Get ready to be transported to this remarkable city from over 3,000 years ago!Xi'an is located in the northwestern part of China, in the heart of the Guanzhong Plain. This area has been extremely important throughout Chinese history because it sits at the very start of the famous Silk Road trade route that connected China to the West. Merchants, travelers, and even armies passedthrough Xi'an carrying precious goods like silk, spices, and ceramics. Can you imagine all the exciting people who must have visited Xi'an over the centuries?The city has such an incredibly long history that it has had many different names over time. Its oldest name was Fenghao, but then it was called Chang'an which means "Perpetual Peace." Isn't that a wonderful name for a city? During the Tang Dynasty from 618 to 907 AD, Chang'an was one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the entire world. Millions of people lived there at the peak of its golden age. Just try to picture how crowded and lively the city must have been!One of the most iconic sights in Xi'an is its massive ancient city wall that surrounds the old city center. It was first built during the ancient Zhou Dynasty way back in 1038 BC, making it one of the oldest and largest ancient military defensive systems in the world still remaining today. The wall is an incredible 39 feet tall, 50 feet wide at the base, and goes for nearly 9 miles all the way around the city center. You could actually ride a bike along the entire length of the ancient wall! How cool would that be?As you explore inside the walled city center, you'll find so many fascinating historic sites. Let me tell you about a few of themost famous ones. First up is the Drum Tower, which is an enormous historic building that marks the geographical center of the walled city. Long ago, a huge drum was beaten from the top of the tower at dawn to mark the start of each new day. Just imagine hearing that deep drumbeat sound echoing across the entire city to wake everyone up in the morning!Another iconic sight is the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, which is a massive 210 foot tall pagoda tower constructed way back in the 7th century AD during the Tang Dynasty. The pagoda got its name because ancient people thought it looked like a giant goose spreading its wings about to take flight. Don't you wish you could have seen it being built over 1,300 years ago?For me, the most legendary and incredible site in Xi'an is the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, where China's very first emperor is buried. What makes this tomb so special is the incredible Terracotta Army that silently guards the emperor for eternity. This is a mind-blowing collection of over 8,000 detailed life-size terracotta warrior statues that were buried along with the emperor as his honor guard for the afterlife. Each statue is unique, with distinctive facial features and details. It makes me wonder what the ancient artisans who sculpted them must have thought when creating such an astonishing army!The Terracotta Warriors were one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century when farmers stumbled upon them in 1974. However, the emperor's actual underground palace tomb still hasn't been excavated because archaeologists worry that opening it could damage and destroy whatever priceless artifacts still remain from over 2,200 years ago. Maybe someday in our lifetimes they'll finally open it to reveal all its mysterious secrets!Those are just a few of the amazing historical places you can explore in the ancient city of Xi'an. But aside from the impressive sights, Xi'an also has a vibrant culture and some delicious local cuisine to experience. The city is famous across China for its fresh hot “bing” flatbreads baked in clay ovens. Locals particularly love eating bing stuffed with shredded roasted meat or vegetables covered in flavorful sauces.Another beloved Xi'an specialty is “liang pi” which are long, thin noodles made of rice flour and served cold with alip-smacking garlic and vinegar dressing. The noodles are so long that they're served hanging over the side of the bowl! When eating liang pi, it's proper to slurp up the noodles noisily to show your appreciation for how tasty they are.If you're feeling adventurous, you should also try “rou jia mo,” which is often called a “Chinese hamburger.” It features stewed pork stuffed inside a small pocket bread, kind of like a handheld sandwich. It has been called the "Venice of the East" due to its lovely waterways and stone bridges arching over tranquil canals.My favorite place we visited in Suzhou was the Humble Administrator's Garden, considered one of the finest gardens in all of China. It was first built in 1509 and is a masterpiece of landscape design that seamlessly blends pavilions, ponds, rockeries, and plants into a harmonious whole. I felt totally at peace wandering around the winding paths and enjoying the beautiful scenery.We also took a boat tour along Suzhou's Grand Canal, which is over 1,000 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Floating down the ancient waterways lined with willow trees and rustic bridges was such a unique way to see Suzhou'swell-preserved old town areas. That's so fun!Another amazing thing in Xi'an is the Terracotta Army. Have you heard of that before? It's this underground museum that has thousands of life-size terracotta warrior statues that were buried with the first emperor of China over 2,000 years ago! Each warrior statue looks a little different and has unique facial features and everything. It's crazy that they've lasted so long underground.LuoyangLuoyang is another city that was the capital of China in ancient times, during the Han, Wei, Western Jin, and Northern Wei dynasties. So many dynasties had their capital there!One of the coolest things in Luoyang is the Longmen Grottoes. These are huge caves carved into the side of a mountain with thousands of Buddha statues and carvings inside them. Can you imagine how long that must have taken to carve? I'd love to go explore those caves.Luoyang also used to have these awesome gardens called the Guanlin Garden that had all sorts of exotic plants and flowers from other parts of Asia. Part of the gardens still exist but a lot was destroyed over time, which is really sad. I wish I could have seen them when they were full of rare flowers and stuff.BeijingOkay, okay, I know Beijing isn't as ancient as some other cities, but it's been around for a really long time and has so much cool history and culture, so I have to include it!Obviously one of the main attractions in Beijing is the Forbidden City. This was the palace where emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasties lived with their families and workers. It's called the Forbidden City because regular people weren'tallowed to go inside back then. But now it's open to visitors and you can walk around and see all the fancy temples, halls, gardens, and living areas. My favorite part is the Imperial Garden with the small hill, temples, and bridges over the water.Another must-see in Beijing is the Summer Palace, which used to be a summer retreat for the royal families. My favorite areas are the huge Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill where you can take a boat or hike up the hill for an amazing view. There's also the Long Corridor, which is a super long corridor with paintings on the ceiling and windows along the sides so you can look out at the gardens.I also love going to the markets in Beijing's old hutong neighborhoods. The markets sell all kinds of yummy snacks and traditional handicrafts. It's fun to wander around the narrow alleys and see people's courtyard homes.There are so many other awesome historical cities in China like Hangzhou, Suzhou, Kaifeng, Nanjing, and more.
