After an American company, Liberty Media, acquired the Formula Onecompetition recently, Chase Carey—a former executive with Fox Broadcasting Company and DirecTV who by his own admission is not a fierce racing fan—was named to replace Ecclestone and to try to renovate the organization's management, reach and ambition.D)Among the goals, Carey said in an interview on Tuesday, is one that just about every global sport seemsinterested in chasing: increasing interest in the United States. "People have said we're going to "Americanize' it," Carey said. "And we're not going to do that totally. But realistically, there are some elements of Americanization that the sport could use."E)While Formula One commands enormous audiences throughout much of the world, many Americansports fans know it as that other motorsport, the one that is not Nascar (纳斯卡车赛). Formula One teams race far more technologically advanced vehicles around tracks all over the world-in magnificent events in places like Malaysia, Monaco, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, and on tradition-rich tracks like Silverstone in England and Monza in Italy too.F)The series has an annual race in Austin, Texas. But within "a few years," Carey said, he plans to bringanother to a destination American city, like New York, Los Angeles, Miami or Las Vegas. Carey's ambitious plan is two-fold: first, change the business model of Formula One, which he said was a "one-man show" under Ecclestone that had a largely narrow vision when it came to negotiating partnership deals; and second, alter the way fans experience the sport, both in person and remotely, so that connections between the audience and people within the series are easier to make.G)Increased digital access for fans, a more behind-the-scenes experience for broadcast viewers andinnovation in areas like virtual reality-what is it like to speed around a track inside a Ferrari?-are among the possibilities. "The sport has clearly been underserved," Carey said. "It doesn't do anything digitally. There's no marketing. It doesn't tell any stories. The goal in this is to make the fans connect to the live experience as much as possible, and the tools you have to do that, we're not using at all."H)The larger question, though, is a familiar one: Is there room for Formula One in the ever-crowded sportslandscape of the United States? Opinions vary, particularly because viewing habits among consumers continue to evolve. John Bloom, a professor at Shippensburg University who has studied American sports history, said the biggest challenge for any sport trying to increase its presence in the United States was framing itself in a way that had lasting appeal. "Sports generally become popular in some way because they establish a narrative," Bloom said. "When I think of motorsports in the U.S., what we allthink of is Nascar, and the narrative of Nascar is sort of rural, white, working-class Americans, mostly in the South, connecting with the atmosphere of those races. That's the narrative. When I think of the narrative of Formula One, it's a very different kind of audience."I)That difference, Carey said, is significant. While some might immediately link Formula One to Nascar interms of American growth, Carey said Formula One's brand research had indicated there was very little crossover; rather, Formula One fans generally cite other so-called elite events, like Wimbledon or the Ryder Cup, as competitions they enjoy. "Other than they're both cars, the Nascar fan base is a very different fan base," Carey said. "It's a very regional fan base. Formula One is a global, famous brand of stars. These are machines that shock and awe you."J)Carey's background is in deal making and innovation. At Fox Broadcasting Company, he was a top advisor for years, known for his skill in helping to lead the launch of the company into sports, as well as the start of Fox News Channel. After going to DirecTV, he positioned the satellite provider as a mainstream option in millions of households.K)Now, after Liberty Media paid $4.4 billion to acquire Formula One, he is charged with making the investment pay off. "I think they can build Formula One in the U.S.," said Patrick Crakes, an executive at In Vivo Media Group who spent 25 years at Fox Broadcasting Company before leaving in 2016 as a senior manager at Fox Sports. "People don't work on their cars anymore. They don't want that connection anymore. It's about technology and pushing the limits. It's about speed, danger and risk. And Formula One has that more than any other racing series."L)That is what hooked Carey, and he said he thought his experience was not unusual. He recalled attending Formula One's Monaco race last year and being overwhelmed by the ceremony leading up to the event, the way the race charmed the city for days ahead of the start. In his mind, it felt like a Super Bowl (超级碗橄榄球赛).M)Then, on race day, he watched as the cars rocketed out of a tunnel and went screaming toward a tight turn with the city's harbor and the Mediterranean Sea in the background framing the scene. He was fascinated."You can't help but be awed," he said, "and I think that feeling can be translated to the viewer."N)He added: "The broader sport is a little too inward-looking, and we need to be more open. In some ways, I'm glad to be coming from the outside. The guys who are in the sport forever are sitting there saying: 'We can't do that. We can't do that because it's never been done that way.""36.Chase Carey believes greater use should be made of digital technology to make Formula One moreaccessible to its fans.37.Chase Carey was deeply impressed by the ceremony preceding last year's Monaco race.38.One of Chase Carey's goals is to make Formula One more appealing to Americans.39.A former motorbike parts dealer led Formula One for the past forty years.40.Chase Carey thought the audience of Formula One could be made to share his feeling about the race.41.Chase Carey used to serve as a top advisor for a major broadcasting company.42.Chase Carey intends to make connections easier between the audience and the Formula One racers.43.The new leader of Formula One admitted he was not super interested in car racing.44.People's opinions differ as to whether Formula One can be promoted in the U.S.pared with other racing series, Formula One focuses more on speed and involves more danger.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.Supermarkets have long been suffering as one of the thinnest-margined businesses in existence and one of the least-looked-forward-to places to work or visit. For more than a decade, they have been under attack from e-commerce giants, blamed for making Americans fat, and accused of contributing to climate change.Supermarkets can technically be defined as giants housing 15,000 to 60,000 different products. The revolutionary idea of a self-service grocery, where people could hunt and gather food from aisles rather than asking a clerk to fetch items from behind a counter, first came about in America. There is some debate about which was the very first, but over the years a consensus has built around King Kullen Supermarket, founded in New York in 1930.For some 300 years, Americans had fed themselves from small stores and public markets. Shopping for food involved mud, noisy chickens, clouds of flies, nasty smells, bargaining, and getting short-changed. The supermarket imitated the Fordist factory, with its emphasis on efficiency and standardization, and reimagined it as a place to buy food. Supermarkets may not feel cutting-edge now, but they were a revolution in distribution at the time. They were such strange marvels that, on her first official state visit to the United States in 1957, Queen Elizabeth II insisted on an impromptu (即兴的)tour of a suburban-Maryland Giant Food. The typical supermarket layout has barely changed over the past 90 years. Most stores open with flowers, fruit and vegetables at the front as a breath of freshness to arouse our appetite. Meanwhile, they keep the milk, eggs, and other daily basics all the way back so you'll travel through as much of the store as possible, and be tempted along the way.In the early days, as the supermarket multiplied, so did our suspicion of it. We have long feared that this "revolution in distribution" uses corporate black magic on our appetite. The book The Hidden Persuaders, published in 1957, warned that supermarkets were putting women in a "hypnoidal trance (催眠恍惚状态)," causing them to wander aisles bumping into boxes and "picking things off shelves at random."46.What problem have supermarkets been facing?A)They are actually on the way to bankruptcy.C)They are forced to use e-commerce strategies.B)They have been losing customers and profits.D)They have difficulty adapting to climate change.47.What does the passage say about the idea of a self-service grocery?A)It was put forward by King Kullen.C)It has been under constant debate.B)It originated in the United States.D)It proves revolutionary even today.48.What did supermarkets do by adopting the Fordist factory approach?A)They modernized traditional groceries in many ways.B)They introduced cutting-edge layout of their stores.C)They improved the quality of the food they sold.D)They revolutionized the distribution of goods.49.What is the typical supermarket layout intended to do?A)Arouse customers' appetite to buy flowers, fruit and vegetables.B)Provide customers easy access to items they want to buy.C)Induce customers to make more unplanned purchases.D)Enable customers to have a more enjoyable shopping experience.50.What have people long feared about supermarkets?A)They use tricky strategies to promote their business.B)They are going to replace the local groceries entirely.C)They apply corporate black magic to the goods on display.D)They take advantage of the weaknesses of women shoppers.