Celeste went to Harvard University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award.Although her novel is not about race, the characters are Asian. The main character is Lydia,a teenage girl, who is the favorite of three children born to a white mother and a ChineseAmerican father. The story is about Lydia's disappearance, and the emotions the family goes through as the mystery unfolds. The whole family deals with sorrow, regret, and exposed secrets as they search for their lost daughter.Though the characters in this story are Asian,Ng says she didn't really want to include Asian characters. She was afraid people would think the story was about real people in her life.Because she grew up in America and doesn't speak Chinese, she was actually surprised that she included Asian characters in the book. The book has taken off, especially on Amazon, where it won the Editor's Pick for No.1 Best Book of the Year in 2014.Ng is still getting used to the attention, saying she is still amazed when people tell her they have read her book. With so many readers,it's safe to say this is a book you should read. But if you're looking for a simple mystery, this book might not be for you. Most readers warn that you should not read this book unless you're prepared to cry.【语篇解读】本文主要介绍了Celeste Ng所写的一部关于一个失踪的小女孩Lydia 以及她的家庭经历的小说——Everything I Never Told You。

(2021·苏锡常镇四市二调,C)Global Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellitebased systems provide turnbyturn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But they can also cause a lot of problems, sending you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. The center studies human-computer interaction, or HCI, especially communications involving wireless devices. We spoke to Mr Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPSequipped car to use during his stay.Barry Brown:“And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination.” And, then it wasn't until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they had put in adestination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the_GPS_is_kind_of_“garbage_in_garbage_out”.Mr Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worsehas to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment.Barry Brown:“One problem with many GPS units is they have a very small screen and t hey just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it's going to the wrong place.”Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people's cars. They wrote a paper b ased on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS.”Barry Brown: “One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you're doing when you use a GPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong.”Barry Brown says this goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational (导航) skills.“The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS” lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given.Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks throughout the world today. In fact, according to some estimates, over 30% of all adults in the world drink coffee at least once a day on the average. Coffee contains a kind of drug called caffeine. Caffeine is a chemical that stimulates (刺激) the nerves of the body. Drinking coffee tends to make people a little bit more awake―at least for a short time―because of this stim ulating effect on the nervous system. A cup of coffee has, on the average, about 3% caffeine in it.One story of the discovery of the coffee plant relates to this effect of caffeine. According to the story, coffee was discovered in East Africa. The story says that coffee was first found by a goat farmer named Kaldi. This was about the year 850. Kaldi was leading his animals through the mountains and the goats were stopping repeatedly to eat the plants near the path. Suddenly, some of the goats started jumping up and down in a very strange way. Kaldi figured out that the goats were acting this way because of the plants they were eating. Kaldi himself tried eating some of the green beans (豆荚) that the goats had been eating. He, too, felt the stimulating effect of the beans. Kaldi wanted to prove what had happened, so he picked some of the beans and took them back to the village, where he told his story. The green bean got the name "Kaffa" and later "coffee" because the beans were discovered in a place called Kaffa in Africa. Then for years, people used to eat a few of the green Kaffa beans when they were in the mountains and needed extra energy to do their work. It was later found that the coffee beans could be picked and then dried until they turned brown, and then they could be stored. If the beans were dried and stored, they could be used at any time.1.What is the purpose of drinking coffee?A. To become more awake.B. To become more healthy.C. To become more happy.D. To become more clever.2.How did the goats react after eating the plants?A. They fell asleep.B. They could not find their way home.C. They started jumping up and down.D. They wanted to eat more.3.Why did the green bean get the name "Kaffa"?A. Because Kaldi loved his home village very much.B. Because Kaldi's goats loved the green bean very much.C. Because the beans were discovered in a place by this name.D. Because the beans could be picked and dried.【参考答案】1.A 2.C 3.C【解析】试题分析:本文为我们介绍了咖啡豆。

Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner’s Dilemma. The game is based on the tension (紧急气氛) between the interests (利益) of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher.Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings were. The group with the most punishment earned twenty-five percent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared last month in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. The study says the IQs--or intelligence quotients--of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points.Murray Strauss from the University of New Hampshire worked with Mallie Paschall from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation. Professor Strauss has written extensively about physical punishment of children. He says the more they are spanked, the slower their mental development. He also looked at average IQs in other nations and found them lower where spanking was more common.1.Which could be the best title of the passage?A. PunishmentB. The Best Way to Influence Behavior.C. 2021高考英语【北师大版】一轮复习提能训练(4)含(解析)答案高考题型提能练(四)Unit 4Ⅰ.阅读理解AShay asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?” Shay’s father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son, mentally and physically disabled, were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence.Shay’s father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around and said, “We’re losing by six runs (分) and the game is in the eighth inning (局).I guess he can be on our team and we’ll try to put him in to bat in the final inning.Shay struggled over to the team’s bench and put on a team shirt with a broad smile and his father ha d a small tear in his eye and warmth in heart. In the top of the final inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously joyful just to be in the game and on the field. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time, could have thrown the ball to the second baseman, but he understood the pitcher’s intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third baseman’s head. All were screaming,“Shay,Shay,Shay, all the way Shay.” Shay reached third base when one op posing player ran to help him and shouted, “Shay, run to third.” As Shay rounded third, all were on their feet, crying, “Shay, run home!”Shay ran to home, stepped on the home base and was cheered as the hero who t won the game for his team. That day, the b oys from both teams helped bring a piece true love and humanity into this world. A key suspect seems to be pesticides (农药).Honeybees who are exposed to pesticides result in the damage to their neurological (神经系统的) functions, specifically memory or behavior. And that's why the majority of worker bees disappear and leave behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees to care for the remaining immature bees and the queen. There are several other causes of the decline of bees, including the destruction of natural habitats, like woodlands, forests, and other habitats for bees.Climate change is also a factor in the decline of the wild bee population.Actually, there are a variety of methods to help the bee population grow. One way is to star t your own organic garden by planting beefriendly plants.Pesticides are used in both industrial practices and even in your home, so it is best to find organic seeds and weed killers.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。
