The first tomatoes were very small. By the time the Europeans brought them to Europe in the 1500s, they were larger. They looked more like the tomatoes we eat today. The history of tomatoes is interesting. When they first arrived in Italy, they were known as “love apples”. Italians believed that if one ate a tomato, he would easily fall in love with it.However, in the United States, people believed that one would lose his life after eating a tomato. In 1820, Robert Johnson decided to prove people wrong. He announced that he would eat a tomato in the town square. Everyone was shocked at the news. That morning, about 2,000 people showed up to watch. They were sure that Mr Johnson was going to die. Of course, he didn’t. and from then on, tomatoes became popular in America. In the beginning, people argued whether tomatoes were fruit or vegetables. From a scientific point of view, they were fruit. A fruit was the ripened ovary of any plant that made seeds. However, this didn’t stop most people from calling them vegetables, They said that tomatoes were eaten with the main meal-just like vegetables. So, they thought tomatoes must surely be vegetables.Whether tomatoes are vegetables or not, they won’t disappear any time now. The reason for this direction is well founded:research and test scores from the 1980s and 1990s showed that our students had fallen behindtheir international peers in all of these subject areas. Education officials, teachers andparents all felt that the situation needed to be changed, and quickly. However, in the rushto play catch⁃up in STEM⁃related areas, there's oneimportant aspect that is beingneglected (忽略): the Fine and Performing Arts, particularly drama. It's long been understood that a study of drama at the primary, middle and high schoollevel helps students improve in many areas, such as self⁃confidence, self⁃expression, communication skills, teamwork, and imagination. Most educators and parents agree thatall of these are important for students to develop at any age, but it is difficult for the sameparents and teachers to prioritize (优先安排) study time and classroom time to a subject likedrama over subjects like Math, Physics or Computer Science. It's even more difficult forpolicy makers and school officials to channel funds (资金) towards classes like drama, when the skills arts subjects develop are considered “soft skills.” When the modern world iscalling out for “hard” skills, like those needed to succeed in the tech⁃driven 21st century, how can they possibly prove it is reasonable to spend their funds that are becoming smallerand smaller on anything but STEM subjects? The short answer to the question “why spend time and money on drama?” is that dramaeducation has been scientifically proven to improve students' achievement, especially incommunication skills that are very important to a STEM education. As we develop studentswith highly refined skills in STEM subjects, it's equally important that we train the teachersthat will support continued growth in these areas. An active, communicative teacher is thebest way to get students on board in the study of STEM subjects, which can be unbearablydry. The best way to develop active communication skills? Drama. The next area in whichthe communication skills can be developed is publication and conference presentation.Drama improves students' public speaking skills necessary for STEM students to effectivelypresent papers in conferences and their writing skills necessary to publish papers. It's alsovery important for students to be able to work well with one another. In the real STEMworld, almost all scientific work happens in teams. Withou t the “ soft ” people skillsnecessary to navigate (导航) all of these interactions, no matter how technologically skilledone becomes, he or she will be at a disadvantage without the ability to communicate andwork in teams. While the nationwide trend (趋势) to focus on playing catch⁃up in STEM education isreasonable, practical, and absolutely necessary, it's important not to forget the huge effectarts, specifically drama education, have on the overall education of our children. Thequestion parents, educators, and policy makers should be asking themselves is not “can weafford to support arts education in schools?” but rather “can we afford not to?”1.Why did Americans start to stress STEM related classes?A.Because the world has moved into a tech⁃driven century.B.Because STEM classes have long been neglected in America.C.Because education officials prefer STEM classes to art classes.D.Because US students are expected to be at an advantage in these areas.2.The word “channel” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “ ”.A.afford B.direct C.create D.raise3.The third paragraph is mainly about .A.the benefits of drama educationB.the importance of STEM learningC.the abilities needed for STEM learningD.the reasons to improve drama education4.The writer probably agrees that .A.drama is more important than STEM classesB.drama education has been the nationwide trendC.the result of neglecting drama education is hard to bearD.American students have made progress in playing catch⁃upE17、The Smith family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country. Now the Smith children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many advantages to knowing more than one language. If you can speak more than one language, you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you’re more independent. People who know only one language m ust use others to help them communicate.Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understand ing of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures. Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other’s problems. It’s clear that knowing more than one language is really good. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silenced.1.The passage begins with the experience of the Smith family in order to_______.A.discuss the need for teaching a new languageB.i ntroduce the passage’s main characters to the readersC.describe the advantages of moving to another countryD.show the problems of speaking only one language2.The underlined phrase “multi-language speakers” (Paragraph 4) means “people who know ______.”A.their mother language B.a new languageC.more than one language D.body language3.According to the last paragraph, which of the following is the worst?A.Not knowing another language.B.Forgetting one’s mother language.C.Refusing to learn another language.D.Failing to communicate with others.4.What is the passage mainly about?A.The advantages of learning other languages.B.The reasons why people come to America.C.The importance of learning EnglishD.How to learn another languageF18、Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy(识字) volunteer. When I began to know what other people’s lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading. My first student Marie was a 44- year-old single mother of three. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn’t know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus timetable, she told me it would not help because she could not read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn’t always remember what she needs. Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. Also, she could only know items by sight, so if the product had a different sign, she would not know it as the product she wanted. As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’s self-confidence, which encouraged her to continue her studies. She began to make fast progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt.At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader with his reading. She sat with him before he went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was written all over her face. As she described this experience, I was proud of myself as well.