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. The traditional school year, with three months of vacation every summer, was first implemented when America was an agricultural society and the summer months were needed for farm work. Since then, we've completely changed as a nation. Students no longer spend summers farming, but they aren't in school, either. The average American student receives 13 weeks off from school each calendar year-with about 11 of those during the summer. Few other countries have more than seven weeks off in a school calendar. With the U.S. lagging behind other countries in academics, it's time to consider year-round schooling. One benefit of this change is that students will not fall victim to the "summer slide," or the well-documented phenomenon where students forget some of the knowledge they have acquired when too much time is taken off from school. Decades of research shows that it can take from 8 to 13 weeks at the beginning of every school year for students to get back to where they were before the summer holiday. But year-round schooling isn't just about academics. Teachers and students experience a closer relationship in year-round schools than they do in traditional schools and, in the absence of any long-term break, students do not feel detached from the school environment. These closer bonds and greater attachment pay off. Research shows that students in year-round schools are more self-confident and feel more positive about their schooling experience. But don't kids need time to relax? Some childhood development experts believe that time off from school is vital to healthy development as kids are not designed to spend so much of their time inside classrooms and the summer break provides a perfect opportunity to get outside. The problem with this argument is that most children aren't playing outside or even spending time with other kids. While some children visit summer camps, most stay at home, watching TV or playing games on electronic devices, which hardly benefits them. The U.S. has changed from a farming economy to a knowledge- and innovation-based economy, so it makes sense for the school year to change as well.51.Why did America's traditional school year have a three-month summer vacation?A)Students needed to help with farm work.B)Students needed time to learn necessary farming skills.C)The agricultural society then attached less importance to academics.D)America lagged behind other countries in making a scientific school calendar.52.What benefit will year-round schooling bring students in addition to improving their learning?A)It will help them get back to where their lessons started.B)It will enable them to absorb what they have learned.C)It will familiarize them with the school environment.D)It will strengthen their relationship with teachers.53.What do some childhood development experts believe about the long summer vacation?A)It meets students' need to study on their own.B)It enables students to learn about the outside world.C)It satisfies students' desire to stay longer at home.D)It contributes to students' healthy growth.54.What is the argument against the experts' idea of a long summer vacation?A)It does little good to most students.B)It benefits few students playing outside.C)It leads students to neglect their studies.D)It makes students addicted to computer games.55.What does the author think of the traditional school year in the U.S. today?A)Well-grounded.C)Outdated.B)Culture-bound.D)Welcomed.Part IV Translation(30 minutes)Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. You should write your answer on Answer Sheet 2.改革开放40多年以来,中国政府对高等教育越来越重视,高等教育已经进入稳步发展阶段。

一、Paying Others to Worry About Your Online Image(慢速)A reputation -- what people think of you, good or bad -- is built one message at a time. The difference today is that people can get their messages out to lots of other people at lightning speed through websites and social media. So, not surprisingly, an industry is fast developing around managing online reputations for individuals and businesses.KEN WISNEFSKI: “Up to eighty percent of people have been influenced in a purchasing decision by what they‟ve read or seen online.”Ken Wisnefski is chief executive of WebiMax, a company he started in two thousand eight. WebiMax is a search engine optimization, or SEO, company. Search engine optimization involves different ways to improve the results of online searches.WebiMax offers several different services, but Ken Wisnefski says reputation management is growing the fastest. Some of his customers need help with urgent publicity problems. Others are seeking long-term management of their online image. Mr. Wisnefski says about one-fifth of his business is with companies and individuals outside the United States. How does reputation management work?WebiMax has two sides to its business. The company can organize online publicity campaigns to try to limit the harm done by negative comments or bad news. Mr. Wisnefski says when a client gets in the news for the wrong reasons, his company does not try to hide what happened. Instead, it develops a campaign to show that the client is dealing with the problem in a productive and positive way, he says.In that sense, the work seems a lot like old-fashioned public relations, but in cyberspace. But what if clients are the target of lies or maybe an organized effort to harm their reputation? Then WebiMax would use its legal team to try to have the comments removed.KEN WISNEFSKI: “We realized pretty early on that it wasn‟t going to just be a marketing function, that there also needed to be a legal function involved with it. And marrying the two together is what really has impact and makes this successful.”In the United States, not all speech is protected by the Constitution. And even if the comments are true, the threat of a costly legal fight may be enough to get them removed.Ken Wisnefski thinks the legal side of reputation management is only going to grow. He says WebiMax is profitable and expects ten to fifteen million dollars in revenue this year.Clients of companies that manage reputations can pay thousands of dollars a month or as little as a hundred dollars a year. But here is some free advice.KEN WISNEFSKI: "If you‟re not paying attention or at least monitoring what‟s being said about you online, you‟re making a mistake because other people are paying attention to that."And that's the Economics Report in VOA Special English. This week on our show, we play new music from Bon Iver.We also answer a question about the hours of American workers. But, first, we learn about a small American company that is answering a big demand for chopsticks in China.DOUG JOHNSON: In the United States, many manufactured goods include the words “Made in China.” But one small company in the American state of Georgia is making traditional Chinese chopsticks -- and sending them to China. Faith Lapidus has more.FAITH LAPIDUS: Chopsticks are sticks used in some Asian countries to eat food. They are often made out of wood, but can also be made of plastic. Most of the world‟s c hopsticks are made in China. Several hundred Chinese manufacturers produce about sixty three billion pairs of chopsticks a year. However, those manufacturers need more wood. One small company in the American city of Americus, Georgia has recognized this demand. It started producing chopsticks for export to China. Korean-American Jae Lee is the president of Georgia Chopsticks. He says the world market for chopsticks is huge.JAE LEE: “Right now, we are making about two million pairs of chopsticks per day. Bu t we are increasing. End of this month, we‟ll have seven machines coming in. So it‟ll increase to like four million per day. End of this year, we will produce ten million per day.”FAITH LAPIDUS: About one-third of the world‟s population uses chopsticks. J apan, for example, uses about twenty three billion pairs of the sticks each year.China may need more wood for producing chopsticks. But David Garriga says there is plenty of wood near Americus, Georgia. Mr. Garriga is the head of the local economic development council.DAVID GARRIGA: “Rural Georgia and the cities of rural Georgia, they‟re blessed with tons of natural resources. The Pacific Rim, especially areas in China and Japan, they‟ve run out of wood, but we have an abundance of it.”In central Georgia, sweetgum and poplar trees grow in large numbers. In fact, these trees make good chopsticks. This is because the wood is not firm and has a nice color. Unlike many Asian chopsticks, these Georgia-made chopsticks do not need to be lightened with chemicals and bleach.Georgia Chopsticks opened at the end of last year. It received four hundred fifty requests for jobs in just two weeks. Today, the company employs fifty seven people at its factory. Jae Lee hopes to increase production and add one hundred more workers by the end of the year.Every chopstick his company makes goes to Asia, where they are sold to stores in China, Korea, and Japan. Right now, Georgia Chopsticks cannot keep up with demand for its product. It costs Jae Lee less than one cent to make a pair of chopsticks. But he says he is not making any money yet. To earn a profit, he needs to produce more than four million chopsticks a day. He says he hopes to do this in the next month or two.David Garriga notes that the American connection to the production of chopsticks has a funny side.DAVID GARRIGA: “Suddenly, there‟s a huge nation, the fastest growing in the world, that finances part of our national debt, and here we are making their basic productsand shipping it to them, like they‟ve done for us for years. It‟s just kind of a reverse.”DOUG JOHNSON: Our question this week comes from China. Lisa wants to know about the work hours of Americans. Lisa says she works from seven thirty until eleven in the morning. She then has an hour to eat and rest. She returns to work at twelve, and stays on the job until four thirty. How much time do Americans spend working? Her question is timely since the Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released results of its American Time Use Survey for twenty ten. The survey began in two thousand three. Its aim was to provide estimates about how, where and with whom Americans spend their time. This kind of information can be helpful to media organizations, economists, sociologists and other experts as part of their research.Rachel Krantz-Kent is program manager of the American Time Use Survey. She says one finding showed that men who have a job worked, on average, more hours than employed women.RACHEL KRANTZ-KENT: “One of the interesting things we know from the American Time Use Survey is that, on average, American men spend more time working for pay than American women. However, while men work more hours than women, we also observe that women are spending more time providing childcare and doing household work such as cle aning and food preparation.”The American Time Use Survey found that employed people work an average of seven and a half hours a day. Full-time male workers average eight point two hours a day, while women average