高等教育自学考试《英语(一)》真题卷一材料题根据下面资料(江南博哥),回答1-10题A Frightful ExperienceMr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route--through the boot (后备箱).Mr. Johnson's car had finished up in a ditch (沟渠) at Romney, Kent, after skidding on ice and hitting a bank. "Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly," Mr. Johnson said. "I couldn't force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in. "Mr. Johnson,a sweet salesman of Sitting Home,Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape.Later he said, " It was really a half penny that saved my life. It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came. " It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat, and a further five minutes to clear the samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a wrench and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutes passed by. "It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. I forced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the car filled up. "His hands and arms cut and bruised (擦伤), Mr. Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmer' s wife, Mrs. Lucy Bates. Huddled in a blanket, he said, "That thirty minutes seemed like hours. " Only the tips of the car wheels were visible, police said last night. The Kid That Saved His Dad On a sunny day list April,Bode, then nine, and his father, John Taylor,54,were snowmobiling around the remote country of Lake Tahoe. As they were driving on the snow,a little dry branch jammed in the brake of John's vehicle. Unable to slow down,John rushed toward a pine tree. He moved to jump off the vehicle before it crashed, but his pantleg (裤腿) caught underneath it.John felt his leg broken. As he sank six inches into the powdery snow, he could tell his arms and shoulder were injured too.Bode rushed to dig out his father, but John stopped him. They had no water, little food, and no cell phone service.“Get on your snowmobile,” John told Bode. "Follow the road, and try to find help.” After a 20-minute ride, Bode spotted a tour group and asked the guide to radio for help. The rescuers quickly appeared on the scene. And Bode led them through the white wilderness to his dad, who was pale and in pain. While they were waiting for a plane to send John to the nearest hospital, the rescuers quickly stabilized his leg. An hour later, he received surgery for the broken leg and internal bleeding.Today, John's leg has healed enough for him to take Bode out on dirt bikes. Father and son now carry extra devices on their trips, including a two-way radio with an emergency button. “I'm still a little afraid to go out on a snowmobile," says Bode. “But I'm starting to feel better about it."厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 厦门撷墨教育 Tisha Shaw, Bode's mother, says her son's courage and quick thinking have led her to treat him as more of an adult. Lacking in Self-Esteem(自尊)?Good for you!According to psychological and educational theories, self-esteem is essential for a successful life. Generations of children, especially minority kids, have been educated according to the theory (that they lack self-esteem), and that this deficiency is central to any problems (they may have in making their way in the world).Well, guess what? A new research has found that self-esteem can be just as high among grade D students and drunk drivers as it is among Nobel Prize winners and former presidents. In fact, people with high self-esteem can engage in,far more anti-social behavior than those with low self-esteem.“We used to believe that high self-esteem would cause all sorts of positive consequences and that if we raised self-esteem,people would do better in life,”a researcher said.“Mostly, the data have failed to support that.'Racists, street thugs and school bullies all have high scores on the self-esteem tests. And you can see why.If you think you're highly gifted, you're particularly offended if other people don't treat you that way.So you hit out or commit crimes to defend your pride. After all,who are they to suggest that you could be doing something wrong? What do they know?Self-esteem can also be an educational concern.College teachers are constantly complaining about the high self-esteem of their students. When every grade in the school is assessed so as to,make the kid feel good rather than to give an accurate measure of his work, the kid can develop self-esteem dangerously unrelated to the truth. When he's told he is getting a C grade in college,he can then get deeply offended or extremely angry.Weak professors give in to the pressure-hence,grade inflation, which results in their students'vague touch with reality.1. It is believed that minority kids often have self-esteem problem.A. TrueB. FalseC. Not Given2.A new research shows that high self-esteem is essential to success.。

