AWhy go to Madrid? There may be a slight chill (寒冷) in the air, with temperatures staying around 15℃ in March, but Spain's handsome capital is slowly starting to warm up. Even more attractive are the cultural events.A new exhibition on the living and working spaces of Spain’s greatest artist, Picasso, has just opened in th e studio at the Fundación Mapfre at Paseo de Recoletos 23. It runs until 11 May with rarely seen pieces borrowed from his family.Later this summer, the 400th anniversary of the death of the Renaissance (文艺复兴) painter EI Greco will be marked with an exciting exhibition at the Museo del Prado at Paseo del Prado from 24 June to 5 October. How to go?The widest range of flights is offered by EasyJet - from Bristo, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Liverpool and Luton. British Airways and its sister airline Iberia combine forces from Heathrow and London City. Ryanair flies from Manchester and Stansted; Air Europa flies from Gatwick.Barajas airport is 13km north-east of the city centre and is served by frequent trains on Metro line 8, but the shortest underground journey is a bit complex with at least one change at Nuevos Miniterios station and takes about 30 minutes. The fare to any station in the city centre is €4.50. The airport express bus runs every 15 to 35 minutes around the clock; €5 one way. It takes 40 minutes to reach the city centre. A taxi takes half the time. A flat rate of €30 covers most of central Madrid. 1. When will the exhibition about Picasso close?A. On 23 March.B. On 11 May.C. On 24 June.D. On 5 October.2. Which airline operates flights from Manchester to Madrid?A. EasyJet.B. Ryanair.C. Air Europa.D. British Airways.3. What is the fastest way to reach central Madrid from Barajas airport?A. Take a taxi.B. Take a city bus.C. Take Metro line 8.D. Take the airport express bus.BAt the heart of the debate over illegal immigration lies one key question: are immigrants good or bad for the economy? The American public overwhelmingly(压倒性地)thinks they’re bad. Yet the agreement among most economists is that immigration, both legal and illegal, provides a small net boost to the economy. Immigrants provide cheap labor, lower the prices of everything from farm produce to new homes, and leave consumers with a little more money in their pockets. So why is there such a difference between the idea of immigrants’ impact on the economy and the reality? There are a number of familiar theories. Some argue that people are anxious and feel threatened by an inflow of new workers. Others highlight the stress that undocumented immigrants place on public services, like schools, hospitals, and jails. Still others emphasize the role of race, arguing that foreigners add to the nation’s fears and insecurities. There’s some truth to all these explanations, but they aren’t quite adequate. To get a better understanding of what’s going on, consider the way immigration’s impact is felt. Though its overall effect may be positive, its costs and benefits are distributed irregularyly.David Card, an economist at UC Berkeley, not es that the ones who profit most directly from immigrants’ low-cost labor are businesses and employers --- meatpacking plants in Nebraska, for example, these producers’ savings probably translate into lower prices at the grocery store, but how many consumers make that mental connection at the checkout counter? As for the drawbacks of illegal immigration, these, too, are concentrated. Native low-skilled workers suffer most from the competition of foreign labor. According to a study by George Borjas, a Harvard economist, immigration has reduced the wages of American high-school dropouts by 9%.Among high-skilled, better-educated employees, however, opposition was strongest in states with both highnumbers of immigrants and relatively generous social services. What worried them most, in other words, was the financial burden of immigration. That conclusion was proved by another finding: that their opposition appeared to soften when that financial burden decreased, as occurred with welfare reform in the 1990s, which limited immigrants’ access to certain benefits. The irony(讽刺) is that for all the overexcited debate, the net effect of immigration is minimal. Even for those most acutely affected say, low-skilled workers, or California residents the impact isn’t all that dramatic. “The unpleasant voices have tended to affect our perceptions”, says Daniel Tichenor, a professor at the University of Oregon. “But when all those factors are put together and the economists calculate the numbers, it ends up being a net posit ive, but a small one”. Too bad most people don’t realize it.4. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. Whether immigrants are good or bad for the economy has been puzzling economists.B. The American economy used to thrive on immigration but now it’s a different story.C. The general public thinks differently from most economists on the impact of immigration.D. The agreement among economists is that immigration should not be encouraged.5.What is the chief concern of native high-skilled, better-educated employees about the inflow of immigrants?A. It may change the existing social structure.B. It may pose a threat to their economic status.C. It may decrease their welfare.D. It may place a great pressure on the financial burden.6. What is the irony about the debate over immigration?A. Even economists can’t reach an agreement about its impact.B. Those who are opposed to it turn out to benefit most from it.C. People are making too big a argument about something of small impact.D. There is no essential difference between seemingly opposite opinions.7. