模块整合训练I •阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AParents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air of second-hand smoke, but experts now have found another smoking・ related threat(威肋') to children's health: third-hand smoke. That's the expression which is used to describe the invisible(看不见的)yet poisonous(有毒的)gases that stick to smokers1 hair and clothing and other things in the room. These gases stay long after smoke has been cleared from the room. Young children can get them on their hands, especially if they're playing on the floo匚a Everyone knows that second- hand smoke is bad, but they don't know about this, "said Dr. Jonathan P・Winickoff, the lead author of the study at Harvard Medical School.“ When their kids are out of the house, they might smoke. Or they smoke in the car. They think it's okay because the second-hand smoke isn't getting to their kids, ” Dr. Winickoff continued. "We needed an expression to describe these poisons that can't be seen. ”Third- hand smoke is what one smells when a smoker gets in an elevator after going outside for a cigarette, or in a hotel room where people smoked.u Your nose isn't lying, ” he said. “The smell is so bad that your brain is telling you, 'Get away.' ”But far fewer people realized the risks of third- hand smoke. Since the expression is so new, the researchers asked people if they agreed with the statement that ^breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of children"・Only 65 per cent of non- smokers and 43 per cent of smokers agreed with that statement.“The central message here is that simply closing the kitchen door to take a smoke is not protecting the kids from the effects of that smoke, ” said another doctor. There are substances in the third- hand smoke, and they are a cancer risk for anybody of any age who comes close to them. ”The fact that third- hand smoke is harmful will most probably lead to a strict smoking ban at home.【语篇解读】本文通过一项研究说明了人们陌生而又熟悉的三手烟对儿童的影响。

Pride and Prejudice(excerpt)It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.“My dear Mr.Bennet,”said his lady to him one day,“have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”Mr.Bennet replied that he had not.“But it is,”returned she,“for Mrs.Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”Mr.Bennet made no answer.“Do not you want to know who has taken it?”cried his wife impatiently.“You want to tell me,and I have no objection to hearing it.”This was invitation enough.“Why,my dear, you must know,Mrs.Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England;that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted with it that he agreed with Mr.Morris immediately;that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(Excerpt)
“What's gone with that boy, I wonder? You TOM!” No answer.
The old lady pulled her spectacles down and looked over them about the room; then she put them up and looked out under them. She seldom or never looked through them or so small a thing as a boy; they were her state pair, the pride of her heart, and were buil t for “style”,not service—she could have seen through a pair of stovelids just as well. She looked perplexed for a moment, and then said, not fiercely, but still loud enough for the furniture to hear.“Well, I lay if I get hold of you I'll—”She did not finish, for by this time she was bending down and punching under the bed with the broom, and so she needed breath to punctuate the punches with. She resurrected nothing but the cat.
“I never did see the beat of that boy!” She went to the open door and stood in it and looked out among the tomato vines and “jimpson” weeds that constituted the garden. No Tom. So she lifted up her voice at an angle calculated for distance and shouted: “Y-o-u-u Tom!” There was a slight noise behind her and she turned just in time to seize a small boy by the slack of his roundabout and arrest his flight.
“There! I might‘a’ thought of that closet. What you been doing in there?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing! Look at your hands. And look at your mouth. What is that truck?”
“I don't know, aunt. ”
“Well, I know. It's jam—that's what it is. Forty times I've said if you didn't let that
jam alone I'd skin you. Hand me that switch.”
The switch hovered in the air—the peril was desperate—“My! Look behind you, aunt!”
