第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers(young people aged from 13 —19)from all over the world will spend about ten months in U. S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study, the language began to come to him. The school was completely different from what he had expected — much harder. Students rose respectfully(尊敬地) when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his i dea. “I suppose I should criticize(批评) American schools,” he says. “It is far
too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”

4. After experiencing the American school life, Mike thought .
A. a better education should include something good from both American and Germany
B. German schools trained students to be better citizens

Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they have only visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later.
I am one of those unfortunate people who have poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still get lost on my way there. When I was young I was so shy that I never dared ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hope that by some chance I would get to the spot
I was heading for.
I am no longer too shy to ask people for direction, but I often receive replies that puzzle me. Often p eople do not like to admit that they didn’t know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way, even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you cannot possibly hope to remember, and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going.
If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I always tell them I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving them wrong direction but even this can have embarrassing results.
Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him the way to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at this point, I decided it was too late to turn back and search for him out of the crowd behind me as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.
Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions of my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.
5. What is the writer going to do when someone asks him for direction?
A. He will direct the right way to the person willingly.
B. He will reply to it by the means of being a stranger to the town.
C. He will give the very person long list of direction.
D. He is going to show the man an opposite direction.
6. Why did the writer consider himself to be an unlucky dog?
A. Because of his poor sense of direction.
B. Because he always forgot the way home.
C. Because he did not have any friend.
D. Because he used to be shy and dared
not ask others the way.
7. How did the visitor feel when he was showed into the very room?
A. He felt strange.
B. He felt embarrassed.
C. He felt very sad.
D. He felt astonished.
8. Who showed the right way to the interviewee according to the passage?
A. Someone we don’t know.
B. The writer did it for himself.
C. The secretary did so.
D. A warm-hearted old lady did such a thing.
C
Greek soldiers sent messages by turning their shields (盾) toward the sun. The flashes reflected by light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages.
Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance.
In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums (鼓). Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles.
In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms.
Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds.
9. According to this passage, the Roman way of communication depended very much
upon ______.
A. fine weather
B. high tower
C. the spelling system
D. arm movements
10. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Neither the Greek soldiers nor their enemy could understand the message.
B. African soldiers shouted from tower to tower to pass message.
C. Telephone was invented by a French engineer.
D. Only by using telephone could people send speech sounds quickly.
11. The ______ way of communication made use of visible signs.
A. French

Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自信心). Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are always victims. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of
confidence.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (培育) the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks (挫折).
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it. You are on the road to success.
12. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ______.
A. can’t exercise control over themselves
B. are easily affected by windy weather
C. don’t have the power to face their f ate
D. are ready to change their minds
13. Losers would think that ______.
A. success is the result of hard work
B. working hard will lead to success
C. they fail only because of bad luck
D. they don’t make efforts to succeed
14. It can be inferred from the fifth paragraph that ______.
A. setting our expectations is essential before taking action
B. knowing cause and effect is the key to future success
C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind
D. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes
15. The last paragraph serves as ______.
A. the proof of the author’s points
B. the conclusion of the argument
C. an introduction to another topic
D. a comparison between two views

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
16 Some people express anger openly in a calm and reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They cannot or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. 17
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
18 They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ 19 Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 20
A. They say that laughter is much healthier than anger.
B. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.
C. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.
D. Anger may cause you a cancer.
E. Do not express your anger while angry.
F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.
G. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
With the development of technology, online shopping is becoming increasingly popular these days and has become a symbol of fashion.
It’s quite obvious that online s hopping has many advantages over traditional shopping. First of all, people shopping online can enjoy the great convenience that modern technology brings them. In addition, the products online tend to be cheaper than those in traditional stores. What’s mor e, by shopping online, people can save much time, no longer bothering to go to a shopping center,
However, we can’t turn a blind eye to the problems with online shopping. On one hand, the quality of the products, in many cases, seems not as superior as it
is promised. On the other hand, it is often inconvenient to change products found unsatisfied.
From my point of view, online shopping should only be used when needed. That’s to
say, you may buy things you can’t find in local markets. Besides, people should never rely too much on the Internet. Regular ways of shopping should never be abandoned. Only in this way can people protect themselves while enjoying the convenience from the Internet.。