seven point eight hours. The report shows that more people work on weekdays than on Saturday and Sunday – the traditional weekend days. Eighty-two percent of employed people work on an average weekday, compared with thirty-five percent who work on an average weekend. The report notes the times individuals work. Between two thousand five and two thousand nine, over fifty percent of American workers were at their job by eight in the morning. The report also tells how Americans spend their time away from work.On an average day, nearly everyone fifteen years of age and older took part in a non-work activity like watching television, socializing or exercising. The study found that people spend an average of two point seven hours a day watching television.Time spent reading was linked to age. Adults seventy-five years and older averaged one point one hours of reading a day on weekends. But people between the ages of fifteen and nineteen averaged about six minutes of reading a day. Those individuals spent more time playing games or using a computer for non-work activities. How many hours do you spend at work and at play? Leave a comment on our website, .HOST: Bon Iver is the musical project of singer and songwriter Justin Vernon. His second album, “Bon Iver” has received praise from critics across the United States. One reporter says this album proves that rock is not dead -- it is only sleeping and dreaming. Jim Tedder has more.JIM TEDDER: That was the song “Calgary.” Like many songs on the album “Bon Iver” this one is soft, dreamy, and poetic. It is often hard to understand the meaning of the words Justin Vernon is singing. But what is clear is that every song is linked to a place. All of the songs are named after a place, either real or imaginary. Justin Vernon is more interested in listeners having an emotional experience from his music than understanding meaning of the words. His first album, “For Emma, Forever Ago,” was released in two thousand seven. He recorded most of the music in a small house in the woods in his native Wisconsin. He went there to be alone for several months and to recover from personal problems, including the breakup of his band. The extreme quiet had a major influence on him. He began to write new music. This resulted in the creation of an album that caught the attention of several performers, including Kanye West. He asked Justin Vernon to work with him on his two thousand ten album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”On his latest album, Justin Vernon has expanded his sound and added more musical instruments and effects. We close with the last song on the album “Bon Iver, Bon Iver.” “Beth/Rest” sounds like it could have been recorded in the nineteen eighties. More than one in five Spaniards are out of work. Unemployment is the highest of the seventeen nations that use the euro. But one area of the economy that seems to be doing well is English classes.A report this year from the EF Education First company listed Spain is a "low proficiency" country in English. Spain ranked just below Italy and just above Taiwan.About a fifth of the world speaks Spanish. There are many Spanish language TV shows and movies. Spaniards can also watch Hollywood movies dubbed in Spanish or news from Latin America. One of the few English voice s on Spanish TV belongs to Richard Vaughan.RICHARD VAUGHAN: "Hello and welcome back to another half-hour segment of Cloverdale's Corner. Today is Tuesday, and Lourdes has had to leave but we still have four people here ... "Richard Vaughan is from Texas but for thirty-five years has lived in Spain. He operates that country's biggest English teaching company. It even has its own TV channel. "Aprende Ingles" -- Learn English -- is Spain's only national channel in English. He says people watch his channel and take his classes to get a better job.RICHARD VAUGHAN: "People don't learn English here for cultural reasons. Some do. But the motive is always, ninety-nine percent of the time, professional."Modern changes in the world economy -- globalization -- may offer chances for a better job in another country. But economic problems at home can also make people feel they have few other choices.NICK BYRNE: "People realize, you know, they are not only going to have to be mobile out of a choice, but they are going to have to be mobile because of necessity."Nick Byrne is director of the language center at the London School of Economics.NICK BYRNE: "We found that, in our university language centers across the UK and indeed across Europe, that language learning is up. We're not talking about people doing a whole degree in languages, but people going on evening courses -- English courses particularly."In Spain, some of those study ing English hope for jobs in Britain or the United States. But others want to work for international companies with offices in Spain. Many companies now require workers to be bilingual.Dominic Campbell is an American who lives in Madrid and teaches English part time.DOMINIC CAMPBELL: "It's a lot of jobs now are actually mandatory that you know at least two languages and a lot of them actually want at least Spanish and English. And, a lot of them are asking for Spanish, English and French -- especially airlines."Mr. Campbell says many of his students thought speaking Spanish was enough.DOMINIC CAMPBELL: "They just think, you know, 'My English is poor, I don't want to speak it, I don't want to learn how to speak it. I've got Spanish, that's all I need.'"But people also need jobs. More than forty percent of Spaniards in their twenties are out of work. Inigo Gomez has a degree in education.INIGO GOMEZ: "I'm a teacher, and I couldn't find a job here. So I think it's a good idea to go to the United Kingdom and try to find a job as a Spanish teacher."And while he does that, many Spaniards for the first time will be spreading their new education in English at home.四、Big Cats at Home on the Range(常速)And that's the VOA Special English Education Report. I'm Bob Doughty.Five years ago, U.S. conservation biologist Josh Donlan got some people howling with a controversial article in the scientific journal Nature. Almost literally howling, since the subject was his proposal to “re-wild” the Great Plains.Re-wild, meaning to re-locate wild animals, including predators such as lions and cheetahs - from Africa to vast, fenced “ecological history parks” on the American prairie. The goal would be to save species that are endangered because of theirever-shrinking habitat in Africa and to re-invigorate the predator-prey pecking order on the plains. The Nature article noted that 13,000 years ago, at the end of the Pleistocene geological era, the North American prairie teemed with big vertebrates such as woolly mammoths, five species of horses and an early version of the cheetah. They were all hunted to extinction when humans arrived.Saber-tooth tigers and the like are gone for good. But those who favor there-wilding idea say today‟s threatened elephants, camels, and big cats could avoid the same fate on the American plains. And what fabulous photographic safari attractions they would make for tourists.Critics had fun with all this. One writer envisioned elephants in the driveway throughout the Midwest. Someone else pictured camels frozen solid in prairie winter snowdrifts. But other conservationists said re-wilding deserved a fair look. The Nature Conservancy, for instance, gave it a “hats off” salute for being provocative, though it added, “If you want to think big, why not think big in Africa?”So it goes without saying that there are no elephants outside of circuses and zoos in Kansas or Oklahoma. But small steps have been made. Former television magnate Ted Turner is modestly re-wilding his New Mexico ranch, where he has brought back a giant, nearly extinct, breed of tortoise.Fine, say sheep and cattle ranchers. But inviting hungry l ions to roam America‟s grasslands would be insane, they say - fence or no fence.五、Prison Grooms Inmate EntrepreneursIt can be hard to find a job in the current tight U.S. economy, especially when you have a criminal record. At one prison in the American Northwest, inmates are learning not just how to get jobs, but how to open businesses of their own.A class called LIFE (Lifelong Information For Entrepreneurs), at the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, teaches inmates how to start their own businesses after they‟re released from the Oregon women‟s prison.MercyCorps Northwest, the local branch of a global development organization, started the program four years ago, based on its experience in international aid.“We were looking for ways that we cou ld apply our expertise around economic development and small business management to populations that could use it," says Doug Cooper, assistant director of MercyCorps Northwest. "It‟s identical to what we do internationally, except we apply it here in Oreg on and Washington.”The eight-month class mixes hardcore small business training with softer skills like goal setting and self care. Student Saresa Whitley is serving five years for assault. She has a job lined up after her release in January, but plans to also start a small business selling handicrafts.“When I was talking about knowing if my business is viable or not, through a profit-and-loss model, I was like …Wow, I didn‟t even know the word viable before, and now I do,‟" Whitley says. "I‟ve learned a lot, I‟ve learned a lot about how to write a business plan, about effective communications skills, how to listen, something I didn‟t know how to do before.”These lessons are an important part of the program. In fact, says student Cynthia Thompson, who‟s serving time for ID theft, they‟re kind of the point.“I think the goal of it is to produce people that are being part of the community, paying their taxes and being volunteers. Not just necessarily successful small businesses, but just successful, acc ountable people in the community.”So far it seems to be working. It‟s too soon for official results, but unofficially, MercyCorps says only three of its approximately 100 graduates have returned to prison. That‟s way below the national recidivism rate, which is over 50 percent. Graduates have opened courier businesses, cosmetology salons and craft stands at farmer‟s markets.Lori graduated from the first LIFE class while in prison for aggravated theft and now runs an auto repair shop. She prefers not to give her last name because she worries about the stigma of being an ex-convict.