Have you ever heard of the “lunch rush”? When it’s time for lunch, students rush insanely to the canteen [25]______ ______ they were all professional athletes competing in a race. The lunch rush is quite common [26]______ campus, especially in senior high schools.

At Qibao High School, where I [27]______(work) for nearly four years, when the last class in the morning finishes at 12:00, students rush out of every classroom [28]______ ______ ______ the bell rings, and the corridor suddenly becomes full of students who are very hungry and eager [29]______(have) a meal. After pushing their way out of the teaching building, students run faster and faster and then crush into the dining hall, [30]______ (hope) to get their food without having to line up for a long time.

The first time I saw the lunch rush, I was really shocked. As [31]______ new teacher, I only wanted to be a quiet and good-looking guy at first, the very impression [32]______ everyone would like to leave on his colleagues and students. But every time I see a lot of students run past me, I can’t help walking more quickly, and in the end I find [33]______ running too!

So heavily [34]______ the lunch rush weigh on student’s mind that some of them even make a map of their running routes! Students have different starting points in the rush, such as the teaching building, the lab building or a corner of the playground, but [35]______ ______ ______ they are, everyone’s destination is the same—the canteen. The map is used to guide students to take [36]______ (little) time possible to get to the canteen. It’s crazy!

Of course, the lunch rush is also dangerous. I once saw a boy take a tumble (跌倒) when he was running fast, but [37]______ ______ lying on the ground for a while, he rose quickly to his feet as if nothing had happened and continued running. Although the school has introduced many rules trying to ban the lunch rush, it has made little difference. Maybe [38]______ really matters most is increasing students’ awareness of the problem rather than setting up rules.

To be honest, I don’t particularly like the lunch rush not only [39]______ it can easily cause accidents but also for the fact that it does harm to students’ health when they eat right after running so fast. However, if the lunch rush didn’t exist anymore, we [40]______ find that lunch break was less enjoyable and the campus was too quiet to bear. Would we miss it?

Words always fail me when I am asked to explain why I have developed such a strong obsession with Hong Kong films, especially Jonnie To’s. And I tend to believe one’s personal [41]______ for certain types of things is about 50% inborn and 50 % [42]______ by his or her surroundings and the way he or she is brought up. Since my life has been quite plain so far without any gunfire or triad-related affairs which are normally the [43]______ elements of Jonnie To’s films, rather than

[44]______ you to death with the story about how I grew up, I’d like to share some of my thoughts about his films, even though they may not sound as [45]______ as you would expect.

From my perspective, the [46]______ of To’s films is an understanding that the choices that have huge influence on one’s fate are not always made at [47]______moments or over matters of great importance, but over minor issues. Therefore, one should always expect the unexpected in life and To’s philosophy can be summarized in his own word as “jiji rensheng”, meaning that no matter how transient or abnormal life may be, one should stay [48]______ and struggle through it and one would then look at things differently.

I hope the seeds of Jonnie To’s outlook on life planted here in your mind will [49]______ when you have finished appreciating all of his works. And If I have even been given a privilege to recommend some of his films, they would [50]______ be A Hero Never Dies (真心英雄), Throw Down (柔道龙虎榜) and Election (黑社会).

IV. Cloze (1’*15)

Directions:For each blank in the following passage there are four words marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

This week, the whole country is excited because it’s an all-English final.

Manchester United V.S. Chelsea.

The day before the game, The Manager gets all the players together for a meeting and makes us study a DVD of the 1999 final. I can [57]______ remember seeing it the first time, since I was only 13 back then. When I watch the game now, I can’t believe how much Bayern Munich [58]______ the match. They should have been three or four up. No way should we have won 2-1.

Then The Manager gives one of his team [59]______. “That game is the history of the club,” he says, turning off the [60]______, the screen still playing pictures of David Beckham running round with the trophy after the final whistle. “It proves that as a team we never [61]______. Bayern Munich should have been out of [62]______ after 45 minutes because they had lots of chances to secure their victory. But because they didn’t, we knew we’d get a chance to get the [63]______goal. And when we did, we still believed we were going to win the game in injury time. And that’s [64]______ what happened when Ole scored the winning goal.”

Then he tells us he wants to see the same from us afterwards in the final against Chelsea.