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. A debate about whether to immigrate.B. A debate about the impact of illegal immigrants.C. The great impact of immigrants on the economy.D. Opposition to illegal immigration.COrganic food is very popular. It is also expensive. Some organic food costs twice as much as non-organic food, but new parents and pet owners are willing to pay up to 200% more for organic food. However, there are people who think it is a waste of money. There is one main difference between organic and non-organic food. Organic farms do not use agricultural chemicals, such as pesticides (杀虫剂). In many countries organic foods have special labels. These guarantee that the products are natural. Some people think organic means locally grown. Originally this was true. Over time organic farming became more difficult. The demand for organic food grew larger than the supply. Small companies had to sell out to large companies. There weren't enough organic ingredients (原料), such as grain and cattle. This made it difficult for many organic companies to stay in business. Today, many large companies have an organic line of products. Is organic food more nutritious? This is part of the debate. Many farmers and consumers believe it is. They think agricultural chemicals cause health problems such as cancer. Many health professionals disagree. Few studies prove that organic foods prevent health problems. Health specialists worry more about bacteria (病毒), such as E.coli and salmonella. These can get into contact with organic and non- organic food. Doctors recommend washing produce very carefully. Handling meat carefully is important too. Most people agree that naturally grown food tastes better. Is tastier food worth the extra money? This is a matter of opinion. Whether it is healthier or not may require more research. However, organic consumers argue it is better to be safe than sorry.8. What is probably the major concern of organic food consumers?A. Price.B. Safety.C. Freshness.D. Variety.9. What is the doctors’ suggestion?A. Grow your own food.B. Reduce the use of pesticides.C. Make sure the food is clean.D. Buy large companies’ products.10. Which of the following do most people agree on organic food?A. It tastes better.B. It is easier to grow.C. It contains more fat.D. It is more nutritious.11. Where does this text probably come from?A. A recipe book.B. A chemistry paper.C. A medical report.D. A health magazine.DAs we grow old, we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so many great books that we've yet to get around to. Yet re-readers are everywhere around us. For certain fans, re-reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice annually. One friend told me that Jane Austen's Emma can still surprise him, despite his having read it over 50 times.New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re-reading. Journalist Rebecca Mead, a long-time English woman in New York, first came across George Eliot's Middlemarch at 17. Since then, she has read it again every five years. With each re-reading, it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life, it has resonated(引起共鸣)differently. Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads, but also offer fresh gifts each time we crack their spines. These kinds of books grow with us.Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re-reading. Research conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading, we are concerned with the "what" and the “why”. Seco nd time round, we're able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express. As researcher Cristel Russell of the American University explained. returning to a book “brings new or renewed appreciation of both the great book and its readers."It's true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books(if we're fond of making notes on the pages). These texts can carry us back to a time and place, and remind us of the kind of person that we were then. We're changed not only by lived experience but also by read experience—by the books that we've discovered since last reading the one in our hand.More so than the movie director or the musician, the writer calls upon our imaginations, using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that unfaithfulness in life. A book is a join project between writers and readers, and we must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become connected with the story in the book.Perhaps what's really strange is that we don't re-read more often. After all, we watch our favourite films again and we wouldn't think of listening to an album only once. We treasure messy old paintings as objects, yet of all art forms, literature alone is a largely one-time delight. A book, of course, takes up more time, but as Mead confirms, the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.12. The two books are mentioned in Paragraph 1 mainly to__________.A. attract the attention of readersB. introduce the topic of the passageC. provide some background informationD. show the similarity between re-readers13. The underlined expression "crack their spines" in Paragraph 2 refers to ____________.A. recite themB. re-read themC. recall themD. retell them14. It can be learned from paragraphs 3 and 4 that______________.A. reading benefits people both mentally and physicallyB. readers mainly focus on feelings on their first readingC. we know ourselves better through re-reading experienceD. we will change writers by reading the books15. The writing purpose of the passage is to______________.A. call on different understandings of re-reading old booksB. argue against the mental health benefits of re-readingC. bring awareness to the significance of re-readingD. introduce the effective ways of re-reading old books第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