“We work so hard, and we go the extra mile for any customers, and, you know, bad word of mouth spreads faster than anything else,” she says.Even after graduating, Lori continued to check in with a MercyCorps mentor. Together, they worked through a whole host of small business questions.“What works, what doesn‟t? And is it worth having a website of your own, and what avenues of advertising can you exploit for free?" Lori says. "Those are the type of things that I found invaluable.”MercyCorps Northwest just started up another LIFE program at a women‟s prison in Washington state. Cooper hopes the idea spreads throughout the country‟s prisons and their 1.5 million inmates.“Ninety-five, 96 percent of those people are going to come back to our communities with the stigma of being an ex-felon," he says. "And to the extent that we make it hard for them to come back and be successful, it hurts everybody. It hurts our community. It hurts our tax base.”Cooper believes helping former inmates succeed is what a corrections system should be about. Student Saresa Whitley plans to apply what she‟s learned to that small craft business - and also to her life.“When I walk in that room, I‟m not just a number anymore. I‟m a person," she says about the LIFE classes. "And they have taught me to set goals, and I didn‟t have that before. I didn‟t have that hope that I can do something different.”六、Refugees Revitalize BuffaloHe spent five years as a political prisoner in his native country where Win says he was tortured and starved. Escaping after paying smugglers to hide him in the bottom of a fishing boat, he eventually made it to the United States where he was granted asylum. In 2005, he was resettled in Buffalo. Now, Win runs a laundromat where the walls are plastered with colorful posters denouncing Burma‟s military junta.“Whenever I put the sign, the customer they ask me question and they can explain current situation in my country," he says. "Where is location of Burma? What happening in Burma now? Who is the leader now? What is the military dictatorship?”Thousands of Buffalo residents already know the answers. Like Win, they fled from Burma. And they also landed in America‟s t hird poorest city unable to speak English with almost no money or job prospects. But some long-time residents see investing in these refugees as Buffalo‟s way forward.“What we feel like we‟re doing is just giving people a little leg up on prosperity and we‟ve seen people take hold of that and blossom with it," says Bonnie Smith. "Slowly the community begins to improve.”Working through her church, the retired businesswoman helped Win develop a business plan and provided collateral for him to get a micr oloan. It‟s something he never would have qualified for on his own. In the past decade, close to 10 nonprofits in Buffalo have started or added refugee resettlement to their mission. That can include English classes, driving lessons or help buying and improving one of the economically-depressed region‟s thousands of abandoned homes.Cities along the Great Lakes used to rule the American economy, manufacturing steel by the shipload. Now, these once mighty metros are known as the Rust Belt. Since the aging industrial plants in Buffalo started closing in the 1950s, more half of its population has left. But now, thousands are moving in: refugees from Burma, Sudan and other far-away, conflicted places. Officials are trying to turn their relocation into a renaissance.According to Aaron Bartley, director of PUSH Buffalo, refugees are perfect candidates to bring Rust Belt cities back to life. “The way we‟re going to solve that is by making it a neighborhood people want to stay in. And a neighborhood the various communities - whether they‟re Burmese, Somalian, Sudanese, Liberian - want to put down roots in. That they don‟t see it as a stopping point to get to another place.”This wouldn‟t be happening on such a large scale without the Refugee Protection Act of 1980. The law was designed to stop population loss in Rust Belt cities like Buffalo, Detroit and Cleveland by subsidizing refugee resettlement there. About 1,500 refugees came to Buffalo just last year.“Even with that 1,500 refugees, we still saw a popu lation decline in our community. We‟re still trying to catch up even with those refugees coming in,” says Molly Short, who runs Journey‟s End, one of Buffalo‟s four resettlement agencies. While most American cities have one agency like hers, the Rust Belt is home to dozens and Short says they can barely meet the demand. She adds that services like hers have been severely hurt by federal budget cuts in recent years. Often times, the agencies can‟t predict what help a refugee needs to feel at home.“Sometimes we‟ll have a refugee arrive who has literally never been in a car before they left a refugee camp, never used electricity and then we have refugees come in who are doctors and scientists and mathematicians.”And many times, the educated and illiterate are competing for the same small pot of jobs. While Burmese refugee Win feels quite welcome in Buffalo, some customers can be difficult and Win feels business could be better.“Not really bad, not really good. So-so. Not much money for my pocket. And then for future more and more better, I believe this.”Win says his microloan will be paid off in a year or two. Then, he plans to assist others just as he was aided - helping out-of-work refugees open their own shops and create their own jobs.七、Harvard's First Woman President Settles into RoleHarvard University is arguably one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1636, it is among the oldest in the United States. In 2007, Harvard named historian and scholar Drew Gilpin Faust its 28th president. She is the first woman to hold that position.Role modelOther American universities have had women presidents. But when Harvard named Drew Gilpin Faust as its first woman president, the world took note.“At a press conference right after the announcement of my appointment, I was asked something about what it was like to be the first woman president of Harvard,” Faust recalls. “My response, which I had not predetermined, was to answer that I was n‟t the woman president of Harvard, I was the president of Harvard.”But Faust soon realized that being the first woman to hold that position did matter to a lot of people.“The response to my appointment from young girls and women all over the world, f rom the parents of young girls, was so moving,” she says. “They found in my appointment an indication of hope and aspiration that they or their children could embrace."That, she says, made her recognize "that being the first woman president of Harvard has a lot of significance and that it is meaningful, and I ought not to forget that.”Breaking barriersWhile Faust serves as a role model for young girls today, she had no one to look to as she was growing up. She never dreamed of a life in academia, let alone becoming president of an Ivy League university.“I grew up at a time where very little was expected of women,” she says. “It was anticipated that probably I would marry and be a wife and mother. There was little discussion what I‟d be when I grew up beyond that.”Her mother, who never worked outside of the home, was not one to encourage Faust to higher ambitions. “My mother was very much a part of traditional views of women,” Faust says, adding that her mother seemed quite angry to have limited options for herself.“Something she said to me quite often when I was being rebellious or imagining something was possible for myself that she didn‟t think was possible, she would say, …It‟s a man‟s world, sweetie, and the sooner you figure it out the h appier you will be.‟”But Faust was able to take advantage of the growing wave of new opportunities for women in the 1960s. Sadly, Faust's mother didn't live to witness her daughter‟s success. She died when Faust was 19.Early influencesFaust grew up surrounded by history in Virginia‟s Shenandoah Valley. She lived on Lee Jackson Highway, named for two Civil War generals who fought for the south, in an area where many battles had been fought between the Union and Confederate armies. She recalls playing Civil War endlessly with her brothers. "I always had to be Grant, because my older brother got to be Lee, and it was a long time before I discovered that actually Lee had lost and Grant had won.”But the War Between the States became more than a game to Faust. She is a noted scholar of the American South and the Civil War.Her most recent book, "This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War," was named one of the “10 best books of 2008” by the New York Times.Cost of learningSince becoming president of Harvard, Faust has made it a priority to ensure that the cost of an education at the elite private university does not prohibit talented applicants from attending. The annual tuition, room and board for a Harvard undergraduate is more than $50,000, but the majority of students pay much less.Faust says 60 percent of the students receive financial aid from the university. “And, of those students, the cost of education is just about $11,000 a year. And for students from families with incomes under $60,000 a year, there is no parental contribution expected at all.”Model educationFaust‟s responsibilities as president of Harvard have taken her to many corners of the globe. She says American higher education is seen as a model in many other countries. She recalls meeting with a group of university presidents in China last year.“What they wanted to talk with me about was the liberal arts and humanities and how they could introduce some of those perspectives into their higher education system, in order to bring the kind of imaginativeness, curiosity and creativity that they saw as characteristic of American higher education.”It is, Faust says, a lesson for Americans to keep in mind. In this troubled economy, many are searching for immediate economic return when they graduate. But education, she says, should prepare people for a lifetime, not just a single career.。

商务英文作文reportReport on Business Trip to Shanghai。
Arrived in Shanghai on Monday morning, greeted by our local partners at the airport. The weather was hot and humid, quite different from our hometown. 。
