Being short of space is a commonproblem for university libraries in China. However, this is not the only reason why students dislike their libraries being open tomembers of the public. They fear that the quietness of the libraries will be influenced because ofvisitors' rude behavior.Chen Jie, 18, a student in Tongji University, is one who would be against opening to thepublic. “I have been to a public library before. People were chatting loudly or speaking on cellphone so you can hardly read,” Chen said. It sounds crazy, but these computer-drivendriverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have beendesigning and testing these cars, and the technology is there. So how? The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects inthe road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)areused so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors andcameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and evenwatching a film or reading a book while ‘driving' would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people — they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations. However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficultiesmaking ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hitthe child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally finddriving fun –I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to bemade –should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or wouldthere need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?I'm not certain I'd want a driverless car – but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads.12. When using a driverless car, you need only .A. read the road signs carefullyB. check the camerasC. put the address into the computerD. remember the directions13. The third paragraph mainly tells us about the of driverless cars.A. instructionsB. standardsC. advantagesD. tests“.14. The underlined word “potentially” in Paragraph 4 means “ A. possiblyB. successfullyC. especiallyD. naturally15. What's the writer's opinion about future driverless cars?A. They'll cause more accidents.B. They'll be less expensive.C. They'll use less energy.D.

Yes, they do!The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to their grandparents. There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That’s because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They’d rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休) they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don’t have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts (打折) in stores and restaurants.Bu t Western seniors don’t often live with their children—they live alone. As for me, the law of life is that success is a journey, nota destination(目的地). It means that the most important is not where you are in the end, but what you have finishedwhile you are trying along the way.One person who shares my law of life is Mark McGwire, a US baseball player. He once played for St. LouisCardinals. He wasn't caught up in the home-run(全垒打)competition in the 1998 season, but he tried his best toplay every game. And, most of the time, he helped his teammates instead of improving personal performance, because he wanted to make it a good season for the whole team.It doesn't matter whether you have the ability to be on the top in the end or win the championship. All thatmatters is that you work hard the whole time. There are a few people in the world who have already understood thatsuccess is a journey, not a destination. But wouldn't it be a much better world if everyone did? After all, it's notabout who wins or loses, but about how well you play the game. I hope I can apply this to my own life.1. In the past, it was an important thing that was sold to other countries for many centuries. And it is still a popular thing wherever Chinese silk goes.Silk is smooth, bright, soft and strong. The history of Chinese silk goes back more than 5,000 years. And here is how silk is made and where it is produced. The wife of the Yellow Emperor was having tea under a tree when a silkworm cocoon(蚕茧) fell into her cup. As she watched, a silk could be pulled from the cocoon. Then she realized that the strong silk could be used tomake cloth. She taught her people how to raise silkworms and later invented the loom(织机). Thus, an industry was born.Silk is mainly produced in the south of the Yangtze River Delta. Famous silk producing areas are Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Sichuan. Cities such as Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Shaoxing are well-known for their silk industries. It is a twinkling(闪烁) effect. Light is “not straight” when it travels through different parts of the earth's atmosphere. As the air in the earth's atmosphere is moving all the time, the light from the stars looks as ifit is moving too.The same thing also happens to things on the ground. On a very hot day, if you look at the road, the things inthe far places are not clear and move slowly. You can also see the same effect if you drop a rock into water. Therock appears a little unclear under the moving water.Scintillation causes a lot of problems for astronomers (天文学家) since they cannot see the stars clearly. Atelescope(望远镜) was sent into space so that the air movements in the atmosphere could be avoided. It took a longtime to build the space telescope but finally in 1990, a huge space telescope called the Hubble Space Telescope was successfully sent into space. Since then, astronomers have many important studies that have helped people understand space better.素材选自满分网1. 专题:任务型阅读一、填空At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted.Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars.First of all, transport should be much better.___________________________.However, by 2100, spaceship can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars! Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live.Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now. There is a problem for us to live on Mars.Mars suck(吸力) us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways.People will have more space.Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies. There will probably be no school on Mars.Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today.Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill.The spaceship will travel fast, so the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.1.根据短文内容完成句子填空(每空限填一个单词)。