“There will be times in the 90 minutes when Chelsea is going to be in a more [65]______ position,” he says. “But you’ll have to keep your focus and get through that hard period. If you do

that, we’ll create chances and win the game.” “And remember,” he says. “No regrets.”

The rest of the story is known to all Man Utd fans. We have brought home the trophy.

(A)

The rich have traditionally passed their wealth on to their children. But now an increasing number of multimillionaires are choosing not to. The reason? They want their children to earn their own bread—and not to get used to getting money for nothing.

Nicola Horlick, a famous British millionaire, owing to the fact that she has high-flying jobs and five kids—has spent her career making a reported £25m. She now seems determined to throw off large parts of it. She already gives away 25% of her income each year; she has just revealed, in a report, that she will not be leaving the remainder to her children. “I think it is wrong to give too much inherited wealth to children because that would just ruin their lives.”

She is by no means the first to go public with this belief. Warren Buffett has given an estimated $24bn into the Warren Buffett Foundation aiming to help people in poor regions.

Buffett has always been clear on where he stands. His daughter often tells a story of finding herself without change for a car parking ticket—her father lent her $20, then immediately made her write him a check. “To suggest that the children of the wealthy should be just as wealthy,” he has said, “is like saying the members of America’s 2014 Olympics team should be made up only of the children of the 1980 Olympics team.”

Anita Roddick, the founder of the Body Shop, said in an interview, “The money we make from the company goes into the Body Shop Foundation, which isn’t one of those awful tax shelters, like some in America. It just functions to take the money and give it to those in need.”

66. Some millionaires refuse to leave much wealth to their children because __________.

A. they prefer to give wealth to charity

B. they want their business to go on healthily

C. they think wealth will bring misfortune

D. they hope children can live on their own

67. What do we learn about Nicola Horlick?

A. She has given away 25% of her wealth.

B. She is the first one to give away her wealth.

C. She won’t leave much wealth to her kids.

D. She gained her wealth from her parents.

68. According to Buffett’s daughter, her father __________.

A. makes sure that she returns his money

B. wants her to invest in the Olympic Games

C. always gives her more than necessary

D. refuses to lend her money

69. It is implied in the last paragraph that some foundations in America are used to __________.

A. provide shelter for the poor

B. build good reputation

C. support their business

D. avoid paying tax

(B)

When I first saw Alex, I wouldn’t have believed he would change my life. I had my arms full of books and I was tearing into the classroom when I ran into something solid. It was Alex.

“My…, you’re quite tall,” he said.

Of course, the class began to laugh. Angry, I walked to my seat without a word.

“Take that seat,” Mrs. Witty told the proud newcomer Alex, pointing to the only empty one, in the back of the room. Alex smiled broadly. “But I need a couple of dictionaries.” Again the class laughed, but now they were laughing with Alex, not at him. He had been here only 10 minutes and already he had them on his side.

It was the school elections that made me think of Alex again. Alex was voted vice president. “How come?” I kept asking myself. “How come this shrimp who’s only been in town for a little over a month gets to be so popular.”

So on that morning, I stopped Alex and said, “It doesn’t seem to bother you—being short.” He looked up at me.“Of course I mind being short. But there isn’t anything I can do about it. So instead of complaining, I just decided to make the best of it and focus on being myself.” “You seem to get along great,” I admitted. “But what about me? Nobody wants to date a girl taller than he is.” “The trouble with you is you’re afraid to be yourself. You’re smart. And you could be pretty. In fact, you might be more than pretty.” I felt myself turning red.

72. What can we use to best describe Alex?

A. Handsome and proud

B. Humorous and confident

C. Diligent and helpful

D. Ambitious and popular

73. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. A girl and a boy.

B. My shortcomings.

C. My helpful classmates.

D. A change in my life.

Not even the combined powers of Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain American and other Marvel’s superheroes could make The Mouse live in their shadow. On August 31st Walt Disney announced it was buying Marvel Entertainment (漫威影业) for $ 4 billion, ending the 70 glorious years of Marvel’s independence, during which it had created many of the most famous cartoon characters not invented by Disney itself.

In fact, Marvel did not put up much of a fight, accepting what most analysts think was a very reasonable price. Disney will get access both to Marvel’s creative minds and an archive (档案馆) containing around 5,000 established characters, only a small part of which have made the move from paper to the big screen.

