author feel puzzled about?A) Why the prices of childcare vary greatly from state to state.B) Why increased childcare prices have not led to better service.C) Why there is a severe shortage of childcare professional in a number of states.D) Why childcare workers’ pay has not incre ased with the rising childcare costs.68. What prevent childcare centers from saving money?A) Steady increase in labor costs.B) Strict government regulations.C) Lack of support from the state.D) High administrative expenses.69. Why is the average cost of childcare in Mississippi much lower than inMassachusetts?A) The overall quality of service is not as good.B) Payments for caregivers there are not as high.C) Each teacher is allowed to care for more kids.D) Living expenses there are comparatively low.70. What is the author’s view on daycare service?A) Caregivers should receive regular professional training.B) Less elaborate rules about childcare might lower costs.C) It is crucial to strike a balance between quality and costs.D) It is better for different states to learn from each other.Passage TwoQuestions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage. When it’s five o’clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers, is defined by time. They leave when the c lock tells them they’re done. These days, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New research shows that clock-based work schedules hinder morale(士气)and creativity.Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., research from 10 a.m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning. What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does one make us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities—from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga—by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under “clock time” vs“task time.” They found clock timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in the business culture. Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies. This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-based timing should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It’ll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.71. What does the author think of time displayed everywhere?A) It makes everybody time-conscious.B) It is a convenience for work and life.C) It may have a negative effect on creative work.D) It clearly indicates the fast pace of modern life.72. How do people usually go about their work according to the author?A) They give priority to the most urgent task on hand.B) They combine clock-based and task-based planning.C) They set a time limit for each specific task.D) They accomplish their tasks one by one.73. What did Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier find in their experiments aboutclock-timers?A) They tend to be more productive.B) They always get their work done in time.C) They have more control over their lives.D) They seize opportunities as they come up.74. What do the researchers say about today’s business culture?A) It does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies.B) It does not attach enough importance to task-based practice.C) It places more emphasis on work efficiency than on workers’ lives.D) It aims to bring employees’ potential and creativity into full p lay.75. What do the researchers suggest?A) A scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation.B) It is important to keep a balance between work and life.C) Performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier.D) Task-based timing is preferred for doing creative work.Part V Translation (15') Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese to English. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than jobholders. Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. Through work people communicate with each other. Through collective activity they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him ill. Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words. From the above we can come to the conclusion that the more you work the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study and live a happy and healthy life.61. In fact, many Americans who are not so well-off often shop at “sales”or at special stores that sell things at low prices, which you may find interesting. In America, the important rule of dressing is that one should change his or her clothes every day. For example, in an American college, neither professors nor students are seen in the same clothes two days in a row. So you may find it necessary to buy more clothes than you have in China. While you are shopping in the States, you will discover that prices range considerably from time to time. The purchase of used, second-hand clothing, furniture, or other household articles may be an excellent way of saving money. Most second-hand clothes are of pretty good quality. If you are going to settle down in the States and want some furniture, you may go to a “loan closet”, where furniture rents are low cost, or you may also go to a “furniture exchange” place in the community.Sheets, blankets, and other bedclothes go on sale in most communities twice a year. Advertisements for “white sales”, that is, sales on bed linen, towels, etc., often appear in January, as well as in May, June or July. Once or twice every season, there will be “garage sales”, where you can get almost everything, from a yacht to a pair of shoes, at low prices. Prices at “discount stores” and “thrift shops” are also as low as you can imagine.66. Along with the fast pace of urbanization comes not only the rich material life and convenient transportation, but also various environmental and social problems. The most annoying problem of urban development is the increasingly