In many cultures, dance has both historic and cultural significance, which is communicated through learned gestures and expressions. Here are a bit more details about three of the world’s most beautiful dances.KathakaliKathakali is a storytelling dance, during which performers use a variety of gestures, and eyes and facial expressions to communicate meanings. Costumes, hair styles, makeup and face paint, and jewelry also all hold specific meanings in the performance of kathakali. There are nine facial expressions used to express emotions ranging from sadness and anger to curiosity. Through their expressions, it should be completely clear to the viewer what the performer is intending to convey.TangoThe dance has its roots in an African slave dance called candombe, which is also a type of music. One key factor of a candombe performance is a partnered dance, which has over time developed into the modern tango. If you can keep your eyes on one part of the tango, just focus on the dancers’ legs and feet. The tango is typically performed low to the ground, with both performers’ step-work often taking place at the same time. It’s complex and communicative.FlamencoOne of the most interesting facts about the flamenco is that it began as a song. Over time, flamenco developed to include its now-famous passionate accompanying dance. One of the key factors of flamenco is palmas. It may look like simple, rhythmic clapping, but palmas are performed at different speeds, and strengths, and it is essential that the flamenco dancer understands how to make use of his or her hands as part of the performance.1. What is special about kathakali?A. It is intended to convey a romantic story.B. It involves many expressions to attract viewers.C. It’s a dance to tell a story and express m any feelings.D. It is a dance where people can learn how to exchange feelings.2. What should you pay attention to in a tango?A. The dancers’ arms and hands.B. The dancers’ legs and feet.C. The dancers’ facial expressions.D. The dancers’ eyes and hands.3. In which dance does dancers’ clapping play an important role?A. Kathakali.B. Flamenco.C. Tango.D. CandombeBIn Old T own Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp(竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different sized drinking glasses, eachfilled with water.Turner makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the glasses. By doing so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors to Alexandria like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a dollar or more in his box for donations. Jamey Turner is 78 years old. Turner became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six, when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.Turner always uses low-priced glass because it sounds better than costly crystal(水晶) and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing his finger over the top of them. The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. There have been about 400 pieces of music written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on YouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making its music.4. There is hardly any reason for journalists to express their personal opinion on issues or facts. Forming a judgment or an opinion or idea based on a journalistic report is the readers’ pri vilege. Journalists also need to dig deep so as to look into the roots, inviting the readers to have a look at it. At this time, a report will become meaningful.Journalists must not give much importance to news thatdoesn’t have much significance in the l ives of the readers and the audience. This sort of practice primarily comes from the desire to attract attention of the latter, which overshadows the primary responsibility of presenting important facts that concern the readers and the audience in one way or the other. It’s only the readers and the viewers who are the judges; journalists should let them pass their judgment on various issues. Sometimes journalists try hard to influence public opinion in favor of a particular side of an issue; this is a wrong practice, especially if the side the media takes is the wrong one, and the public opinion will be in favor of that particular side in conse- quence of such role on the part of the media.A proper understanding of which type of news is more important and the ability for grading news are the main character of true journalism. The social significance of a news item that does not profit us in the least (although, it might make us amused or sad in an indifferent way) is far less than that of a news item that makes us feel worried about our personal safety. Most of us are afraid of the truth, because we consider it as too terrifying to know—something that is better hidden than revealed. However, the fundamental responsibility of a journalist is to reveal the fact s in all their aspects exposing the “hard and harsh” reality.8. We can learn from the first paragraph that a meaningful report should ____________.A. bring about society changesB. contain the stories hidden behindC. lead to a good judgment or an ideaD. contain the scientific research9. What is the primary responsibility of a journalist?A. Presenting significant facts as it is.B. Attracting the public’s attention.C. Influencing the readers’ life.D. Choosing proper news to report.10. Which of the following is an incorrect practice for journalists?A. Basing their reports unclearly.B. Convincing the public of the facts.C. Reporting news on a particular side.D. Inviting readers to judge the facts.11. What does the underlined phrase “hard and harsh” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. Fanciful.B. Serious.C. Fantastic.D. Objective.DIt has been four years since the Flashfood App was set to hit Canadian grocery stores and make it easier for shoppers to buy soon-to-expiry (保质期) food at a discount. Much to my delight, I heard it advertised recently on a radio station and figured it’s time for an update, especially since people became more aware of food waste’s role in the climate crisis. The first thing I did was download the App. I hadn’t done it before be cause it was limited to a few locations, but now it’s all over Canada. I could see immediately that many brands of yogurt are all marked down 50 percent. Users pay for the food using the App, and then pick it up at a marked location in the store. There is no need for you to worry about them actually being bad.It makes sense for retailers to get behind this App because itoffers a win-win situation for everyone involved. Flashfood sells 75% of the products made available through its App while saving consumers an average of 50% on those grocery items, and it has 300,000 active users right now. That number is expected to grow naturally as Flashfood partners with more grocers.“As a f ood retailer, we are in the business of providing food, not wasting it. The Flashfood program allows us to provide our customers with a convenient and environmentally sustainable (可持续的) way to purchase food. Loblaw sells 77% of the items it puts on Flashfood, moving an average of $800 to $1,000 worth of goods weekly at each of its largest stores,” said Gord Chem, senior VP with Loblaw’s Real Canadian Superstores.I love looking for discount deals at the grocery store and always keep an eye out for the hot pink clearance stickers. But it’s always random, and I never know what I’m goi ng to get from week to week. The appeal of Flashfood is that I can see what’s available, pre-purchase it, and leave it off my shopping list.12. What can we know about the food on the Flashfood?A. It’s delivered directly to the customers.B. Much of it is charged at half the price.C. Users can pay for it in the marked store.D. It’ll be a month away before it goes bad.13. According to Gord Chem, the Flashfood is ______________.A. beneficialB. popularC. creativeD. reliable14. How is the advantage of Flashfood introduced in the last paragraph?A. By listing some examples.B. By making a comparison.C. By explaining the cause.D. By introducing the result.15. What is the main idea of the text?A. Customers can buy much cheaper food on a recent app.B. A win-win situation has been set for Canadians involved.C. Canadians have a smart approach to reducing food waste.D. Canadians adopt a new way of protecting the environment.第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5 分, 满分12.5 分)Do you always concern yourself with your kid’s p lay dates?

For that reason, some parents and some students feel that the compulsory study of English literature is misguided and disadvantageous to students, particularly if they are second language learners of English. However, there are still good reasons for the study of English literature.Students of English language sometimes fail to see the point of studying English literature, especially if they have no plans to study English or translation at university. But English literature can introduce students to a range of aspects, not only of the English language but also the culture of English-speaking countries. There are aspects of English culture that are summarised by English literature. Of course, this is quite obvious when studying the works of Shakespeare or of writers, poets and playwrights of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is, however, also true when studying other works of English literature. Students can learn about good stories and references to different aspects of English culture. They can also learn the context and meanings of famous quotes and phrases.Studying literature does not confine the students to the traditions ofEnglandbut includes the possibility of introducing them to traditions which inform English literature, such as the study of Ancient Greek drama, and to literature in other contexts, such as American literature. An enjoyment and appreciation of literature will give students the ability to develop this into an interest in books and reading as they move away from their studies and into the adult lives. They will have the confidence to approach and cope with new forms of books and writing, since they were exposed to a range of literature during their school days. When studying literature, students can learn not only language aspects such as vocabulary items but also the language aspects which can be used for specific purposes. For example, if the students are familiar with the concepts of beat and rhythm of English poems, they can improve their own writing as they are able to appreciate and apply these ideas. Finally, the study of literature can provide students with a fresh and creative angle, from which the students can approach their studies in particular and their lives in general. So the next time you are reading a newspaper article complaining of the lack of creativity and initiative in thelocal workforce, remember that in a small way the study of English literature can help to add a refreshing and further dimension to a person’s life.8. The author may agree that the study of English literature________.A. has a long-lasting influence on studentsB. is misguided and has more disadvantagesC. is not necessary for second language learnersD. only allows the students to learn the traditions ofEngland9. We can learn from the passage that ________.A.schools fail to care