Marrying Marvel’s characters with Disney’s talent for making money is a good idea. Marvel characters should fill a hole in Disney’s much feminine families, thus putting both sides in a win-win situation. Most of Disney’s own cartoons appeal to pre-teen girls while the Marvel characters are more likely to be just the thing for boys of same age, whom Disney has found increasingly hard to attract of late, despite its attempts. In recent years Disney has proved the unquestioned master at exploiting the same basic content through multiple channels, including films, websites, video games, live shows and theme parks.

However, there is also a risk that often presents itself in combination, especially those involving creative types: a clash of cultures. Happily for Marvel, Disney is no longer the corporate that wants to control everything it was under its former boss. His successor, Bob Iger, has turned out to be a relatively hands-off boss. Indeed, John Lasseter, the chief creative force, reportedly played an important role in reassuring Marvel’s talent that their culture would be safe in Disney’s hands. And for those comic-book fans, the Disney-Marvel combination is undoubtedly a terrific deal, which will be extremely beneficial to the promotion of other superheroes.

74. Which one is NOT CORRECT according to the first paragraph?

A. As a company, Disney is more successful than Marvel.

B. Marvel has created many famous characters on its own.

C. Marvel has been an independent company for 70 years.

D. It took Disney 70 years to buy Marvel Entertainment.

75. It can be learned from Paragraph Two and Three that __________.

A. Marvel is quite unwilling to be bought by Disney

B. the number of Marvel’s characters is larger than that of Disney’s

C. the combination can bring advantages to both sides.

D. Disney has succeeded in attracting pre-teen boys in its recent attempts.

76. What can we infer from the combination of Disney and Marvel according to the passage?

A. Marvel is the side that can gain more profits from this.

B. A clash of cultures will certainly happen when it comes to creation.

C. The price Disney offered to buy Marvel was beyond Marvel’s expectation.

D. Some less-known superheroes will appear on the big screen.

77. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the phrase “hands-off” in the last paragraph?

A. Allowing others to make their own decisions

B. Taking control of everything

C. Passing authority to others unwillingly

D. Being hard to get in touch with

Section B (2’*4)

Directions:Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

If movie trailers (预告片) are supposed to cause a reaction, the preview for United 93(93号航班) more than succeeds. Featuring no famous actors, it begins with images of a beautiful morning and passengers boarding an airplane. It takes you a while to realize what the movie is about. That’s when a plane hits the World Trade Center, the effect is shocking. When the trailer played last week at a Hollywood theater, audience members began calling out, “Too soon!” In New York City, the response was even more dramatic. The Loews Theater in Manhattan took the rare step of pulling the trailer from its screen after several complaints.

United 93 is the first feature film to deal with the events of September 11, 2001, and is certain to cause a strong emotional reaction. Is it too soon? Should the film have been made at all? More to the point, will anyone want to see it? Other 9/11 movie projects are on the way as the fifth anniversary of the attacks approaches, but as the forerunner, United 93 will take most of the heat.

The real United 93 crashed in a Pennsylvania field after 40 passengers and crew fought back against the terrorists. Writer-director Paul Greengrass has gone to great lengths to be respectful in his depiction of what occurred, proceeding with the film only after every victim’s family has approved. “Was I surprised at the agreement?” “Yes. Very. Usually there are one or two families who are more reluctant,” Greengrass writes in an e-mail. “I was surprised at the extraordinary way the United 93 families have welcomed us into their lives and shared their experiences with us.” Carole O’Hare, a family member, says, “They were very open and honest with us, and they made us a part of this whole project.” Universal (环球影业), which is releasing the film, plans to donate 10% of its opening weekend gross to the Flight 93 National Memorial Fund. That hasn’t stopped criticism that the studio is exploiting a national tragedy. O’Hare thinks it’s unfair. “This story has to be told to honor the passengers and crew for what they did,” she says. “But more than that, it raises awareness. Our ports aren’t secure. Our borders aren’t secure. Our airlines still aren’t secure, and this is what happens when you are not secure. That’s the message I want people to hear.”(Note: Answer the question or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

78. The trailer for United 93 succeeded in _______________ when it played in the theaters.

79. What did writer-director Paul Greengrass obtain before he went on with the movie?

80. Universal, which is releasing United 93, _______________ for exploiting a national tragedy.

81. According to Carole O’Hare, why is the story told besides honoring the passengers and crew?