First meeting took place at the partner's office. The discussion was productive and we reached some initial agreements. The office was modern and well-equipped, with a great view of the city skyline.Lunch was at a traditional Chinese restaurant. The food was delicious, but some dishes were a bit too spicy for my taste. The conversation was light-hearted, and we got to know each other better outside of the business setting.Visited a few potential retail locations in the afternoon. The traffic was chaotic, and it was interesting to see the bustling streets and crowded sidewalks. Theretail spaces varied in size and layout, giving us a better understanding of the market.Dinner was at a fancy restaurant with our partners. We tried some local delicacies and toasted to a successful partnership. The atmosphere was lively, and we enjoyed some entertaining conversations. The next day, we had more detailed discussions and finalized the terms of our partnership. The negotiations were intense at times, but we managed to find common ground and come to an agreement that satisfied both parties.Overall, the trip was a success. We established a good rapport with our partners and made significant progress in our business dealings. Looking forward to returning to Shanghai in the future.。

It is my great honor to stand before you today and share with you some thoughts on the importance of business and environmental sustainability. In today's world, the relationship between business and the environment has become increasingly intertwined. As responsible corporate citizens, we have a moral obligation to protect our planet and ensure asustainable future for our children and grandchildren. The first point I would like to make is that environmentalsustainability is not just a matter of conscience; it is also a smart business decision. As we all know, natural resources are finite, and climate change is a reality that we cannot ignore. By adopting environmentally friendly practices, businesses can reduce theiroperating costs, improve their brand reputation, and attract environmentally conscious customers. One of the most effective ways to achieve environmental sustainabilityis by reducing energy consumption. This can be done through various means, such as investing in energy-efficient equipment, improving insulation, and implementing energy management systems. By reducing our energy consumption, we not only help the environment but also save money on energy bills.Another important aspect of environmental sustainability is waste reduction. As businesses, we produce a significant amount of waste, much of which ends up in landfills. By implementing recycling and composting programs, we can reduce our environmental impact and save money on waste disposal costs. Moreover, by repurposing or upcycling waste materials, we can create new products and generate additional revenue streams. In addition to reducing energy and waste, businesses can also contribute to environmental sustainability by supporting renewable energy sources. Investing in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can not only reduceour carbon footprint but also provide us with a more reliable and cost-effective energy supply.Furthermore, businesses can play a crucial role in promoting environmental education and awareness. By organizing workshops, seminars, and training sessions, we can educate our employees and customers aboutthe importance of environmental sustainability and inspire them to take action. Now, let's talk about the benefits of environmental sustainability for businesses. Firstly, it helps businesses to comply with regulations and avoid penalties. Governments around the world are implementing stricter environmental regulations, and non-compliance can result in fines and legal action. By embracing environmental sustainability, businesses can ensure that they remain compliant with these regulations.Secondly, environmental sustainability can improve a business's reputation and brand image. Consumers are increasingly aware of environmental issues and are more likely to support businesses that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. This can lead to increased customer loyalty, higher sales, and greater market share.Lastly, environmental sustainability can drive innovation and create new business opportunities. As businesses seek to reduce their environmental impact, they often discover new ways to improve their operations and create new products and services. This can lead to increasedprofitability and a competitive advantage in the marketplace. In conclusion, the business case for environmental sustainability is clear and compelling. By adopting environmentally friendly practices, businesses can reduce costs, improve their brand reputation, and create new opportunities. It is our responsibility as corporate citizens to prioritize environmental sustainability and work together to build a more sustainable future for all.Thank you for your attention, and I hope that this presentation has inspired you to take action in your own organizations. Together, we can make a difference and leave a positive legacy for future generations.Thank you.。
business idea英语作文In the current era of environmental consciousness, the need for sustainable and eco-friendly businesses has never been more apparent. The fashion industry, notorious for its significant environmental footprint, presents a golden opportunity for innovation and reform. The idea I propose is a Sustainable Fashion Boutique, a business dedicated to providing stylish, eco-friendly clothing and accessories while promoting sustainable living. This venture not only addresses the growing consumer demand for sustainable products but also contributes positively to the environment. The market for sustainable fashion is expanding rapidly as consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions. According to recent studies, morethan 60% of consumers in the United States express a willingness to pay more for sustainable products. This trend is even more pronounced among younger demographics, particularly millennials and Gen Z, who are driving the demand for transparency and sustainability in fashion. The sustainable fashion market, while growing, is still relatively niche. Major players like Patagonia and Everlane have set a high standard, but there is ample room for new entrants who can offer unique value propositions. The key to standing out in this market is to combine sustainability with high-quality, stylish products that appeal to fashion-conscious consumers. The Sustainable Fashion Boutique will offer a wide range of products, including:Clothing: From everyday basics to high-fashion pieces, all made from sustainable materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled fabrics.Accessories: Eco-friendly handbags, jewelry, and shoes that complement our clothing line.Upcycled Items: Unique pieces created from repurposed materials, giving new life to old fabrics and accessories.A critical component of our business model is ethical sourcing and manufacturing. We will partner with suppliers who adhere to fair labor practices and use sustainable materials. Additionally, we will ensure that our manufacturing processes minimize waste and reduce carbon emissions. While sustainable products often come at a premium, our pricing strategy will balance affordability with quality. We aim toposition our products as accessible luxury, offering competitive prices without compromising on sustainability or style. Our brand will be built on the pillars of sustainability, style, and social responsibility. The branding will emphasize our commitment to the environment and ethical practices, appealing to consumers who value these principles.A robust online presence is crucial for reaching our target market. Our e-commerce platform will feature an easy-to-navigate website with detailed product descriptions, sustainability credentials, and an engaging blog that educates customers on sustainable fashion.Leveraging social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest will be central to our marketing strategy. We will collaborate with influencers who align with ourbrand values to reach a broader audience and generate buzz around our products. For customers who prefer shopping in person, our boutique stores will offer a unique shopping experience. The stores will be designed with sustainable materials, reflecting our brand ethos. Additionally, we will host events such as eco-fashion shows and workshops on sustainable living to engage our community. The initial investment will cover costs such as securing retail space, setting up an e-commerce platform, initial inventory, and marketing expenses. We anticipate that an investment of approximately $500,000 will be required to launch the business. Our primary revenue stream will be sales of clothing and accessories. We also plan to introduce a subscription box service, offering customers curated selections of sustainable fashion items delivered monthly. Additionally, hosting workshops and events will provide supplementary income and enhance brand loyalty. We project that the Sustainable Fashion Boutique will reach profitability within three years. In the first year, we aim to achieve a modest revenue of $1 million, growing to $3 million by the third year as we expand our product range and customer base. One of the main challenges in sustainable fashion is ensuring a reliable supply of eco-friendly materials. To mitigate this risk, we will establish strong relationships with multiplesuppliers and invest in research to identify new sustainable materials.Educating consumers about the benefits of sustainable fashion is crucial. Our marketing efforts will focus on transparent communication about our products’ sustainability credentials and the positive impact of their purchase decisions. While competition is inevitable, our focus on high-quality, stylish products and a strong brand identity will differentiate us from other players in the market. Continuous innovation in design and sustainability practices will also keep us ahead of the curve. The Sustainable Fashion Boutique represents a promising business idea that aligns with current market trends and consumer demands. By offering stylish, eco-friendly products and promoting sustainable living, we can tap into a growingmarket while making a positive impact on the environment. With a clear business model, strategic marketing, and a commitment to ethical practices, this venture has the potential to become a leader in the sustainable fashion industry.。