about students’ needsB. learning English literature makes students smarterC. English culture is closely related to English literatureD. the more you read literary works, the more you complain10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the study of English literature?A. Critical.B. Cautious.C. Supportive.D. Anxious.11. What’s the best title of the passage?A. Parents and Students’ DemandsB. Why We Learn English LiteratureC. English Culture and English LiteratureD. Suitable Courses for Secondary SchoolsDIn May this year, as part of our 150th anniversary, we asked readers aged between18 and 25 to enter an essay competition. The task was to tell us, in no more than 1,000 words, what scientific advance they would most like to see in their lifetimes, and why it mattered to them. The response was phenomenal: we received 661 entries. Some entrants hoped that science would make their lifetimes much longer than they can currently expect. Many looked forward to work that will end climate change. Others wanted to see advances in our understanding of human history, crop growth, space exploration, and medical technologies. The ideas were inspiring. The winner is a compelling essay by Yasmin Ali, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, UK. Ali submitted a piece on Beethoven, her brother’s hearing loss and the science which she hoped would one day cure it. It stood out to the judges as a reminder of why many scientists do research: to make the world better tomorrowthan it is today. All essays were judged by a group of Nature editors. The top ten submissions were then ranked by three members of a separate judging group: Magdalena Skipper, editor-in-chief of Nature; Faith Osier, a researcher; and Jess Wade, a physicist. All submissions were kept anonymous throughout the process. We also selected two runners-up(非冠军的获奖者).Physicist Robert Schittkoat Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, proposes that nuclear fusion(核聚变) could offer a solution to the climate crisis, in a piece that effortlessly mixes grand ambition with gentle humour. And chemist Matthew Zajac at the University of Chicagoin Illinois wrote a powerful personal account of why he wants to see advances in the field of same-sex reproduction. The results show that today’s young scientists have a wealth of ideas, talent and conviction that research can transform their world. We look forward to seeing what they do next.12. What’s the essay competition about?A. The scientific expectation.B. The fantastic scientific ideas.C. The dreams of future life.D. The celebration of anniversary.13. Why Yasmin Ali was chosen the winner?A. She showed great talent in music.B. She found the cure for the loss of hearing.C. She appealed for people to care about hearing loss problem.D. She reminded people to remember the meaning of science development.14. What can we learn about the result of the essay competition?A. Robert Schittko won the second place.B. There were two winners in the essay competition.C. Matthew Zajac presented his view of same-sex reproduction.D. The two runners-up were selected for the same field they chose.15. What isthe author’s attitude to the competitors’ ideas about science expectations?A. Doubtful.B. Favorable.C. Impossible.D.

AWhy go to Madrid? There may be a slight chill (寒冷) in the air, with temperatures staying around 15℃in March, but Spain's handsome capital is slowly starting to warm up. Even more attractive are the cultural events.A new exhibition on the living and working spaces of Spain’s greatest artist, Picasso, has just opened in the studio at the Fundación Mapfre at Paseo de Recoletos 23. So why is there such a difference betwee n the idea of immigrants’ impact on the economy and the reality? There are a number of familiar theories. Some argue that people are anxious and feel threatened by an inflow of new workers. Others highlight the stress that undocumented immigrants place on public services, like schools, hospitals, and jails. Still others emphasize the role of race, arguing that foreigners add to the nation’s fears and insecurities. There’s some truth to all these explanations, but they aren’t quite adequate. To get a better understanding of what’s going on, consider the way immigration’s impact is felt. Though its overall effect may be positive, its costs and benefits are distributed irregularyly.David Card, an economist at UC Berkeley, notes that the ones who profit most d irectly from immigrants’ low-cost labor are businesses and employers --- meatpacking plants in Nebraska, for example, these producers’ savings probably translate into lower prices at the grocery store, but how many consumers make that mental connection at the checkout counter? As for the drawbacks of illegal immigration, these, too, are concentrated. Native low-skilled workers suffer most from the competition of foreign labor. According to a study by George Borjas, a Harvard economist, immigration has reduced the wages of American high-school dropouts by 9%.Among high-skilled, better-educated employees, however, opposition was strongest in states with both highnumbers of immigrants and relatively generous social services. What worried them most, in other words, was the financial burden of immigration. That conclusion was proved by another finding: that their opposition appeared to soften when that financial burden decreased, as occurred with welfare reform in the 1990s, which limited immigrants’ access to c ertain benefits. “But when all those factors are put together and the economists calculate the numbers, it ends up being a net positive, but a small one”. Second time round, we're able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express.