heavy traffic jam. With the rapid increase in the quantity of vehicles, it takes us more time to go to work. Urban air pollution, which is caused by the ever-increasing motor vehicle emissions, is another potential threat to the health of city dwellers. Although various measures have been taken to improve air quality, it is still not satisfying enough. Other problems, such as solid waste pollution, water resources scarcity, food security, are also the results of urban development. In order to solve the problems in urban development, it is imperative to coordinate the relationship between urbanization and industrialization and to promote the construction of smart cities. And new methods and ideas should be introduced to city administrators and planners to solve the contradiction between the improvement of people's living standard and the healthy development of urbanization.2、[范文]Will E-books Replace Paper Books?Though e-books have many advantages, such as space saving, environmental protection and low cost, I strongly believe that they will never replace paper books.First of all, people comprehend better when reading paper hooks. A study showed that people who read on papers in the exam score higher than those who read electronic materials. What's more, despite the fact that the adjustable font size and backlighting will help reading, reading electronic materials will do a lot of harm to the eyes if no adequate precautions are taken. We are already exposed to too much electronic screens, and reading e-books will make it worse. Last but not least, when reading a paper book, we enjoy the peaceful state of mind, and can flip pages backward or forward to really enjoy the pleasure of reading, which is difficult to achieve whenreading e-books.E-books will be more and more popular due to the advance of technology. However, paper books are already a part of our life. No matter which one you choose, the only thing that matters is that you are reading.F-3、[范文]How to Inherit Traditional CultureIt's a popular trend nowadays that more and more people are celebrating foreign festivals, ignoring traditional ones, like the Dragon Boat Festival and Double Ninth Festival. However, traditional culture is the treasure of Chinese national culture and also an important component of Chinese advanced culture. Therefore, we should try our best to inherit and carry forward Chinese traditional culture. To begin with, the government should shoulder the responsibility to urge schools to carry out traditional culture education. Besides, it is an effective way for the young generation to inherit traditional culture through textbooks. Therefore, apart from introducing traditional festivals and customs in textbooks, it is advisable to introduce traditional philosophy and classics in the textbooks based on the psychological characteristics of primary and middle school students. Lastly, cultural innovation is also essential to inherit traditional culture. Only by combining cultural inheritance and cultural innovation can we promote cultural development positively. To improve our international competitive capability, every one of us should inherit the traditional culture creatively and absorb the essence of foreign cultures to maintain the exuberant vitality of our traditional culture.4、[范文]The Advantages and Disadvantages of New Energy VehiclesAs many foreign countries announced schedules to ban conventional fueled vehicles, new energy vehicles spark a hot discussion in Chinese automobile market. Some refuses new energy vehicles due to the low battery durability and reliability and high price, but much more people applaud for it.Admittedly, new energy vehicles are still at the initial stage in which various problems need to be solved. For example, due to the limited charging stations and battery durability, it is impossible to travel a long way by new energy vehicles. High cost is another important factor that barricades their popularity. Nevertheless, new energy vehicles are ideal in addressing energy security and urban air pollution concerns. With no emissions generated and low energy consumption, new energy vehicles are environmentally friendly and cost less compared with conventional fueled ones. From what we have discussed above, it is an inevitable trend for the new energy vehicles to dominate our life because of their various advantages. The government should launch preferential policies and encourage technological revolution to promote the development of new energy vehicles and related industries.5、[范文]Innovation AbilityAs George Bernard Shaw said, "Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their mind, cannot change anything." It cannot be denied that change, especially innovation, is the only way for human to advance. Without the power of innovation, the world will fall into an irrevocable dilemma.Innovation brings chances and changes, which will not only stabilize our nation but also enhance the overall national competitive power. Due to an innovative policy, the reform and opening-up policy, China has undergone remarkable changes over the past three decades, and people's living standard has gone up dramatically. What's more, innovation has been recognized as the sure path to success for any company. Encouraging employees to free their minds and giving them time to think of innovative ideas are effective to increase productivity. As for individuals, cultivating innovative ability is of vital importance for one's professional development. To encourage innovation, investment in research should be increased to encourage scholars to take up the challenges. And corresponding curriculum should be made to stimulate students' interest in solving problems and to foster their innovation ability from the very beginning.。