Good morning/afternoon/evening, and thank you for joining us today for this distinguished gathering. It is a great pleasure to stand before you to share some insights and predictions about the future of the global business landscape. The title of my speech is "Navigating the New Normal: Embracing Innovation and Adaptation in the Post-Pandemic Era."As we all know, the world has undergone a dramatic transformation in the past two years, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This unprecedented event has reshaped our lives, our economies, and our perspectives on the future. Today, I would like to discuss how businesses can navigate this new normal by embracing innovation and adaptation. The Impact of the Pandemic on BusinessThe pandemic has had a profound impact on businesses across the globe. Many industries have been severely affected, with some even facing complete shutdowns. However, amidst the chaos, we have seen a surge in digital transformation and innovation as companies sought to survive and thrive in this new environment.1. Remote Work Revolution: The pandemic has accelerated the shifttowards remote work. Companies that were initially reluctant to adoptthis model have now realized its numerous benefits, including increased productivity, reduced office space requirements, and improved work-life balance for employees.2. Digital Transformation: Businesses have had to adapt quickly to the digital landscape. This has led to a surge in e-commerce, cloud computing, and digital payment solutions. Companies that embraced these technologies have been able to maintain their operations and even grow their market share.3. Supply Chain Disruptions: The pandemic has highlighted the vulnerabilities of global supply chains. Companies are now focusing on diversifying their supply chains, reducing their reliance on a single source, and investing in local production capabilities.Innovation as a Key to SuccessIn this new normal, innovation is no longer a luxury but a necessity for businesses to stay competitive. Here are some key areas where innovation can play a crucial role:1. Product and Service Innovation: Companies need to continuously innovate their products and services to meet the evolving needs and preferences of their customers. This could involve developing new products, enhancing existing offerings, or creating entirely new business models.2. Technology Innovation: Investing in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain can provide businesses with a competitive edge. These technologies can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer experiences.3. Business Model Innovation: Companies should be open to rethinking their business models to adapt to the changing market landscape. This could involve entering new markets, exploring new revenue streams, or even pivoting to a completely different business.Adapting to the New NormalAdapting to the new normal requires a willingness to change and a commitment to continuous learning. Here are some strategies that businesses can adopt:1. Embrace Flexibility: Businesses need to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. This includes being open to new ideas, willing to experiment, and ready to pivot when necessary.2. Invest in Training and Development: Employees are the backbone of any organization. Investing in their training and development will ensure that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the new normal.3. Collaborate and Partner: Collaboration and partnerships can help businesses access new markets, resources, and expertise. Forming strategic alliances with other organizations can provide a competitive advantage. The Future of Global BusinessAs we look ahead, it is clear that the future of global business will be characterized by uncertainty and volatility. However, it will also be filled with opportunities for innovation and growth. Here are some predictions for the future:1. Sustainability: As climate change and environmental concerns become more pressing, sustainability will play a crucial role in the future of business. Companies that prioritize sustainability will gain a competitive advantage and attract environmentally conscious consumers.2. Healthcare and Wellness: The pandemic has highlighted the importance of healthcare and wellness. Businesses that can contribute to improving public health will be well-positioned for success in the future.3. Cybersecurity: With the increasing reliance on digital technologies, cybersecurity will become a critical concern. Companies that invest in robust cybersecurity measures will be better equipped to protect their assets and maintain trust with their customers. In conclusion, the post-pandemic era presents both challenges and opportunities for businesses. By embracing innovation and adaptation, companies can navigate the new normal and thrive in this dynamic and unpredictable environment. It is essential for businesses to stay informed, be proactive, and remain resilient as they chart their path forward.Thank you for your attention, and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.---Please note that this is a fictional speech and the content is designed to provide a general framework for a business news English speech. We stand united in solidarity not only to deliver justice to the terrorist network responsible for those attacks but to protect our people and uphold the enduring values that keep us strong and keep us free. And we salute the people of Paris for insisting this crucial conference go on - an act of defiance that proves nothing will deter us from building the future we want for our children. What greater rejection of those who would tear down our world than marshaling our best efforts to save it?Nearly 200 nations have assembled here this week - a declaration that for all the challenges we face, the growing threat of climate change could define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other. What should give us hope that this is a turning point, that this is the moment we finally determined we would save our planet, is the fact thatour nations share a sense of urgency about this challenge and a growing realization that it is within our power to do something about it.Our understanding of the ways human beings disrupt the climate advances by the day. Fourteen of the fifteen warmest years on record have occurred since the year 20XX - and 20XX is on pace to be the warmest year of all. No nation - large or small, wealthy or poor - is immune to what this means. This summer, I saw the effects of climate change firsthand in our northernmost state, Alaska, where the sea is already swallowing villages and eroding shorelines; where permafrost thaws and the tundra burns; where glaciers are melting at a pace unprecedented in modern times. And it was a preview of one possible future - a glimpse of our children's fate if the climate keeps changing faster than our efforts to address it. Submerged countries. Abandoned cities. Fields that no longer grow. Political disruptions that trigger new conflict, and even more floods of desperate peoples seeking the sanctuary of nations not their own. That future is not one of strong economies, nor is it one where fragile states can find their footing. That future is one that we have the power to change. Right here. Right now. Butonly if we rise to this moment. As one of America's governors has said, “We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change, and the last generation that can do something about it.”I've come here personally, as the leader of the world's largest economy and the second-largest emitter, to say that the United States of America not only recognizes our role in creating this problem, we embrace our responsibility to do something about it.Over the last seven years, we've made ambitious investments in clean energy, and ambitious reductions in our carbon emissions. We've multiplied wind power threefold, and solar power more than twentyfold, helping create parts of America where these clean power sources are finally cheaper than dirtier, conventional power. We've invested in energy efficiency in every way imaginable. We've said no to infrastructure that would pull high-carbon fossil fuels from the ground, and we've said yes to the first-ever set of national standards limiting the amount of carbon pollution our power plants can release into the sky.The advances we've made have helped drive our economic output to all-time highs, and driveour carbon pollution to itslowest levels in nearly two decades. But the good news is this is not an American trend alone. Last year, the global economy grewwhile global carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels stayed flat. And what this means can'tbe overstated. We have broken the old arguments for inaction. We have proved that strongeconomic growth and a safer environment no longer have to conflict with one another; theycan work in concert with one another. And that should give us hope. One of the enemies that we'll be fighting at this conference iscynicism, the notion we can't do anything about climate change. Our progress should give ushope during these two weeks - hope that is rooted in collective action.Earlier this month in Dubai, after years of delay, the world agreed to work together to cut thesuper-pollutants known as HFCs. That's progress. Already, prior to Paris, more than 180countries representing nearly 95 percent of global emissions have put forward their ownclimate targets. That is progress. For our part, America is on track to reach the emissionstargets that I set six years ago in Copenhagen - we will reduce our carbon emissions in therange of 17 percent below 20XX levels by 20XX. And that's why, last year, I set a newtarget:America will reduce our emissions 26 to 28 percent below 20XX levels within 10 years from now.So our task here in Paris is to turn these achievements into an enduring framework forhuman progress - not a stopgap solution, but a long-term strategy that gives the worldconfidence in a low-carbon future. Here, in Paris, let's secure an agreement that builds in ambition, where progress paves theway for regularly updated targets - targets that are not set for each of us but by each of us,taking into account the differences that each nation is facing. Here in Paris, let's agree to a strong system of transparency that gives each of us theconfidence that all of us are meeting our commitments. And let's make sure that the countrieswho don't yet have the full capacity to report on their targets receive the support that theyneed. Here in Paris, let's reaffirm our