Australian Aborigines(土著居民)Some aborigines live in the desert of Western Australia. They gather wild plants and hunt wild animals. Their desert envirorunent averages less than eight inches of rain per year. Andthe temperature in summer may rise to 48°C. The few permanent(永久的)water holes are separated by hundreds of square miles of sand and rock.On a typical day, the aborigines get up just before sunrise. The people breakfast on water and food left over from the night before. Children are sent to fetch water. In the cool of the early morning, the adults talk and make plans for the day. Where should they go for food—to places they have been to recently, or to new places? The women decide which plants they want to collect, and where those plants are most likely to be found. Then they take up their sticks and set out with large wooden bowls of drinking water on their heads. Their children ride on their hips(膀)or walk alongside. Meanwhile, the men may have decided to hunt animals. They go to a stream where they will wait to get any animal that may come along. They lie patiently behind a screen of bush they have set up, hoping for a chance to throw a spear(矛)at the animal. If they miss, the animal will run away. So they can only throw once.B y noon, the men and women are back at camp. Explain the three principles of concord with examples. There are three complementary principles of concord are the grammatical principle, the notional principle and the principle of proximity. For example:Everybody is happy with the decision. The audience were brought to their feet at the sight of Superman in his wheelchair.Either you or I am responsible for the mistake. In the first sentence IS is used to agree with singular subject Everybody.so grammatical principle is followed. In the second sentence WERE is used because the subject AUDIENCE is plural in meaning,so notional principle is followed. In the last sentence AM is used because the subject close to it is I,so the last principle is followed.。

Being ”Cool” in Middle SchoolA new study shows that gentle and quiet kids in middle school will grow up to rule. Or, they’ll live healthier and more productive lives than the “cool” kids will. The study looked at 13-year-olds who acted old for their age by having “cool”behavior, such as early romantic relationships. They were seen as “cool” and popular kids. But as they grew up, things changed. The study found that these kids tended to have problems with drugs and relationships by their 20s. Their behavior was no longer linked with popularity. Instead, they were thought to be less socially skilled by their peers. Besides, the average “cool”kids, by age 22, did more poorly than the average kids in the study. They had a 45 percent greater rate of problems due to drugs and alcohol. They also had a 22 percent greater rate of criminal behavior. The study also found that these kids failed to develop important life skills. They spent so much time trying to seem cool. They didn’tdevelop the skills needed for meaningful friendships. The study followed 86 male and 98 female middle school students for a 10-year period. It has some surprising findings. In particular, the study notes that the so-called “cool”behavior is a predictor (预示)of future problems with drugs and alcohol. In fact, it is a better predictor than drug and alcohol use in middle school. However, one conclusion of the study is welcome. Researchers said that parents shouldn’t worry too much if their kids don’t seem that popular. If a kid prefers to spend Saturday nights at home watching a movie or reading instead of going out with friends, that is not a cause for concern. Many “uncool” kids, they said, do much better later on than the popular kids do.1、Gentle kids are less healthy when they grow up.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given2、”Cool” kids try to imitate adult behavior.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given3、Romantic relationships seem cool to come teenagers.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given4、”Uncool” kids are more likely to commit crimes.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given5、”Cool” kids have better life skills than “uncool” kids.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given6、”Uncool” kids spend most of their time studying.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given7、The study followed the students for a decade.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given8、”Cool” kids marry earlier than “uncool” kids.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given9、Parents needn’t worry if their kids are “uncool”.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given10、”Cool” kids remain popular all their lives.A、TrueB、FalseC、Not Given第二部分:阅读选择(第11~15题,每题2分,共10分)阅读下面短文,请从短文后所给各题的4个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出1个最佳选项,并在答题卡相应位置上将该项涂黑。
It is estimated that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants as we know have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. There was nowhere in which a server brought you food and drink that you chose from a menu. In fact, there were no menus anywhere. There were places where travelers could eat centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. Andthere were bars where one could get a drink. The rich could also eat meals supplied by private cooks. But there was nothing that could be called a “treasure”.A Frenchman changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups. In his sign, he used the term “restaurants”to describe what he was selling. Soups were considered “restorative”, so he called them “restaurants”. Finally, people started buying his soups even when not ill. And as time went on, people began to use the term “restaurant”to refer to the place where soup was sold rather than the soup itself. More “restaurants” opened up in France, and people began to buy soups more regularly. Then, restaurants in Paris began to serve food other than soups. In the 1780s, menus started to appear. By the 1800s, there were many types of restaurants, and the restaurant concept was spread throughout the British Empire.A slow start gave way to rapid growth. Cities and towns around the world are filled with restaurant today. It is estimated that there are 1.6 million restaurants in Europe. In American, there are nearlya half million restaurant.