commitment that resources will be there for countries willingto do their part to skip the dirty phase of development. And I recognize this will not be easy.It will take a commitment to innovation and the capital to continue driving down the cost ofclean energy. And that's why, this afternoon, I'll join many of you to announce anhistoricjoint effort to accelerate public and private clean energy innovation on a global scale. Here in Paris, let's also make sure that these resources flow to the countries that need helppreparing for the impacts of climate change that we can no longer avoid. We know the truththat many nations have contributed little to climate change but will be the first to feel its mostdestructive effects. For some, particularly island nations - whose leaders I'll meet withtomorrow - climate change is a threat to their very existence. And that's why today, in concertwith other nations, America confirms our strong and ongoing commitment to the LeastDeveloped Countries Fund. And tomorrow, we'll pledge new contributions to risk insuranceinitiatives that help vulnerable populations rebuild stronger after climate-related disasters. And finally, here in Paris, let's show businesses and investors that the global economy is on afirm path towards a low-carbon future. If we put the right rules and incentives in place, we'llunleash the creative power of our best scientists and engineers and entrepreneurs to deployclean energy technologies and the new jobs and new opportunities that they create all aroundthe world. There are hundreds of billions ofdollars ready to deploy to countries around theworld if they get the signal that we mean business this time. Let's send that signal. That's what we seek in these next two weeks. Not simply an agreement to roll back thepollution we put into our skies, but an agreement that helps us lift people from povertywithout condemning the next generation to a planet that's beyond its capacity to repair. Here,in Paris, we can show the world what is possible when we come together, united in commoneffort and by a common purpose. And let there be no doubt, the next generation is watching what we do. Just over a week ago, Iwas in Malaysia, where I held a town hall with young people, and the first question I receivedwas from a young Indonesian woman. And it wasn't about terrorism, it wasn't about theeconomy, it wasn't about human rights. It was about climate change. And she asked whether Iwas optimistic about what we can achieve here in Paris, and what young people like her coulddo to help.I want our actions to show her that we're listening. I want our actions to be big enough to drawon the talents of all our people - men and women, rich and poor - I want to show herpassionate, idealistic young generation that we care abouttheir future. For I believe, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that there is such a thing as being toolate. And when it comes to climate change, that hour is almost upon us. But if we act here, ifwe act now, if we place our own short-term interests behind the air that our young people willbreathe, and the food that they will eat, and the water that they will drink, and the hopes anddreams that sustain their lives, then we won't be too late for them. And, my fellow leaders, accepting this challenge will not reward us with moments of victorythat are clear or quick. Our progress will be measured differently - in the suffering that isaverted, and a planet that's preserved. And that's what's always made this so hard. Ourgeneration may not even live to see the full realization of what we do here. But the knowledgethat the next generation will be better off for what we do here - can we imagine a more worthyreward than that? Passing that on to our children and our grandchildren, so that when they lookback and they see what we did here in Paris, they can take pride in our achievement.Let that be the common purpose here in Paris. A world that is worthy of our children. A worldthat is marked not by conflict, but by cooperation; and not by human suffering, but byhuman progress. A world that's safer, and more prosperous, and more secure, and more freethan the one that we inherited.Let's get to work. Thank you very much.。
36American Companies Are 0ptimistic About Businesses in ChinaAccording to the 2021 China Busi-ness Report issued by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and PwC (China), nearly 60% of surveyed member companies of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai said that their investment in China of 2021 is higher than that of 2020, up by about 30%. Also, about 77.1% surveyed companies saw net profits in 2020.No large-scale shift of production line/supply chain This survey received feedback from corpo-rate representatives from 338 member compa-nies of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. The survey covers a series of top-ics including sales revenue, business prospects, investment plans, operation challenges, human resources and economic and trade policies. The report showed that about 59.5% of sur-veyed companies predict that their investment in China in 2021 will be higher than that of 2020, up by 30.9%; about 77.1% of companies saw net profits in 2020, almost the same with the previ-ous years; 82.2% of companies said their revenue would increase in 2021 compared with last year; 69.7% of companies predict that in the next 3-5 years, their business growth in China would outperform other markets of the world. After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, it was forecast that U.S. enterprises in China would redirect their pro-duction line / supply chain to other foreign lo-cations. However, the report does not confirm this statement. Of the 125 U.S. manufacturing companies surveyed by the report, 72% have no plans to redirect any production capacity out of China in the next three years. Among the remaining 28% of companies that do have plans to transfer production capacities, only two companies (accounting for 1.6%) intend to transfer all their production activities in the next three years. The survey also showed that no companies plan to transfer its production activities back to the United States.Ker Gibbs, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, said, “China’s business environment has seen quick recovery as the pandemic was under control last year. However, the impact from the pandemic still persists. For example, some of the surveyed companies are bothered by the limitations of cross-border travel. But generally speaking, our member companies have excellent business per-formance in China.” However, Ker Gibbs said that the impact from the pandemic spread will continue, with surveyed companies expected to continue to see trouble with limitations on cross-border travel. Investment in China shows increasing trend Despite the uncertainties of the global pandemic, companies surveyed plan to increase their investment in China. About 59.5% of sur-veyed companies said that their investment in 2021 would be higher than 2020, up by 30.9%, By Lily Wang About 59.5% of surveyed companies said that their investment in 2021 would be higher than 2020, up by 30.9%, almost 62% of the investment of2018.almost 62% of the investment of 2018.The report shows that surveyed companies continue to deem China as the key market in their global investment plan. About 26.9% of surveyed companies said that China will be their top des-tination for global investment, up by 2.3%; about 42.5% of retailers said the Chinese market is their most important destination for investment, al-most double that of 2020 (19.5%). Regarding seg-mented industries, the industries most favored by global investors are the pharmaceutical, medical facility and life science industries (about 30.4% of companies regard China as top investment desti-nation, up by 11.4% from last year).Of all the companies intend to increase investment in China, about 81.7% of companies said they mainly focus on the growth potential of the Chinese market. About 69.7% of sur-veyed companies said that in the next 3-5 years, their business revenue growth in China would outperform other markets of the world.Other factors that make companies decide to increase investment in China include: China’s professional personnel reserve (25%) and available low-cost and highly efficient supply chain (21.4%). Companies from medical health (33.3%), food and agriculture (36.4%), bank, finance and insu-rance (25.9%) and other sectors also mentioned “invest or purchase start-up companies” when talking about increasing investment in China.Jeff Yuan, Transfer Pricing National Servic-es Leader for PwC China and Hong Kong, said that many American companies and multina-tional companies in China have been increasing investment in digital technology and are com-peting in related fields. Mean-while, companies of retail,TMT and high-tech industriesare focusing on their ESG (en-vironment, social responsibil-ity and corporate governance)strategies. The report shows that thepercentage of companies in-creasing investment in digitaltechnology due to the COV-ID-19 pandemic in 2021 (69.8%)is larger than last year (56.1%).Sectors that see more than 80%of companies increasing suchinvestment include: food andagriculture (90.9%), medicalhealth (83.3%) and logistics, transportation, storage and retail(83.3%). In sectors where thetotal investment increase is low, companies deciding to invest indigital technology still account for a large share, such as manufacturing (67.1%), management consulting (66.7%) and real estate, engineering and construction services (61.5%).In addition, 43.8% of surveyed companiesregard “brand positioning targeting interna-tional consumers” as the major driving forcesof promoting ESG. As environmental protec-tion policies become more of a priority for the government, and favorable policies to supportgreen economy are put in place, about 37.8%of surveyed companies regard “supervision re-quirements” as amajor driving force for ESG.Jeff Yuan said, “for American companies thatare optimistic about their business developmentin China, the formulation of a comprehensive and reasonable China strategy is their top mission. Asthe investment is expected to increase in 2021, wealso predict that more and more companies willinvest in retail and digital technology, to win thefavor of Chinese consumers.”Further tap the Chinese marketRecently, Gregory Gilligan, President ofthe American Chamber of Commerce in China, said that member companies of the American Chamber of Commerce in China are confidentabout the development of the Chinese market. This is also reflected in the China Business Re-port. In the past 5 years, about 60% of member companies said that China is one of their top3 investment destinations in the world; in thepast 5 years, about 80% of member companiessaid they would not redirect their production or procurement to other foreign locations. The world economy is facing tremendous challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic is continu-ing to spread around the world. The American Chamber of Commerce in China conducted aquick survey about the impact of the pandemicon the business environment last March. GregoryGilligan said that 81% of surveyed companiesthought that small and medium-sized companieshave contributed about half of the annual revenue. Also, about 36% of surveyed companies said thatabout 1/4 of their supply chain partners are smalland medium-sized companies. Therefore, “foreign companies in China are inter-dependent withChina’s small and medium-sized companies. Such connection has become much closer due to the im-pact from the pandemic,” said Gregory Gilligan.Gregory Gilligan also indicated that the American Chamber of Commerce would playarole as a bridge to promote bilateral trade and economic relations. It will leverage resources from multinational companies to share best practiceand engage in projects to promote development ofChina’s SMEs and business exchanges betweenChinese and American companies.Of all thecompaniesintend toincreaseinvestment inChina, about81.7%of companiessaid theymainly focus on the growth potential of the Chinese market.37。

The following is a graph of the nondurable purchases shows, among other things, that purchases of energy products such as gasoline and fuel oil have been declining in recent quarters, due to higher prices, but in the fourth quarter in 2008 and first quarter in 2009 went up slightly, due to lower prices. Generally consumer nondurable purchases, in real terms, went up in the first quarter in 2009, back down in second quarter in 2009 and then up in third quarter 2009 and thereafter.According to these statistics, we can know that the economy in America is growing. Although the economic level in the first quarter of 2011 did not reach the level in the second and third quarters of 2010, there is a great room to increase. Besides, American spend on nondurable goods is still growing year by year. Therefore, because of the stable economic condition and consumption situation in America, we believe that American market has great potential.Cultural AssessmentIn America, there is an American Textile History Museum. This exhibition explores the story of how people have used art and science over the past 250 years to create beautiful and useful textiles. This 35,000 square-foot, bi-level installation includes imaginative period settings, gallery displays and interactive stations featuring over 500 artifacts from the Museum's collections of textiles, clothing and accessories, tools, machines, photographs, and advertising ephemera. We can see that American people pay much attention to textiles and its development. In addition, in America, people have strong consumption power. They love the new and loathe the old, so they always purchase new clothes to replace the old. They also pay attention to their living environment. They would like to live in a comfortable environment. Therefore, it is important for them to purchase clothes, washcloth, bath towel and bedding which are our main products. When American people face the most serious economic crisis in these decades, they have to return to traditional consumption form. Many statistics show that the consumers fine every possible way to decrease consumption to save daily living expenses. People just buy what they really want rather than buy what they like. Manypopular famous brands are replaced by cheap and useful products. Our products are all the articles for daily use and in good quality with low price which they really need. Therefore, in this cultural situation, our products have a competitive edge, and we believe we can open the potential market in America.Political SituationThe elimination of the last set of quotas of the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC) on January 1, 2005, ostensibly brought about the end of decades of quantitative restrictions on the international exchange of clothing and textiles. For the American domestic market, the end of the ATC quotas was expected to bring about two major changes. First, there would be a sharp increase in American clothing and textile imports. Second, there would be a major shift in sourcing clothing and textile imports to China. With the end of ATC, Chinese clothing and textiles exports to America grew rapidly. From 2002 to 2004, China’s clothing and textiles exports to the America grew on average by 22 percent annually. However, in 2005, after the ATC expired, Chinese clothing and textiles exports to the American market grew by 50 percent. Therefore, it is the time to export our products to America. For trade policy, the tow parties, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party have different ways to deal with. The Democratic Party praise highly to free trade policy, while the Republican Party prefer to trade protection policy. The trade policy is essential to trade. As we all know, today, the party in power in America is the Democratic Party. So now, the trade policy is more like free trade policy. It will benefit our trade.Besides, there are many trade associations in America, and they play an important role in American market. In order to protect the industries benefits, they would lobby the government to make the relevant laws and regulations. At the same time, they would organize some seminars to help the industry develop, some exhibitions to expand the market and some magazines to provide latest news. It is not difficult to join this kind of associations. We should make efforts join the associations, then our benefits can be protected and our reputation can be improved.America is a country under the rule of law. It has a stable political environment which benefits its market. And the American market is a developed and mature market with mature market economy and strong securities laws and institutions which can protect both sellers and buyers well. Therefore, we can say that American stable domestic political situation and well-organized business environment in favor of our exporting.Risk FactorsAlthough there is a great opportunity because of the end by ATC, there also some problems are arisen.First, with the end of ATC, the textile industry in America claimed that 19 textile plants had closed and 26,000 jobs had been lost in 2005. Faced with an increase in theimport of clothing and textile products, some American manufacturers may no longer be as competitive as before and cut back or cease operations and dismiss some or all of their workers. On November 6, 2005, China and America signed the “Memorandum of Understanding Between the Governments of the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China Concerning Trade in Textile and Apparel Products,” or the “U.S.-China MOU.” The U.S.-China MOU covers most, but not all, categories of clothing and textiles for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008. For clothing, the rate of increase of imports was set at 10% in 2006, 12.5% in 2007, and 15% in 2008. For textiles, the annual allowable rate of increase was set at 12.5% in 2006 and 2007, and 15% in 2008. The enforcement of the safeguards was to be done cooperatively, using an electronic visa information system (ELVIS). Following the announcement of the signing of the U.S.-China MOU, CITA terminated its consideration of the pending petitions. Administrative oversight of the U.S.-China MOU is handled by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in America, and the Ministry of Commerce in China. Under China’s provisional “Measures for Administration on Textile Export,” export visas are allocated among Chinese exporters via an electronic bidding process. As a result, Chinese exporters must pay for the opportunity to export restricted clothing and textiles to America. So we can see that in order to protect their own textile industry and reduce unemployment rate, American government may take more measures to restrict import.Second, because of the end of ATC, many other countries would want to export their textiles to America. Many companies in developing countries, like India, Vietnam and Philippines and so on all want to share the large market. They may make great effort to export their products to America and try to occupy a certain market share. Their products are also cheap, so they may have some competitive advantages. Our company will feel stressed from these companies when we export our products to America. An Outline Marketing Strategy1.Send free samples. Because American people believe in brand and the goodproducts they use before, so we should give them a perfect first impression. We can send free samples to our target consumers and get feedback from them to improve our products, and then we can send free our improved samples to them. If like our products, they will buy and advertise for us.e creative design. American people like new and creative things, so we shouldmake our design creative and different from others. Besides, we should also make our advertisement creative to attract them.3.Make our products’price and quality competitive. Now, many other countrieswant to share American market, in order to compete with them, the most important thing is to make sure our products’quality, and then make our price competitive.4.Join a trade association and cooperate with a supermarket. Joining a tradeassociation can help us know more about American market. At the same time, cooperating with a supermarket can help us sell our products.ConclusionThrough analyzing economic situation, cultural assessment and political situation in America, we can know that American market is a potential market for us. We should hold this chance to occupy a certain market share in America. However, there are some risk factors. We should pay attention to them and try to avoid them. We should still study about American business environment and pay attention to its changing trends, and then make a specific plan for marketing. We believe we can achieve success.Reference1.
